Pre-op all protein shake diet 2 weeks
Bypassgirl92 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone I am currently 26 years old and I am due to have gastric bypass surgery on Tuesday December 18th. I have been told by my nutritionist to go on a two-week pre-operation diet only consisting of Medi fast protein shakes. I was very strict on the diet until tonight I completely broke down and had a 12 inch italian bread with scrambled eggs in it. I feel completely guilty. But I was starving due to the fact that I have not had any solid foods since December 4th. I was feeling really emotional/irritable and overall starving. I started my weight-loss Journey at 304lbs. Today I weigh 290. During my 6 months of nutritional monitoring I was not exactly doing my best I did not lose much weight because I was not consistent .But just on the shake diet that I have been on I have lost a total weight of 7 pounds. I feel so quilty like I ruined my whole diet. I know the whole point of this is to shrink our liver size which mine was 19cm which is over the normal by like 3cm from what I have read. Have any of you screwed up like this before? And do you think me being very strict for the remainder of the 5 days will do me any good after I cheated horribly tonight 😟 -
Hi im Becca, Ive been just loving these forums. They are so informative, i just read and read and read and read...lol. I am having my surgery next month. I have about 80 pounds to lost to be at my goal. I am super excited and feel i have done so much research i am as prepared as i can be i guess. Is there anyone out there that has reached goal with a bmi smiliar to mine and how long has it taken you? Is it true that low bmi'rs have a much harder time losing. I would love to see some before and after pics...they are soooo exciting and motivating for me! Thanks everybody:biggrin:

Confused. (Thinking to back out)
sleevinpops replied to nb660's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nb, you need to ignore the "noise" and do what you feel is best for you. I know I had a few "friends" and even family that said the same, trying to discourage me. I respond back noting that I have struggled with my weight for over 20 years. Have tried all sorts of diets only to gain it all back and even more. Not to mention high blood pressure, cholesterol, Apnia and (what finally put me over the edge) borderline diabetes. Maybe they would prefer to have me continue to have declining health (better check my insurance policy...LOL) I have tried so many times to loose and keep it off, but have not been successful. Surgery is another too that has a high success rate for weight loss, but I also realize I need to change my relationship with food. If you see so many other posts about those that have already done it, it is true that many have discomfort initially, maybe even for a couple months...but over time most still say they wish they did it sooner. Good luck with with YOUR decision, I know it is a difficult decision, but it is YOURS to make. We are here to support. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
Today my wife weighed in at 199 lbs for the first time in about 25 years. This makes her weight loss at 85 lbs since her banding in Dec. 2008. Along with this is my weight loss of 75 lbs giving us both a second chance for a healthier & longer life. We both have a way to go but together we will do it.

It has been 9.5 months since I had my band removed. I have gained 4 lbs back in that time. Each day is getting harder and harder for me so today I joined weight watchers. I need the accountability of weighing in every week with a real live person, it seems to motivate me and keep me on track. It is only 12.00 a week and to me that is minimal if I can lose a lb here and there or maintain this weght loss I had from my band. It is actually a good program and I know of several who are having great success with it. This is one program I never tried in the past ( tried every other diet) I feel doing WW with 90% of the weight lost with my band I can get to my goal weight of 150. with out my band Had I done only WW to lose all of my weight I know I would of quit since I had over 100 lbs to lose, but since I only have 28 to get to my 150 goal I feel very possitive I can do it with the help of WW. Iam allowed 24 points a day, so far today I have eaten 3 egg whites and 1 piece of dry wheat toast to equal 3 points. for a snack I ate a bananna to equal 2 points I have 19 points left for the rest of the day, point tracking is easy, I always thought it would be a pain in the butt , I was wrong Wish me luck

Come in Bandster with Hypertension :)
justicenyce replied to justicenyce's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
EricLyn your numbers are really similar to mine. The only reason I am pursuing this surgery is to get off metformin and the 2 highblood pressure medicines im on right now. I am confident that with weight loss my numbers will improve ...Good luck everybody:smile2: -
Not drinking enough shakes?
Tamihott replied to *slim*'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Slim, I actually had this problem too. I found myself consumed with when and how I was going to be able to drink all the protein shakes. I called up my nutrionist and she said the goal was to shrink the liver, not weight loss. It is true that protein is supposed to help curb hunger, but as long as I was not hungry I could drink what I could. I hope that makes sense. It seemed to calm me right down. Good luck! I am still on the darn thing since my surgery date had to be moved. I was allowed to eat regualar food yesterday and today and let me tell you it was not great. My body is not used to all the crappy food and I am paying for it. Can't wait to get on the pre-op diet again tomorrow! Good luck all Tamara -
Needing Reassuring
toasty replied to jocelyndavisss's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@jocelyndavisss There's no doubt about it, I sympathize that it is going to be a struggle. People in their late teens to early 20's generally eat lots of things that at this point you can't or shouldn't, and they eat it in quantities that you probably never will again (or hopefully not). I know this is easier said than done, but you are going to have to learn to eat differently than the people around you. You will probably not be able to avoid the situations where people are eating things you shouldn't. At three weeks post surgery (and in the pureed stage), you are pretty limited in going to restaurants. Even Soups need to be regarded carefully, since they often have things (like chips or clams or potatoes, etc.) that you shouldn't have at this point. Later, when in the regular foods stage, going out to restaurants will be easier. As @@dhrguru said, analyze the menu at places you go out to and see if there are alternatives that work for you, or share a plate with someone else (since the amount you will be able to eat will be so small). You will always have to be careful of fried foods, Desserts, carb heavy stuff (like mac-n-cheese, Pasta, pizza crust, hamburgers, etc.), and so on. Protein will be king, and you will want to eat it first before anything else, followed by fruits and vegetables, and finally if room left carbs. Yeah, I know, totally different from what your friends are eating, and probably makes you feel upset, left out, deprived. I get it. Unfortunately, with the path you have chosen (which is a great path, and a wonderful decision for your health and for how you will feel I am sure) you will eat differently from them. But maybe you can also be an inspiration to some of them to eat more healthy too! Just focus on how good you will feel when you can wear fashionable clothes, do outdoor activities with friends, and not worry about people judging you because of your weight. And congratulations on your weight loss so far. That's excellent! I'm sure you are proud of yourself, and you should be! Good luck, and my positive thoughts go out to you. You can do it! -
Paula... What is it that you are eating in a day? Do you follow the bandster rules? Like eating your Proteins first (hard proteins)? Do you drink liquid calories? DO you drink enough Water in a day? All of these things make a huge difference. Do you eat junk food? Are you getting in enough calories? What about exercise...if you can answer to yourself honestly that you are doing all the things a bandster should be doing and still are not losing weight then maybe you do need another fill, but if your answer is NO then I would definately wait on the fill and just take a look at what you are doing and see if you can make some changes as simple as adding more water & exercise to your diet.. When the body goes into starvation mode you will not lose..so if you are not consuming enough calories, that could be your problem...Starving yourself is not the answer.I'm not going to tell you to not get on the scale everyday but For me NOT getting on the scale everyday is the only thing that helps me from obsessing about my wieght loss and helped me get back on a losing trend..when I used to get on the scale everyday and did not see a loss I would get so frustrated and discouraged..all I wanted to do was eat becasue I was not losing anyways...but since then for me only weighing once a week..the last 9 weeks in a row have been a 1-3 pound loss & I'm lovin' it! Good Luck to you, I hope things get better for you Hang in there, no one ever said this was going to be easy

Great post Rootman, and well, what a fantastic year you've had. 2011 for me was a double sided sword... a roller coaster ride for sure; both in the world of weight loss and on a more personal level. My highlights are: I turned 40 in April.... that was an ouch moment ... lol I am lighter now than I have been in 15 - or so - years I am fitter now than I have been for 17+ years; I can run for 50 mins on the treadmill and keep up at the boxing gym with the lightest! I don't feel 'out of place' in the world of exercise I am feeling more confident and although I have a little way to go, I can, at last, see the finishing line I feel more secure in being 'me'! And... I can now take a compliment by just responding with a 'thank you' instead of putting myself down. Phew... what a year ... bring on 2012!
-
Most of 2011 was a total loss for me. I was sort of in a funk with everything. I didn't do anything most of the year. I mean nothing. I started a highly stressful job back in december 2010 which has sucked the life out of me but I couldn't find a new one even though I have really tried. I gained 20lbs this year (up until December when I had VSG) putting me back to my all time high of 320. The highlight of my year has been the entire VSG process which happened very recently. The thrill of finding out that my newly changed work insurance covered it, to the thrill of finding a surgeon, getting my date, and then finally having the surgery. I did all of this by myself. And I'm very proud that I was able to accomplish this. I had been dealing with WLS exclusions in insurance or no insurance for the last 10 years. Then out of nowhere the new insurance change at my job in the fall, allowed WLS. I think 2012 will be my year for sure!

I'd do it again for sure. And again. And again. The results were more than I could have hoped for, and it was the icing on the cake of my weight loss. That said, I had a great surgeon, nearly no complications and no keloid scarring, so in that respect, I could not have had a better experience.

If you are asking for advice...
chris1142 replied to gowalking's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thank you vets! Because I read this site obsessively for several months before my surgery I knew from the get go what to do to be successful for me and I have sucked it up and done that for the 5 months I have been sleeved. Without the wise words of the terrific vets on the forum I just might of tried doing this my way rather than my surgeons way and that most likely would have gotten me where it's always gotten me--to another failed attempt at weight loss. So I big Thank You to all the vets for telling what works for them. -
HI; Some husbands feel threatened when their loved one starts to loose weight. They feel very secure with the "plump" us, then when we start to loose and develope a figure, they feel er may have other attention. This they can't handle. Also, it is a form of emotional abuse to not compliment or pay attention to a weight loss. Sort of like a power trip. Whatever, try not to let is matter. Give yourself a hug, use us as your source of encouragement and leave DH hangups to him. Doddie

Battle of the Buldge, versus battle of the brain...
general_antiope commented on Boo Boo Kitty's blog entry in Boo Boo Kitty's Journal
Ah i'm having the same issue with body dysmorphia. I swear to god when I pull out the size 14 jeans there is just NO way my belly will let that snap! no way in h....hey wait it fits. Weird. I feel like I live in an MC Escher world  When i got banded, I left my ex husband, I lost almost all of my friends (couple friends of course), he began to immediately date one of our friends...I was very much alone. I decided I was on a journey and to HELL with him. I legally changed my name to Kate Eryn - kept his last name....to HELL with him...its mine now...lol...and changed my career. I also have a great personality and I felt free to just - figure it out. I did stuff I'll never do again (namely...some ... gentlemen...) and eat things I'll never eat again (namely...apple cider vinegar shots and half cooked broccoli) and spent way too much on salon hair for over a year. I'm settling down now, and I think the real me is emerging. I just honor it as a process. One day, I will not be so conscious of my belly. I hope that happens after PS. lol. One day, I will not think I'm beautiful in the mirror and ugly in any picture, but beautiful both places. I figure it took a long time to form this way; it's gonna be a while to come out of the rafters of loving and accepting myself. And girl, you are effing STUNNING up top there! That's exactly the kind of end result I'm going for. Keepin the boobs. Keeping the boobs, the ex husband's last name, and dropping the rest of it -
Battle of the Buldge, versus battle of the brain...
Boo Boo Kitty posted a blog entry in Boo Boo Kitty's Journal
Well I have successfully taken off 162 pounds now, and I thought that was the hard part. That unfortunately has been far from true.I am more terrified now of my weight than I ever have been. Food and exercise controls my thoughts, my sleeping moments (which have become rare) and my waking moments. Why is the battle of the brain in weight loss harder than the battle of the buldge? No matter what anyone says to me, I see the old me. The lady with the "good personality" that everyone liked and no one respected. I was fat and disgusting....I am coming to the point where I feel no different now. Why has my head not changed with my body? It seems the battle with weight, no matter where you are at is never an easy one. Loosing weight challenges your body, but sometimes leaves your mind in the aftermath. I am not connected to who I am, I stay connected to who I once was, and it is a very lonely place to be. I wish I could see me, but I don’t. I don’t know who I see anymore. -
GERD!!! I will never forget waking up at 2am, unable to breath because of this burning sensation in my throat!! After my surgery, I was told to take omeprazole every morning for at least 2-3 months after my surgery to prevent heartburn. I have to say that I have not had heartburn or this awful experience that wakes me up at night since my surgery 3/2. It will get better. As for the weight loss... Ugh!! I too get stuck and not loose much. I was at 2 weeks without loosing 1 lb and suddenly I lost 4. I guess I just have to be patient and remember that I will get to my weight goal !!

Scheduled for April 20th and scared!
laurenlee replied to karakent's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Welcome Kara I don't blame you for being scared. I was, too. I am 15 days post op and am doing great. I know how daunting it is to think that you aren't going to eat any food for awhile. It's amazing that we can muster up the will power to do that. I wondered, if we have enough will power to do that, why do we need surgery to lose weight? I actually asked that question at a pre-op seminar and the Dr said "I couldn't have PAID you to come here and ask that - that is the BEST question anyone has EVER asked" and the answer is.....(drumroll) ..... we have the will power - we've lost weight on restricted diets before - we can do this - BUT - we cannot sustain that kind of will power for a lifetime. that is what the band will help you do. TIPS FOR MAKING IT THROUGH: Protein drinks will save your life. Some of the better ones are: Atkins, EAS Advantage, Muscle Milk. Drink one of those and you are not hungry for awhile. Truly not hungry. It's amazing. And SO healthy. My nails are growing, my hair is thicker. It's just great. They are about 1.75 each (4 pack for $6.50) better prices at costco, watch for sales etc). sugar free Jell-O is fun to eat but it won't do anything to help you if you are hungry. Sugar free popsicles - same thing. I admit, I haven't had dinner with my family in a month (my requirements were 14 days pre op and 14 days post op). That was hard. We didn't go out during that time if it involved a meal as so much of our social lives are wrapped around food. but, that's ok. it isn't for very long. If you are in the right mindset, and if you've come this far, you must be, you can go a bit farther and do this. Feel free to email me anytime. And good luck!! -
My eval doctor ask me what's the worse thing about lapband surgery. The answer is death during surgery and complications. He asked me if I had tried other weight loss diets. He also wanted me to explain the surgery technique on how they install the band and where do I think its located. Try and use Youtube for lapband procedures for more information. It was 2 hours long and I got thre 15 minutes early and a 75 questionaire needed to be filled out prior to exam. Best wishes

So recently I've been pretty hard on myself. My weight loss has been very slow over the last few months (mainly because I don't have much restriction and I'm not doing enough exercise). I live and work in Seoul, South Korea and Koreans don't really recognise changes even if those changes are pretty drastic. So I haven't had many people compliment me. That was up until this week that is. This week I've had seven different people compliment me about my weight loss. Saying I look so slim and asking how I've done it. It's such a great feeling and has really motivated me to keep going until my goal. In addition to this I've met and fallen for a great man. It's early days but I never though I would meet someone like him. He's very special and we have so much fun when we are together. He makes me smile a lot. Before my surgery I always dreamed of meeting a man like him. It also helps that he's really healthy and fit so we get out and do active stuff at the weekend like mountain climbing, hiking and biking. He also cooks me amazing, healthy meals (and I secretly think he loves it that I give him half my food!). I'd say that this is my biggest NSV! Life is good and I'm happy. Here I am at 215lbs on the right. And down to 160!

IneedMajorHelp replied to Cherrybomb's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'll probably have to have mine out - had an attack friday night - hurt like hell - called the doc and described it, he said that it happens with rapid weight loss sometimes and he said to get the ER - they did the ultrasound and gallbladder is full of stones and I probably passed one - thank goodness for demerol! -
Gone from size 24 to 16 and no one seems to notice? What about you?
want2clessofme replied to Johanna1955's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I agree with TES ... I don't usually comment on someone's weight - either way. I would say something like "you are looking good!" (if I noticed weight loss) and "so nice to see you!" (if they hadn't). I think I would rather have someone say that - than to question me about weight loss in the grocery store Personally, I have dropped from a size 20 pants to a 16 (some 14's) and even my parents haven't noticed! Neither have my grandchildren - which is way cool to me! They love me no matter what
