My name is Maren and I live in Alabama. I'm 34, with a high weight of 293 and a BMI of 47 (starting). I have BCBS and am in my third month of the 6 month supervised weight loss. My doc has me doing a controlled carb diet, mostly to get me in the mindset of putting protein first and carbs last for my post-surgery lifestyle and I'm down to 278 after only a few weeks of *really* trying. Believe me, I've done the calculations and know that to be safe in terms of insurance coverage, I shouldn't get below 260. I think I'll have to add back in a few carbs over the next few months and then once I'm approved, get back on track. That's sad, considering I've been morbidly obese for about a decade, but I'll play the games just like everyone else. For a long time I've thought casually about surgery, but I haven't gotten serious until recently. I actually don't have any major health concerns yet but I've had three miscarriages (no successful pregnancies) and even though there is no clear reason why weight would have anything to do with it, my OB specialist recommended I put off any more attempts until I lose weight. My doctor (primary) and my OB-GYN think I should do the full bypass because of my weight, but I have thought a lot about it and think I prefer the band. I'll hold off final decision until I talk with my surgeon, but in the meantime I'll be preparing for the LapBand procedure. I look forward to learning from you all and journeying with you. -Maren

You get your fills from the doc who did your surgery. When you see that they have to travel it is becasue most of us went to Mexico and live elsewhere so we travel back to Mexico for our fills. As far as when you get your fills , everyone is so different. I have had 2 fills in 5 months. You need a fill when you have not lost any weight in 3 consecutive weeks (following all the bandster rules) Every ones fill level is different also. And going in for an unfill only happens when you are filled to tight.

Struggling to Eat
MsVictorious1020 replied to MsVictorious1020's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm trying to avoid stalls by keeping my calorie and protein intake up. I eat a lot of the same things. I drink about 48 oz a day. I exercise 4-5 times a week cardio. I avoid carbs like the plague. I don't get sick/throw up but eating is such a chore. And I do get nauseous sometimes from the shakes. -
6 days till surgery 4 days to final weigh in two week diet I'm still going strong! But getting tired of the same protein shake

So I finally realized I've put my body, image, and health through hell. I've decided the only thing that can help is the band. I've tried diets and gyms, and they worked, but I always gained double the weight back. So How did everyone tell their co-workers and family that they decided to have the surgery? I think because I'm only 23 (turning this week) I think everyone is going to think this is mainly cosmetic and wont take me serious. How did everyone else manage negativity? Thanks Jessica

August All Stars Easter Challenge! End, wk 6 (3/29/09)
fleminld replied to heartfire's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
start: 219 now: 210 goal: 209 My weight goes up and down a pound or 2 then drops a couple pounds all of a sudden. I have been going to the gym 5-6 days a week. Its a daily battle to go still, but have to admit it feels good to be able to actually go and be able physically to use the equipment for a good amount of time. -

I'll never make my goal! Gained the 2 lb I lost last week. Poooo! -
I am in the approval process with my insurance right now. As for the surgery date, it depends if you are going through insurance or are self pay. I just finished all of my testing and the 3 month multi discipline needed for aetna on Monday. My surgeon's office said that it takes about a week for them to file then up to 30 days to get a response from the insurance company. I was told to expect to take off 2 weeks after my surgery. The emotions change daily for me. Nervous, excited and even a little overwhelmed at times. This forum is the best thing in the world for us newbies. Good luck!!!

Question for those who lost quickly
Foxbins replied to Jensharley's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If your surgery is July 18, you should be right around my surgery weight (232) by then. I have been low-carbing and exercising. I mean really low carb, under 30 a day. I go swimming for 45 minutes twice a week and run for 30 minutes 3 times a week. I am 56, post-menopausal, and have hypothyroidism, so you should be able to do AT LEAST as well as I have, and I expect you'd do better. I had a knee injury that restricted movement in May and the scale showed it--only 4 lbs for the month. Good luck, and Aruba is beautiful! Go diving or snorkeling! -
Wow - what a story. It seems like some people have a easier time than others. I think you should find different doctors, I know you are in a remote location but you really should not be feeling this sick. My surgery was on April 9th so I am a week ahead of you. I have tried different foods and I am learning what I can and can't eat right now. I thought I had stricture at some point because I was getting very sick after eating. Then I realized that I was not chewing my food like a million times. Once I corrected how I chewed my food I never got sick since. I hope you get better and hopefully get a different docotr. Good Luck !!!

Step away from the scale......get healthy......forget about a number that doesn't mean much. When you begin working out or upping the intensity, your body retains Water. Keep doing what you're doing and don't weigh yourself for 3 weeks. See what happens. Good luck!

I have just started the mushie or soft food stage and I would live to hear what you really liked during this stage. I will be on it for four weeks.
-
I just started mushies this week and as we all have learned on this site, all dieticians and dr's seem to recommend totally different diets. I met with my dietician on Tuesday and they gave me lists of menus to use as a guide. Last night I had a 1/4 of a all wheat tortilla with shredded cheese and taco seasoned burger and it was delish! I hated that I was full! My head wanted more! Lol. I then used same wheat tortillas for a wrap today of low fat deli meat, shredded cheese, very light mayo and rolled it up and cut in half and had half for lunch. Why had I never tried wheat tortillas before? I think they may be better than white ones! Lol. Tonight i have wheat flat bread or some piece of bread that I am going to make mini pizzas on for the whole family. I also had chicken one night with a boiled potato and a 2 ounce burger with tater tots one night. all good and none seem to bother me. I havent made it over 600 calories a day yet though but thats okay I think. Lol. The only things she really advised against at this stage was the white bread and pasta, an obvious, were things that are hard like uncooked veggies, salads and I'm sure nuts but i dont think she said those. July 5 I can eat pretty much eat anything that is healthy is the plan.

Victoria I think that depends on the individual. My firstfill took a week to kick in but my 2nd fill I felt instantly. Take it slow..

CANADIAN WOMEN Three men were sitting together bragging about how they had given their new wives duties. Garry had married a woman from the U.S. and bragged that he had told his wife she was going to do all the dishes and housecleaning that needed done at their house. He said that it took a couple of days but on the third day he came home to a clean house and the dishes were all washed and put away. Jimmy had married a woman from Australia. He bragged that he had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes, and the cooking. He told them that the first day he didn't see any results, but the next day it was better. By the third day, his house was clean, the dishes were done, and he had a huge dinner on the table. The third man had married a Canadian girl. He boasted that he told her that her duties were to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day, most of the swelling had gone and he could see a little out of his left eye. Enough to fix himself a bite to eat, load the dishwasher, see the dials on the washing machine and start the lawn mower.

Hi Donna D!

I am doing GRRRRReat! I have just started on the puree stage. I am happy to be having a few more choices on my menu... lol although it sure is odd to be eating muck! So far I think I am healing well I still have a few steri strips hanging on and I will just let them do their thing. They don't bother me and no one else sees them.

Dr Cobourn warned me that I may not lose any weight and could possibly gained during this phase so I am surprised to have lost 6 lbs since surgery. That doesn't mean that I won't gain though... I still have a few weeks to go before grown up food -=winks=- I think I am really looking forward to a peice of toast! I want some crunch!

How are you feeling now that you have had your first fill?

A-MAY-zing Bandits Monthly Exercise/Water Challenge
legster replied to NimbleBean's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm sorry I neglected to post in last month's thread. I did meet the challenge for July though! :-) And I intend to do even more this month by adding some time in the sauna 5-6 days a week. At my gym it's an extra charge by the month (fancy infrared sauna) so I'm going to make sure I get my money's worth! It looks like everyone did great in July!! Woohoooooo! -
Hello, I havent been banded yet, BUT I know the situation about the your ex cheating. I am getting banded on the 24th of next month. My soon to be ex husband cheated on me. It hurt, and I JUST found out about getting my band date. I CANT WAIT until he sees me after surgery. The look on his face alone will be worth gold when he sees what he gave up simply to have not one, not two but THREE affairs on me. Yeah I only stayed because of the kids, but now that I am getting this surgery and will e losing this weight, Im sure God will put the right man in my life, that will love me for me, and love my kids possibly as his own. Let me know when you see him, and what the look on his face will be.. :tt2:

A-MAY-zing Bandits Monthly Exercise/Water Challenge
NimbleBean posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thanks to MetalBand for getting us going in July! Now here we are, a few days into August and I thought I would start a new thread for our monthly Exercise & Water Challenge. I figure we can just keep adding to this thread for each month. For each month set your own goal, with a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise at least 20 days of the month. Also, don't forget to get in at least 64 oz. of water each and every day! I've already got three days of exercise and water under my belt. For me, it's been easier to get in the exercise than it has been to get in the water! Never thought that would be the case! I know there won't be tons of posts here, but it's great to see folks exercise tickers changing on the other threads! Good luck to all of us! Margaret -
I got my fitbit a week ago. I did some research about it before buying. In several studies the fitbit had an almost perfect score in calculating your steps. Best score for heartbeat accuracy. Best place to wear it is 1 to 2 fingers width ABOVE your WRIST bone. Not to tightly or will hinder accuracy. For me it took some getting use to wearing it higher up on my arm. I also have to check if the fitbit has slid down to my wrist and is loosely turning. I started wearing a bracelet under fitbit and am now comfortably wearing fitbit above wrist bone. Overall the Fitbit Charge 2 (which is the model I have) scored the highest out of all other wrist trackers. I wear a 7 1/4 bracelet. I was going to get the small band but got the large one because of placement above wrist. I got the plum color and love it. Goes with everything. The sales person at best buy suggested I try Amazon to buy additional bands. For a "fitbit" brand name costs around a $100 . (Fitbit hasn't come out with additional band colors for the charge 2 yet) On amazon you can by bands that will work with fitbit products. For charge 2 you can get 10 colors for 39.99 Merry Christmas to me. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T337A using the BariatricPal App

How Much Willpower Is Involved
LisaBC replied to newbe's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on day 8 of a two week pre-op diet. It does get easier as the days pass. It's almost like your body does an about face knowing that it can and will survive on the diet. The first 3 days I thought I was going to starve and die, but stick with it, the hunger pains will subside. Stay strong and don't watch the food Network whatever you do! you can do this! keep your eye on the prize! -
New with questions for future
kelreid3 replied to JuneR's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Every one is different June I have no problem with Popcorn..most of it is a personal trial issue you need to see what you can tolerate or not...also every fill changes things a bit.... the ultimate goal is to give you maximun restriction without causing pain or vomiting. My third fill was the trick I have had a fourth 1cc and now I'm taking three months until my next visit. God Bless, Ken -
Approved!! I went in, was re-weighed and he resubmitted. I was approved about a week later. Excited but nervous too! Surgery is scheduled December 4th, pre-op Nov 20th.

Hello everyone! I am new here I'm currently battling with BCBS of IL. I had my surgical consultation Sept 13th and had a BMI of 39.93 on that day. My plan denied as my BMI wasn't 40 - one more pound and it would have been 40! Anything under 40 requires 2 co-morbid conditions which I don't have. I am now going in for a 2nd consult with him October 25th to be weighed again so he can submit an appeal. He suggested I wait a bit so it wouldn't seem as though I was gaining weight on purpose, however we are talking about ONE POUND here. Weight fluctuates daily, weekly....etc. I have now gained 5 lbs in 4 weeks - is that bad? Should I try to make it more like 1-3 lbs? This is an awful situation to be in.
