    Just curious

I don't think keto is any more a fad diet than is the diet recommended to post surgical bariatric patients. They both have specific purposes and are (or were) very effective for their original purposes. The keto diet was originally developed a long time ago as a specific treatment for severe epilepsy. At the time, before antiepileptic drugs, it worked very well in controlling symptoms. The problem is that it became popular for weight loss and it's probably not the healthiest way to eat long term. That said, I think the same thing is true for the post-surgical bariatric diet. It's a diet developed for a specific purpose and it works well for that, but it's not really a healthy way to eat for the general population. The reason we eat a protein forward diet is for a few reasons: Protein helps preserve as much muscle as possible while eating a low calorie or very low calorie diet. This helps keep your metabolism as high as possible so you burn more calories at rest. A carb forward diet (or even a more balanced diet), would cause your body to burn less fat at any given time because carbs are easily burned for energy, whereas protein is not. Protein (actually the amino acids in protein), are essential to your bodies proper functioning, whereas consumption of fat or carbs is not nearly as important. Protein is even more important when healing, thus it's critical post-surgery. The reason the medical community focuses on protein for bariatric surgery patients is due to the above. It's not because protein is actually "healthier". It's just because we are so restricted in what we can eat, thus tradeoffs must be made. I think most doctors would agree that once a bariatric surgery patient can eat more, they should not eat more protein, but instead should work to add healthy fats and carbs ASAP in the form of more whole foods. The general consensus in the medical community is that the healthiest diet is one that starts with lots of fruits and vegetables, has very little processed food, and a lot less meat than what most American or Western Europeans eat.

    September surgery buddies!!

Do you have an enlarged liver? Or is this just your programs standard pre-op plan? If it's just the standard plan, I wouldn't worry too much this time, just try not to cheat again, especially closer you get to the surgery. While I was encouraged to lose weight before surgery (sleeve), I only had to do a one day clear liquid diet and 2oz of milk of magnesia the day before. I was still, ugh, passing water right up to putting on the hospital gown. I'm a worrier, and was mildly worried about my liver suddenly becoming enlarged even though I only have very very minimal liver problems (some stuff shows up on my blood work but it's not enough for my PCP to worry). If you do have an enlarged liver, I still wouldn't get too worked up this time, just be more careful.

there will be lots of days where you don't loose weight and some where you might "gain" its all part of the process don't stress, don't weight yourself everyday. pick a day and a time and weight yourself on that day at that time each week. some even only weight once a month lol not me though some only weigh at the dr appointment but the more you weight yourself the more fluctuations/ "stalls" and I use that term loosely you will see.
  4. Yes! There are so many things I have not been able to do with my weight, I am looking forward to be under weight limits for things!

Not eating, drinking or walking enough…

I had surgery 9 months ago and didnt hit my goals until at least 6 months along. I had so much nausea and vomiting that taking the extra vitamins and calcium was tough. So I rarely did. I never ever got enough water or protein. Then on the 6th month I saw the right person and got the help I needed. Two doses of the right PPi a day. My husband was so worried for me. Since then I have gained strength and can do loads more. My body tells me when its time to rest and sometimes take a day off. I rarely get more than 60 gms of protein a day and if I had not found protein yogurts that I could stomach, I would still struggle. My calorie count is about 650 to 1000 a day. I am lucky that I have no hunger. I dont count my liquid intake but its probably less than it should be but I am ok with that. Its not a biggy with my team either. I am not dehydrated I can walk anywhere I want to now as before I would need a walking stick to go the shortest distance and be puffing like an old train. I may have had a slow start but it has not affected my weight loss, other than having more stalls when I have not been able to eat enough. Every persons journey is different. Its hard not to compare yourself to others but it does no good in the long run. I didnt exercise until month 6 and I knew I didnt have enough strength to do more than keep my home clean and go shopping. Now most days I have too much energy This surgery makes your hormones go stratospheric. Even at my age I knew my hormones where out of whack. My poor hubby couldn't understand why I was so short with him. I was just like when I had PMT again. My team were never bothered about my progress, just helpful I hope you get through your period quickly and get the right amount of ppi for the nausea. You will then gallop along
  6. Totally amazed I am down 87 lbs from my high weight and I am still pre op!   The hard work is paying off.  Can’t imagine how different things will be a year from now.

Not eating, drinking or walking enough…

I still struggle to hit my water and protein goals. Some days I hit them, others I fall a little short. Give youself some grace. My doc's office is staffed with a whole bunch of people who have never had weight loss surgery. I respect their advice but I also have to remember that they've never been in my situation. Also, I'm VERY tall for a woman and I realize some of the advice they give is tailored to to the average person. Instead, I try to listen to what my body needs. I also try not to compare myself with others because my situation is unique. Instead, I focus on my habits. I'm sending good vibes your way. That time of the month is the worst.

Not eating, drinking or walking enough…

our clinic didn't give goals. There are so many things that affect rate of weight loss that you have little to no control over - like age, gender, starting BMI, metabolic rate - that it's really kind of pointless and can be discouraging to those of us "slow losers". If we stuck to the plan, stayed active, and our general weight trend was down, we were good. even though we didn't have goals, I lost 16 lbs the first month, and ended up losing 100% of my excess weight, over 200 lbs.

Yep. I've heard it's common. Almost exactly at the 2-week mark recently for me I was the same weight for 4-5 days, but I knew it was just a matter of time before I'd see it come off again so wasn't worried. Now I'm back to losing daily.
  12. I'm buying a lot of clothes also specially the brands that I've always wanted to buy but didn't have my size. I'm planning to a big getaway for when I reach the goal weight 😃
  13. Hi guys. I will soon be down to 100 kg (from 149 kg in late January 22) and have been thinking of rewarding myself for achieving this milestone 😀. I wonder how did you guys reward yourselves when you reached your goal weight? or during the journey. The new iPhone sounds like a good start 🤣 specially with my 40th birthday around the corner. We deserve some self-love, right.

Is this it? Is my body done?

Thanks. Yes you may be right, I started with a goal of 155 but I got greedy. My doctor said I could make it to 160 in one year. 23 years ago I was 124 and felt great but consensus was that I looked too skinny. I let that go to my head and went up to 134. I felt good and people stopped commenting on how thin I was, I have a way to hide weight. Then I got married and started a process to get pregnant ( it did not work) but I gained 60-80 pounds in 2 years, it all went down hill from there and I could not handle it for almost 20 years just kept going higher and higher, I did diet and lost 20 then gained 30, the cycle repeated so many times that I am giving myself room for re-gain. Maybe I should talk about this with the shrink.

It happens to all of us & often several times. Stick to top your plan. Don’t stress. Let your body takes the time it needs to adjust to the changes. You’ll start to lose again. If we all got stuck & never lost again, none of us would have lost our weight.
  16. I find non NSAID over the counter meds useless too. I was very happy when my surgeon said I could have the rare NSAID. Mind you I was 2 yrs out when he told me that. Yep, tramadol is an opioid so you want to avoid that & all other opioids like oxy. I used to suffer a lot with cramping, aching legs, etc. with my periods too. Fortunately not anymore. I found boosting my calcium intake the couple of days before helped but it was the pill that helped best - sorted out those hormones. You may find as you lose more weight some of your symptoms may reduce simply because you won’t have as much oestrogen stored in your body. Fingers crossed that happens for you. In the meantime, a conversation with your GP & maybe a request to see a pain management specialist.

I hit my 3 week stall at 2 1/2 weeks. It's normal. It'll break and you'll lose weight again. Just stick to your plan and watch for the non scale victories. Those are a huge help.

    August surgery buddies!

I'm 4 days late, and feel miserable!! Besides I'm bloated, my feet are swelling. I've been in the famous 3rd week stall, for 10 days. I decided not weight myself until monday, that is my follow up appointment with my surgeon...counting the days for soft food.

    August surgery buddies!

Thanks. I just started feeling like I turned the corner this week. I've also been stalled. A few days ago I called my younger cousin who had the sleeve 3 years ago and talked to her for a while. She let me vent and then told me that she felt like the weight loss was so slow and she was constantly worried she wasn't losing enough. Then one day she woke up and was 100 pounds down. She said not to stress and that the weight loss will happen. Everybody heals differently. I hope your stronger, more energetic self is right around the corner too!

    August surgery buddies!

That's great. Congrats! I'm 30 days past surgery and still feel kind of weak. I get winded from walking and I fall asleep most afternoons after work. I am getting closer to my protein goals, although my weight has stalled now for almost two weeks. I'm not sure I'm glad I had this surgery.

Is this it? Is my body done?

You're doing great! You're a month ahead of me and have lost 20 lbs more than I have. I wonder if a goal weight of 130 is too low? At your height, 140-150 seems like the sweet spot, especially as a weight loss surgery patient.

    September surgery buddies!!

I just turned 53 and I'm right there with you! When my doc asked, "have you been heavy your whole adult life?", I realized that the answer was YES. I had never even thought about it in those terms before. Even with losing 30 lbs here, 70 lbs there just to gain them back, I still could only answer YES....I've read lots of books and this forum is SO GOOD. Good luck on your journey!

Yup - I lost the first week … then scales didn’t move week two. Then they moved a tiny bit (I’m 3 weeks and two days post op now) and today my period decided to show up - so I’ve had a bit of a gain. I’m wildly stressed for my first in person follow up next week - because I’m worried I won’t have made enough progress - but I’m sticking to my plan and doing my best to stay on track. It is what it is. As long as I follow my plan I know my weight will come off. My labs are showing improvement over my pre op numbers and my clothes are definitely getting loose. So I’m trying to focus on the signs that I’m headed in the right direction and not fixate on just the scales. Hang it there - your body is still recovering from the surgery … as you move forward you will see the progress.

  25. I was in Costco the other day. I don't know if this counts as a NSV but it was interesting to me. They had protein powder on sale and I was looking at it and it was a different version of my usual brand (Orgain) but way cheaper and I said "I wonder how this one tastes" to my husband. Another lady told me they had samples and we got to talking and I said I usually use this brand but a different version and then she was asking me questions about it and I was giving her advice on where I get the other version, how I use it, etc. I just think it's funny that someone would talk to me about nutrition without batting an eye, not knowing that I ever weighed almost 400 pounds. It feels good but at the same time weird, because I actually was just as into health and nutrition then, I just never could eat small enough portions. I could have given the same advice 2 years ago, but no one would have asked me or believed I could know anything. Now, I look the part. I'm glad people aren't able to look at me and assume all the bad things they probably did before I lost weight, but it's sad too. I'm the same person.
