Band to Bypass with low BMI - what are the real risks?
NewAngela replied to Melificent's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
After the first few months, or after, you can always take supplements to get more calories. At the end of it all, I would think you have a better chance of maintaining a "normal" BMI as opposed to the average weight loss of 60% or so excess weight. The main risk would be loosing to much fat and then loosing muscle as well, but gastric bypass patients intentionally don't have excess calories. High calorie supplements may be needed if you loose to much weight. Definitely better to do it at the time of band removal or soon after. I had the band removed due to slippage and complete obstruction and I gained over 100 pounds over 5 years or so. I just had bypass 6 weeks ago. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Wow, Isabella, 85 pounds in less than three months is incredible. Congratulations! Okay, I've just gotta ask... So, what's your secret?

FYI silicone strips to minimize scars
GaGrl replied to Pammy S Lewis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I saw those too, but went with a cheaper option. I bought a $1.50 pure Vitamin E stick. I think it is working. I am now 4 weeks out & my incision sites are beginning to take on a lighter tone. (I started using twice a day as soon as sites were healed over) Keep me posted about the strips, I am wondering how they work. Best of luck to you! -
I'm supposed to be on Optifast for 2 weeks prior to surgery. I tried on Friday, made it to shake 2...and then fell off the wagon. Am trying again today and feel super nauseous. The shakes taste okay, but I think my body is going through solid food withdrawal...already. Anyone have problems with Optifast? - Kirsten Being banded Sept 29 2006
-
I only had to do the optifast for 1 week, but I found it pretty easy. I was able to put in frozen fruit in the shakes and spice it up a bit. It's really not that bad.

I was on Optifast for 2 weeks prior to surgery. It's tough, but you can do it.

Will I eventually be able to eat more?
silverthreads replied to PaulBenn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, I wouldn't be in a rush to eat the whole hot dog & bun until you've reached your goal -- but no reason you can't shoot for half of one... If you're satisfied, that's enough, right? Seriously, I'm just ahead of you -- about 5 weeks out. My personal experience was that at 2-3 weeks I could barely eat 1.5 oz. of food. Today I find I'm quite comfortable with 2.5 oz. of lean Protein -- maybe 3 oz. but that's pushing it. The amazing thing is that even with so little I'm perfectly satisfied. I used to still be hungry 5 minutes after finishing a big meal. Gotta love the difference. I used to love going to a great restaurant and having the Chef's tasting meal. Instead I'm just going to have to settle for being a normal size and enjoying an appetizer. I can definitely live with the trade-off. -
pressure and burping, five days out
JP69 replied to Obsidian's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I still burp and have pressure occasionally, especially when I take one bite to many, and I'm 4 weeks out. The stomach gurgling is normal, its just air from eating and drinking. Does keep getting better as time goes by. -
Newbie here, scheduled for sleeve surgery on Dec. 21. I see the dietitian tomorrow and start my two-week pre-op diet on Wednesday. Sounds like the vast majority here are on a liquid diet, but mine is more of an Atkins Phase I diet -- no more than 40 g carbs per day, but not many restrictions otherwise. Anyone else on a non-liquid pre-op diet? Is this normal? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

So I've had a slight set back. My surgeon sent in my paper work 3.5 weeks ago. Haven't heard anything. With advice from you great people on here I called the insurance company to see what was going on. So long story short they sent in my paper work with the right code for the sleeve but the review board reviewed it under the band. They denied my case due to my policy, contacted my surgeon and that was all within 4 days of them sending it in. Fast forward to yesterday. No one has contacted me to let me know this had happened (really pissed at that). The lady at the insurance company was GREAT. She looked at my stuff and told me they reviewed it under the wrong procedure (she fixes it), they didn't really read my policy to see that the sleeve is covered (she wrote a note about that in my paper work) and she resubmitted it with all the CORRECT information while I was in the phone with her. Thank GOD she picked up the phone. I have a feeling that if it was someone else they would've have done all that. Hopefully by next week I should have some more news. Fingers crossed.

A Year Ago I Made a Life Changing Decision

Wow! What an inspiration. I'm 4 weeks out & just starting my journey. But your story & others like it help me so much. So happy you have your life back. -
Do yourself a favor and ONLY weigh once a week in the AM after you pee. A plateau is considered 2-3 WEEKS of staying the same weight so you're doing fine.
-
How often do you guys hit a "plateau"? I seem to have hit my first one. Two days in a row with no weight loss despite minimal calories and strong exercise. I did have sushi last night....not a lot of it....but maybe the soy is holding Water? I have had measurable weight loss nearly every day since I started 3 weeks ago...so this has me perplexed.

I haven't noticed this when taking a Bcomplex however I did feel that way while on a generic of an antidepressant called Remeron. It felt like I could eat the same amount in volume as I used to, but in reality I was unable to put away the same amount so I found myself grazing. Weight loss was nearly at a stall but came down a few lbs.

Unfortunately, I don't think June 11th is feasible for me. My director of nursing at the facility that I work at will be getting married on the 12th and then gone for two weeks. Not sure I would be allowed the time off. Do you think I would be able to get in that quick once the loan goes through?? How long did you have to schedule to get in for surgery?
-
I believe current wait time is two or three weeks witn Almanza. Not sure if you already have a passport but that's the thing I'm waiting on so I had t schedule further out of pay to expedite my passport.

Confused....advice from a nurse please!
waterlily1072 replied to Yoda's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Well I was afraid to pull anything off, bandaids or steristrips and they were still there at my one week post op. Surgein pulled off the bandaids and some of the sterisstrips as well and told me to work on the others later that day. LOL. He said they needed air to heal faster -
Two weeks ago I had to take my cat to the ER vet to have his eye surgically removed because it was so badly mangled. Traumatic experience for my cat and me! The vet said it was caused from a cat fight. Apparently cat claws are very, very nasty. I won't be taking any cat scratches lightly after that! I'll clean and put antibiotic salve on any and all.

My port area was also a little sore for a couple of weeks. Even now it feels a little tender at times. But it does get a lot better. -

Talking about what comes out the other end
TwinsMama replied to Brighteyes's topic in The Gals' Room
It will be beneficial post-op for you to take something if you have probs pre-op. The only real variance will be when the Dr okays you to start them. Most Drs do agree that we may need some fiber help post-op. I've been fortunate that I'm still very regular post-op as pre-op. It was harder initially but now at 11 weeks. I'm back to pooping at least once each day. Pre-op I went after every meal. -
Leatha, she probably did 95% of that stuff when she stayed w/ you last week!
-
I really eat differently than you - at my surgeon's request. I had two weeks on the liquid diet and really felt that I was suffering the last few days. But now I am able to have fat free yogurt and cottage cheese, low fat cheese, chicken and fish. I eat 6 small meals a day - about every 2 1/2 to 3 hours totalling 60 grams of protien and no more than 1000 calories a day. I have to say that I am satisfied and feeling good.

For the first few weeks your body is in a major heal mode and it takes a little time for things to kick off. During the hospital it is common to gain some weight because they fill your body with fluids and it takes a little time to loose this new weight. It is also common to hit stalls. The three most important elements after RNY surgery it to meet the daily requirements for fluids, Vitamins and Protein. Also walk for 30 minutes per day. So be a little patient, follow the requirements and let the magic happen.
