    The Maintenance Thread

I am having a bone density scan today. I don't have an issues/family history. I am in my 40's, 10 months post op and want to get a base line. I figure if there are no issues then I will ask for one in a few years once i'm close to 50 and then maybe repeat every 4-5 years if it still shows no issues just to be safe. I thought it was interesting that they said I couldn't take any calcium supplements for 24 hours before the scan so I skipped my vitamin and calcium supplements. I stood on a scale at the gym and I am curious if the % muscle etc. will be comparable or way off.

  3. My guidelines are 3 oz of protein with 1 oz vegetable for lunch and dinner (as FluffyChix says below, by volume), and a green smoothie for breakfast (but very little fruit), supplementing with up to two protein shakes to get enough protein. Dr. Duc C. Vuong on YouTube says when able, try to make the veg at either lunch or dinner a small salad cut into very small bites - haven't gotten to the point of trying it yet and imagine it's more than 1 oz.. He says to watch the protein amount - too much is just as bad as too little and it depends on how active we are and if we did anything extra such as go on a long, hard hike. He also cautions against relying on protein shakes and to pick high protein foods for meals. I've been following his advice and taking very small bites, then chewing at least 20 times before swallowing - essentially making everything into a soft food. So far, so good. Apparently everything must be moist. He says patients "push their sleeve" one extra bite per meal, so to be mindful of stopping when satisfied and to question each bite "Do I need this?" There's debate as to whether or not it actually can stretch, but he says the body adjusts to tolerate more food and has seen patients back up to eating a large plate of food at a time and it's junk food - and regain the weight. Bear in mind I'm new - only got mine on Dec. 2, 2019. But so far, so good. I've learned a great deal from Dr. Vuong - more than from my nutritionist in the program.
  4. When I first had my RNY I only weighed when I went to my doctors office, which is what my team ask of all there post op patients until they have seen the doctor for there first follow up. Then after they encourage there post ops to only weight 1x a week on the same day and around the same time. I have adapted the 1x a week weigh in for myself. I don’t have any stress over seeing that number on my scale anymore. If I don’t lose and maintain I can deal with that. I have not had any gains in my 10 months post op.

    Help!

I had Gastric Sleeve Surgery on March 5 2019. I had been doing great. Losing from 335 to 234, I am back up to 250 and scared, Has this happened to anyone? I did incorporate social drinking back into my diet. I just don't want old habits/ways of coping to sneak up on me. Also, I needed to increase my protein so started drinking high protein coffee in the morning but its about 100 calories plus 36 for the almond milk, mistake even though 15 grams of protein? What tricks did you use to get back on track? Thank you

Not really a rant but just frustrating

It’s also important for you to know that not everyone ends up looking haggard at all. I still look many years younger than my age. Even when I achieved below my goal weight, there was no haggardness. As a matter of fact, I started getting compliments that I looked even more years younger than my age. It also depends on how you lose the weight. Getting more than 86 oz of fluids (mostly water) and 90 grams of protein daily will help your body to heal correctly. It can be a struggle but it is also possible. I’m a living witness. I also worked out 5 to 6 days a week, cardio and weight training (when I was released to start working out). I lost over 160 lbs in 10 months. You can do it!!

I am on day 6 of a 10 day clear liquid diet. It sucks, but will hopefully be worth it in the long run!

Completed tummy tuck and thigh liposuction

I also received a tummy tuck with lipo suction to my flanks (love handles) on Dec. 11, 2019. I'm doing well. The first week was rough. So much pain! In the past, had four c-sections and by the third day I was off all pain meds. --Not with this surgery! However, I'm very satisfied with the results and feel after losing 80 pounds that this was very needed.

The biggest emotional rollercoaster with this surgery

hey guys! I had my surgery on Tuesday December 17! I’m so glad I did it. I’m so thankful that things came out well and I’m on the other side. What my doctor did, seems so foreign to me right about now. I’m focused on this new opportunity God has given me and I’m so grateful. 1 week post op and I have lost 10 pounds! Crazy since I started with a BMI of 35. I have been walking a lot, and following my surgeons instructions to the T. I’m still in liquids until I see him next week but I’m doing well. I thought Christmas Eve would be hard with all the food around but nope. I put my protein shake in a glass and enjoyed it while my family had dinner. ❤️love this tool. ❤️❤️💕

    January 2020 Surgery Date

This is my first post on the forum. My surgery day is 1/10/2020 at Stanford ValleyCare in Pleasanton, California. My surgeon is Dr. Estakhri and I will have a gastric sleeve. Pre-op visit will be on 01/02/2020. I originally was at Stanford in Palo Alto but there office was so hard to communicate with and for 3 months we went round and round just trying to get a test submitted. I thought it wouldn’t be for another year and then my other doctor referred my to Dr. Estakhri and their office has been wonderful! I’m trying to prepare and figure out what shakes and protein I can have on hand. I can’t tolerate whey at all so that’s a challenge.

    Need help Weight gain

I went back and read your past posts on the site. I'm sorry to hear about your brain and spine surgery in 2016. Was the Bypass in February a revision surgery? Your surgeons office ruled out medical issues, right? Did they give you any instructions on diet logging your food in an app? You posted this Posted April 19, 2016 Hi everyone, I am 3 1/2 out and I am gaining weight. I had lost 180lbs with 20 to go but now I have gained 30lbs. Over the passed 2 years I have had two major surgery that have lifted me not able to excise or eat right. I don't have a nut anymore because he retired. Can someone please tell me how I can get back on track.

What to do about weight gain?

I'm sorry for your struggles!!! ((hugs)) Depression is a b***h!! It sets up not only emotional and behavior barriers for making healthy choices, but it also sets up a physiological cascade of stress hormones whose job it is to keep you alive! And keep you eating! So it activates all the hunger hormones and we eat and eat and eat and we eat the kinda of stuff that will give us a biochemical reward of dopamine and seratonin (feel good hormones), cuz you know...we're depressed. Right? Let's build some neurotransmitters to help! So the answer is simple and difficult at the same time. You have to dig deep down and find the will and the willpower to say, "Fork this spit! I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore! Today is the day I step out in change! I'm choosing to make a better choice!" Then you take tiny little baby steps to make the next best choice. You don't look forward and you quit looking back. And pretty soon you've racked up days and weeks and months of making the next best choice and you are back on track. Like @catwoman7 I know absolutely how easy it is to not make the best choice and to have weight quickly pile back on to my body. I'm not metabolically blessed or particularly flexible. And I'm very cautious as I finalize year 2 post op and move into year 3. Cuz I do NOT want weight loss to "just happen". There are things I do to keep my weight in balance: GOLDEN RULE: When struggling with regain or stalls or a slow down in weight loss rate-thou shalt weigh daily, measure and take a picture monthly, and plan and log everything that you shove down your piehole. Everything. Good and bad. (Oh, I'm talking about you Mr. Pringle and Mr. Lays...I'm talking about you, Ernest and Julio-the Gallo Brothers.) 1. Eat on my Forever Diet Plan given to me by my doctor and RD for as many consecutive days as humanly possible. (Lean dense protein forward, healthy al dente veggies next, a bit of healthy fat with it, and if I'm still hungry, then either more veggies or a low glycemic serving of fruit.) 2. Absolutely adhere to getting in my water (100+oz per day) with the 15/45 rule in place. And I water load as well. That's staying well-hydrated all day but 15 mins before a meal I will drink about 3/4 of my full capacity of water, then sip, sip, sip, until I'm very full with water and feel like I can't drink any more. Then I wait 15 mins and eat my next scheduled meal. After that, nothing liquid for 45mins. It works like magic to reduce the amount of hunger, reduce volume eaten at a meal, and help me feel my full signal quicker. 3. Take my supplements. 4. Limit snacking to schedule healthy mini-meals to keep blood sugar balanced. As soon as the rollercoaster of blood sugar stops, I start cutting out between meal snacks. 5. Get lots of walking in daily. 6. Have stress relieving activities scheduled (4-square breathing, meditation or prayer, group support meetings and clubs/groups you enjoy, hobbies, crafts & coloring by numbers. 7. Watch comedies and laugh. (increases endorphins=feel good hormones) 8. Hug the people you love tightly for 1-3minutes (increases oxytocin and the feel good hormones). 9. Practice self-affirmation in the mirror. Look in a mirror and stand in a super hero pose. See yourself as a hero. Smile. Believe. 10. Get good rest. I mean it. Lights out. Totes dark room. Cool. Sleep at least 6 hours or more if you can. And you get up the next day and make a 1 day PROMISE / Choice to yourself to do it again that day. (I'm building an online private club with face to face group support meetings that will begin in January if you are interested. It's not instead of BP, but rather in addition to BP for those people who need an accountability partner/group. Let me know if you are interested.)

    Post op liquid diet

You should be on as clear as you can liquids and Most of us did not start protein till 10 days out. But dont freak out if the broth is not crystal clear or the jello is yellow. The term clear means thin not thick liquids not really in terms of color. So no on the Cream of mushroom Broth or Tomato Broths But a chicken broth or beef broth is fine - as for protein they do make clear liquid protein drinks Yes you can strain Egg drop but get the eggs out and then VItamix it
  20. I had my revision on 12/17/19. I too had complications of GERD from my sleeve that I had almost 13 years ago. Since surgery no GERD. I've been on a liquid diet until yesterday and I was able to start protein shakes with no problem. Prior to the surgery everything including water at times would come up. I lost over one hundred pounds with the sleeve and I did keep it off. I'm currently a bit underweight, but soon I will be able to eat healthier and hopefully live a better life. I must admit the conversion was a bit more painful, but I'm also a lot older too and my body has been traumatized a lot for the last two years. I had my surgery at the # 1 hospital in the country. I won't give the name because I don't want to put something they told me without their permission. Prior to the sleeve I had no problems with GERD. The surgeon told me they no longer do the sleeve there because they have had so many patients come to them for revisions after the sleeve due to GERD. I hope your surgery went as well as mine and you are on the road to recovery.
  21. Dec 23,19 gsv Hi everyone Today was my surgery vsg day!! Dr. Said surgery went really good, no issues. I did my preop liquid diet for 2 wks 12/9..and I'm doing liquid phase 1 and 2 for 10 days. Labs are good. RN told me my O2 stats got better just about 6hr ago. Guess they were low prior. Ive been up walking round the floors today too. Going home tomorrow if can hold liquids down: no vomiting and I progress ok. Stomach is very sore. No nausea and pain is a 4_5 most of the time. RN told me my O2 stats got better just about an hr ago. Guess they were low prior. Will come back and post as I progress.

    Post-Op Menstruation Issues

Yes, I had my surgery 11 months ago and I feel like I’ve been on my period for 10 months! 😞 AND I have an IUD and didn’t have periods prior to the surgery. My GYN said it would take time to level back out to normal.

    The Maintenance Thread

I know this wasn't directed at me, but I've had two skin removal surgeries (8/18 and 3/19). LBL was rough - but worth it. The recovery on my upper body procedures wasn't as bad (had some issues with the incisions on my upper body procedures, so it wasn't as smooth as it could have been - but it wasn't as painful as the LBL recovery)

    Surgery Scheduled

First off congratulations and welcome to Bariatric Pal. This site has been a source of support and knowledge for many of us on the same journey. There's a January 2020 Surgery thread for those of us who are going to have the procedure next month. My surgery date is 01/31/20, I'm so darn nervous and happy to have this site of wise people.

    The Maintenance Thread

based on your photos, we look like we're roughly in the same age category. There are a number of physicians now who think their "older adult" patients (I assume they mean 50+ or 60+) should be in the 23-27 BMI range. So basically at the higher end of their BMI range to maybe 5-10 lbs overweight. Supposedly it's the healthiest range for us as it gives us a little cushion in case we get sick. My PCP freaked out when I got down below a 22 BMI. I now sit right around a 25 and she's happy as a clam. So anyway, what I'm trying to say is, you're probably at an optimal weight right now (and you look it!) - and yes, you may actually be a bit lighter if you factor in the excess skin. I think you look perfect!
