  1. I would recommend at least three weeks maybe even four, especially if you cannot drink water on the job. I'm just over four weeks out and I still feel very fatigued and lethargic even though I'm getting all my water and protein in. I'm a teacher but at least I can sit at my job. I took one week off but needed to take multiple sick days off since then because I've felt so bad.
  2. I went back after 2 lasted 4hrs went home and took another 2 weeks off I was so sore and exhausted dont push yourself listen to your body good luck xxxxx
  3. I am 3 weeks post-op and today is the first day I have actually felt "normal." Now, I haven't felt badly for the past 3 weeks, but I've not been up to sorts. My main complaints have been that my energy level has been low and my ability to focus on complex matters has not been up to par. Today, tho, was a real milestone for me and really the first day that I woke up, ready to face the day. I'm 65 years old, too, so my ability to rebound is not the same as that of a younger person. I do have to say that I may have fared better had I done a better job of keeping myself hydrated and nourished with protein the first couple of weeks. My surgeon says that mine is a normal case and the symptoms described above to be expected. Every case is different and your mileage may vary. As to not being able to drink at the register, I would think that any conscientious, responsible employer would allow you to do so if your request was supported by a doctor's note.

    Acid Reflux Problems-Need Help!

Ask your Dr if it's possible you have a hiatal hernia (not sure my spelling is correct on that). I had one and didnt know it. He repaired it during my lapband surgery and i've only had one bout since surgery! Before surgery, it was a couple times a week, and i was on double doses of protonix, morning and night. Now, i'm only on single doses once a day and as i said only one time in 4 months! Good luck to you! Tkl

I take my Nexium when i get up around 5am. then, one multi centrum, vitamin c, and my b-12 around 8-9 a.m with bfast then 2 hours later take 2 b.a. calcium chews. i then have another b.a. 2 calcium with lunch around 1 pm. Take vitamins all at once?

I have not had surgery yet, but they recommend you take one mont prior. I take multi and calcium chew in a.m. iron chew at lunch, multi and calcium chew after work or with dinner. i also do a sublingual b-12 twice a week, vitamin c daily, and fish oil daily. i agree, the chewable multi are so nasty. i have the orange ones from bariatric advantage and they taste horrible! Implants

I had mine in Mexico, too, but my surgeon's office is always available via phone and email. Do you have any contact info for yours? But basically, there are many different thoughts on the whole post sleeve NSAID debate. Some say no NSAIDS ever and I've read posts from some on here that take ibuprofen daily. And then there's everything in between. We just have to be careful because of the gastric irritation and ulcers that NSAIDS can cause. I was assured that occasional use was not a problem. And in fact, I was actually sent home with 5 days of a sublingual NSAID. My surgeon feels that the benefit of reducing surgical inflammation immediately postop outweighs the risk of ulcers. And like I said, he advised taking a PPI like omeprazole if I had to take NSAIDS for an extended period of time. I actually just had this conversation with him (via email) two weeks ago because my PCP wanted me to take 10-14 days of an NSAID or steroid (which can also cause gastric irritation) for a compressed nerve in my neck. I ended up taking the steroid and Prilosec.
  10. I was given a 6 week no swallowing whole pills restriction, but every surgeon is different. The hospitalist tried to tell me I'd have to crush pills forever because the new stomach is too small to quickly break down a big pill and you'd just poop it out. I'm ultimately going with my own doc's advice, as the hospitalist was not strictly a bariatric doc. I'm just wondering about time released stuff. Can't crush that.
  11. Sounds like you are experiencing dumping syndrome caused by trying to consume too much at a meal. Are you constraining yourself to the prescribed meal volumes? Another possibility is that you developed a stricture. But I would think at 3 months, this is rather late. In some cases, scar tissue or inflammation can narrow the new connection between the stomach and intestine. This is called a stricture. Strictures usually develop four to six weeks after surgery, and rarely occur. Patients with strictures will notice that they are progressively less able to take in fluids and food. Strictures can be treated with an endoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube with image sensors and special tools at the tip. A doctor will use an endoscope with a tiny inflatable balloon at its tip to open the stricture. Anyways it is important to focus on the most important elements which are Protein, fluids and Vitamins. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into energy and thus you lose weight. So from what you said, work on your protein problems. At your stage another option other than Protein shakes becomes available. These are Protein Bars such as Quest Bar.
  12. I'm doing great. I'm a little miserable as far as the bloating and the pain from the actual incisions. Otherwise, I'm doing so much better. I was re-opened so that the band could be pushed up a bit. In a week and a half I had lost 30 lbs. About 6 lbs of that was due to dehydration for which I was hospitalized twice. Now, I'm at 247lbs. I figure that's not too bad considering that I was unable to eat or drink for 11 days. I've passed my one week of liquids and now I get to find out for myself what kinds of foods (besides beef) I am able to tolerate. I'm in a weird place in the mushy phase because I was banded about 3 weeks ago but was adjusted a little over a week ago. At this point, I just kind of try and see what I'm able to tolerate. Thanks for all the support! I couldn't have made it through the second surgery without all of you!

    Finally!!!!

Good for you. I was banded in April, had two fills since one 4 cc another 2 cc and I'm still waiting for restriction. The only thing helping me lose is staying on a 1000-1200 cals a day and workout 3x a week. I feel like just saying don't worry about fills and just suck it up and suffer being hungry all the time. I'll let everyone know if I ever feel that wonderful feeling of restriction when it happens!

    Dumping...

I never experienced dumping until I was about seven months post-op. Even then I did not have any vomiting. I ate some red grapes and the light headedness hit me about an hour later. Most folks (about 2/3) experience dumping within 15 to 30 minutes following a meal. The other 1/3 don't have any symptoms for one to three hours. How do you know it's dumping? Dumping is caused by the rapid movement (dumping) of food from the pouch into the small intestine. The symptoms are thought to be caused by the dumping of large amounts of sugars into the small intestine (hyperglycemia). In response, the body releases large amounts of insulin to absorb the sugars which causes your blood sugar to crash (hypoglycemia). Once you understand what dumping is and you connect it with what you ate, pretty easy to put the two together and know that it's dumping. In the case of my grapes, I was curious so I checked my blood sugar which was 50 - the insulin released by my body caused my sugar to crash and the light headedness followed. Dumping is not very pleasant but in the overall scheme of things, it is not considered serious from a medical perspective in all but the rarest of cases. It's also worth noting that you might experience dumping with a particular food but eat the same food weeks or months later and have no problem. So you may want to try some foods periodically.

    Back at work and exhausted

That's exactly what I was worried about too. I'am taking 2 weeks off and I work in the ER. Why don't you go back to your Dr. Office to get more time off? Good luck

    Please Help!

There are a ton of Protein shakes out there and since you're three months away from your surgery, now is the perfect time to do a little experimenting. For my money, Pure Protein and Myoplex are the best tasting shakes on the market. Pure has 35g of protein per serving and Myoplex has 42g. I prefer Pure because it's 160 cals. vs. 300 cals. for Myoplex. But Myoplex still gets the nod for the best tasting but not by much. A number of folks here on the forum are big fans of Muscle Milk. Others love Syntrax. And the list goes on and on. Protein can be expensive so buy one and see what you think. If you like it, great. If not, but one of something else until you find one that works for you. Once you find one you like, you may want to experiment with the powdered version of their product. powder is about 50% cheaper than the ready to drink shakes and there is usually is not much of a difference in taste. One more suggestion - check out Capella flavor drops. There are a bunch of them so finding one (or more) you like is just a matter of experimenting. Here's the link http://capellaflavordrops.com/. There's also a new thread "Protein shake Recipes" here on the forum that will give you some ideas. Down the road you can experiment mixing bananas or other fruit with your shakes but, depending on your doctor, you may not be able to do that for several weeks following your surgery. You can also search the forum for protein recipes and get some great ideas as well. Getting all of the protein recommended by your doctor following your surgery is quite important. Remove all of the Water from your body and 75% of the stuff that's left is protein. Every cell in your body contains protein. As cells die, protein is used by the body to replace them. Following surgery, your body needs protein to build new tissue. And protein plays a key role in protecting you from bacterial and viral infections - especially important following surgery. Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your decision. You're gonna love the new you!!

    Bowel Movements

Once a week is not very healthy. I think I heard somewhere that you should go at least once a day. You should make sure you are drinking enough water, that really helps the bowels get a move on. Also take a stool softener/laxative everyday. Besides that what I do is those wax suppositories. That's only if I have gone a day or 2 and still haven't pooped. This is a common problem, your surgeon can also give you some recommendations too.
  18. Congrats on having a date for your sleeve! You are wise to start to make changes now. I really did not do much in the way of dieting before getting sleeved and I so somewhat regret that (especially when I see someone's ticker who has a surgery date near mine and they have 2x the amount of weight because they dieted BEFORE the sleeve!) I could not let my BMI drop below 40 to be covered under my insurance, so mentally that just gave me a reason "not" to diet. BUT, the changes that I did make before getting sleeved were these: I dropped the diet soda habit. I didn't have a problem doing this (I used to drink 1-2 diet sodas per day) and back in July I quit buying soda to have in the house. So it then became an occassional treat when I would be eating out. Then sometime in early Sept. I just quit. (AND YOU CAN DO THE SAME WITH THE SWEET TEA! I would start by decreasing the amount of sugar you put in your tea, or switch to Splenda.) I also quit the coffee/caffeine habit. (beware because even regular non-sweet tea has caffeine...and I love non-sweet tea but not the caffeine.) I switched my coffee to decaf before surgery and didn't have coffee for 4 weeks post-surgery. I also decreased my carb intake. Just little changes. Instead of eggs and toast, I would drop the toast. I got in the habit of not drinking with my meals. I started taking my Vitamins BEFORE surgery to get me in the habit of taking them daily. I already was a regular exerciser, so I didn't have to do much there, but if you do not exercise I would recommend starting something you can stick with. Just even starting to walk will help you recover post-surgery, and walking is not only good, but necessary post-surgery to help prevent blood clots. THIS WILL BE AN AWESOME YEAR FOR YOU!!! I think attitude and gratitude makes a huge difference in this whole process. Going into this with the right attitude and having gratitude that you are being given a opportunity to change your life will carry you far! Good luck with everything!

    In Trouble

I've noticed too that my restriction is very inconsistent. When I first got my last fill I felt looser than before it, now several weeks later, this past week, EVERYTHING gives me trouble, even things I previously could handle with no problem. Go figure. I'm also losing soooooooo slow. Like 2 pounds in the last month or so.

    Finally!!!!

Had a very small 1/4 cc added fill, and my weight is dropping...went from 185 to 180!!!!!! Im sure the 3 day full liquids is making that look great, but it is a jumpstart mentally. My chest looks smaller and I'm feeling great. Feeling less hungry between meals and my meals are substantially smaller, getting about a half cup just this week. I think this just might b the green zone.
  21. Yesterday it rained all day. Rain meant I couldn't go out for a walk. The gas pains were really getting to me. Had to take pain meds which make me sleep. It was generally a long, slow, boring day! Today is glorious! Lots of sunshine, low humidity, and low seventies. I felt pretty good this morning (finally had a bm ), gas pains barely there, no need for meds. I did light housework then rested in the sunshine. I'll take my walk in a few, then have some lunch (more strained soup). Probably rest some more after that. Tomorrow is my one week follow-up with Dr. My daughter is taking me to my appointment and I'm REALLY looking forward to getting out of the house! Hopefully he'll clear me for driving. I love a ride on a beautiful day! :-)

  23. Hey folks! So I'm firmly in another weeks-long stall after dropping 10lbs in a week following a 6-week stall. GROAN. But that's not what I'm writing about. I'm coming to simply accept it. What I've noticed the past few weeks is, well, prickly pain around my ribcage on both sides. I'll be sitting still, or moving, and suddenly it'll feel like a couple hot needles in my side. Like when you get the blood flow back in a limb that fell asleep. It'll last just a second or two and then gone. Or I'll be sitting still, or moving, and there will be a "bubble" of achiness… it'll start small, grow, and then stop hurting, all in just a second or two. Sometimes it feels like my muscles are being "tugged" on, which reminds me of post-op pain. It doesn't seem to be related to when I eat or don't eat. Sometimes it happens when I haven't put anything in my tummy for hours. It FEELS like muscle pain. It's not bad pain. But I had surgery 3 mos ago. I hadn't had this pain until 2-3 weeks ago. I wonder if I hurt myself by helping to lift suitcases and boxes in the past month. Does this sound like I need to see somebody? I'm in the US, my doc is in Austria, and I don't have health insurance here. I can afford to pay if it's important, but obviously I'd rather not waste hundreds of dollars if it's NOT. What do you think? Thanks for your help! Amy
