    August surgery buddies!

    The exercise routine is not going great, because there is so much snow, and it's hard to walk outside when the snow is up to your knees. Normally, I would exercise by shovelling snow, but like you my shoulder is hurting so I can't. I was supposed to have shoulder surgery on Monday, but I had to cancel due to unexpected cost. I did buy a 6 month card at the gym this week and was planning to go to a zumba class this morning, but my car got stuck in the snow and I couldn't go, since the weather was too bad for me to walk to the gym. Hopefully the weather and the roads will be better tomorrow and next week, and the sidewalks shovelled, so I can take a walk and also go to the gym.

    Post op complications

    I had stricture. It’s not fun. I was on liquids for 4 weeks. Couldn’t tolerate water at all. Even now my water has to be flavoured. I was on hydralite icy poles to help. It was a hit and Miss to what I tried. The dr gave me domperidone( anti nausea medication) I took it twice a day. then tried soft foods but it had to be sloppy. 3 1/2months down the track and I’m still on soft or sloppy foods. A lot of fruit shakes and protein shakes. I had to go back in to have my oesophagus ballooned. This stopped my “foaming” but I was also limited to no more then 200mls per sitting.

    August surgery buddies!

    Hello all, how is everyone’s exercise regime going? I have managed to walk an hour or more a day for 4 days this week. Spent an hour in the pool doing laps and half hour in the spa. im unable to do anything else as the shoulder is still giving me grief. But I have returned to working as it’s one of the busy times of the year for me and orders are piling up.

    What do you eat in a day 3+ years out?

    I don't really have a typical day, either, although I'm still tracking at 7.5 years out. I've been eating in the 1600-1800 calorie range for quite awhile (I do exercise most days of the week), but I'm trying to lose a few lbs now so I'm trying to keep it at or under 1600.
  6. I have to tell someone !  I2 years ago I wore a size plus  28/30.  I was over 300 pounds.  Today. I bought size 13/14 petite jeans. In the junior department of target.  I am 66 years old.  I have not had any plastics or skin removal so there is that too.   But I haven’t worn a size 14 since college. In 1978 or there about.  I recently lost a few more pounds -  my size 16 jeans were saggy… I went shopping alone.  I thought my old jeans had stretched out. Wrong !!!  Every size 14 fit.  Bought 3 pr of jeans !!

    What do you eat in a day 3+ years out?

    I'm not quite 3 years out yet (that'll be next month), but there isn't a 'typical' day for me. I used the weight loss phase to get into a new mindset and learn to eat in a sustainable way. Which is what I do. I eat around 1600-2000 calories depending on the day (but only count calories if my weight goes up past what I allow myself, i.e my comfortable zone). I'm 188 right now and as long as I'm still in the 180's I'm okay (if it goes into the 190's I start counting calories. I put on some weight after starting a med for my Trigeminal Neuralgia and was only able to lose about half of what I put on, but I figure that's probably the normal weight gain I heard you gain in your second year anyway so I just shrug it off or try to, anyway). What I ate today: Breakfast: Granola bar & 2 Caramel Rice Cakes Snack: No Sugar Added Mandarin Orange Fruit Cup Lunch: Leftover Chicken Fetticini Snack: Protein Shake Dinner: Turkey Potato Skillet I just had blood work done and my blood work is almost perfect (have low sodium, but that's due to my anti-anxiety meds. They told me to drink more lol).

    eating out at pureed stage

    This seems to be about 6 weeks of pureed, which is what my plan was 19 years ago. I would advocate being careful this early out. I didn't pay close enough attention and created some issues for myself which was embarrassing and stressful. As a result it took some time to get the self induced stress under control. It seems to me that the possible pureed-like foods available seems very much dependent on the type of restaurant(s) being entertained. It seems you should be able to manage something akin to mashed stuff. Ground meats would likely be available in a variety of cuisines. If worse comes to worse one could always feign a minor stomach ailment then have something earlier or later that fits into your program. Good luck, Tek
  9. I'm joining some friends and family for an evening out of town next week. I'm on the pureed diet until January 9th and we're planning on getting dinner out at a restaurant. Does anyone have any suggestions on dining out at the pureed stage? Worst case scenario I can just bring a shake with me...

    It's strange to see the difference in protocols between surgeons! Mine only requires a high protein, low carb liver shrinking diet for 2 weeks before the procedure and clear liquids for 1 day before. Fascinating some places require 2 weeks of liquids.
  11. Hey guys! I'm three weeks post- op from Gastric Sleeve. Just curious as to if anyone else has had something called water nausea? I have not been able to drink water in any form (iced, room temperature, hot, flavored, etc...) without it coming back up the second it hits by stomach. The only fluids I have been able to keep down are Gatorade zero or tea with no calorie sweetener. Recently, Gatorade zero has also become like water to the extent where it makes me sick or very nauseous. Also, I'm in the soft foods and I was told I should be eating at least a quarter of a cup of soft foods, but I can't get through one bite that's smaller than my pinky nail without having an intense pain in the center of my upper stomach below the sternum. The pain has convinced me that eating in general just isn't worth it and I have the same issue when it comes to protein shakes. Has anybody experienced this and have any helpful advice? I've had to get fluids for the two weeks and my doctor says it's all normal, but it's causing me to spiral into a pit of depression because everyone I've talked to has said they never experienced anything like this and therefore can't give me advice.

    Post OP Pain

    Actually I think it is gas pain, just not the kind you may be thinking of. It's not gas in your intestines, it's from the gas (most likely carbon dioxide, a.k.a. CO2), that they pump into your abdominal space during surgery. This puts pressure on everything inside that space, and can irritate things like the peritoneum (the lining over the abdominal organs). That said, I think for most people, the worst pain is the pain they feel in the lower chest, or even up into the shoulder. This is again caused by the surgery gas putting pressure put on the diaphragm, which irritates the phrenic nerve. Eventually this gas will be reabsorbed back into your tissues, then into your bloodstream, and will eventually be processed out by your lungs. In short, you'll actually breathe it out. For most people this can take up to a week or so, but it should be getting better every day. In the interim, 2 things seem to help most people: Walking. This helps move things around, especially the CO2 that may have settled under your diaphragm, but keep in mind that when you walk, you are also turning over more oxygen & CO2, which speeds up the process of removing the CO2 from your blood. Most recommendations are you walk at least 15-20 minutes every 2 hours, but more is better. Hot pads. This can help as well, and it works for many of the same reasons walking does. You are dilating blood vessels which helps your body process the extra CO2 and pull in more oxygen. You may also be feeling some incisional pain, but for most people this is more minor in nature. I will close by mentioning that if it's NOT getting better every day, contact your team ASAP. There is a possibility something else is going on with you and they will be in the best position to advise you. Best of luck.
  13. Hi All! Summary: I'm bored of my go to meals. What healthy options do you love? Detail: I am almost 3 years out and have put on a few pounds from my low - 155 to 170 at 5'10. I think I'm still in the normal "bounce back" gain range but I want to make sure I stop any further gain. I work out pretty heavy: 3 days of HiiT, 1 day hiking, 1 day yoga plus daily dog walks. I had stopped tracking all my food but started back up and I am around 2000 calories a day which with exercise seems to be right (when I am tracking and staying there my weight stopped moving). My challenge is I tend to eat 3 meals plus an afternoon snack and I am looking for lower calories, lean protein options. I tend to like one pot or casserole type meals v. a piece of meat and side dish but I am open to any thoughts! For those of you curious, a regular day for me may be: Breakfast: Coffee w/ half and half and Green smoothie (with protein, frozen fruit & frozen spinach) Lunch: Chicken salad Snack: Greek yogurt with keto granola Dinner: Ground chicken tacos with carb conscious tortilla's or Breakfast: Coffee w/ half and half and 2 eggs on an english muffin Lunch: Chef salad Snack: Premier protein shake Dinner: Au gratin vegetables casserole with chicken dinner sausage I may also have dessert which is usually sugar free jello/sugar free jello pudding made with Fairlife skim milk Thanks for sharing!     I will be getting a call from the nutritionist at Pompeii 2 weeks before surgery. I imagine that they will put me on a liquid diet for 1 week and clear liquids for the last week.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

    I’m currently 22 weeks pregnant. Have only gained 11lbs so far in pregnancy. My baby bump is just a bump - not like my last pregnancy where I gained so much weight I was just a giant fat person. Eating the proper foods and nutrition is incredibly manageable. My low was 183, I’m keeping that as my marker on this site and will continue updating once I have this babe. I figure it’s not quite the same experience being pregnant, so my weight loss journey, in a sense, is on hold. Yesterday I had two people comment and say I don’t even look pregnant (shirt was hiding the bump) but that was a weight loss compliment. We’re going to Florida next week and I’ve had a hell of a time trying to find a bathing suit that fits my flat a$$ and big belly. I did though! The need for maternity clothes has been a challenge as I’m Constantly confused by my size due to the weight loss. I can pull my size 10 jeans up and they’re loose, but they don’t button - that’s a win in my book! Hope you all are doing great! Cheers to the new year!! Happy Holidays!! ❤️
  17. I've been to three and one OBGYN. They don't know. Hormones are normal on every test. Very slight hirsutism began at 14 (faint hairs on my abdomen). But by 21 I was growing a beard and my body hair was wolf man level. No answers for that or my severe acne which was practically all over my body. They can't figure it out. They say ''genetics'' but not one parent has those kind of characteristic's. Both parents are fair haired, thin people. My Mother only had to shave her legs once a week or longer and I don't ever recall her having facial hair. Both parents are thin too with no history of adolescent or adult acne. A total mystery.

    Happy my soft phase is over this week, was feeling a little bored with food even though I was having different things, but I guess it was the cooking method and textured. Found my sweet spot with food portion, I can have between 1oz to 2oz, but once I go a little over 1.5oz, I start the cues. So now my leftovers are 1.25oz which I know I will be satisfied with. Had support meeting with nutritionist this week, went well, she answered all the questions we had and more.

    Oh great, I was waiting for 1 month post op before starting anything other than walking. But I also only have the lifting restriction until week 5 or 6 depending. I do still feel that sore muscle when bending but my surgical glue is coming out of the side incisions since I sleep on my side.
  20. The best thing you can do now, as @kcuster83 said, is practice the habits that make you nervous and see if you can integrate them into your lifestyle, because they're non-negotiable post-op. My program doesn't have a restriction on drinking before meals but says no liquids until 30 minutes after meals, which annoyed me at first but now I hardly think about. I set a 30 minute timer on my watch when I'm done eating and I usually forget about it until it goes off. Wait until you have your consult to find out what your program's guidelines are, particularly around vitamins. They probably won't be as onerous as you're imagining -- I take a multi with iron + nexium in the morning, then 3 calcium chews at intervals throughout the day, and by 6 PM I'm done and I don't have to think about it again until the next morning. Reminders on your phone or smart watch if you have one help a lot. I also recommend getting a pill divider that has a separate case for each day of the week -- mine has a morning/mid-day/afternoon/evening compartment for each case, Sunday-Saturday. In the morning I just take out that day's case, stick it in my purse, and then I have it with me all day for when my reminder goes off. I know some people will also keep spare vitamins and calcium at work in case they forget. ETA: This is the pill organizer I use, it's quite small. There are even smaller options if you don't care about having them divided up by time of day, like this one or this one.

    So glad to hear you are doing so well. I'm doing well, as well, thanks. I've lost about 40 lbs. I need to lose another 13 or so to have a normal BMI. But I'm quite happy with my weight loss. It has been very slow throughout this process. I'm averaging a pound a week. But that's better than not losing, or God forbid, gaining. I'm going on a cruise for Christmas. Bathing suit, size 10. Great to be there again. I hope all is well with everybody

    Chest pressure

    2 weeks post op you are still way way early in the healing. chest pressure is normal. Your stomach is inflamed so it holds very little right now. Its up to you if you want to contact your doctor. I bought a oximeter and a blood pressure machine to keep an eye on things after my surgery.

  25. I would try to eat sugar free jell-o each day that I was on my liquid diet. It would help me with the need to chew. My sleeve was on 12/2/22 and I'm doing well. I still forget to give myself enough time between bites or sips. Once I started soft foods my weight loss stalled. I'm still a bit sore but I'm mostly fine.
