    August surgery buddies!

One Month Follow-up I was sure I would get scolded for not doing better - but both the dietician and the surgeon are pleased with my progress. My BP was super low - could be mild dehydration, could need to transition off my BP meds - my extended period (or a combination of all three). I see my PCP Monday so hopefully we can work on that. I’m the meantime, my focus is hydration, work on bumping my protein and calories and increase my activity as I am able. I wanted to have lost more by now but both the surgeon and dietitian reinforced: I’m healing, I’ve had some added challenges and I’m doing well - stay on plan and track and things will keep progressing. The surgeon, who I expected to be the hardest on me, was very encouraging.
  2. Does anyone have experience getting cleared for surgery with a recent history of binge eating disorder? Or know what the official definition of remission is? My bariatric program reached out to my psychiatrist, who apparently said I'm not a candidate for WLS because of a history of BED that's in "partial remission". During our last meeting a few months ago, I was still having small binges about once a week. Since then, I binge less than once a week (a BED diagnosis requires binging at least once a week for at least 3 months) and my binges are getting smaller and smaller over time. I haven't received any notice from my bariatric program or my psychiatrist (I found this out by reading a chart note about the phone call between the two), so I'm not really sure what I should be doing. (Other than the obvious of not binging and continuing to work on my diet and exercise behaviors, like I was doing anyway.)
  3. Hi everyone I have just joined this group and hope to get some advice! I am booking my VSG for April 2023 (very excited) but just wanted general advice and tips on how to prepare mentally/physically before and how people felt after the surgery. I am currently a student at university and have planned to have this done during a 3 week break... i am hoping this is enough time to recover enough to start classes again. Any advice or tips would be appreciated! Excited to start my journey

    I tried real food

Well I spoke to the Dietitian last night and there are things I am allowed that I haven' been having eg scrambled egg , Oatabix , Cottage Pie , mashed banana and then 2 weeks later bread sticks , crackers , hummus , bran flakes etc so I have got a lot more variety .She ok'd the cottage cheese and the mashed tuna for clarity .It's so nice not to just be on shakes and soup !

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )

I made the mistake of having a breakfast burrito (or 1/3 of one) from WaWa about a two weeks after surgery...bad idea! That being said, I have reincorporated small amounts of straight up carbs. I have had Mac & Cheese, spaghetti, pasta, etc., but only small servings (like we're talking 1/4 cup or less). So far I haven't really had any problems so far.
  6. I'm a little more than two weeks post-op, and my hunger is close to non-existent. I jokingly believe they removed my entire stomach instead of 80% of it! Anyways, this may sound sacrilegious, but I'm not sure I want to go my entire life without experiencing hunger. Any of you seasoned veterans have any insight if my hunger will return whether it be a few months or a year or longer. Also the few times I've nibbled on foods ( admittedly I probably shouldn't have because I'm not at that stage of my recovery) they taste so drastically different basically a lot more bland and less tasteful. I've read a few times how people are so hungry after gastric sleeve and I'm having the opposite effect and it's to an extreme that I would not have anticipated. My second week after surgery I lost 11 pounds. Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Food

I bought toddler silverware when I was first post op. It made meals seem easier and I was able to spend more time enjoying it over just a couple of bigger bites. And I agree it’s likely a stall. Just keep going and it’ll get easier as time goes on.
  8. I had my two week follow up today. 23 lbs lost. Staples removed. Everything is looking good. They did permit me to move on to soft foods a day early, so today I had that glorious fried egg that I’ve been craving. I also had about half a cup of cottage cheese, and I made Ricotta bake and had about half a cup of it. Tomorrow I’m making some refried beans with red sauce and cheddar…like Taco Bell used to make. I may survivor this after all. 😂

    CrossFit and carbs?

This is probably best answered by your dietician because yes, plans are so different. Your dietician should advise what’s best for you taking into account your physical & caloric needs, your dietary requirements & restrictions, etc. without compromising your weight loss. I was never given carb limits only told low carb & only low processed whole & multi grains (traditional rolled oats for breakfast 3 or 4 days a week was my only source beside the carbs in vegetables). But then I’m not an exerciser. 🙂

    Food

Hi, For the first 8 weeks my doctors have only 2-4 teaspoons of food for each meal. And only 3 meals per day. After that it is 1/4 cup per meal 3xs a day. My doctors also advise to take miralax to make sure I don’t get constipated. My friend hit a stahl and turned out it was gas and constipation. Check in with your weight loss team!

    CrossFit and carbs?

Hello all, I’m 3 1/2 months post RNY. I’ve been doing CrossFit for 15 months now. Now that I’m well past surgery and back into normal exercise I am having trouble finding any consistent advice on carb intake. My program focuses on proteins and fluids and does recommend around 100g of carbs or more once on maintenance. I’m not there yet but wondering what kind of carb intake do you all get doing fairly intense exercise like running, HIIT, CrossFit etc? I don’t want to stall because of too little or take in too much and stall as well. I’m still building muscle or at least think so and I know I can get too little and make my body just eat away muscle tissue too.

    September surgery buddies!!

Believe it or not that 2 week liquid diet helped me prepare for after surgery. I’m 2 days post op….. in pain but I’m doing well over all. 2oz of protein every hour on the hour and water or tea every 15 minutes. Is not an easy task… I feel full constantly but I have to get that protein and water in… you’ve got this !

    Before and After Pics

I have the same starting and goal stat (I'm 2.5 weeks post op and "only" down 15lbs so far) congratulations and thank you so much for sharing!

    Food Before and After Photos

Meals the past week or so. I think I’m gonna give up on the lotus root for a bit as it’s never as soft as I want and the glaze it’s really glaze-y. And those meatball looking things are really squid balls. The sheet pan pancakes have become a staple with various mix-ins (these were pumpkin spice latte ones).
  15. Hello, I’m currently on the pre op diet. At the start of the second week I began having severe back and neck pain that’s shoots up to the back of my head. Has anyone had this issue? I thought maybe it’s the lack of electrolytes. I have been drinking more than enough water. At this point I’m so disappointed because I had been exercising and losing that pre surgery weight. Now I’m almost immobile and I’m less than a week from surgery!

    September surgery buddies!!

Hi. New here too. First post and everything. Sad I'm only finding this now but glad to be here. 2 weeks from today is the big day! Getting very excited. I started the liquid diet a little early because I am stubborn and I wanted to trick myself into thinking it's all my idea. HAHA First day or 2 was brutal... it's getting easier (besides the headache). Best of luck to the Bariatric Pal class of Sept 2022!

    August surgery buddies!

Remember not just about weight loss… but the other benefits too! I did notice when installed - I upped my protein and then I started losing again. I am 6wks out from surgery and had the same type of stall the first month. Give your body time to heal! You just had surgery and when it’s ready, changes will happen! Ps I’m supposed to get 80g protein a day… that’s why I mentioned maybe upping your protein. But always check in with your dr and or nutritionist! Good luck ☺️
  18. I had the gastric sleeve with Dr ceaser elenes. The surgery itself was 1000/10. Didn't feel any pain or experience any issues. Excepted the fact that I woke up speaking Spanish....😂😂😂. Followed the after diet for the first 3 months and lost 80lbs. Surgery date. June 1,2022 Price $3000 Travel $700 (from Miami to mexicali,Mexico). Hw 384lb Surgery 372lb Currently weight 291. Pros: The price extremely affordable. Had been getting dicked around by my insurnace for 3 years. The care (bedside manner) of the doctor. Getting a new lease on life(not to sound corny). No more early morning back pain. sleep apnea. Blood pressure meds. Cons. As with any out of the country surgery lack of a follow up. After the first three months your done no more care. You are on your own... kinda scary. But do I regret my decision hell No. A great price Great doctor Great facilities. I give it a rating of 9/10.

    August surgery buddies!

Yes to this! I lost every day the first week and now I am just about a month out and have only lost 1 more pound. I see my doctor at the end of the month and I'm afraid they are going to think I'm not following the diet. I am. I have a protein shake for breakfast, yogurt for lunch and an egg for dinner. I was told not to add any more protein shakes because those count as meals and I'll have too many meals if I do that. I am honestly sort of regretting the surgery a bit since I'm barely eating but not losing any weight. I could have just had the hiatal hernia surgery if I wasn't going to lose weight. I feel like I've permanently altered my insides for nothing. It has been very frustrating for me. A friend of mine had surgery and has lost over 100 lbs in 5 months and she has even told me that sometimes she cheats. I am happy for her, but frustrated at my lack of losing.

    Finally

First of many, many stalls you will see over the next year or so. It is a process...trust the process and you will be fine.
  21. August surgery buddies!

I lost my first week and then it just stopped at week 2. I am not at almost a month and am finally losing again. Everyone stalls. And a lot of people stall in the first month while your body is adjusting, try upping your calories a little to kick it. Best advice, DO NOT WEIGH YOURSELF DAILY. You will torture yourself with the up and down. I am doing once a week right now, and might switch to once a month.

    Abdominal Binder

My surgeon does not use them but I did choose to wear a compression tank top (sort of like shapewear) for the first week or so post-op. Nothing super tight, just enough to help me feel comfy.

    August 24!

Three weeks today! Still dealing with the abdomen drain hole not fully closed, left arm numbness and swelling. The swelling is on my forearm so I kind of look like popeye especially since my upper arm is smaller now. Speaking of swelling, still super swollen especially as the day goes on. I knew this happened post op but I don’t think I really understood how much swelling was happening or how uncomfortable it was. Also hard to see real results when you’re puffed up like a water balloon. Not having pants fit was kind of alarming for me- I know it’s probably just the swelling but I can’t help but be worried that I’m bigger now.
