  1. Hello Everyone, Had my post-op visit (first one) yesterday 9 days post-op. Surgery for RNY was December 10th. I was told I lost on my 14 day liver shrinking diet 10 lbs more pounds but my weight was at 254 today, I was so upset! That is like two pounds more than my last weigh in at the doctor's office! The doctor told me not to be alarmed that I was still swollen from the surgery and my legs were swollen as well and he was not concerned about it! It still bothered me, My scales showed a total of 248 but either way, I got home and programmed my scales to theirs and I have another follow-up appointment for January 8th. My rings are loose as well as my clothing feels looser so I truly believe I am and I say, I am on the losing side but got a bit discouraged when I am doing exactly what they have instructed on the full liquid diet! Merry Christmas to me because on Christmas day, I advance to the Pureed stage of my diet! WoooooHoooo! Anyone else have this happen to them post-surgery and if so what was your response as well to the news?
  2. So, I don't really ever cheat. Aside from a few mozzarella sticks, I've stuck to the plan. Yes, I've gotten dumping A LOT because stuff on the "plan" isn't always kosher for my particular tummy. But today. Today I set myself for failure on purpose. I ate a shortbread cookie, a ferrero rocher, and a cordial cherry. At the same time. Yes. The epitome of all that is sugar and anti-WLS. I warned my coworkers that in 20 minutes I would be dying. I knew it would happen. I did it anyway. It only took 10 minutes. I spent half an hour in the work bathroom foaming and dry-heaving. I dry-heaved so much snot up my nose started to bleed... profusely. I was hot. I had heart palpitations. I couldn't speak for an hour. It wasn't worth it. LOL. But damn the "normies" have it good being able to enjoy those treats without weight issues or dying in workplace restrooms. And no. No plans for a repeat ever again.     Sleeve gastrectomy surgery 2012 or earlier

    I'm 6 1/2 years out and I've maintained pretty well. My goal weight was 150 and I'm about 10 pounds over that right now. I recently gained about 5 pounds due to stress from my sister dying (cancer). I've been turning to food for comfort and I need to get my butt back in gear. I don't really exercise much (I'm changing that), and I've always eaten what I want but in moderation. I just started weight watchers - I want to get down to 145 because I feel that is a better weight for me. I'm really not concerned too much by the scale, but I don't like the way I feel and how my clothes fit right now. So I'm focusing on moving more and eating healthier.
  5. OMG, how are all of you coping? Where I work, everyone has been celebrating since before Thanksgiving, with food of course. And mostly crap food (also known as yummy sweets that I can't have). Fortunately, my cubicle was moved away from the kitchen/break room and the table that is often used for storing most of the food for the days festivities (which I could always smell as i worked). But where I am now... there is another table of just sweets about 8-10 feet away max. I see it every time I get up. It is always full of sweet/salty snacks that I can't have. There is never anything healthy on this table (the other one at least had some good stuff). And if seeing this table of sweets was bad enough... the staff around me are talking about the sweets ALL.DAY.LONG. Overall, I am doing pretty well despite the temptations. At most I have had 1 very small shortbread cookie, but I have had a little caramel popcorn the last few days. Not much, just enough to satisfy me. So all is good there. I certainly haven't gone crazy with my eating. But, I have to listen to the people around me talk about food/sweets ALL.THE.TIME. I do a decent job of tuning them out half of the day, but it is really getting on my nerves yesterday and today. Add to that, my "biggest" co-worker keeps going back for sweets again and again and always say really loudly "calories don't count during the holidays". Being my first post-sleeve holiday season, I am extra sensitive and that statement bugs the heck out of me. I know it shouldn't lol. Ugh. I am sitting here at my desk trying to ignore and certainly not judge those around me for enjoying the holidays and the food associated with it, but it is so hard! And I don't want them to half to change because I chose to have surgery to improve my own health. I think at least the people near where I used to sit were much more aware of my struggle and more thoughtful and supportive about it, and I really appreciated that. They at least didn't "rub it in my face" all day (not that these people are TRYING to do that), and they tried hard to be considerate when by not parading around with their food in front of me. Tomorrow is our "Christmas" lunch. It is our most fun celebration every year. I did OK with our Thanksgiving feast at work, but there were several foods I could enjoy within my diet. I hope to do well again for our upcoming Christmas dinner tomorrow, but not sure if it is possible. I won't grab sweets, but I will probably sample what I can of the regular food. Unfortunately, it sounds like there won't be a lot I CAN eat. I know the main dish this time is sandwiches. I know I can take off the rolls, but I don't really want to eat just the meat/cheese (sick of that). There will be a salad, but I am still not digesting salads very well yet. Then the rest is supposed to be potato/pasta salads and such that I really shouldn't eat (and have no desire to eat). And lots of deserts. And if I don't eat the meal, then the deserts will be calling out to me (my co-workers bring great deserts every year... that I can't eat!). I don't know if I should even go or just go home for lunch instead. I don't know. I don't want to miss out, but I fear this particular dinner might be torture. And not sure what I would want bring to eat instead. I wish I didn't HAVE to bring something as a substitute. They change the type of meal every year, and the last 2 years the food would have been great for me... this year... not so much. Anyhow... sorry for the vent, but I figured some of you would understand whereas no one around me will!

    Body dysmorphia

    Body dysmorphia is real and very weird. It really does take a while for the brain image to connect with the body image. When I was fat, I never thought of myself as anything but a little overweight. When I look at old pictures, I am horrified at how fat I really was. Then I had surgery and the lost 100 in 6 months. Wow. I then still "thought: of myself as overweight and felt like I had "lost" ME, as my body looked so differently in the mirror. All the new wrinkles and sags and disappearing breasts made me look like a very old woman. I lost confidence and thought people looked at me like I was an old hag. Now, after 10 months, my weight has stabilized and a lot of the sags have somehow become less. People actually tell me that I look younger and very healthy. "Amazing" is a word I hear now. And now that I am feeling amazing physically and doing things I never would have dreamed of a year ago, I am starting to see myself that way, too. It is truly an up-and-down experience, one I was not prepared for, but am now happy with. My brain is finally accepting the new body image as being ME - I didn't ever lose ME - I just needed to find ME again in a new and different way. You will, too. It just takes time.

    Pre-OP prep

    I quit for 2 years and then my husband and son were in a horrible accident, and a cop on scene gave me a cigarette. I quit again New Years 2019. In the past I had used Chantix which was a nightmare literally. Then a Dr here put me on Wellbutrin. I had to take for a month and then quit. It made it very easy. Good luck as it is a tough battle to quit smoking!

  11. Omg the gas pain is HORRIBLE! It feels like you're being stabbed sometimes. It feels absolutely nothing like gas that we are all familiar with. I had no idea that was coming even though I did lots of reading/research/etc. Thats because the gas in the body cavity itself and not the stomach. It took me about 10 days for all the gas to get out of my system and it was really bad when I was trying to sleep flat for the night. The only thing I could do to make it feel better was to walk for a good half hour and then it started to subside only to flare again in 5 hourse or so. It also could be the incision spot where it is healing not on the skin but in the fat content etc. I didn't have that problem so I couldn't tell you. BUT the gas is VERY real. It's even related to shoulder pains since the nerve around the diaphragm can get irritated and the pain travels the nerve up to the shoulder.
  12. I would never lie to people who ask... I’m dieting (fact) ... very difficult (fact) ... smaller portions (fact) ... I don’t know, I may tel them I’m still undecided. I’m actually not a big guy. I am only 17.3 stone 245 lb ish and now down to 16.4 this morning I am a type 1 diabetic and has bad news on a checkup about my eyes so that freaked me out and took this procedure to limit my food intake (carbs) and avoid a lot of sugar/carb absorption from my food. I could have just dieted for life but I have incredibly bad will power. Hands up I admit it. But I want to keep my sight. I did this 10% vanity... 40% help general diabetes... 50% keep my vision. in that respect I don’t mind telling friends and family, but I have a very judgemental family which is preventing me. The doc has giving me those ant acids tablets that melt into a weird texture in your mouth for a month.l and I take gripe water. If it is gas then so be it but it is not a pleasant feeling not something I’m used to. I’m usually on a normal day a gassy man 😛 but as I said this sucks and is painful

I had my RNY on 14th dec (2019) all went well and I was out after two sleeps the fact that Christmas is coming up is very difficult seeing all of those adverts on TV with all that delicious food LOL if you’ve had your operation since you have posted them stay strong over Christmas as I know it makes it even harder With all of that visual temptation Lee

    January 2020 Surgery Date

    My final pre-op is on 01/17/20 and then the sleeve on 1/31/20. You will be sleeved and a Subject Matter Expert, for the remainder of us. Are you wls prepped in your home? I'm buying broth everytime I go to the store, drink / water mixes, unsweetened applesauce and etc. I'm not grocery shopping for the regular staples. Do you have vitamins and what's your vitamin plan? Are you going to use smaller tools to eat, drink and prep? I have soooooooo many questions about what everyone is doing to prepare themselves. Sorry for the 200 questions.
  15. All done and drugged up. Cant stay awake for longer than 15 minutes mins. Cant stay asleep for longer than 10 mins. Weird. Surprisingly feeling well-rested despite the weird sleep cycle thing. ZERO pain (thanks drugs). So much to say, but too tired to post it. Maybe later ❤️
  16. The body fat scales measure impedance (electrical resistance) between your feet (or in the better ones, between your hands, too.) As such, they are sensitive to your body's water content - hydration - so variations in your hydration will change the readings. On mine, there was a 4-5 point difference between first thing in the morning, when we tend to be dehydrated, and late afternoon, when we tend to be more fully hydrated. So, being consistent with time of day is important. There can also be a point of two difference day to day from simple hydration variations due to diet, activity, weather, hormones, etc. Of course, there can always be differences between scales (or any other measuring instruments.) The most accurate way to measure body composition is via autopsy, but that has the undesirable side effect of having to be dead first. Next best is generally considered to be DEXAscan, which is pretty good, though there can still be differences between machines and even software loads (as it is dependent upon large population datasets.) Hydrostatic, or water dunking, (or the related BodPod, which uses air instead of water) is next best, but may be a bit quirky for us former fatties as the excess skin that we often have can create some errors in the results. The calipers are generally considered to be the least worst, as they are very dependent upon operator skill and experience to interpret the results, and given the problems of skin condition (excess) that we typically have, they are virtually worthless for us. I have found that the scales work fairly well if you have one at home and use it consistently, same time each day. Given the day to day hydration variations that we can have, it is only good within a point of two. I found that using a moving average of daily measurements worked well - as I was losing, I may have seen BF readings in the 32's and 33's, after some time I would start seeing 31's and the 33's dropped away, so I was consistently in the 31-32 range, and so on. It couldn't reliably show may anything closer, but that's a pretty good ballpark. How much variation would one see if you did a DEXA or dunking every day (I suspect similar, but maybe a bit narrower bandwidth on the variation.) Using this method, the scale was pretty consistent with the water dunkings that I had done. The way the scales are used in gyms and doctors' offices - read at month or more intervals - they are of limited value (even detrimental) as the variations from time of day and day to day hydration levels overwhelm whatever true changes have actually happened since the last reading. I played with the one in our surgeon's office when my wife was going through her surgery, and over the couple of weeks that we were in town for it, I had "gained" about 10 lb of muscle mass with no weight change. Right - from walking around the hospital and SF some every day! For the OP, if you can, try to use their scale each time you go to the gym, preferably before working out and dehydrating yourself, and keep track that way. Your readings may or may not be "accurate" on an absolute basis, but relative to where you are now and in the future, it should give some useful insight into your progress, Note, that mid teens BF% is quite lean for a woman (though about average, or "normal" for a man,) while mid 20's is "normal" for a woman. Mid teens was my target when I was in losing mode. Good luck in further progress!
  17. After 14 years, I had my lap band removed. I feel good, no post op issues, concerned that I will gain weight. My goal is to eat as if I had my lap band in place. About 6-8 months ago, I began experiencing an increase in acid reflux and symptoms related to GERDs. Two endoscopic exams showed tissue damage due to acid reflux, indications of Barrett's Esophagus, and band slippage. After a daily dose of Prilosec, the second exam six weeks after the first, eliminated Barrett's Esophagus concerns, but confirmed band slippage. Post Op of the lap band in 2005, I lost 105 lbs. Within three years, I gained about 20 lbs and maintained +/- 5 lbs for approximately 9 years to 2014. Leading up to retirement and after, I began the yo-yo weight loss-gain cycle, mostly gain. I am still down 65 lbs post op from 2005, but it has been a struggle. I think the acid reflux and early stages of GERDs was a turning point. I had been considering revision to a Gastric Sleeve for sometime, the removal of the band brought the decision to a head. However, due to the restrictive elements of a sleeve and my recent acid reflux and GERDs symptoms, my surgeon is recommending gastric by-pass over gastric sleeve. After several discussions and a lot of research, we are working toward gastric by-pass surgery possibly in March 2020. I am working on checking all the boxes for Medicare approval. The psych evaluation is complete and passed, in month 3 of the physician monitored nutrition and weight loss program, meetings with surgeon and staff, physical evaluation and recommendation from pcp is in the works. Without the restriction of my lap band, I am concerned about overeating and gaining weight during the transition while my lap band sites heals and Medicare approval.
  18. I’m currently getting a revision this upcoming Friday 12/20/19. I suffer severe chronic gerd. I had VSG 4/ 2013 and lost a lot of weight and gained a lot of it back as well.

  22. My procedure was December 10, 2019. my highest weight was 245. when I went to the doctor for evaluation it was 230. Day before surgery it is 220. one week after my surgery I'd lost 5 pounds. 215. I was a little disappointed but I'm sure it will come.

    I experienced a great deal of nausea from the anesthesia. the kept me in the hospital and extra day.  Upon my release I started to feel better. I must say that the surgery itself doesn't hurt. What does hurt is where they removed the stomach.  But I'm on my way to healing.  My surgery was on a Tuesday and I was back at work on that Monday. I have a sit down job but movement was precise.  

    Today is Wednesday 12/18/19 and I'm feeling well. I am able to get in both my protein shakes. I just sip all day. usually by days end I've finished it and start on water.  I never got the full feeling that most people have . but I do take it slow for fear of over doing it.

    I hope you surgery goes well and as of right now I have no regrets. we have to remember that this is something we will have to do the rest of our lives. watching what we eat when and how much.

  23. I was 10/7 and have lost 50 lbs in 2 months. Struggling with still eating right. Not getting enough protein. Still hungry all of the time. Not worried because my stomach is super duper small. 40-50% of 1 sushi roll and I’m stuffed. My body still craves carbs but only a little rice.

    Before and After Pics

    I came across probably the only picture I have of me at my highest weight (the day after my VSG surgery in 2013). I'm pretty sure I deleted all the others. I avoided the camera for many years. So I put them side by side with my revision surgery (9/2019) and me at my current weight. It really opened my eyes though. And while I still might not be "skinny" I'm finally happy. It took awhile to get here. I didn't ever get down to my goal weight with VSG. I was more concerned with getting the weight off and keeping it off without regaining. And I would always either lose weight or maintain. Now that I know I can keep the weight off, I can finally focus on my goal weight. I'd be perfectly happy only losing another 20ish lbs. My goal was never to be super skinny but to be healthy and able to keep up with my son. To take him camping, hiking and fishing every summer like I did as a kid. Every time I see this picture at my largest I'm still shocked I was ever that size. HW: 326lbs CW: 192lbs

    Really need some help with protein

    Here's a picture the winning combo in my opinion. It saved me in the immediate OP period. I've never tried the chocolate one you showed.
