    Transitioning Band to the Sleeve

Hi Chasity, I'm probably not far along in my Journey enough to tell you much! I just had my band removed, revision to sleeve on June 26. I am on my puréed foods this week, and can begin " real food " Monday. All I can tell you so far, when I woke up from surgery, I hurt so much more than I expected!! I had acid reflux really bad, causing me to stay a 3rd night in hospital (well, couldn't get fluids in due to acid reflux!) The reflux has settled a great deal. My incision is still quite tender, but looks wonderful. I do have swelling on my left side still, I'm thinking it's due to my port removal. I wish I could tell you more! Read all you can! I was vomiting years after my band. I have not once since this surgery[emoji41]
  2. Hello all, New to the forum here. I had a gastric sleeve done back in 2012, the first 2 years were great and I was happy with my weight loss. After that, for the past few years I've been putting weight back on, so far nearly 50 lbs. I am seriously considering going to Mexico for the sleeve to bypass revision. Has anyone else had this surgery? What was your experience? Were there any hidden fees for revision surgery? Thanks all!

    6 months in the hospital

Yep. I'm waiting for her to return to answer this burning question. Did he have a band, sleeve, plication, bypass, or duodenal switch? Was it a virgin procedure or a revision? There are too many unanswered questions.
  4. I'm just shy of being two years out. I do not have diarrhea or any other complications, but occasionally do experience nausea when I eat too fast, foods that are too heavy, or too many carbs. I did manage to get down to 145 pounds, but felt unhealthy. My sweet spot is 152 (150 was pushing it). I'm hoovering 156-58 right now and need to lose and stabilize again as I can see bad habits creeping back in. As for regain, that will depend on your habits; what you're eating, how much, and exercise. My husband was sleeved a month before me and was doing great the first 6 months. He was physically active riding his bike and watching what he ate. Then he accepted a new job and we moved out of state. He became less active and his new employer provided a buffet style lunch daily. This did him in. He had put back on 60+ pounds of the 100 pounds lost in 1.5 years. For a long time he blamed it primarily on what I cooked for dinner (the meal we eat together), as I haven;t changed all of our eating habits. But has instead come to realize that he eats too much socially at lunch because he has everything available to him. He doesn't bring his lunch like I do. Plus portion sizes are too big, as opposed to my dessert plate with tiny portions. He's also less physically active due to a longer commute among other reasons. Now he has always been able to consume everything and anything since starting on solids. We joked then that he had the sleeve of steel, where nothing bothered him. His doctor did comment at one point that his sleeve is larger than some of the others, meaning he removed less stomach; but I'm not sure if that's true. He is currently looking at a revision to his sleeve as his is considered to have been a failure.
  5. In 2012 I paid for my lap band out of pocket 13,000 and it was outpatient and 2 weeks ago I paid for a revision to a sleeve out of my pocket as well. My insurance doesn't cover WLS or any complications of it. While it's frustrating to have to pay, I know the money I will save on weight related medical issues will make up for it in the long run. My total for the revision was around 15,000 in the Salt Lake area. That included a 4 day stay in the hospital.
  6. If everything is normal in there expect a quick revision. I wasn't so lucky my band had slipped so high up my esophagus not to mention the scar tissue was all around it and to top it off the band was a French band Dr had never seen before, 1hr surgery turned to over 3 hours. Month out though I'm good and 50lbs lighter! Just started soft solid I can eat everything no stuck feeling but I do get that full feeling loving it.

    Acid Reflux

I had the sleeve 5 1/2 years ago. Recently my acid was so bad it was literally taking over my body and me! The doctor said the only thing to fix it would be RNY. So I had bypass on June 12th. No acid whatsoever now because the part of the stomach that produces acid is no longer there. If you suffer from bad reflux before your sleeve, I would suggest talking with your doctor to see if RNY is not a better option for you. IMO there is no difference in post op or recovery. It seems like a lot of people on this forum have had sleeve revisions to RNY down the road because of bad acid.

    Acid Reflux

I have been a sufferer of GERD for awhile (even before surgeries)...I had the sleeve several years ago and I suffered with GERD. I just recently had a revision from the sleeve to a by-pass and my GERD has greatly improved! I was told by my dr to continue taking my GERD prescription meds for now....but that eventually I will probably no longer have GERD. Good Luck!

    Heartburn from Hell

I had a sleeve 5 1/2 years ago. Just had a revision to RNY on the 12th. I had terrible stomach acid to the point it was taking over my body! The sleeve will not prevent acid reflux since the partnof your stomach that produces acid is still there. My doctor suggested RNY because he said that is the only way Ito finally get rid if my reflux. If you do have a lot of acid before your procedure, you may want to talk to your doctor to see if RNY would be a better option for you now, rather than maybe revision down the road. congrats to your husband for his success!
  13. My surgeon told me that by the end of summer, 9 months after sleeve surgery, I would be done losing weight. I'm just wondering if anyone understands this. Is this bc my metabolism will be used to my low calories? I still have about 40 lbs to lose yikes! Band to sleeve revision surgery 1/16/17 HW: 283 CW: 199 GW: 160
  14. Most of my weight is in my tummy. I can't wait to get rid of it! I've had 4 kids (including a set of twins whose combined weight was almost 14 lbs). I'm setting my goals in my head but I'm not sure how much weight will come off with a tummy tuck. Can anyone give me an idea? Thanks! Band to sleeve revision surgery 1/16/17 HW: 283 CW: 199 GW: 160

    Heartburn from Hell

As noted, it can be dietary changes causing the problem and there are a number of over the counter meds that can help with them. However, the sleeve can cause reflux problems in some, so if you are having problems with it pre-op, the sleeve may not be the best procedure. If the reflux is caused by a hiatal hernia (very common in morbidly obese people,) that can be corrected when the sleeve is done and the problem never reoccurs. For others, the problem gets worse, or crops up where it never existed before, and medication is needed long term (short term use of PPIs for a few months is a normal post op protocol), or even a revision to a bypass in the more extreme cases. This is certainly something that I would want to get evaluated before surgery, as it may influence choice of procedure.
  16. I had my first surgery back in 1994 I didn't tell anyone. Not my mom or my friends or any of my family not even my boyfriend/fiancé who's now my husband. Just recently I've undergone a revision/conversion and have kept it to myself again except my husband now knows what's going on. I don't have time to deal with the drama and people's negative thoughts and comments so it's just better to avoid any If possible. I've lost 10 pounds so far and my friend did ask I just told her I'm sticking to my diet as my health depends on it, it's strict and rewarding. That's all they need to know. Best of luck. I hope whatever you decide works out the best for you. Good luck with your surgery. 17. Hi All, I am considering a revsision from a lap band to a sleeve. I've gained all my 150-lbs. back from my initial weight loss. I realize there is a forum just for band-to-sleeve but I'd like to hear from people who've had their sleeve many years. I am concerned I will gain my weight back just like I always do. And then I'll be with most of my stomach gone. I am also afraid of constant nausea, diarrhea, etc. complications. I know there can always be problems. I worry because this is a no-going-back procedure. I've had problems with my lapband and it is unfilled, but now I have this option of getting it removed and trying something else. With permanent removal of part of my stomach, there's no revision to turn to. I guess bypass would be an option. So scared of that. Any replies appreciated.

    August 2017

August 8th here. But I will be a revision from band to DS. I've been taking centrum chewable multi, citrical (calcium Citrate), 2 - 2000iu vit D, 325mg ferrous sulfate 3x a day, 50,000 iu VitD once a week, and once a week 1ml shot of Vit B. Plus I had two iron infusions all during my preop testing phase. I'm so ready for this revision!
  19. When I had my lap band in 5 years ago I got a lot of negativity from people I thought would support me. I know sometimes it was jealousy and sometimes concern, but it hurt because I felt like I had made a decision to better me, to better my health and it was a hard decision. Then when I regained 100+ pounds and now I had it removed it was a lot of I told you so. I actually told very few people about the revision, and the rest think I only had the removal. I didn't want to hear it from them. You are making the choice to take care of you, and only you can decide what makes you feel good. Don't let them make you feel bad for doing what's best for you. Good luck!
  20. I completely understand. I have spent months in therapy discussing my issues with food and the crap my mother said to me as a kid. To this day, we cannot get through a food situation without her talking about weight loss or weight watchers. If I make poached eggs she asks "are you back on weight watchers?" I am over discussing my weight with her. Therefore, I didn't tell my parents I had the revision. I lie. I won't commit to dinners until I can start eating again. I don't care if it's lying. It is my medical history and my choice. In future I will just say I am eating more proteins, eating less, and making better choices.
  21. Hello everyone, so I am having a revision (lap-band to sleeve) on 7/18/2017. Aside from husband who for the most part supports my decision and understands why I need WLS, the rest of my family does not. Take my mother for instance, she went as far as saying she had a dream I died and then went on to try to talk me out of my revision. She even started to tell me stories of people who successfully lost the weight w/o surgery! I cut our conversation short. You would think the woman who saw me struggle with my weight all my life would be the 1st to understand why this is necessary. I was 190 lbs in 5th grade for crying out loud! A. Anyway, pardon the rant- I'm just wondering has anyone else had lack of support and had family discourage them, and if so how did you deal? other hand- my mother, who I speak to everyday does not.
  22. I had my revision on 6/26/2017. I feel like I may be an oddball because I'm not seeing other threads with the absence of issues. Please understand that I'm thankful and wish we all could feel this way, but I'm starting to wonder if I'm an anomoly. I am able to drink fluids and water without issues. I'm supposed to be on liquids only but absolutely feel like I could progress to soft foods. (I have snuck had a cheese nip or two). I don't get esophageal spasm unless I take a big gulp, or drink too rapidly. I only feel gross after eating if I choose to eat/drink something full of sugar or fat, or if I eat too rapidly, even though I think I'm going slow, but apparently not slow enough. I have really struggled on the liquid diet in that I'm so over this. I like most people, love to chew. I was never one to drink smoothies, milk shakes or eat soup or yogurt. I want to chew! Lets just say I haven't been the most compliant patient on liquids. What is my point? Not sure. I guess I just want to know if there is anyone else out there who feels like I do?
  23. Okay folks here it is..i had original surgery in 2002 January, had a revision three years ago..have had bouts of pancreatitis off and on which to my understanding can be fatal...had a scope done by my bariatric doctor. He said I had candycane syndrome. Said it is likely the culprit of pancreatitis attacks. So Monday I go in for that repair on my small intestine. My question is this....Has anyone ever experienced this syndrome? and did it get better after surgery to correct the problem? from what I have read it is relatively rare, and article says ninety four percent correction after surgery which is dam good in my opinion. Oh starting weight before original was five hundred, weight now is three fifteen.

My email is aka_et@me.com You can find me on Instagram and or Facebook. However I do not discuss anything about my weight loss surgery on either media account. I don't care to do so. But I do discuss being a vegan. Aka_ET HW-220 Pre-op 194.3 RNY SD June 16th 2017 CW-188 GW-140 HT 5' 3" [emoji120][emoji878][emoji1272] "You may see me struggle but you will never see me quit"

    Hospital stay

That's intense leave the same day no way I would have been able to. I guess it could have been since I had a revision and the band was unknown to doctor so what should have been 45 min turned into 3 hrs. But I wasn't good till the next day
