  1. Welcome to lapband paula. Dr. Speigel is my doctor also. We are the same height and almost same weight. I was at 220. I am seven weeks out and am down 30. The best of luck to you. If you have any more questions just pm me.
  2. Spot

    3 months

Other than getting ill, causing me Lapband grief, I've very much enjoyed losing weight, and was at a good spot (I'm at a near complete unfill at the moment). I hope I can continue to lose while on restriction hiatus, and that I can get back to that good spot again within a reasonable time.
  3. From what I have seen, dinner plates are generally in the same size range. I think that the basic lesson here is that long term you will be able to eat about half in a meal of what you did before surgery, so don't count on only being able to eat 100g forever. Dr. Weiner's basic rule of thumb of eating about half the volume as previously is still restrictive enough to maintain good weight control if you develop the right habits, but leaves plenty of room for regain if you choose poorly. I think that this is part of the basis of his philosophy of eating a vegetable heavy diet, which is fairly bulky but also fairly low calorie, It's not the only way to go, but is a good approach.

    Lookin for advice

Sorry your husband is being less than supportive! I would think he'd want you to get healthy so he could keep ya around longer  I've not dealt with this....because my husband is very supportive....however I haven't told any of my family because I don't want to hear exactly what your husband is telling you..... I am the only over weight person in my family.....nobody else knows what it's like...it's just me. It doesn't help the fact that I'm adopted, and that's probably why I'm the only person in the family with a weight issue...just that no one has my genes... I really don't want to hear I'm taking the easy way out!

    Newbie from Texas

Tiffany, I am in Longview, TX but am having my surgery in Dallas at True Results through Dr. Marsden. He apparently has done over 4000 surgeries. So far the process has been fairly simple. I went on their website at www.trueresults.com and put in my insurance information and they called me a few days and told me my insurance covered the procedure. I have to pay my co-pay and 20% of surgery cost so the total is about $2400. I had to do a 3 month supervised weight loss program to meet insurance requirements for BCBS and some other stuff but it has gone pretty quick. I am having my surgery next Wednesday on the 23. Hope that helps.

    New support group

Hi Mandy, Well first off congrates... It not easy to come to terms with having to do something about your weight. It was last year in march when I started my process.... Your first appointment will be an easy one. Simple questions about you and your family history. He will ask you the why, how and how long you have been over weight. If your BMI and other things are in line then he will make another appointment to start the process rolling. It takes a while for all the tests to be done and the paper work. It was the right thing for me. I hope you get the info you want. If you have any other questions please email me. Anytime!!! Dr. Lee is great by the way. huntingtons@bevcomm.net

    Regain!

I have been at goal for several months now. I am 14 months post. I still have excellent restriction and can not see myself overeating at this point or anytime soon. The sleeve is different from the band and RnY. The stomach is smaller and you really can't stretch it back to a point where you can overeat. You still have to make good decisions, of course. I could eat a bowl of ice cream 5x a day. If I make bad decisions, I will have problems with weight loss for sure, but for me, one aspect of this journey was being able to examine my relationship with food. Everything has changed with the sleeve and that includes my thinking. Good luck!

    Rings too loose?

Hi there! I’m one month out from my VSG surgery and I’ve lost 47 lbs (21 before, 26 after). I’m still about 48 lbs from the weight I was 20 years ago, but my wedding ring is really loose. The fat had gone all around the ring, but not right under it. I’m wondering if the fat will remodel under my rings so they will fit again, or if I will need to get them resized. Thanks! 3 month stall?

Are you at least getting good tape measure results? I care more about that than the weight.

    Struggling Regain

The weight you want to lose is much easier than a 50 80 100+. Pound gain.... It can be done. Years out, much of weight loss is fighting the mental battles to get back on track. Seriously I have motivators on my fridge to remind me of my goal and where I want to be. Its right in my face when I am seeking food. Makes me stop and ask. Am I hungry? How much room for calories do I have left in my log for the day? Is this boredom or emotional/stress eating? (see photos below *lol*) All I can share is my personal experience. I’m a sleeve. My surgery was in 2014. I have worked off a gain in my third year. Log your food. Make sure you are eating your weight loss calories and macros.(Log including alcohol) I’m female 5”5” My calories are 900 to 1100 Carbs are 60 grams for weight loss. ***We are all different - You may need to dial in your calories to see what range you lose weight***. If you need help with this let me know. Get temptation out of the house and keep healthy options for sweet and salty cravings. I have a bit less restriction than I had in the first year. I found ways to fill the extra space and keep my calories/macros in range. Add as much veggies as you like until full. Ditch liquid and soft stage protein. Dense protein will help keep you feeling more satisfied. I’m not sure how you are going to trouble shoot your hydration. My surgeon gave me a prescription for zantac. Trial and error for fluids that sit well. I drink crystal light, pre workout or nuun tabs. I’m also back in weight loss mode for the summer* My food log is open.

    One Week To Go!!!

Hi everyone. I am now 1 week out from surgery and my approval came back from Carefirst and i am good to go. I was expecting to have to pay $275 in copays + 20% coinsurance. Apparently Carefirst changed my policy and now they cover 100% of everything except for a $25 doctor copay. That was great news for me. I am into week 2 of my modified liquid diet. (Allowed 1 high protein low carb meal a day + 4 protein shakes and under 1500 calories a day). I have been doing very good with this except for yesterday for Easter. I went over by about 600 calories and had double the carbs I should have. I still did so much better than I would have before I started this process. In the old days, I would have easily eaten 5000 calories. Back to my shake this morning and for lunch and back to the pool this afternoon. I have been swimming 90 - 120 minutes a day 3 - 4 days a week. I am going to miss that during the 2 weeks that I can not be submergered in water. I strongly recommend water exercise/swimming for anyone who has not been exercising because it is very low impact and burns lots of calories. At my weight, an hour of swimming is about 1300 calories burned. It took me about 45 days to build up to swimming this much. At first I swam some and then walked laps in the pool and then swam some more. I am sure post surgery, it will take some time to get back to being able to swim that much but I am committed to making that happen. I have not been on the scale yet this week and my scale does not match my doctor's scale. My goal has been to be below 400 prior to surgery and it will be close. Crossing my fingers and plan to get to the pool at least 4 days this week. Thanks for everyone's support. I will post next week after my surgery and I feel strong enough play on the computer.
  15. Hi Femme, It is sometimes very difficult to get your head around the band. I found after numerous trips to the bathroom :wink2: that the only way to eat is to take small bites and then chew and chew and chew and then chew some more. I find that once I take the first three fork/spoonfulls the rest is easy. Before I had the band I used to virtually inhale my food so it was a difficult road to begin with. As for the drinking whilst eating, sorry but thats a big no no. The thing is you will dilute your food and push it through the band quicker than it should go down and as a result you will be hungry more quickly and will not be satisfied for as long as you should be. Do try to eat normal foods just much slower than ever before and don't drink fluids for half an hour before your meals and for 2 hrs after. The optimum time to lose the weight is within the first two years of being banded. Good luck with your journey and keep posting we are here for you.:wink2:

    first fill coming up

I'm afraid if you weigh every day you are setting yourself up for discouragement. I admit I did weigh every day the three weeks after my surgery, while I was still on liquids. But once I moved to real foods I started weighing once a week on Friday mornings. Your body weight is going to naturally fluctuate each day due to many factors, so weighing daily isn't really a good indicator of how you are doing. Don't expect a drastic change with your first fill. From what everyone says, it can take several fills before you reach that "sweet spot" of restriction, where the food in your pouch takes 3-4 hours or more to pass through the stoma into the stomach. And it will do nothing for "head hunger". I've been fighting that this weekend. I know I'm not really hungry, but I find myself wanting to eat because I'm anxious about a few things. And I am NOT going to let myself start turning back to food for comfort. That's how I got here in the first place. I'm having my first fill tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it, and a little nervous too. I've not had any troubles with PBing at all, and I want to avoid that, but I know that with each fill comes the chance that something you've been eating with no problem could become a problem food. So I'm going to do liquids for at least a day or two afterwards, or whatever my doctor tells me to do. Then I'm going to be REALLY careful as I add back soft foods. Keep the faith! You've only been banded for a short time. And stay off those scales!
  18. I started gaining weight in my late teens and was never able to control it no matter what I did. My PCP had encouraged me to have bariatric surgery for the last five years or so, and I finally decided that I'd done everything else I could possibly do. The sleeve seemed like the best option for me, so I went to Dr. Alexander Abkin in Florham Park, NJ, who's one of the best doctors in the NJ-NY-CT area. After months of classes, tests, etc., I finally had my procedure two weeks ago. It's been a struggle to get down enough Protein, and Clear liquids have to be within a very narrow temperature range not to upset my stomach (the gurgling is loud enough to be heard from across the room if my drink is two degrees too warm or too cool), so I've had to be creative. I was told to go to full liquids as soon as full digestive function had returned, so the third day after surgery heralded the return of milk, yogurt. farina and Soups. Nine days post-op when I had my check-up I was told to progress to Phase III, and I've been adding cheese, fish and other items gradually. My highest weight was 304, and it was 295 the morning of my surgery. Shifting those few pounds was sheer misery, even though I never really ate much nor had much of an appetite. After the surgery the weight has truly fallen off: this morning the scale read 272, a drop of 23 pounds in 14 days. It will be great to lose weight and look better, but I'm really looking forward to being healthy enough to be able to see my grandchildren grow up. My son and his wife just told us that they're trying for their first, so by this time next year we may have a little one and his or her future is of vital importance to me.

  20. Hi Alicia: I was at a Chrias seminar on 1-9-08. I had my consult with Dr. Peters earlier that day. My insurance requires 12 weeks of documented weight loss attempts, so I have to wait until about April to get the lapband. I am doing all the other stuff now, so I can hopefully have the surgery in April. Chrias requires you to see various types of physicians to ok the surgery. It depends on your health. I am in good physical condition, just "big". as several doctors have told me. Chrias will make you go to "life classes" which teach you what to expect and how to plan menus for the various phases. (liquids, mushies, food, etc.) Did you meet with a surgeon yet?

    Wisdom about the sleeve

    1. Listen to your body and stop eating when you are no longer hungry, not full or stuffed. 2. Fuel your body with healthy foods. 3. Exercise is key to losing weight and improving your health.

    Wisdom about the sleeve

I don't think either one keeps you from losing weight - I eat cheese every day and I continue to lose weight - and it doesn't bind me up as many say it does to them - when I was early out, string cheese was a lifesaver for me. I haven't been able to tolerate yogurt since surgery - it's a consistency thing for me - but Bearded eats a lot of yogurt and he's losing weight too.

    Bored at work

Djmohr I'm sorry you are having pain. A three level cervical fusion is tough. I hope you don't need any more surgery either. Kinda - you are right I've got no excuse! I am HEALTHY!!! (No cervical fusions, I can walk with pretty much no pain.....my once in a while foot pain isn't going to get me down). I've got "first world weight loss problems"!!! I will get out of my rut. I am going to fire up the treadmill tomorrow night. Had to pick up my car from the shop tonight and then out for my mom's birthday. I will post my mileage tomorrow night ???? that way I'll be accountable. Thank you both!

    Gained 2 freaking pounds!

Where are you in your monthly cycle? No matter what, I gain weight every four weeks like clock work. It's maddening, but I know it'll come off. Could it be that? Sometimes when I am constipated I drink some extra protein and it helps me go- odd but effective. MOM, miralax, and every stool softener and laxitive out there has no effect on me either :/ good luck!
