  1. Hello all!! I am being banded on Wednesday and I don't know what to feel. I've read so many negative things about the band and I'm feeling kind of pessimistic. I was told to stay off the Internet, but then I found this forum and it seemed pretty positive. Im getting pre-op nerves. What if I don't wake up? What if this surgery doesn't help me lose weight no matter how hard I try? I want to be excited, I really do, as this is something that I've wanted for a long time and it's finally coming true, but it just doesn't feel real to me. I should be excited about this new journey I am about to go on, but I'm not as excited as I thought I would be. Did anyone else feel like this??
  2. Those of you who have lost 100+ pounds...what was your starting weight, your daily regimen, and how long did it take you?
  3. So we have a scale at work-which I just discovered. It's a community scale for anyone to use. I just weight myself and I came in at 237.8lbs....now I'm a little hesitant to believe this due to me getting weight at the doctors office and I was 248lbs less than a week ago. This doesn't make sense. I have been working out but lately not eating well. I haven't had the surgery yet and I'm skeptical to trust this in fear of getting my hopes up just to be crushed...... Also, I'm starting to question wither I should have the surgery or not. Everyone keeps telling me it's the "easy way out", but they have No idea.....idk I'm just a bundle of mixed emotions. Sorry
  4. I just wanted to say hello to everybody and say how very excited I am to be here. I have been thinking about weight loss surgery for years, and I have made up my mind to do it. I have researched a lot and attended a seminar for the program in which I am going to participate. No longer nervous or hesitant, just READY! My insurance will not pay for weight loss surgery, so I have been saving up and with my upcoming tax return and a little luck, I will have what I need to move ahead with it. I chose the Sleeve because I want a permanent healthy solution to the weight problem that has followed me my entire life and has affected every aspect of my life. I have never been sedentary, don't eat more than anybody else, the weight just stays with me. I was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader for several years; did all the hiking and camping despite carry this extra weight around with me. I love to ride our motorcycle with my boyfriend and entertain and have our friends over. My daughter is an Irish dancer and we do all of the parades and events, and I am always running with my kids. I guess it hit me around Christmas this year when I was in the mall with my daughter and I was having trouble just walking around the mall that now is the time. My feet hurt, my back hurt, I was huffing and puffing; I have never let my weight stop me from doing the things I wanted, but at 45 I guess it is catching up to me. I have sleep apnea, and although I'm not yet a diabetic, it runs rampant in my family so I know if I continue down this path it will happen. My boyfriend is great - he loves me for who I am, but I want to do this for him and my children too. He worries about my health and is supportive of my decision. I have enrolled in a local program and have done all the pre-requisites, just waiting on the financial piece to fall into place. I am hoping to be able to get the surgery scheduled next month. I look forward to sharing my journey will all of you, and am glad to have found this site where I will hopefully find extra support along the way.

    2 Week Diet

I followed the Quick Weight Loss plan for 10 days of my 14 day pre op diet because I knew I would loose the weight and I started my 2 shakes and 1 meal on day 11. It worked because I lost 17 lbs by my surgery date. The purpose is to get your liver to shrink for the surgery. I don't regret it because the doc said my liver looked great and smaller during the surgery. I also did water aerobics every other day during my pre op.

    Nioxin anyone?

Hi. I haven't had surgery yet. They are suppose to be getting the paperwork together to submit to insurance. Just waiting. I am terrified of losing more hair. About a year ago I lost a lot of hair when my thyroid went out of wack. Tons of hair on the bathroom floor, in the drain, in my hands, on my clothes....frightening. It stopped falling out about 7 mths ago but is noticeably thin to me. Its also starting to grow little fine hairs now. I had super thick hair....couldn't see my scalp when I parted it.....now you can see my scalp, some what, and it scares the holy mess out of me. Having surgery and the thought of losing more of my hair because of it almost made me stop the process. But....after surviving the thyroid issue and hairloss, I know that my hair will grow back. A month ago I started using Nioxin hoping to get a jump start on the hairloss. Honestly, I noticed a difference the 2nd time I used it !! I get less hair in the drain now.....even though my hair loss already stopped....I don't notice hair on my clothes and when I put gel in my hair there are only a couple strands on my hands. It gives my hair a little body too...which helps disguise the scalp where I part my hair. I have also been taking 5000mg of Biotin a day and I take B12 under my tongue 2xs a day. I also make sure I get Protein with every meal now too. I am going to do anything and everything I can to avoid the hairloss. But, If its going to happen, regardless of what I do, I know that it will grow back and life will go on. Its a small...all be it, scary....price to pay to drop this weight once and for all!

    PCP approval

You know, I was really worried my primary would be against me having the surgery because we're both the same age and I thought she would judge me for it and she was actually very supportive. She just asked which surgery I was looking in to and she said "Oh that's great I went to a seminar on that this year!" and wrote my letter on the spot. They may surprise you! Even if they're against weight loss surgery in general, their only job in this process (if you're doing your supervised diet, if you have one, through your surgeons office) is to state that you meet the medical necessity guidelines. If they're unwilling to do that then I'm sure your surgeon can point you in the right direction.
  11. I have Cigna as well. My surgery is scheduled for May 22. I didn't have to provide my weight for the last 5 years, only all the diets I have tried in that time frame. I think they look more at your weight during the doctor supervised diet. They want you to have lost some during that 6 months time frame. I think they want to see a 10% loss. If you have any comorbidities, it is easier to get approved with a BMI of less than 40. By the way, I was denied twice before they finally approved it, so don't give up! Good luck!
  12. Hi Wendy: I have Cigna and have been approved. My surgery date is June 6. As to your question about the 5 year history, it is my understanding that if your BMI is 40 you only need history for 12 months. However, I did send records of my weight over the past 5 years, it showed a BMI of 36-38 with weight loss and gain. My BMI has only been over 40 for the past 6 months ( I let myself go to be sure to qualify) I do have sleep apnea, and arthritis, but that was never really documented. I did have one Doctor's notes from the sleep center. I think the main thing they really look at if you have the BMI of 40, is the 6 months of doctor supervised diet and it HAS to be 6 consecutive months. Hope this helps. I was approved quickly. The papers were submitted on a Tuesday and denied on Wednesday, the information about the 6 months diet was arranged in order and re-faxed and I was immediately approved! Yea Cigna! Call then and ask questions. I did and they were always very, very helpful! Good luck:thumbup:
  13. Hi, everyone. I look forward to contributing to this community. I was just recently banded on May 10, 2010 by Dr. Thomas Bass in South Florida. I've lost a total of 27 pounds since May 3rd when I started the pre-op process which is kind of crazy, but very exciting. I'm looking forward to losing weight, exercising, toning, all that jazz. Hopefully, we can all support each other through this journey. I look forward to learning much from everyone! -KidLaw

    Hi, I’m new here

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you are, say, 5'5", getting from a BMI of 60 to a non-obese BMI of 30 would mean an additional weight loss of 180 lbs. (on top of the other 80 lbs.) which even the most hardened insurance company would see requires surgery. But definitely ask your bariatric center for guidance and access to a nutritionist/dietitian to help you get those 80 lbs. down.

    Hi, I’m new here

Most insurance companies require that your BMI be higher than 40, or 35 with co-morbidities like diabetes or sleep apnea ... and you often have to be able to show you can lose some weight, so losing weight to get to a BMI of 60 wouldn't disqualify you at all. Also, the surgery center probably has an insurance specialist who knows what your particular insurance company requires and can help you set up all the appointments and everything else. I had 4 months of nutrition classes required by insurance, so I decided to live a bit like I would live after surgery during that time. I did lower carb and higher protein and lost about 50 lbs prior to surgery. Of course, my problem was that I got to the point where my BMI was going to be too low for surgery, so I started eating junk again (throwing food funerals!) when I got closer to the pre-op "shrink the liver" diet. My BMI was about 40 or 41 day of surgery, down from 49 when I called the surgeon and started the program. Any weight you can lose now is weight you will not have to lose after surgery. I found that will higher protein, lower carbs, and low added sugars (I still ate fruit and occasionally small amounts of ice cream), I was less hungry and had fewer cravings. I'm actually more hungry now after surgery, which sucks because I can barely eat anything (although I'm only 3 weeks out and most people say they are not hungry).

    Hater?

So scary to see how people can be so insensitive to others...... I doubt that her friend with the sleeve actually gained back 30 lbs.......She might of had the band...... Anyways, that is her dilemma not yours.....So please don't own this..... You are learning new habits and changing the old habits that got you to the place where you had to make a decision. Now the ball is in your hands, so now you get to run with it.....Doesn't really matter what others say, the only thing that matters is what you say, thing, and do.....This is your life and I applaud you for all the hard work that you've done so far....>CONGRAT!

    Hello!

Welcome and warmest congratulations on all you've accomplished! Stalls are most often normal and part of the weight loss. Unless you've changed your diet/exercise routine significantly, then your weight loss will likely start again. I've had two stalls that lasted almost a month each, but the weight loss started up again. I've read that a stall over a month and you should look closely at your caloric intake, carb intake, grazing, exercise routine, and so on...to see if any of those items could be triggering the stall. Of course, we're all different and can stall at different times and for different lengths. Continued success to you and don't get discouraged!

  19. Hi everyone! I'm soooooo excited to have my surgery on Dec 17th! I am a full time college student finishing my degree interning as a student teacher. I graduate on Friday the 14th of December and I get sleeved the following Monday!! However I'm a little concerned about not having enough energy after Xmas break. I am taking over a teaching position right after Xmas break (January 6th) and I'm hoping that ill be recovered enough to handle being on my feet all day in a class FULL of students (we have almost 40 kids) these are 4 th graders and can suck the energy right out of you! When did all of you get your e egret boost I've been hearing so much about. Right now I'm 5'7" and 380 lbs. so it's hard to keep up with. I know it should be easer after I get some of this weight off
  20. See the problem is I haven't lost all that much weight yet. About 15 lbs, and I have felt it from the day I got home,

    Newly Sleeved!

Welcome @helladoll. That is a hell of a weight loss in 6 days! I hope you continue to heal well and the pain subsides quickly. Keep trying to get that Protein in. I was sleeved a week ago tonight. So far so good except for some incision pain when I rise from sitting or lying down. I walked for about 15-30 minutes tonight, the first day it was not 100 degrees outside and I got tired quickly. Just taking it day by day.

    A journey prolonged??

So, I am almost 2 1/2 months out from surgery. I got sick so lost a ton and then stopped...I have even gained 5 lbs back. I have such good intentions and I still can't get it right. I can eat anything and do. know that I have to get the mental stuff on track. Workouts have been difficult due to an injury but maybe I am just making an excuse! I don't expect anyone to read this but I guess just taking the time to write it out will help...plus it means that I am not eating:-) I need a good hobby. Something to keep me busy, something to take my mind of things. I have even thought about getting rid of my tv so I don't have that trigger. Night time and tv are the biggest along with all that emotional stuff.:huh2: I feel pretty hopeless. I want to do right for myself. I want food to just be food and not a crutch. I want to force myself to eat and forget to eat:-) Those things that thin people do. My boyfriend can just forget to eat for a whole day. How do people do that? My frustration is very high and I have thought of all sorts of things to try to get over it. Well....all I can do is try. And every day that I wake up is a challenge to be successful. I just don't know how to do it!

    Bowels

OMG I went a few days after surgery and then almost 2 more weeks and had not gone again...had to do enemas and miralax...it was torture. Doc told me to take pericolace if needed now. I think that was why my weight loss was slow after the first week...cause I was so full of $h@!

Ahh..weight loss surgery and the bathroom. So, for most people the first couple of weeks is smooth sailing! Sometimes a little to smooth.. But soon the constipation sets in and it will be a continuous problem for quite awhile as Iggy stated because of our diet. You need to find something that works for you. I would have a conversation with your doctor about this. I myself find the fiber gummies useless, I take miralax every day in one of my glasses of mio water.
