Did I make the wrong choice?

Sorry you are struggling with this. I know how hard it is, especially when we see folks whom the weight seems to be just falling off, when we dont' see any movement on the scales what so ever. You have to find something else to track your successes if the scale isn't moving. I cannot stress this enough. I personally track all my NSVs and I bump the list every two weeks. In fact, my loss is so slow for the various challenges I post my weekly NSV, not how much weight I lost. I am hoping that I can win Nana~'s cloak though for her challenge. Only you can say if this was the right decision for you or not. Even though I haven't lost much weight, my health is so much better. And my health is why I got banded. I do know that if I had opted for the RNY I don't think I would be in any better health, and my weight loss might not be any more substansive than what I've already lost. You must give this time though.

    The NEW "I'm Fat"

Northernsun That's a fantastic NSV. The body dysmorphia that allowed us to get obese does a number on our heads during the slide down to normal too. What more can a person do, other than trust the image in the mirror and the words of people we love? Poeple are shocked when I tell them I only looked at my face in the mirror. Good to know there's a group of us out there.

    The NEW "I'm Fat"

You know one of the best things about this forum is on matter how you feel about somethng, there is always someone and usuallu many someones, that feel the same way and understand what we are feeling. I alsoi never looked in mirrors if I could help it. I hated trying on clothes at store because of the evil 3 way mirrors! Tended to shop a lot on line or just buy and return if it didn't fit. No matter how many time my DH and DD tell me how good I am doing and how much better I look, I still see in the mirror, fat. There seems to be a short in my brain somewhere that can see the changes and process the sizes I have grown out of but still see me as fat. I am well aware that I have a long way to go yet but I have a hard time seeing where I have been and congratulating myself. I have noticed that I am slowly reaching acceptance for the way I look now and smiling with the NSV that happen along the way. My latest smile- standing in the grocery line and I had to move my cart to the end of the line and I was able to pull it right past me without having to step into the next door cashiers space to do it! Did make me smile!

    Slow Losing?

Hi Ann: I think it is rotten to lose slow. I am not losing that fast at all. How well do you know your body? By that, I mean that counting calories doesn't work for me. I have tried it multiple times and it just doesn't seem to work. Counting carbs does work for me. When I sat down and thought about it, I came to this conclusion. Since then I have been counting my Protein, liquid and carb intake. I think it is making a difference. I also agree with Fenton that it is a good idea to document all that you eat and drink. There is a cool website called www.thedailyplate.com which makes all that very easy to do. I actually keep a little notebook in my purse and before I eat, I jot down what I am eating, how much, what time. But.....as I say that.... I also think it is a matter of perspective. You have lost 23 pounds. That is wonderful! I have read some stories of slow losers on the "slow losers' thread and there are some folks that haven't lost that much in a year. It sounds like you are doing everything right! I would also try to count the NSV - non-scale victories. Can you fit into clothes you couldn't before. Does your seatbelt fit better? I have started to tuck my shirt in my pants. I am sure that there is something other than the scale which is showing your success! I wish you well! I hope the scale moves for you soon!

    NSV

Good job! Each NSV is better than the next, it's the little thing that you have been missing out on for years that mean the most. I can touch my toes (and I do it often just to prove it to myself..lol) My jeans are hanging off my bottom and suprisingly my shoes are getting floppy. Enjoy each new victory! You work hard for them and you deserve each one!

    NSV...here is my latest...share yours

I flew to San Antonio this morning, and I could buckle the seat belt, AND had 3 inches of extra strap! It felt so good! I'm not having many scale victories, but am sure noticing some NSV's! Congratulations to all of you on yours! Cindy

Started Jogging on the Knee! Yea!!!

Rica, NSV is "nonscale victory". In your case, being able to resume running w/o pain in your knees. A few others, wedding ring now fits, use airplane seatbelt w/o extender, tie your shoes w/o passing out, clothes fitting better, and I know you'll think of a ton more!

How Are People Treating You After Surgery?

Since I haven't been back to work yet since my surgery, I'll throw this out there just for fun. I just got a rejection letter on Saturday from a job interview I went on about a month ago (I know, Happy New Year to me). It was a state job with excellent benefits and would have meant a substantial promotion (more money, more responsibility). I was qualified for the position, and the interviewers seemed happy with my responses to their questions during the interview. I couldn't help but wonder if my weight played a role in not getting the job. There! I said it! I think that people in a professional setting do not take me seriously because of my weight. By the way, one NSV for me was that I DID NOT stick my head into a vat of ice cream because I was rejected. I was certainly devastated because a job at this level doesn't open up very often. I boo-hooed a bit and decided that there must be something better out there waiting for me and that's why I didn't get the job.
  10. @@gowalking you are exactly right! The NSVs are so important. I haven't weighed myself since my last appointment with the surgeon because the changing scale numbers can make me crazy. And it is enough to ask myself to put forth the effort to stick with this new eating style without the emotional roller coaster of the scale. There's already enough in life beating us up! Interestingly I was speaking to an out of town friend tonight and she asked how the weight loss was going. I told her I was doing well, but, she was really disappointed that I could not tell her how many pounds I've lost. I noticed that her fixation on the amount of weight kind of irritated me. She's thin though, so, my guess is that my explanation of how pleased I am with the NSVs was kind of lost on her. At this point I don't even want to tell her once I find out because I already feel I've succeeded a lot without "the number."

Officially out of plus sizes!!! NSV

Being able to shop in the "normal sizes" stores is a huge NSV - congrats! Even though buying new clothes in each size as we go down isn't practical, it costs nothing to go into stores and try things on just to see what actually DOES fit. It can be amazing to see our bodies that way. Hmmm, think this is good advice for myself, too!
  19. I had my six week follow up with my primary care physician today. I like it when the nurse walks in and tells me I need a new picture for their file. I don't look like the original they took a year ago. The doctor was happy with my current weight loss. So that was the good news... ...Little did he know that I am at the same weight I was two weeks out of surgery. I didn't handle the Christmas holiday very well at all. I've tried to refocus this past week but am not having much luck. I feel like I could eat everything and anything, and sometimes catch myself doing just that. I've tried asking myself why I'm eating just to give myself a chance to put whatever I have down. That worked well for a while. Now I am eating because I can. I feel hungry a lot more often and there isn't any restriction to help. I don't go in for a fill until January 4th and it feels so far away. Somehow, I have to get through the weekend without completely losing it. I told myself I would be the same weight, if not less, on January 4th that I was at my two week checkup. As of this very moment, I'm losing that wage with myself. Instead of being down, I'm actually up two pounds. It makes me want to cry. I thought I could be stronger during this four week stretch. So while I love the reaction of the doctor and the nurse, I'm not happy with how I'm feeling right now. I don't want to be hungry anymore. I want to be able to eat a few bites of something and walk away from the table, not belly up for more.

    Suggested Mini-goals

Vines, these are excellent goals. I was just trying to think of some. For me, though, double digits in kg is probably just around the corner. I'm currently at 220 lbs (100 kg). I've been making personal scale goals in 10 lb increments. When I was stuck at 230 lbs for three weeks, I was very disappointed, until a co-worker pointed out to me that I looked smaller. I went home that evening and measured myself, and sure enough I had lost inches, but I couldn't see it for myself until I did side by side. (click here: http://www.geocities.com/cissy1218/photos2.html) But then of course, after my first fill, I lost those 10 pounds in 10 days. I'm not even looking for the scale to move again any time soon. So what I have determined now is that when I'm looking for scale victories, but the scale isn't moving, look for a NSV with measurements.
