Well, I got denied by my insurance provider today. I need 6 months of physician supervised weight loss, nutritionist consultation, and psych eval. I feel like 6 months is an eternity. How do I get through it?

Very good loss, Terri. If you're losing, why did he do a fill?? Usually the criteria is if you ARE NOT losing.. hmm.. Shoulder pain after a fill is something I'm not sure I've ever experienced or heard of, but with that aggressive a fill, who knows? I'd certainly let him know if it doesn't subside pretty quickly.

What has worked for me is to weigh and measure everything I eat (I have done this from the moment I was able to eat solids). I normally have 3-4 oz Protein and 1/2 cup veggies for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is either eggbeaters with 2% cheese and turkey sausage, greek yogurt or oatmeal. If you feel like you need a snack keep them protein-based like string cheese, greek yogurt, deli slices, etc. I find it helpful to track my food using an app on my Iphone (myfitnesspal) but at a minimum I would track your protein intake and calories...you want to make sure you are getting enough protein because that will help you feel full longer and will also help keep your energy up (my nutritionist recommends a higher amount that most people are told...80-120 g per day) and you want to make sure you are eating enough calories because too few calories can stall your weight loss. For me, the first several weeks of solids was about figuring out how my band works best for me. I initially stopped losing weight until I bumped my calories up to over 1,000 per day and after some trial and error I have figured out the calorie range that gives me the best weight loss. I also chose to limit carbs to under 40g per day because I have found that works best for me...again, that is my personal decision. Don't be afraid to play around with things for a while...I know the goal is to lose weight but if you can figure out how to best work your band, you will be successful...

From the Peak of Despair to Tiny Underwear

Congratulations on your successes, especially your weight loss. May you continue to be blessed and share those blessings with those less fortunate that you work with. -
The weigh in and if you want a great recipe let me know Well weigh in not so bad, have lost 6 lbs. Doc is ok with that, says I am in the recovery stage not weight loss stage. Whatever that means and says a pound a week is acceptable. It may be acceptable but I need more than that with an all liquid diet. I told him about the cheats and he said I still have stitches inside and should not do it. And just for that I am on liquids for another 3 weeks. Ok not just for that, but he wants to make sure I am healed completely so nothing thicker than tomato paste. I have been putting everything in the smoothie maker anyway. If anyone likes Chili's Southwestern Veg Soup, I have come up with a simple homemade version that has 220 calories per 8 oz serving and would be happy to share the recipe. I have found it quite refreshing over canned broths. Just let me know if there is interest and I will post it the next time I am on. I will go for my first fill on Oct 21. Then the second one will be 1 month later. After that, I call him when I have plateued and am not losing weight. He says I have to take control of this. Thanks for all of the encouragement and support you all have offered and I love to hear your stories and follow up with you. Chin up we can do this together:thumbup: D'Ann

My journey has been long with lots of hairpin turns....
heather5565 replied to moltoguy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Holy fadoodle!! Yeah, I'd say you've jumped over some extra hurdles!!! Too bad you and doc didn't discuss getting a sleeve if that's what he felt was best when he was in the OR... but now that you're all healed up and no permanent liver damage - this is great news! Maybe look at it as: In the grand scheme of things... a few month delay is nothing (?) Now you know that you have to have your liver enzymes watched too. But with weight loss and getting healthy that should also keep your liver issues under control as well. When my doc came and talked to me post op he told me a had a bit of a fatty liver... I was mortified but he said that with weight loss it will fix that. Whew Anyways, good luck and three times a charm!!!! -
Hi, I'm Cassidy, Cass for short. I'm 30, I had rny gastric bypass in Dec 2014. I started out with a bmi of 53.1 and a weight of 339 I'm 5 feet 7inch. I've always had trouble with my weight. At 16 I started to balloon up and it never stopped. I've tried diet after diet, eating right, working out. Was never able to lose more then 20 pounds. I had thought about weight loss surgery years ago but I didn't have insurance and thought about going to Mexico for it but couldn't afford it with being a one income family. Finally got insurance that would cover it and I went for it. I knew it was something that I wanted to do. I jumped through ton of hoops to get everything done for my insurance to wait for them to approve me. I'm lucky I got approved fast and had surgery within a few weeks from it. I had surgery just days before my birthday. It was my birthday gift to my self.. Anyway to say I'm glad I did it is a Understatement. I've lost 86 pounds, I've dropped my bmi down to a class two..any ways thanks for reading.. Glad to be here. I'll included s before and a after

Hi all. I had my sleeve surgery on 8/13. I've had no real complications (minus constipation). I did hit a major stall (17 days) about 10 days post op. Since then I've lost about another 4lbs, making for a total of 23lbs lost in 5 1/2 weeks. I'm stalled again. I did have a surgeon's appointment and before I even brought up the stalls he said he wanted to mention something to me. He asked if I had been diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome. I said no and he said that when he saw inside of my body my fat distribution was consistent with those with Metabolic Syndrome and said he has no doubt that I would have been diagnosed soon without surgery. I asked him what that even meant. He said I would probably lose weight more slowly because it was resilient fat that did NOT want to come off, but once it came off the other fat would start "melting off". When I got home I looked up Metabolic Syndrome. I do sometimes have high blood pressure if I eat high sodium foods, but have never had high blood sugar or triglycerides or any other risk factor. Wondering if anyone else has been diagnosed with this and how slow is slow on weight loss? I don't want to make an excuse for slow weight loss or all these stalls and get complacent. Is it possible this surgery will fail because of this? I'm so nervous now and have a million questions I never thought to ask.

No offense, but you haven't even gotten on the wagon yet in order to fall off.... You'll understand what I'm saying, perhaps in a few months.... Your appetite coming back means you are recovering from surgery nicely...putting you at a place exactly were you were in terms of weight loss before the surgery.....Nothing.... Now the real fun begins, getting you band (and yourself) adjusted so this surgery can start to take on some real meaning.... BTW, my total lack of self control and will power was the primary reason I needed surgery...If I had those things I never would have been obese and would never have needed something as drastic as corrective surgery to my digestive tract.... I know why I had this done....and I won't forget it....

I called and they literally told me they can't find any info on the requirements. I started the process as an 3 mos in but have heard conflicting stories at to 3 or 6 mos. Did you have any specific requirements as to weight loss during the pre op period?

Since your surgery, what are some of the things you struggle with? How do you cope?
BostonStrong617 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I guess I'll start. Hydrating is tough for me. I've never done well with hydrating, even before the surgery. It always seems like such a chore. I push myself daily to at least meet the minimum, but I know I need to do better. I've always been one of those people who doesn't eat until she absolutely has too (and by then I am starving). I do my best to remember to bring small, light, healthy Snacks, but in the hustle and bustle I often forget... Since my surgery, all things Protein seem to turn me off. I'm finding ways (I am only 7.5 weeks out) to trick my mind and tastebuds, but it is definitely a challenge. I'm sure as time goes on I'll get the hang of it. I feel like I am overly critical of my every move when it comes to food. I feel guilty I had to get the surgery to help me weight loss and other medical issues...but I know I ultimately saved my own life. Anyway, just wanted to hear the experiences of others. My SO and kids have been so incredibly supportive, but I feel very lonely in this journey sometimes. Thanks! Monique -

I can hardly believe this. I took Biotin the placebo for 1 1/2 years wore wigs and visors. Finally I have hair again. It has been three years and I am now pushing myself to get some more weight off, reverting to shakes. Scares me to think I might go through this again.

Definitely take this time to get prepared! Spend more of your time reading the post-op forum than the pre-op forum. That way, you won't be the one asking these same questions that get asked every single day here: HELP it's after surgery and I feel hungry, is that normal? HELP every time I eat my stomach roars and grumbles, is this normal? HELP I'm three weeks out from surgery and the scale hasn't moved in four days, what am I doing wrong? HELP I'm on full liquids and I can drink a protein shake really fast. Did they actually do my surgery? HAVE I STRETCHED MY SLEEVE? What should I eat on purees? When should I start exercising again? How long until I can lift my baby/toddler after surgery? When can I go back to work? If I lift weights, use expensive oils and body wraps, and gobble 1000000 mcgs of biotin every day, I will successfully avoid having any loose skin or suffering any hair loss, right? What should I take with me to the hospital? etc. Seriously, though, being nervous is completely normal and understandable -- but keep reminding yourself, complications and an early death are a lot more likely if you remain obese rather than undergo a surgery that is safer than a gallbladder removal. No surgery is risk free but obesity is a lot riskier than this surgery!

Wow!! Lot's of detail. Thanks!! Definitely great information. Thanks. I'm sorry to hear about how your first band went! Glad you've been able to start again.. My appt went well with professor O'Brien. I felt very comfortable. I also love the sound of the after care. " partner ship " that they proud them selves on and that the will be there all the time for you. I did have the option to stay overnight and if things don't go well I will stay over night. I chose not to in the time being as I have 2 kids.. A 4 year old and a 20 month old and I don't really want to spend a night away from the little one as he wakes through the night and wants me. I have had 2 c-sections I'm thinking they would have been a little more challenging and I did pretty well afterwards so I feel as though I can do the day and come home to bed. With a some pain relief. Not sure how old you are you put 2 ages! Lol. I'm 32. I'm 5 foot 7 and about 112kgs. I would like to be about 70. I think if I were any smaller I would look funny! I would just love to lose enough that I feel comfortable in myself. 70 would be a dream. Hopefully I will make it. Yes definitely a long road ahead and a big lifestyle change. Oh you never know! Sometimes when you have less to lose its harder. That can be " our " challenge?! You have a couple of weeks on me... You will have to fill your details out on the profile on here so that you can track your weight loss. It's a great idea. I love reading people's that are I front of me. I haven't had to do any pre op diet. So I've been pretty lucky. Apparently he felt my liver and he said it feels good. Christmas I feel maybe a little challenge for me as I will be only day 8 but I chose this appt. I was going to be booked in for next month and I wanted to get it out of the way! I was cheeky and asked if he had an earlier appt. I'm ready. Lol Are you at the Glen Iris Practice? Oh are you doing the survey research? I said Yes. I'm not sure it may only be a professor O'Brien thing. What part of Melb are you? We are in the eastern suburbs. Keep cool today! : ) and thanks for all the info.

calorie counter website?
amey_idaho replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use this on my Droid Eris (Calorie Counter) and it syncs with My FatSecret.com so I can access it anywhere. It also tracks excercise, % of Daily Intake, weight loss to goal, and will track Protein, carbs, fat, and a bunch of other things you can personalize. I love it!! -
Low BMI desperately seeking surgeon
itschoice replied to middlegirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got banded here and they say you qualify with a BMI of 27 or greater. They are located in California, USA. I hope that helps. A number of years ago my BMI was much lower than it is now so I know how you feel. Good luck. If you want my name or have any other questions PM me. Pre op exam yesterday went well
SmallerChristie replied to NC Dave's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Congratulations on your big pre-op loss! The 25th will be here before you know it. I can't say I blame you on the liquids thing. You'll have plenty of liquids POST surgery.... I think it's cruel to make you do it 2 weeks beforehand, too! I only had to do liquids for 2 days pre-op, and that was rough. -
weight gain during 6 month waiting period
Susie1226 replied to dreamonique's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have BCBS and I did 3 months of weights management. I didn't lose but gained bc of the holidays. Luckily there was no specific weight loss requirement. I guess it just varies. -
Has anyone lost weight but not pant sizes?
paula replied to bandtastic's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Bandtastic, Many months ago I had the privledge of being with about 7 other bandsters. One of the things we talked about was that a few of us had problems with our pants being tight in the waist and big in the legs. So, Im thinking this is a commen complaint! Even at my 60 something pound weight loss, I still have problems finding pants (jeans) that fit "right". Since Im big busted, Im not as concerned with my shirts. But my pants are a BIG issue for me! -
Has anyone lost weight but not pant sizes?
Sunta replied to bandtastic's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes! I was shocked when I tried on my pants having lost 17.4 pounds and they were not one bit looser! I attribute this to the majority of my weight being water weight lost from inside my body, and some loss from my face, hands, and feet instead of actually fat from my legs. My legs are the biggest and therefor will be the last to go. I do notice my shirts are a tiny bit looser, but that's it. I was expecting to be down almost two sizes because I read somewhere that every 10 pounds is one size, and I was really shocked when my pants fit as tight as ever! Also, I haven't done any exercise so there's no muscle to make me smaller. Ah well, it will all come with time
