    Pain pain pain

Hi all I'm new! I had a gastric sleeve in November 2015 and then 18 months later this week had a revision to a bypass due to sickness and terrible reflux Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

5 months Sleeve to MGB post-op pic

That is amazing weight loss for a revision. Most people with revisions lose very slowly and barely anything. Congrats on all the hard work!
  3. Hi All Here's a brief update of my Sleeve to MGB progress. The before pic was taken in the hospital after my revision. I was 247 pounds then. The pic on the right was taken today. I weigh 187 pounds. I've lost 60 pounds since my surgery(02/10/17) and 66lbs since my pre-op diet. I think my weight loss is pretty good for a revision patient and I'm on track to finally reach my weight loss goal. I'm so happy that I got my sleeve revised!
  4. I need help with accountability and my struggle of eating.....I had a revision from sleeve to Bypass on May 30. In the past I have had 2 lap band surgeries....then lap band to sleeve in 2012....with not successful weight loss and recently the sleeve to by-pass. I have no issues with dumping......I ate a cookie to see how my body would react....nothing happened.....The only time I feel any type of discomfort is if I get too full...but it seems I can eat more than most folks who have had by-pass. I struggle with eating when I am not even hungry.......I have struggled with this issue for years which is one reason why my WLS have not been a success. I currently work out 5 days a week: both cardio and strength. I am 57 years old. The struggle is REAL for me.......I probably should seek some type of counseling because of my "need to eat" when I am not hungry... I feel do disappointed and discouraged that I will NEVER lose weight..... I have lost 20 lbs, but that was my initial weight loss right after my surgery....I have not lost or gained in over 4 weeks.....
  5. Hope everything goes well. I'm here for you. I had a RNY on 5/17/17. That's my only wls. However, I know alot of ppl who had or need revisions. Two whom I'm very close to. I share my wt loss info from my f/u appts. Also, we go to h2o aerobics and the gym.We go @our own pace I don't mind sharing and welcome you and anyone else to join me for aerobics, walks, trips to gym or just an ear to listen. Most important- Don't give up!
  6. I thought that weight loss surgery revisions are given due to problems with the first surgery, such as severe gerd (which sleeve patients tend to get and that's why they get it revised), slippage (gastric band) and or throat stricture issues (or something like that)? A few insurance companies believe when a procedure doesn't take it's due to the patient and not the procedure itself. That's why when we choose the surgery the first time, your primary physician usually guides you on what they think may be best based on your weight issues (at least that's what my doctor is doing). I hope you get approved. Don't give up. I'm not sure how many times you can appeal...but I'd appeal this as much as I can. Possibly get your doctor to do tests for Gerd issues or issues with the sleeve itself and not the weight issues and health. Those reasons were the reason you got the first surgery. Maybe going about it a different way may help. I know this is coming months after you posted, but I thought I'd reply just in case. :-)

    Revision... Aetna

O-town. My dr is making me do all the requirements as if it was the primary surgery. How do I avoid this? Should I call Aetna? Get a different dr? I need revision due to GERD.

    Acid Reflux still[emoji174]

To be honest I kind of wonder why your surgeon didn't revise you to bypass in the first place.
  9. No judgment from me! I have just had my 4th WLS as well! I was banded in 2004, had slippage and issues and it was removed in 2005....lost about 30 pounds. Decided to try again with the band about 2 years later. I seemed to have the same issues as you: too tight or if full of liquids my eating was somewhat restricted but could certainly get down junk food! Lost weight, gained weight...up and down over the years....In 2012 did a revision to the sleeve....Lost 30 pounds and that was ALL I ever lost..Even though I could eat very little.....(I have had to self-pay for all of my surgeries)....On May 30, 2017 I did a revision from the Sleeve to Bypass......Have lost only 20 lbs so far....my eating is somewhat restricted but I do have any "dumping issues" so sweets are not a problem even though I have restricted them. I ate a cookie to see how my body would react.....No issues here. So I have to be extremely disciplined with my eating, otherwise I will not lose weight. I eat about 900 calories a day and am exercising 5-6 days a week. I do have a food restriction on how much I can eat at a time and have eaten too much already and it came back up! But I thought my stomach was going to be the size of a walnut after this surgery but I can certainly eat more food than the size of a walnut! Will see how my weight loss journey goes over the next 12 months!!
  10. Well I never though I'd say this.........but I'm actually going in for my 4th WLS surgery / procedure this week [emoji15], I'm 3 days away from it on the 21st of July 2017 [emoji106][emoji4] My weight loss journey so far....back in 2004 I weighed 136kg / 300 pounds and am 182cm / 6ft. My GP in the UK wouldn't approve SAGB on the NHS so I self funded the operation at a hospital in the South of France. Operation went well, weight loss was good, got down to 90kg / 198 pounds. However, gradually I had more and more complications with the band, slippage and erosion. Weight went up to 116kg / 255 pounds. No matter how much fluids were put in or removed from my band, my restriction was either that tight I couldn't get water down or too loose so I could eat whatever I liked. I also developed reflux and experienced frequent vomiting. I had a revision from band to sleeve in the same operation in Australia 3 years ago (2014) got down to 84kg / 144 pounds with the sleeve. My sleeve stretched over a couple of years, partly due to the poor shape of the sleeve due to the damage done by the band (after my operation my surgeon said to me that my stomach was in such bad condition it looked looked "like a dogs breakfast in there!!") and if I'm honest partly due to me falling off the wagon, eating too much junk food and drinking a serious amount of alcohol, so my weight crept back up to 103kg / 227 pound. So anyway I finally stumped up the courage to go for the full gastric bypass 1 year ago at a weight of 103kg / 227 pound. Weight loss was great, felt full quickly, no major dumping, no complications / side effects. Got down to 80kg / 176 pound then recently crept back up to 93kg / 205 pound, so now I'm having the Overstitch this week, which I hope will be my final weight loss operation ever this Friday! In hindsight I wish I'd never had the band and sleeve and gone straight for the bypass all those years ago, but still grateful for the overall weight loss to date. I must have been quite lucky with the operations, I had no infections, significant pain or gas pain, I was waking around the ward on day of the bypass, got 1.5ltr of fluids down me same day and after the TT I was doing laps of the ward on day 2! Only real issue is I've become severely anaemic this week. I'm on iron tablets and Vit B12 injects. Now when I was in the mid-80kgs I had a fair bit of excess skin and I think the weight loss and the natural getting older process had made me look older than my years, so I went in for some plastic surgery to get my self sorted out. I had upper and lower blepharoplasty (reduction of loose skin above and below my eyes, liposuction to my neck, 2 separate neck lifts (first one unsatisfactory), liposuction to remaining man boobs, stomach, hips and back. Full abdominoplasty with new belly button. Oh and a complimentary mid-face lift whilst the surgeon was in doing my lower eyes, I actually didn't ask for the mid face lift but my surgeon couldn't resist doing it once he had perfect access to the areas / structures required to hitch up the face a little. I woke up to the unexpected news about the face lift and was thrilled with the results and even happier that is was for free!! I also had a fat transfer, where they sucked some fat out of my abdominal area and had it pumped in the jowls / cheeks / nasolabial folds to fill out my face a little!!! Now I just have a little Botox and some dermal fillers as maintenance to the face. Also had a vampire facelift lol. And OMG for those of you who have had full tummy tucks, as in skin and muscles, jeez how painful is the recovery from that bad boy!! Worst of all the WLS surgeries I've had and the other cosmetic procedure. You can't sit up, you can't laugh, sneeze, burp, fart, go for number 2's, well that was my experience with the TT recovery although I recovered very well form all of the procedures with no issues at all, thank-fully [emoji106] The Tummy Tuck for me is what makes me want to stay at around 80kg, any heavier and I feel the skin on my belly stretching because of the tightened skin. I gets quite uncomfortable so I have to get it oI don't want to ruin the effects of the surgery. All in all the procedure took 3 seperate operations they were 11 hours, 5 hours and 9 hours in duration. After the 11 hour operation I ended up in ICU on a cardiac monitor with a special one to one nurse as I was at risk of an adverse cardiac even due to excessive fluid loss. The three cosmetic operations cost me over $70k. Anyway, that's my story in its entirety, I thought I'd share this information with you as I have had so much done and gone through so many procedures, so please feel free to comment and ask me any questions. Thanks John [emoji4][emoji106] PS: No judgement please lol
  11. I am 3 weeks Post Band to Sleeve Revision, still having acid reflux and I'm taking double dose of Prilosec. In hospital, I had acid reflux so bad it caused an extra night, could barely get fluids down. It seemed to improve. I've been on regular foods a week, maybe that's the problem? I'm sitting up in bed at almost 3am due to this. My doctor mentioned if my Reflux continues he may have to revise to bypass (worst case scenario.) Any suggestions?
  12. Hi there!...had my "Band Sleeve" revision 10 days ago...I feel like I can return to work now....but I will be taking 2 weeks off .....my pain level on 1st 3 days was minimal (stayed in Hospital 3 days) I had an I.V and had pain meds I.V every 6 hrs..:)...once home my pain level has been maybe a 4/10... easily controlled with Tylenol....the pain will be over your throats and abdominal area (due intubation for O2 during surgery)....it took almost 7 days to get rid of my throat pain...now the pains is mostly over the incision areas (5 small incisions)...I HAVE MINIMAL PAIN TOLERANCE...and I can absolutely tell u it wasn't that bad!!!.... u will do great....good look!!!....:)
  13. I don't really post here anymore but saw your post and felt compelled to respond. I had NO reflux prior to my sleeve. At the time of my surgery I also had a hiatal hernia repair. 8 mos post sleeve I developed horrific reflux. So bad that the only option was to revise to RNY. Don't be afraid of RNY. I would never, ever, never have a sleeve if I was previously diagnosed with GERD

    Sleeve vs RNY

Just a thought. Everyone says that the SLEEVE is less invasive but what about them removing up tp 80% of your stomach. Yes the RNY does have its issues but you will hear of so many having to get the revisions done. For some reasons like GERD etc. I think that if it is medically needed to revise that is one thing but so many times on different sites you hear them say my SLEEVE or Lap Band didn't work for me I stopped losing weight. Or whatever. I also don't think anyone should go into a WLS with intentions of revision surgery later on. Now I know that I will catch back lash on this but...each to their own!! I hope everything goes great for everyone. Take care

    Sleeve vs RNY

I wish scare tactics would not be used here when discussiing RNY. It is a perfectly safe option. As I said I have had both now, mainly because my acid was so out of control, i needed to prevent more damage to my esophagus to prevent esophagal cancer possibly down the road. When he started my bypass, he discovered a damaged spot on my esophagus that most likely would have ruptured in the near future and I would have been in deep doo doo. Luckily I have the best surgeon in California and he knew what to do to repair it before he continued with the bypass. The recovery of this RNY is not one iota different than it was for my sleeve 5 1/2 years ago. The diets are the same, the incisions on your abdomen are the same. Of course the restriction is greater because the pouch is very small. I am not blaming anything on my sleeve. i had great success with it, however, had I realized it would not cure the bad acid reflux I already had, I would have chosen RNY at that time. Although I had about 75 pounds to lose, I did not have the surgery for weight loss. 2/3 of my stomach was over my diaphragm between my lungs headed for my heart. This was a result of a fundiplication surgery I had in 1999 to repair my stomach valve damaged by acid. Many on the gastric bypass board here have chosen to have a revision from sleeve to RNY because of their severe acid. NO ONE is saying that the sleeve caused the acid. If you have severe acid reflux before the sleeve, the RNY is definitely a better option for you so that can be taken care of as well. This will prevent further acid damage to the esophagus down the road, this lreventing Barrett's Esophagus or cancer. Some people just want opinions as to why others made their decisions. That does not mean one is the right way or the other is the right way. The doctor will make that decision based on the individual patient. Part of your intestine is NOT discarded with RNY. It is simply cut and attached to your new pouch. There is no difference than having 2/3 of your stomach cut off! Please do not use scare tactics or such negativity here. WLS is a big enough decision in the first place. Some people will have complications with any surgery. Any surgery is a risk. As I said, I myself have had no complications, no pain, or any nausea with my RNY. I have a great attitude when it comes to surgery. Never scared. That is part of the reason I recover so well with no issues. It will not do any good to scare people off here. They need to go into either of these surgeries with a positive attitude and be optimistic. We are here to help, not scare them to death. Enough of the negativity and statistics.

    August 2017 Sleevers

Just confirmed band to sleeve revision 8/15/2017 with Dr. Ariel Ortiz @ OCC in Tijuana Mexico. Not really nervous at all. The band surgery was a breeze for me and I have had one other surgery (non weight loss) with no complications. I seem to recover well from injury and surgery, so it doesn't scare me much. Banded 2/2009, had great success. Over 100 lbs lost, exceeded goal. Ran into trouble about a year ago with not being able to get the right adjustment and dealing with reflux. Decided the band has outlived it's life for me and I can't do it alone, so it's the sleeve for me.

    Do I start over? Again?

When I had my sleeve the Doctor also did a hernia repair and removed my diseased gallbladder. My hernia has come back but it is not causing me any pain. I am 34 pounds from my goal and had the 1st of 4 skin removal surgeries. I am hoping with this 1st skin removal surgery it will help me be able to exercise more so I can get to goal soon so I can have the 2nd skin removal surgery and the hernia could be repaired at that time. . However since I do have the hernia the thought has crossed my mind that if I can't get to goal I could try for a revised sleeve at the time of the second hernia repair. If your Doctor is going to be in there anyhow and the tests show your sleeve needs to be revised If it was me I would do it.

    NO Carbonated beverages- FOREVER!

I had a sleeve 5 1/2 years ago and just had revision to RNY. I stayed away from carbonation for about the first four years. Then I really wanted some diet Squirt. I did buy some and drank one every once in awhile with no problems. I think if you wait awhile like I did and use in moderation it would be OK. Now I am post op from RNY and will have to start my waiting game again!

    Does anyone still get "stuck"?

I used to throw up literally every time I ate. I would panicky if we weren't seated close enough to a bathroom at a resteraunt, because I knew I'd be in there 3 or 4 times. I hated eating with other people outside my immediate family. I'm only 21 days post op right now, but I know I had a pressure/pain feeling everyday in my chest for the last couple of years and now it's just gone. I had such severe scarring that it took 5 hours to do my revision surgery and was warned I may need the area where my band was dilated in a few months. However no pain in my chest and even though I'm just to mushy foods I haven't had that stuck feeling even once, and I used to get it with water sometimes. Band coming out was the best choice for me!

    Lap Band to Bypass Surgery

I'm having a revision surgery on 9/18 but I had my band removed in 2015. Sent from my SM-G900V using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. I had my lapband done in 2004. After continually getting aspiration pneumonia, my former surgeon in San Antonio took the fill out. I have regained 130 of my 150 lb loss due to being unfilled. Today, I saw a new surgeon in Austin (Dr. Ganta), and he scheduled me for lap band removal at the end of August. My insurance only covers revision to sleeve with being on a 6th month program for diet and exercise education. Of course, I have actually been studying those two topics for 40 years (I am 49) but that's what they require. I guess I don't practice what I learned. He will give me a sleeve in Jan 2018 after the ins requirement is met. It also gives me time for my pouch to undialte, which should give me better weight loss results during the first few months after sleeving. I'm concerned about "dieting" during those 6 months with no lapband at all. I know I can do it. I have changed my bad habits for as long as a couple of years, but like a junkie I also fall back to my old lazy sugar-snorting ways. I know my bad-itude will sabotage me even with the sleeve.
