  1. Hey guys, I'll be going next Thursday for a revision to gastric bypass due to reflux, and I'm also having my gallbladder removed. Has anyone had the revision from Sleeve to bypass for reflux? How was it afterwards? Did you have to start your diet stages all over again? And also even though it's not for a weight loss reason, will you still lose weight ?
  2. I have surgery in the morning feeling a bit nervous
  3. makemyownluck

what is your ht/wt and clothing size?

When I was at my lowest weight, I used to LOVE laying down and feeling my hips and rib bones, lol. Right now, I'm only about 20 lbs heavier than my lowest weight, it's amazing how that 20lbs makes it harder to feel those bones! Looking forward to those NSVs again after my revision.

Any June 13th buddies out there??

Wow. You look amazing. I had a revision from a Vertical banded gastroplasty that I had 20 years ago to a RNY on June 16th. I'm slowly losing weight. I'm kind of disappointed. But I'm feeling better from my severe GURD. Grateful for that. My email is aka_et@me.com you can find me on FB. Looking forward to getting to know you.
  5. Hello everyone, I'm not new to the lap band process. My initial surgery was in 2007, (250 lbs). First three years I did well. 2010 There was a slippage of the band. Revision performed and band replaced. Unfortunately this band not working as well as the first one. Embraced to see my doctor cause I gained 40 lbs back. She ran a few test to make sure everything was good. We find my esaphagus was dilated. Which meant emptying my band to allow this to heal. Finally in Jan 2017 I was good to start adjusting the band. I get adjusted by our NP for a few days I felt restricted and then nothing. After a few months I see the surgeon who decided to do X-ray under fluoroscopy.. I have a leak.. surgery is scheduled for Friday 7/28/17, which means I'm restarting my journey. Including my liquid diet tomorrow..😃
  6. There are lots of stories on the band to sleeve forum https://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/394-band-to-gastric-sleeve-revisions/
  7. Thank you all so much! I am doing sit ups and cardio as well as incorporating some weight training to hopefully avoid alot of loose skin. If any of you have any additional tips on that they are appreciated! I believe my success is because my surgeon did my sleeve the right way to begin with. I see many people that have to have revision soon after surgery because they plateau quick. That, based on my research is due to the sleeve being done too loosely to begin with Sent from my SM-G935U using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. My surgery is scheduled for 8/30. I've been on vacation for about 11 days and still have 7 to go. I figured a longer vacation with my family would be just what I need before I undergo this big change. I had my lap band removed after 12 years on 4/26 and had to heal for 3 months before having the conversion surgery. During my pre op appointment, my surgeon went over the risks and benefits of the surgery and there was on thing that he said that hit me in the head and now has my questioning if I'm making a mistake. Apparently band to sleeve conversion patients tend to have less overall weight loss, sometimes as low as 40-50% less, than us non-banders. On top of this, there's like a greater than 50% chance of developing medication resistant GERD, even if you've never had it, and that may have cause to have another revision to RNY or DS in the not so distant future. I've asked this question before and didn't get any answers, so I'll try again now because I'm running out of time to change my mind. Can you please share your positive/negative band to sleeve conversion stories with me. Can you include your age, surgery weight, current weight, goal weight and length of time since you've had surgery. I'm very nervous that I may not be making the right decision and just need some positive reinforcement stories, please. Thank you in advance! Amy

Lisa I'm so sorry. What an ordeal. If it were me I'd revise. Not sure whether sleeve or rny but like Liz said, take time to decide.
  11. How the heck do I know what sleevers end up looking like? I never met one. Lol. Actually, I meant to add that the bypass patients that are over 2 years out look good and normal, so that sickly look does seem to go away over time. Temporary, like the hair loss. Weight loss, although nice, is not my biggest concern. It's health. The bypass surgery will help the sickest of people to become healthier, but the same way that it is more powerful for them, it may be too powerful for a less-sick group. I appreciate the feedback about how my post came across.. I'm not trying to scare tactic anyone, I just like for people to weigh all their options. A good friend got the band because she thought her only other choice was the bypass, and that was more surgery than she wanted. She might have been a good candidate for the sleeve. There are two major problems with the sleeve that isn't as much with bypasses. GERD and leaks. Both tend to show up within the first few months. Many that get severe gerd go on to revise to bypass. Leaks can be a real nightmare, fortunately they are relatively rare. The bypass tends to have similar numbers of complications near the surgery, but more that show up later down the line. As I said, more severe procedure for the sicker people. The other thing to keep in mind is bypasses have been around a while. The sleeve is relatively new, so we don't know what will happen in 20 years... for all we know, they may be an unsustainable fad like the lap band. You want scare tactics? Ask me about DSs! Lol!
  12. I chose Bypass because in the end I wanted this surgery to be one and done. At first I was dead set on the sleeve but after reading hundreds of experiences on these and other boards, I decided to go with my surgeon's preference and have the bypass. He suggested it because he felt I would lose more weight than with the sleeve. I also didn't want to develop GERD after the sleeve and have to have a revision later. I don't feel the malabsortion is a big deal as long as I take my vitamins and iron as directed. My labs have been great so far.
  13. Hi everyone! I used to be much more active on this board about 5-6 years ago when I had my sleeve. I am returning in hopes for the same support, insight and information I got back then relating to my current circumstances. I have a sleeve, it was done in May 2013. At that time, my high weight was 460, I lost about 150, getting to my "low" of 310 in about a year. Things were going well, and then I unexpectedly got pregnant in September in 2014. During my pregnancy and post partum time, I gained back about 60 lbs. I did a reset diet and started losing weight - from August of last year to January, I lost about 40 of the 60 lbs I gained. I felt like I was in control again, after feeling so out of control since I was pregnant! Then, the unexpected happened. In January, I went to the ER with severe chest pains. It was intense and I had a hard time breathing - the pain was on my right side, otherwise I would have thought I was having a heart attack. I was admitted, and after lots of testing, I was determined to have pneumonia, and another infection in the lining of my right lung. I had a bedside aspiration that took 2 LITERS of fluid from my lungs. It was not enough. I was prepped for surgery, a thoracotomy (which, if you don't know, is one of the most painful surgeries you can have!). During the surgery, I aspirated, surgery had to abruptly end before treating me. I was on a ventilator, in ICU, for several days. A second surgery was needed, I had a chest tube, two tubes coming out of my right ribs. I went into septic shock. My kidneys shut down and I had dialysis. I had terrible dreams while being sedated, that I was dying and would never see my son again... it was the worst time in my life. I'm grateful to have survived it. The underlying cause of this episode is achalasia. My esophagus is not swallowing correctly, the sphincter at the bottom of my esophagus into my stomach is closed tight and doesn't open correctly to empty food into my stomach. I likely aspirated food and/or fluid into my lungs, which lead to the nearly fatal infection I suffered in January. This condition is rare, and the causes are not known. There is a thought that there is an underlying autoimmune issue that causes it. The treatment is to open that sphincter with a Heller myotomy. Normally, people have this myotomy (or a similar procedure with a pneumatic balloon) and are fine. However, my sleeve puts me at great risk for terrible reflux since the sleeve creates high pressure and this myotomy will essentially keep my sphincter open all the time. Therefore, it is recommended that I convert my sleeve to a bypass. Bypass creates a low pressure GI tract and will greatly reduce the possibility of reflux. The added benefit is that I will lose more weight, hopefully getting closer to my original goal. I'm currently 330, and I'm so curious how much I will lose after my bypass. My questions for a knowledgable bypass patient are: What is your post op life like at a year post op? What are you able to eat? Vitamins: Do you have to space your vitamin intake out throughout the day? What do you take and when? Dumping syndrome: is it only caused by sugar, or are there other triggers? What do I need to know about malabsorption as it applies to taking medications? How is an oral antidepressant affected by having a bypass? And if there are any people who started around the 330 mark, how much did you lose in 6 months? or a year? Did you make your goal? How long did it take?
  14. Hello everyone! I had my original surgery RNY Dec 2009 which was a hard road when finding the right dose for my SSRI zoloft. We work it out but i felt like i lost my mind for a while. Now that I am having my revision VSG & DS Aug 9th 2017. My question is does anyone have or had problem with absorption of there SSRI like zoloft? The reason I am asking is my for the DS part of the surgery because Zoloft work by breaks down and absorbing in the intestine. I am very nervous about the UP coming surgery because of that factor. Any information would help! Thank you Violet Sent from my SM-G935V using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. I stop as soon as I get the slightest twinge and wait 20 minutes to try again. Take very small sips and tiny bites and chew lots. My CT scan shows there might be a piece of the old band left in there but they are not sure. It can be somewhat normal for a while after a hernia repair. 16. I had a Lapband gone wrong and had it revised to gastric bypass on July 5. I had the Lapband removal, hiatal hernia repair and gastric all in the same surgery. No complications and very little pain. I didn't go with the sleeve because I have GERD and the doc said that it would get worse with the sleeve. The amount of food I get is just fine. I couldn't hold much with the band either but it doesn't hurt to eat anymore! No GERD at all anymore and I feel great. I still get some fatigue from the surgery but it gets better every day! I was 170, 5'3.5, and a 29.6 BMI. I am very happy I made the decision to do this. If your doc recommended bypass, I'd believe him. He knows what's best for you. At first, I asked for the sleeve. He told me why it was best for my situation to have bypass. Best of luck to you whatever you decide!

    July 17th

I had a vsg revision surgery on July 18th. I had my first surgery 6 years ago and I don't think I was mentally prepared and thought it was the answer and not a tool to a healthier me. I had some stretching in the upper stomach that I got fixed. If I can give any advice, stick to the post op program. I am surprised how many different post op plans there are out there. The one I got has me on clear liquids for 2 weeks with no protein. I have seen others that have them eating pudding 3 days after surgery. So much different information makes your head spin [emoji15]
  21. Hi Everyone, Do you have a specific app that works really well for tracking your food intake & exercises? I'm in week 1 of my 8 week pre-op class and they've already got us working on revising our diet and increasing exercising. So two that came up during class were MyFitnessPal and Baritastic. Does anyone have any feedback on either of those, or any others? Thanks!
  22. I am 4 years post op from LapBand surgery and am currently in the process of getting a revision to gastric sleeve. I am fearful however about stretching my stomach back out. I see some people on my 600lb life and YouTube who had the sleeve and then streched there stomach back out. How do I make sure that I dont do that? I simply cannot fail this time around. 23. I am 7 weeks post op and am having difficulty with vomiting after eating meat or fish. I will chew it for at least 60 seconds and even after a bite or two I will throw up everything and it tends to continue for a few hours. I grill my meat or broil it with no oils and I do not understand why I can't keep it down. I can't even do protein shakes as they make me sick so i'm living off of yogurt and i have oatmeal in the morning. My doctor put me on meds but it's making it worse. I'm not losing a ton of weight. I have to add that my surgery was a revision to 2 previous nissen fundoplications so I also had work on my esophagus . Can anyone recommend anything else I can eat to get my protein? Also, any suggestions on incorporating fish or chicken without getting sick. Ren

  25. On September 11, 2015 (less than 2 months from 2 years.) I opted to have the Bariatric sleeve done. Starting weight was 248, my height is 5'2 small build, diabetic among other things. So naturally I was morbidly obese... Fast forward to now, I have ONLY lost 75lbs..([emoji24]) I weigh in at 173 today, still in a unhealthy percentile for my build. I haven't lost more than the usually give or take +1 or -1 lb each week in over a YEAR!! ([emoji36]) I have tried RESTARTS. I go down a lb. but right back up a few days later. I'm not sure what's worst, me wasting my time on having surgery. Or having surgery and not losing near the amount of weight you want and/or need to lose. It extremely HARD for me to except, after all the work I put in for little results. I'm not happy!! I shouldn't be looking into a revision this soon or at all!! I often say " I ALTERED MY BODY and I'M STILL FAT AND UNHEALTHY!! (Who does that? 🤦🏼‍♀️) - has anyone had this issue? What did you do? -is this normal? Or just another fail on my part? - what can I do? I'm I a total loss? BTW, please don't kick me while I'm down. I don't want to hear about going back to the DR. or NUT. My DR is no longer doing the surgery due to insurance & hospital going into litigation. Also, I no longer have insurance, so running to the doctor is very costly, and not an option. Things I do daily: Protein shakes Drink water ( as hard as it is) Constantly active Eat ( small meals of course) [emoji6] Thanks for taking the time to help! It's greatly appreciated, coming from others w/ similarities.
