What a week! I would like some feedback about my situation. Here it goes...When I first started this process the Bariatric Office said that they would be able to pull my records. Well, I find out yesterday they can't because doctor office is no longer a part of their affiliation. Needless to say I call my OB office to get weight records because I go there yearly. By the way, I requested these records in September and they only sent me results to HIV Test. I called them back then and they were suppose to mail my complete exams to Clinic. Needless to say they didn't. Well, I talk to the medical records lady today and tell her that I am coming to pick up the records because I need them ASAP. No Problem. Well, when I went to pick them up at 3 p.m. (I needed to pick up before 5 because she will be gone) and walked out of the office with the sealed envelope my natural instincts told me to open the envelope. Sure enough, this woman has put 1 record in for 2010 and has left for the day. Needless to say they knew I drove out of my way to get these records so the assistant on duty went to get my file and proceeded to copy everything from 2008. But wait, THERE IS NO RECORD FOR 2009! What the hockey sticks am I to do? So, I called my Family doctor's office to see about getting 2009 records. The lady told me it would take between 2-3 weeks. Mind you I only saw this doctor once in 2009 and was a new patient. Is it that hard to pull 1 record that should still be in my chart seeing as how I don't go but 1 time a year? Ughh, the lady in my OB office senses my frustration and copies records back from 2006. THE BIG QUESTION IS DO YOU THINK I SHOULD HAVE HER SUBMIT FOR INSURANCE AUTHORIZATION TOMORROW WITH HEALTH RECORDS FROM 2006-2008 AND 2010 AND 1 FROM THIS YEAR? I would still get 2009 records just in case we need them. For your information I have AETNA.

Hello all, my name is Gloria and I just had my first consult for Lap Band surgery yesterday! I've been researching (and saving) for this procedure for as long as I could remember. A little bit about me, I'm 28 single with no children. I'm in school full time attempting to obtain a nursing degree. I also work full time as a receptionist. I've been over weight my entire adult life and I only have myself to blame. I tried many fad diets with no success and I tried the "hard way" diet and exercise when I was in my early 20's and did have minor results only to gain it all back (and then some) after going through a job loss and depression. At present day, I'm at the heaviest I've EVER been (5'0 250lbs) and can't seem to lose more than 10 pounds and keep it off! I haven't had a full panel blood work done in over 5 years so I don't know if I have any underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or hypothyroidism. My blood pressure fluctuates but usually is borderline. I recently became insured through Aetna but unfortunately my policy excludes all bariatric surgery, just my luck! Apparently the company I work for didn't purchase the plan but the center I went to found a small loophole, sort of; Hiatal hernia. I'm now scheduled for an EGD on October 1st and per True Results, if they find I have a hiatal hernia, the total cost of the surgery gets discounted about $4000! I know it sounds horrible but I really hope I have one! I had an EKG, PFT, physical exam and lab work done yesterday and aside from the upcoming egd I was told I could have surgery as soon as the 4th. It all seems to be moving so fast, I'm VERY excited but a bit apprehensive. I've never been put under and I'll have that first experience with the egd. I'm also curious about other pre-op clearances I was told I needed by one doctors office weren't brought up yesterday, mainly a psych evaluation and sleep apnea study. Are these not needed for "cash patients"? When it comes time for surgery, how many days should I request off from work, just a receptionist here. I'll have to keep in mind I'm in school too and will have to make arrangements there too because of stairs. Any advice from those who've recently had it done. Pain felt when you wake up on a scale from 1-10? I appreciate ANY feedback, comments, questions or concerns. Anyone else from Houston, please add me or keep in touch!

http://blog.wellesse.com/blog/-not-set--2/what-is-protein-and-what-types-of-protein-are-best This article and many more say collagen can be more bioavailable? If there are more than two schools of thought about collagen then I am going to try to investigate the claim that it isn't as available. Where did you get your info from? I want a more scientific break down before I can decide if I should use it because it is less expensive and in some products I like for example Bariatric Hot drinks, Soups, etc. Thanks for bring this to our attention I would have never known to research it!

New here...what now?
woo woo replied to capricornsleever's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can also contact a bariatric surgeon's office directly rather than go through your PCP. Google bariatric surgery in your area, read up on the available programs and call and make an appointment. They will guide you from there. Also, read, read, read as much as you can!! Good luck :) -
Before I was banded 4 months ago, I used to have ferocious reflux and heartburn. I was diagnosed with a para-esophogael hiatus hernia, which my surgeon repaired for me laparoscopically at the time of my lap band surgery. WHAT A RELIEF! I mention this as hiatus hernias are very common in obese people. My surgeon said that a high percentage of patients come into bariatric surgery not even aware they have one (but have been living with the reflex for weeks or even years). So my question - did you have reflux before? Each time I get a band adjustment ("fill") I am asked by the nurse whether I have reflux or heartburn. This is, apparently, an indicator that the band may be too tight. (Thankfully my answer is a consistent "no" - I have been feeling terrific since my surgery, lucky me). I tell you this because this is how YOU should be feeling, too!. So perhaps this is what has happened for you - that your band was placed and filled with too much Fluid at the get-go? Here's what I've learned - that when the band is placed, there is only a small amount of fluid put in it. This is so a) Your swollen oesophagus which is traumatized from the surgery can recover, and so you WON'T get reflux. At this stage you are on liquids, which should pass through the band quite easily. If even liquids are causing you to vomit, I think that band is just too tight, you poor thing! On the day of my surgery, my band was filled to 4.1 ccs. I have gradual fills of .3ccs over the past few months that have brought me up to where I am now - 5.2ccs. It might be a good idea to ask your surgeon what your band is filled at currently. I agree with JustWatchMe" - your reflux and vomiting is not normal. I strongly recommend you address this immediately with your surgeon. *Note - I am a newbie here with no medical background, so I'm just speaking from my own experience and what I've learned over the 2 years I spent researching prior to being banded 4 months ago! You have invested this money in yourself, and have gone through so much to get you to the surgery and into the phase you are in. Congratulations! You deserve to ENJOY it, though, not be suffering. Hopefully this is just a hiccup for you, and that with a band adjustment (de-fill) perhaps you will feel relief, and get on the road - the PROPER road, to recovery. Rooting for you and wishing you the best! Do keep us all posted.

Sugar intake?
anaxila replied to harriskristen1586's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It was several months after surgery before I tried any fruits, and I have tolerated them well. But just because it's a banana and not a Twinkie doesn't mean it won't make you sick or won't make you dump, so tread lightly here. I don't have a goal for grams-of-sugar-per-day, but I do have a limit of 10g per serving of anything. And that's a regular serving, not a bariatric serving, because it's mostly about the proportion of sugar-to-other-macros that I care about. So bananas are mostly out (except for occasional post-run recovery) and strawberries and other berries are in. There are simple and complex sugars and different kinds of sugar (e.g., lactose, fructose, glucose, maltose, sucrose, galactose), and so there's a continuum of badness that has lactose on one end and Twinkies on the other. My nutrition said that lactose was so far on the side of goodness that I shouldn't worry about limiting it, which seems to be common advice. But basically everything else is still a potential danger spot for your RNY-shortened digestive tract, so please be careful with the fruits and sweeteners until you know how they affect you. -
Did anyone do their Psych Eval and Nutrician Appt BEFORE attending the seminar?
LindaS replied to AllForMy4's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'd hold off on the psych eval. One of the things I had to explain was the surgery I planned on getting and why. I learned a lot of this at the initial meeting. It gives you an overview of all of the options. Although when I went, I didn't realize there was a sleeve. Still, I recommend waiting on the psych eval. You want to make sure your evaluation covers what it needs to, and your bariatric surgeon's office is qualified to make sure it does. They usually recommend a psychologist to use as well. -
It was easier for me to decide. i was 47 years old. I'd had plenty of experience losing and regaining weight. I'd lost as much as 120 lbs in a health kick at 45 years old.....only to regain after an injury and surgical repair that kept me outa the gym for a while. I healed but turned that "while" into way too long. Anyway.....a bulging disc at T-12 knocked me on my arse. Outa work for an extended period trying to heal it and avoid surgery. Back surgeon suggested bariatric surgery and that losing a significant amount of weight would allow my back to heal itself. Suffice to say that pain is a powerful motivator. That back injury was the most painful thing I've ever experienced....and that includes knee surgeries, broken bones and two prior hernia repairs......those back spasms were a beyotch. Within a month of having my VSG my back started to heal. At five months I was taking vacations and having an absolute blast. Live was good again........and has been ever since. Weight is coming off nicely. I can eat anything I choose to eat, just choosing weight loss friendly foods now. I can eat smallish to normal sized portions at meals. Nobody I'd meet today would ever know I'd had wls if they didn't see older pictures. Nothing in my daily life would reveal this. Living like a normal person......eating normal foods......normal portions. What, exactly, is your fear ?????????????????? A better life awaits you. Get lean. Enjoy the results. Gotta run. 14 hour shift awaits me.....and I have tons of energy to burn. Will even hit the gym during lunch break. VSG life is good !!!! Edit: VSG life is GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How did you decide on a surgeon?
kmmschaefer posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
How did you decide on a surgeon in Mexico? I went to the site to verify certifications and a lot of doctors I see reviews on and whose website says they are board certified are not even on the list of Mexican board certified surgeons. Only one of my top 3 were actually board certified in bariatric surgery. There are 88 bariatric board certified surgeons in Mexico and I only recognized maybe 4 names on that list from reading reviews and watching youtube. So I was curious what made you choose the surgeon you chose? I am still undecided but have strong contender. -
On a mission to find the best cook book for WLS!
mom2lucky (suznc) replied to lovealways's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I recommend checking out two of my favorite blogs - the world according to eggface & bariatric foodie. Both gals had rny & are several years out & have good recipes & lots of helpful info. I bought two or three books with with bariatric recipes but they don't really fit my lifestyle (I'm not a gourmet chef - lol). Most recipes I've tried & liked came from the above blogs or Pinterest. -
I don't think anyone here that is seriously wanting to lose weight has the mindset that "just one is okay", whether that is about food, alcohol, drugs, or whatever vice one may have. With that being said, the vast majority of those having bariatric surgery had to jump through several hoops for insurance to approve them. One of those hoops were a psychological evaluation. I won't get into the medical criteria for alcohol addiction, but I think @@Roxie Malone can tell the difference between having a social drink vs drinking alcohol everyday because one cannot stop. Lastly, no one will be 100% perfect with their diet. It's not possible. Can you honestly say that you will never eat a piece of pizza ever again? I know I can't and I won't. The key is moderation.

At over four months, found out I was taking my supplements all wrong...
purz59 replied to VDB's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I also will be taking my 3 antidepressants in addition to my bariatric medications. I hope I'm able to d/c the cholesterol meds and Metformin. I'm really concerned how in the world will I get all these meds in? -
Not sure about the mercury aspects. I should look into this. Same with cholesterol from eggs and such. Keep in mind that once you have your sleeve you're not really eating high volumes of protein.....just high percentage of your intake is protein. In other words.......consider a normal meal from your former life. Imagine it. Think about what the plate looked like when it was loaded down at your normal meals. Got an image in mind ? Good. Now, remove the side items from the plate. Zero in on the entree. Got it? Good. Now zero in on that entrees and then shrink it down to 1/4 cup in size.....or 1/2 cup or whatever size meal your phase has you eating at meals. Now....you'll see that you may actually be eating LESS protein than you were before....and none of the other stuff. No side dishes....no salads.....no desserts. You'll only have room for some of the protein rich entree. With this in mind, you can still cook the same meals for your family....but you select from just part of it for your own needs. Supplement the gaps with bariatric multivitamins, calcium, Iron and B-12. Stay hydrated. Get lean. It's simple......as long as you let it be simple. Stay away from foods that don't fit your new goals.....and even their substitutes. Stick with the basics and work through the various phases. Very good points. You illistrated that beautifully.I have only been eating a 3 to 4 oz portion of meat and a green veggie (usually broccoli, green Beans or brussel sprouts) on the side for 4 months now and I am a month away from having my surgery so it shouldn't be too much of ashock to my system. Thanks Dub for all the encouragement!

Constantly feeling cold
vcor91983 replied to Beana21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I spoke with the nurse at my bariatric surgeons office and she said it's completely normal and I would most likely feel cold all the time, which is a plus in the summer -

Whats Better Sleeve Or Ru En Y?
Butterthebean replied to got2bthin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
30 sleeves does sound like not alot of experience. Are you limited to just that Doctor? Couldn't you seek out a second opinion from another bariatric surgeon? It can't hurt anything. As far as the hair loss, I'm not sure what you meant, but I believe there is a likelihood of hair loss with either surgery. But if you eat healthy, you can at least minimize the odds of losing any hair. Good luck either way with your decision. -
I've attended orientations through Pacific Bariatric, Sharp memorial bariatric and UCSD. During my consultation next week, I'm sure they will assist with my decision between lap band or the sleeve. I just want what will work for me and gives me the greates success in weight loss. Thanks all that commented. I appreciate your support and advice.

Anyone chose self pay due to impatience with ins?
AMVV12 replied to fits_like_a_sleeve's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 100% self pay because my husbands insurance does not cover ANY bariatric services. Although we are having to take a loan out, I can book my surgery in 2 weeks! I am going to Mexico and couldn't be happier with my decision. Financially, it will be a struggle but my health will only deteriorate the longer I have to wait. Best wishes to you! -
Hi All! Finally have a surgery date for 11/25, the day after Thanksgiving! I know I am prepared for this new journey! I have really been getting my mind and body prepared as best that I could. For anyone who went through the process or are going through the process, any advice? Anything to buy before hand? Bring to the hospital? Do in the weeks after? Thank you all so much! Also anybody have a date close to mine or the same date? Anyone in Boston who has been through the process?? I would love to meet other bariatric patients in the area. When did you start your 6 month plan and when did it all get submitted to insurance? Insurance has denied me because they say there isn't 6 months of a documented weight loss plan. I went to my PCP in October of last year. She weighed me and we talked about diet/exercise along with getting my referral to a bariatric center in our area. I started going to them in November and have not missed a month. So, March should have been month 6, correct? I'm not sure if they just aren't counting the PCP one or if they count their months differently (October-November, November-December, December-January, January-February, February-March would only be 5?). If anyone has had this situation and had it resolved, I would love to hear from you! Although I will know the answer in a few days I can't help but ask!

I thought it was just me. Ever since surgery I awake each morning with a headache. My surgeon blames my Fibromyalgia. My Fibromyalgia doctor says she doesn't know what's causing the headaches. I found a new study published online in the journal Neurology® that suggests bariatric surgery may be a risk factor for a specific condition that is known to trigger severe headache. Researchers found that the surgical procedures were sometimes associated with later developing a condition called spontaneous intracranial hypotension. The condition is often caused by a leak of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) out of the spinal canal, lowering spinal fluid pressure and triggering sudden headaches with accompanying nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, and difficulty concentrating. The study goes onto report that it is known that body weight plays an important role in CSF pressure. Spontaneous intracranial hypotension is typically associated with a tall and lanky build, while obesity is a risk factor for intracranial hypertension, or high CSF pressure. The authors hypothesize that the loss of fat tissue may uncover a susceptibility to spontaneous intracranial hypotension. Click here to learn more

State by State Lap-Band Surgery appeal rights link
RfishN replied to gviscio's topic in Insurance & Financing
I work at a hospital and have Gilsbar. I am told that Bariatric surgery is "excluded". Is there anyway around it. I meet all other criteria. My insurance will pay for all the results caused by being overweight but not help me fix the root problem. Do I have any chance of coverage? It's funny, but I have learned that a lot of school teachers are covered because their employers want to keep them healthy and working a long time. Why is that focus not also in the hospital setting, where I work? Please let me know if I should pursue coverage or just pay out of pocket. I need the surgery for my health.:confused2: -

I have tried twice and have been declined - any ideas ??? My sister has had it twice - I can't get it once  Sher/Ohio :crying: -

I f your insurance has an exclusion...I don't think there is anyway you can get them to pay for it. Your bariatric doctors office may have a suggestion, but paying out of pocket is probably going to be your only choice.
