    Dr. Gerardo Carcamo - Impressed

i had my lap band done by dr c in 2004 but i live in austin and have switched surgeons now to get a sleeve revision. he put the band in the wrong place then poked holes in my port tube. i had to have two revision surgeries. he was very hard on me for failing to keep my weight off even though it was because he unfilled my band and refused to fill it which is why i'm switching. he called me cow, a failure and many other awful things. the worst thing was the day before my knee replacement with another surgeon he said i would die on the table. my orthopedist was furious. dr is a great surgeon and did try to help me but his bedside manner in my case was terrible
  2. Wow. Almost nothing in this post is true. Sleeves are a lot more popular now, yes, but they are not "almost always" done over bypass, not even close. The data I found from the ASMBS indicates that the rate of bypass has remained relatively stable, while surgeons are performing far more VSG procedures instead of bands since 2011. Nothing I have read attributes the development of marginal ulcers in RNY patients to the bypass of the pyloric valve. According to Dr. Matthew Weiner, RNY patients rarely have a serious, life-altering malnutrition of any kind. When they do, it's usually iron. Any massive weight loss, surgical or otherwise, can induce hair loss. It's almost always temporary and usually returns by the 1-year mark. Plenty of VSG patients also experience hair loss. According to my surgeon, only 25% of RNY patients get dumping and sugar is not always the trigger. Additionally, over time the intestines usually adapt and incidence of dumping is greatly reduced. RNY has averages of 70-77% excess weight loss at 2 years with VSG at 68-70%. Big difference? No. Difference? Yes. The sleeve has plenty of downsides including greater risk of leaking (much longer staple line), complications like kinks, 33% chance to develop acid reflux or GERD, higher rate of revision, slower weight loss, lower AVERAGE percent of excess weight lost, as well as all the regular issues like hair loss, dehydration, etc.
  3. I know im having mixed emotions too. I am not good with pain. I dont like pain meds maybe the liquid iv one lol. The one I will take at home I dont care for too much. I will ask him in the morning if he would switch me. Actually I had the bypass on July 17. Revision was on July 19. He will look to discharge me tomorrow after my primary doctor sees me iamready4this
  4. Looking for someone who's had a revision RNY to be beri friends with. Aka_ET HW-220 Pre-op 194.3 RNY SD June 16th 2017 CW-180 GW-140 HT 5' 3" [emoji120][emoji878][emoji1272] "You may see me struggle but you will never see me quit"
  5. A revision? Ugh! Sorry to hear that but at least they caught it while you were still in the hospital ya know? I can barely drink anything. It's horrible for me right now. I'm having so many mixed emotions but I know in a week or two I'll feel so much better. You hang in there too! When did you get sleeved?
  6. I feel you. I had a complication and he had to do a revision. I was suppose to go home yesterday but it will be tomorrow or saturday. Im glad that you are home. Hang in there. It is hard in this beginning iamready4this

    Conversion- Worth it?

Banded in 2011, lost 118 lbs. Had heartburn really bad, so I had emergency surgery to have it removed in 2015. Gained about 70 lbs back. Had a revision to bypass in March of 2016 and I am down 110 lbs from my highest. 120 lbs @ 4'10 1/2". I've lost almost as much as I weigh. I had a few complications at the beginning, but it has all worked out and it was well worth it. It's a totally different feel for fullness. I used to get the shoulder pain when I was full. This is like a regular full feeling. "Satisfied" with small amounts. Best decision. Sent from my Z981 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Gastric sleeve left side pain

I had a ct scan and it looks like possibly a piece of the old band was left behind. Waiting on a second opinion. I'm 10 weeks out. Never had this pain with the band. Lap band 2009 Sw 200/lw 161 Sleeve revision 17 May/17 Sw 217 CW 198.8
  9. Hello everyone, so glad to have found this forum. Am 2 weeks post Op and in general, my recovery is excellent. However, am having problems drinking liquids!! I manage about 1 glass of water in 2-3 hours.. Really trying hard but it dies nit work too well. I am introducing natural coconut water, no sugar, and this goes a bit better. But still, 250 ml of it takes a whole day.. So far I lost 16 pounds, quite happy with it. My bowels work every two days, which I find quite OK. I am basically here to get some support for the long road ahead. Specially with the drinking, as I understand (and also according to my surgeon) that this is the most crucial part. Thanks a lot in advance and much success to us all!! Sent from my D6603 using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. Thank you for your concern. He had to do a revision to correct a narrowing. He explained it but i was in so much pain my dad probably understood what he said because I was in my pain. It went well he actually drained out everything so now i dont have to have a drain bottle. I have to stay until saturday or so and start from the beginning. I am on two types of anti biotics also. They have been very nice here. iamready4this

    Switching to Aetna for Approval?

Hi all, I had the lap band for 13 years (two of them, actually, and two additional surgeries to correct constant mechanical failure). BCBS denied me twice to revise to the sleeve due to the one surgery per lifetime limit. I had the band removed and I still want the Sleeve. I am planning to enroll in Aetna through my company. I confirmed the offered plans include one Bariatric surgery per lifetime. Does anyone have experience with this scenario - could they deny me based on previous bariatric surgeries with another company? My BMI is 41.
  12. [emoji20]I went from doing well to doing poorly all within a few hours! All of a sudden I couldnt hold down my liquids & last night was a terrible night because of the pain. My surgeon suspected a narrowing and so gave me a ct scan and that was the problem. I had my ct scan at 1pm and a revision surgery an hour later. iamready4this

    Sleeve vs RNY

This is not true. They remove the excess stomach and they remove the pyloric valve. It is not possible to reverse it. You can't recreate a pyloric valve... The sleeve also does not touch your intestines which RNY does. The sleevers can also get a revision into DS if it's ever needed. Only the band and balloon are fully reversible. Do I start over? Again?

Thanks for sharing this. I'm thinking about doing a revision because I have reflux so bad but also because I'm slowly gaining. I too am a slow loser and I'm very frustrated.

Who had revsion more than 4 years ago?

I am 3 years and 4 months post op so not quite 4 years yet. My situation is probably different from most people. I had a severe spine injury before the revision surgery. I can't exercise very much to help burn calories. So now I have leveled off. I haven't lost any weight in over a year but I haven't gained any either. I eat everyday until I'm full. I don't deprive myself of any food that I want. Breakfast is usually a small amount of cereal with fruit in it, or a bowl of watermelon or some other tasty fruit, or sometimes I skip the food, and drink something with protein. Or I'll have bacon and eggs and toast. Or French toast with butter and syrup. During the day I'll snack on vegetables or cheese or fruit or almonds. Maybe half a sandwich. I can eat a small portion of steak and about a quarter of a baked potato with butter and sour cream and a couple spears of asparagus. I love seafood. Any food that I want. The good thing is that I can't eat very much of it. I don't feel any discomfort unless I eat too much then there is a nausea kind of sick feeling and some pain from my abdomen for about a half hour until some of the food digests then I feel normal again, so I don't overeat anymore. I don't like that feeling. I still eat the same portion size but sometimes I still feel hungry after the meal so I will drink some water and that stops the hunger immediately. So far I haven't had any issues with the surgery. I had a very painful post-op recovery for about a week but now my stomach feels good. I haven't been to the weight loss surgeon for 2 years, but I do see my other gastroenterologist regularly for other problems, and he has checked me out through an upper GI endoscopy twice since the revision, and says everything looks fine. I think differently about food. Socializing with family and friends used to be a whole lot of eating. Now it's more talking and sipping on a beverage. Wine or Tea and even a margarita or a Jack and Coke. This surgery is dangerous. You need to really think about it and make sure it's right for you. I'm glad that I had it but I really wish that I could have solved the problem on my own. I know that there are quite a few people that have had a nightmare experience with this and I feel bad for them, but for me it has turned out very positive so far. I will need to have upper endoscopy's every 3 years for the rest of my life. Not because of this revision but for something else. My stomach acid has an effect on my other problem so this surgery has helped with that also. I also have to take a nexium pill everyday for the rest of my life. These are issues that I already had prior to the sleeve surgery, and were considered co-morbidity problems that were the main reasons for my insurance company approving the revision. Good luck to you.
  16. Has anyone had a sleeve to bypass revision? I have reflux really bad and am told that will help. I had surgery done 3.5 years ago, unfortunately in the last 6 months I have also started gaining weight. Can I expect to lose weight if I do this? Also trying to figure out how to get insurance to pay as it is to relieve the reflux, weight loss is secondary.

    Do I start over? Again?

I had the sleeve done in Feb 2012 and never lost enough weight either! On May 30 I had a revision to ByPass. On the sleeve, I went up and down, highest weight was 252 when I had the sleeve (I am 5 ft 4 in so I am morbidly obese too!)....I could never lose enough to be in "onederland", lowest I got down to was about 212lbs.....over the years my weight went mostly up.....even though I couldn't eat very much at once, I tended to graze.....got up to 242 lbs and decided to get the bypass done. I had to self-pay my sleeve surgery. With my bypass, I also had a hernia repair so my ins covered a good part of the bypass surgery costs. I have lost 20 lbs.....and I started exercising again about 4-5 days week. "Starting over" and doing the bypass is a personal choice.....I felt I had to do it......I am a very slow loser....but I feel in a year from now that I will have a good success story to report! Good Luck with your decision! Melody
  18. Day 6 and I'm feeling human again. Man what a ROUGH recovery. Between the complications with my surgery/revision, traveling 14 hours to get home, and having a massive cold and horrific cough/bronchitis.. I really wasn't sure how much more I could take. I'm so much better today. I'm struggling with fluids still though. I'm so full of mucus and phlegm that I literally feel like I'm STUFFED and it's hard to sip on to of that. That'll be my focus today. And as of this morning I'm down to my SW 219. For those of you with a band and think it's fine, that what I was thinking too.. I had ZERO symptoms of any problems.. my sleeve took 5 hours because of how bad my scar tissue..
  19. No fast food for me either. Being from Texas my "weakness" was sweet tea! I drank it every day. Now I am drinking unsweet tea or with splenda in it. Even though I have had the ByPass, I have not had issues with "dumping" due to sweets....(I ate a cookie to see if it would effect me and it didn't). My food intake is restricted, but not as much as I wish it would be! I had a revision from sleeve to bypass and there is no difference in my food restriction as far as I can tell. My problem has always been eating when I am not hungry (or grazing) and this is something I need to work on or I will not have a successful weight loss.

5 months Sleeve to MGB post-op pic

Thank you! I was sleeved in July of 2010, so I had my sleeve for 6 1/2 years before I got a revision. Many people do it sooner, but I held it off for as long as I could because I didn't want to have another surgery. Now, I wish I would have done it sooner.

5 months Sleeve to MGB post-op pic

MGB is short for Mini-Gastric Bypass. Revision weight loss surgery is a surgical procedure that is performed on patients who have already undergone a form of bariatric surgery, and have either had complications from such surgery or have not successfully achieved significant weight loss results from the initial surgery.

Best WLS for my weight? Process?

I was just going to suggest you check out the duodenal switch and saw Life Under Construction beat me to it. It's a good option for you to check out. Most patients stop their diabetes medication within the first month. I'm six weeks post-op from the DS (revision after the lap-band), and it's been a good choice for me. While I never had diabetes, the weight has steadily dropped off, unlike when I had the lap-band. I looked at all of the options and became well educated on the life time commitment before I decided which surgery had the best long-term results and lifestyle I could live with. Wishing you the best.
  24. Did you have to wait after having the band removed to get the sleeve..I have to get a revision done.
