Advice Needed During Wait
pr737 replied to tracybshaw's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm in a similar position. My insurance requires a six month medically supervised diet. I'm exactly at a BMI of 35 with high blood pressure. I can't lose or gain weight. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Hi Everybody! My name is Kati and I am in Eureka, Ca. I am pre-op gastric bypass, and will be having my surgery done at UCSF with Dr. Carter (has anyone else had him???) My pre-op appt is June 7, and I have a tentative surgery date of June 26, which will be finalized at the pre-op appointment. I have yet to have my info sent to insurance, but the medical assistant at the surgeon's office has reviewed my file and has determined that I have met all of the insurance requirements, fingers crossed! I have to travel 5 hours for my surgery, and then home after, and am a bit nervous about that. Has anyone else had experience with this? I have been overweight since my teenage years, but my dysfunctional relationship with my body and food began long before. I remember thinking I was fat at age 4. My highest weight ever was 330. I am currently vacillating between 315 and 321. I am scared most right now about insurance covering it, I have Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield in CA. Anyone else have experience with them? I look forward to learning from and getting to know ya'll!

Hi, I was recently banded April 7th, 2011. Before the surgery I had to do a semi liquid diet and now post-op I am doing a completely liquid diet of Clear liquids and Protein shakes. Since January 24th, 2011 I have been starting to get back into a diet I managed to lose 24 pounds with a few ups and downs before my surgery.... Now I have lost a total of 41 pounds since surgery and am going through hell trying to stick with liquids. I haven't cheated or anything but I literally dream of pizza every night! I have a few questions with the mushy stage to come: 1. Will I gain all the weight back I have worked my butt off to lose? 2. Will I start to feel better? Because right now I feel like I just had surgery... 3. What type of foods did you guys eat in order to keep the weight off? Thanks so much.Looking forward to the tips !

Hi guys!!! I was on a losing streak for a while and made my thanksgiving day goal early! Now I am stalled! I went up 2 lbs and have been losing a few oz.'s at time. I wanted to hit onderland by christmas, but, looks like I may have to move it to new years!!! But, I am so thankful for my sleeve. I am able to eat everything and more than I thought I was gonna be able to. which I am kinda greatful for too, because one of my biggest fears was that I wouldnt be able to eat at all. Anywho! People are starting too notice the weight coming off (74 since I started my pre op diet) and I feel good about myself. I am 4 months out and still have a long way to go, but, I am so happy. I wish I had done this sooner!!! No regrets!!! except for the hair loss! LOL!, but, I'm dealing! But, I discovered Joan rivers hair powder. It works awesome. I have thinning hair at my part and crown, this powder stuff hides my shiny scalp and boosts my confidence!!! Yay!

I Drank Alot Of Broth.... Help Please!
smileen replied to Magsnlucy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told by my nut. to have no more than 1/3C at each meal until my 3rd month then 1/2C. so I measured it out in a bowl and eat slowly then I don't have to worry about overdoing. It was explained to me why it seems we can eat more when on liquids is that the stomach is like a funnel the fluid goes in and drains out quickly as you begin eating thicker food they will take longer to funnel out thats one of reasons not to drink with meals so it will not pass through quickly and we stay fuller longer! Good weight loss! -

I would suggest bringing your own Snacks to meetings that might be a little longer & you know might be tempting. Something as simple as a Protein bar, Protein Drink or any drink could keep you satisfied & pre-occupied. Just think about this great journey you've been on, and how well you've done for yourself. Remember, always plan ahead. Great job on the weight loss! -
90+ days post-op...and worrying again...
WildIris posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
So, I'm down to a size 10 in jeans, and my hubby commented last night that I look even better now (at age 35) than I did at 19, when we met. He doesn't give gratuitous compliments, so I can rest assured that he certainly thinks so! But I've been worrying (when do I not?) as I get further post-op, and my weight-loss slows, and my appetite increases. I also have to face the sad reality that I'm not going to be able to get back into running--I've got too much spinal arthritis. What really freaks me out is trying to figure out to maintain a stable weight long-term given the realities of my past physical injuries catching up with me and making it difficult to get regular exercise without paying for it later in terms of having to take muscle relaxants and prescription pain medication (it's really that bad ). I guess it's back to the old 'celery-carrots-and-string-cheese' snacking, instead of nuts (no matter how raw they are). And various other tricks I learned as a diabetic...that's the one that really freaks me out, is the idea of having to go back on insulin. -
The calorie/protein count seems a bit high. You really should contact your nutritionist or surgeon. Everyone's needs are different, based on their weight and activity level. It is very normal for your weight loss to plateau, and I don't believe your body is in starvation mode if you are eating the proper amount of Protein. Be patient, and stick to yout nut's guidlines. Good luck!

Hey i would say your only plateaued for 2 weeks. thats not bad id stick with what your doing and give it like another week or 2.. and if your doing 1000 cals a day id switch it up.. one day take in like 1200 and another 900. and switch up your diet a lil dont eat the same foods allthe time. you dont need to consume too much more to get out of starvation mode just by eating at different tmes during the day and fluctuating the amount of calories you take in a day should help to kick start it again.. also when you work out you doo gain muscle soo your body might be adjusting to that now. but its good cause ur loosing inches maybe not the scale,.. def give it some more time. goodluck!

My nut said I should be eating 1000 calories a day and at least 60 grams of protein. Well I have been doing that from the beginning, and have been loosing up until 2 weeks ago. I have not lost anything! I haven't changed anything along with working out 4-5 times a week. Out of frustration, I looked online to see how many calories I should be eating a day to reach my goal weight. It stated I should be eating 1700 calories and 97 grams of protein with the amount of exercising I am doing. Also, that weight loss will happen in the beginning but then my body will eventually go into starvation mode and I will not loose anymore. Which I am wondering what is happening now? Is it possible that I am in starvation mode and unable to loose weight? I know the band is a tool and I use it as if it is. But honestly, without snacking in between meals, how can I get 1700 calories in a day and eat healthy?

Also simply going through surgery can mess with your body. Trauma from surgery can cause hair loss. FYI, it may also mess up your period for a few weeks too. Everyone else is right. The hair loss is from rapid weight loss and lack of protein. I lost a lot, but had a ton to start with, so only I noticed. My Dr said I needed at least 80gms of protein a day and to take Biotin supplement. The biotin will make your nails long and strong too. If I can't get 80gms of solid, food protein, then I supplement with a protein shake once a day.

Trying to make a decsion between VSG/RNY
CraftyChristie replied to sunnidaz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would say the same as everyone else did so far. The mal-absorbtion is just too big a problem, especially with rare cases when someone can not stop losing weight. Also besides the comment about using the muscular part of the stomach and less stretching.... with VSG you also lose most of your Gherlin (sp?), the hunger hormone... so it really helps control hunger. I haven't had sleeve yet but these are my reasons for wanting it over RNY :frown1: -

2 weeks post op HELP
Finding the old me! replied to christina353's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Christina! 19 lbs is great! I'm 3 weeks post op and have to say that i was very similar last week losing 20 lbs and then nothing. Of course we eat almost nothing for those 2 weeks after surgery so weight is bound to come off. After a lot of reading here, i'm probably not getting enough calories in during the course of the day. I know i wasn't getting enough Protein, but the calories were 700 - 750 or day and that maybe my body was going into store mode instead of shed mode. OOPS. So i kicked up some calories 2 days ago to about 900-1000 (Still on mushies so i'm experimenting with meals to increase a bit yet til i'm on soft food by end of the week) and i've noticed a difference just in my energy level right there. The biggest change to my diet was adding in canned chicken & tuna, BLENDED to mush with light mayo. Gives me about 140 calories plus 15 grams of protein in 2 ozs or so. I also found that after adding some food the BM's improved greatly between these two weeks & the gas is all gone now. Hang in there, you'll be moving on to the next food group soon! It did get better for me & i'm only a week ahead!!! -
Week 2 and not much restriction
GeorgiaRN replied to GeorgiaRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ha ha! I guess I will have to make really good decisions and keep up sugar busters so to speak. And get to moving! I am going to do everything in my power to NOT gain any weight and maybe even lose!! -
My doctor told me I can eat between 800-1000 calories. I am 3 months out and have been sticking to 800. I feel like it's not enough anymore and tempted to move up to 900. My question is with 800 I have been eating between 650-850 and been losing about 1-2 pounds a week. Do you think if I increased to 900 it will slow my weightloss? I already lost almost 70 and I have a little less then 30 pounds to get to my goal and I don't want to ruin the steady pace I have been having. The bulk of my weight loss was the past 2 months this month has been slower but I'm happy. I hope I don't sound paranoid or goofy lol Thanks in advance for advice tips and opinions!

I had bypass, I was in the hospital for 2 1/2 days, I had no complications what so ever, the pain was minimal and I was back to work in a week !!! I am now 9 months post op and feel fantastic... it was the best thing I ever did. BTW.. you lose more weight with the RNY than the sleeve or band, that is why I chose the RNY, if I was going to do it I wanted the best bang for my buck.

Like @@jss1988 said, I had a pretest to take before meeting with the psychologist (basic psychological stuff, self-worth, family history). Then when I met with him, he warned me about some of the issues that can arise as we start to lose weight, i.e., you'll be getting more attention, how to deal with that,, also he warned that victims of sexual abuse may struggle with certain weights if the abuse occurred when you weighed a certain amount, there may be memories that you have to deal with along the way. He asked about my support network, warned that some WLS patients will look to replace food addiction with alcohol, answered my questions, and sent me on my way. It was pretty painless: mostly an informative meeting.

WHY AM I LOSING SO FREAKING SLOW!!! ARGH!!!
mbridgeman27 replied to Reese's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Trust me, I feel your pain...I was sleeved on JAN 18th, weighing 194...Today I weigh 177. Thats only 17LBS in 2 months. I think my problem is not enough fluids. I sure as heck dont overeat, I believe overeating is impossible with the sleeve. Im just really down b/c I expected to be down atleast 25-30 pounds by now. At the rate im losing, I wont be down to the weight I want for months. If you had a lower BMI like me, this is probably why were losing so slow. Best of luck to you! -
WHY AM I LOSING SO FREAKING SLOW!!! ARGH!!!
janinemaire replied to Reese's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wonder why you can't eat, are you not hungry, does it hurt when you eat? Do you have a lot more weight to lose? I also had my surgery in November and have lost exactly the same as you, 46 pounds (55 pounds with pre op) with another 70 pounds to go. I don't have trouble eating, I take in around 800-850 calories and keep my carbs 60 or under. I do eat healthy but have trouble getting all my Protein, I don't drink enough Water and have not exercised yet. I'm sure this is the cause of my slow weight lose. Which I am planning to work on but I think I am just a very slow loser, which is okay. Maybe see what else is going on, some things we can change and some things we can't but at least the scale is going down. Good luck, Janine
