  1. Right now I think it is still in clinical trials and doesn't have FDA approval. It is a sleeve made of some material (probably a kind of plastic) that a doctor puts in your small intestines and it blocks absorption of nutrients in the duodenum. http://www.gidynamic...er-overview.php http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/19858703 I really hope that one works out, because that is another fairly safe tool for bariatric weight control. In a way you'd assume an endoluminal sleeve combined with a lap band would give the benefits of a roux-en-Y bypass surgery but it would be reversible and have a far lower mortality rate. I have no idea if the surgeries can be combined though, or if you'd even need to do both. The clinical study said a loss of about 19% of excess weight in the first 3 months, but I've also read a 30% drop of excess weight in 6 months, and that can be doubled with something called a flow restrictor to adjust gastric emptying into the intestines (most of the info comes from sites tied to the maker, so no idea how independent they are). http://www.yourbaria...luminal-sleeve/ http://www.wlshelp.c...ndobarrier.html But if I ever do decide to do something for my weight, I want it to be something relatively safe, reversible and affordable. The lap band seems the best idea now but an endoluminal sleeve could be a good idea too when it gets FDA approval.

    Waiting Game! Ahhhhhh!

Good luck! I'm headed in for pre-op tomorrow. My first real appointment with the surgeon was back in September and I didn't get my official approval until early December. It takes a while but I can't wait to have my surgery complete. I go in Monday morning at 8:30am and surgery is set for 10:30!
  3. I had surgery 10/2014 so I'm not quite at 6 mths yet. I've lost 96 lbs which I am SUPER PROUD of so in no way is my question meant to negate that. I was just wondering though, at what point are you out of the rapid weight loss phase and really need to push? Even given the dramatic weight loss, I'm still 50 lbs from my recommended/goal weight but I've pretty much kinda plateaued the last few weeks and no matter what I do, it doesn't really budge.
  4. I was sleeved 10/22 and have only lost 22 lbs. it's coming off slow. Highest weight was 216. Down to 195. I need advise. People that I've talked to have said it's slower because I started at s lower weight. Any advise or thoughts? Thanks!
  5. So this coming August, my band will be 10years old crazy that it's been that long. I've had great weight loss but still haven't lost as much weight as I would like; that being said my doctor suggested having my band removed and considering another WLS......but idk. I'm kinda on the fence. And I was so nervous when I got the band put but nothing I know how to "deal with it" and unfortunately eating sauce with my Protein has become normal to keep from vomiting. Any advice? Suggestions? If I do get it removed I think I'd go with the sleeve as it has less complications..... I'm just so confused right now and quite disappointed that I haven't met my goal weight and it's been 10 years.... Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. I am going crazy. I had my surgery 10/22. I feel no different. I have no trouble drinking, getting my protein in anything. Is there something wrong with me? I have been having my soups clear liquids. Am I doing something wrong? Can I have pudding at this stage? I am so confused and overwhelmed.

    Finally In Maintenance

That's a good question. I am less than 1/2 lb from goal however have been making choices that are not the healthiest. There's a piece of me that thinks that I should lose 10 more so that in case I gain a few ill be ok. Quite honestly, I don't know what to do if I actually hit my goal. There is a certain loss that goes along with that. I am wearing a size 4 (vanity sizing) however feel really flabby. I have an incredibly busy lifestyle with small kids, business owner and caring for a very ill parent (all by myself) who lives a state away so I do what I can but exercise I mostly walk the dog and 1-2/wk I do elliptical for 40-60 minutes. I'm eating 1000-1600 cal/day

I'm not quite at goal but had my surgery last summer as well. As my weight loss has slowed and I'm not constantly dropping pounds, I'm finding myself sliding back into my old dislike of my body, being very critical of every flaw and in general not being very positive about myself. I'm fighting that negative self-talk pretty hard, and I've asked my husband to help me, too. I have a very hard time accepting compliments, but now the 'rule' is that if he says 'hi gorgeous!' or 'you look great' or whatever, I'm not allowed to deny it or say anything negative in return. I say 'thank you' and 'I'm glad you like this dress' and don't let the negative stuff invade my head. It's amazing how much better I feel about myself when I'm not berating myself all the time. I was in a size 18 when I had surgery in June, I'm now in a 10 and will shortly wear an 8... it's absolutely ridiculous for me to be so critical of myself. I look good, and it's okay for me to think it AND say it. You too, right? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    What does the smart bander....

I dont find I need to carry anything. If I get caught out for a long time and am hungry, well then I am, it wont kill me. But if I know I'll be out - liek today - I have four hours of lectures and tutes today between 10 and 2 and I'll leave at about 9 I'll just buy a coffee or two and eat something when I get home - but the only reason I wont buy a sandwich or something at uni (plenty of healthy options there) is coz I'm too cheap to spend $7 on a sandwich. I could take lunch I guess, but it doesnt really worry me to wait. I have all the running round with kids sports etc too, and generally, as long as I've eaten good meals at Breakfast and lunch, I can wait till 7 or 7.30 when we get home for dinner. So, lol, I just wing it and starve if I have to. I'm not organised enough to carry food, and I dont eat Protein bars or stuff like that that would be so easy to carry.
  10. Hello, I will attempt to answer your questions as best I can given my own experiences. I was banded in January '10 (no prior problems conceiving however). I've been TTC since August 2010 and succeeded in February of this year. My baby is due in November. My lowest was 97 lbs down from prior to surgery and I'm currently 93 lbs down (gained four lbs since being pregnant). My WL dr's stance is, if there are no problems, stay filled to your current fill. I had had my current fill since September of last year. At about 12 weeks along, I started being extremely tight all the time (I think it was due to the increase in hormones from the placenta) so I elected to get an unfill. They took out more than I would have liked, since now I have no restriction, but it is for the good of the baby. Baby is currently measuring on track though. *Has anybody got pregnant this short into the lap band?* I got pregnant after 13 months. My dr (both WL and OBGYN) both recommend that your weight stabilize for a couple months before TTC. I didn't really follow this :-\ -Like I said, it has only been 6 months. I know that my research recommends a year after surgery, but if possible I do not want to wait *Does your band have to be completely 'open' while pregnancy?* -I know that my mother had me while she had her stomach stapled(which I know is a completely different surgery) but she couldn't get the right nutritions for me and I was born at only 3lbs. Can you keep a fill in the band while you are pregnant without hurting the baby? No, the band does not have to be open. I still have a fill of 3 mL in my 10 ML band. I had 6.2 up until 14 weeks along. *Has anyone experienced a 'slip' while pregnant?* -While pregnant, a lot of women have morning sickness and vomit. I know that vomiting is a risk for a 'slip'. Not me...but I was lucky enough to only get sick due to ms one or two times. I started pb'ing a lot early 2nd trimester so I had an unfill. *Can the baby get tangled in the cord to the port?* No...the baby is safely tucked inside the uterus (think of it like a bubble). *Women who HAVE HAD BABIES while on the lap band... did you lose your baby weight faster than someone who does not have a lap band?* I haven't had my baby yet

How are the february 09 bandsters doing?

I was banded Feb. 10, 09. I've had 4 fills and am now at 5.6ccs. If I'm not at my sweet spot, I'm very close! I have another fill scheduled for June 15, but I'm not certain I need it. Will wait until then to see. Realistically, starting with my pre-op diet through now, I've lost 59 pounds. We'd all like to lose FAST but that's pretty darned fast if you think about it. And I know if I'd been dieting on my own, I would have long since falled off the wagon and gained it all back, LOL. I'll admit that I don't journal, I walk as often as I can and if I did those things I'd probably lose a bit faster but I'm happy with how I'm doing...very happy!
  12. I was banded 2/19 I have lost 25 pounds to date. 11 of those are pre-banding. It has been very slow for me. I have 2.75 cc in a 8cc band. My first fill was 2cc and my second fill was .75 cc. I workout about 2-3x per week. I have not yet found my sweet spot. I am scheduled for another fill in 3 weeks. Hopefully, this one will do it. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I am eating 1500-1800 calories a day.

    Carbs

I read quite a bit about low carbs, and people usually mention 20-30 carbs. Does anyone know if it is bad to have fewer than 20 carbs daily? I usually work out an hour daily, as much as two hours and as few as 45 minutes. It is at a moderate intensity. My diet is often only and egg, a quarter cup of shredded cheese, meat and a Protein Drink or 1 1/2 Protein Drinks. I can only have 1 1/2 ounces of meat for a meal, so it isn't possible to fit much more in. I sometimes get extra carbs if I have chili, or I VERY occasionally have a wasa cracker with Peanut Butter. I get 500-600 calories daily. I am 10 weeks out. Thanks for any advice!

    Cross-Country Skiing

Saturday, I did a spin class in the morning and then xc skied 3 miles in the afternoon. Really felt that on Sunday morning. It's -7 this morning and I'm planning to go skiing this afternoon. Scheduled for spin class tonight. CGJ, I've been looking around for xc ski clubs but can't find any in my area. Plenty of downhill ski clubs and several friends are into that. I also want to get into mountain-biking this Summer, but my friends that are into cycling stay on the roads. I have 15 miles of mountain-top bike trails near my house, but have been warned to not go up there alone as the conditions are rough. I biked up there 35 years and it was rough. I'm told it's now 10 times worse.

I have aged about 10 years in the past 8.5 months. Thank God for retinol. Wouldn't change a thing[emoji3]
  17. I have always been thin until the last 10 years so for me it will be like a welcoming back the "real" me. I think I would be so hard if I was going into the unknown though. Can't even imagine! Just got my date today. I'm beyond excited!!
  18. So I went for my second fill today (i will be 10 weeks on thursday) 8and I was talking to the nurse practioner that was doing my fills and she scolded me for drinking Protein shakes in the morning. According to my doctors plan, I am suppose to be totally off Protein Shakes except for after fills. I like having my shake in the morning. Its quick and easy and I stay full until at least noon. So whats the big deal? If it wasnt keeping me full that would be another story, right? By the way, I got .30 in my band today, so im at little over 6cc now. She wanted to give me 1, but I didnt think I needed it. Just needed a little tweek.

    Post Op Visit

Well I went yesterday for my ten day post op and I was down 6 pounds since surgery on Nov 10th. He took the steri strips off and the incision sites look very good. I started my vitamins last night and he said I could start light cardio but not weights yet. I can't tell you how amazed I am at my whole body feeling better. I have lost around 44 pounds and the swelling in my knee has went down and they only time it hurts is when I get up after sleeping or sitting for a while. But once I get moving is feels good. Before I lost some of my weight my knee was constantly aching and swelled, who would of thought losing a little weight would make such a big difference? LOL... I go back on December 16th for another appointment and by then I will be on solid foods. I do not know if they will do a fill on that date he left that open to see how I am feeling with my hunger. But I do have to be on regular foods for at least a week before they will do a fill. Hubby's surgery is scheduled for January 4th and he is doing fantastic on his pre op diet. He has lost over his 10% and is going to try to lose as much as he can so surgery will go better for him. Well sorry so long. Have a great day all. Char

    Newbie

Hi Kelly! Welcome! I had my sleeve on July 25. When my husband had his in April of 2012, I said I would lose weight the old fashioned way. Unfortunately, I gained 20 pounds. So, I finally did it. I've lost 51 pounds, including my pre-op loss (10). It's a big decision, and contrary to what people think, it's not easy. But, it is worth it! Good luck on your journey!

    3rd fill - Big Difference

I think I may be at mine too. I have 4 cc's in a 10 cc band. I have also slowed my eating so I am feeling that signal for the first time that I can ever remember that I am full. It feels so good. I never used to have that feeling until I was stuffed and miserable. I did read on one of the other topics that the fat pouch around the band may shrink as you lose weight so it may alter the sweet spot. I think it usually said that it takes about 6 months of losing weight and getting fills before you can tell a difference with a tiny fill. I am remembering that as I go along just in case today feels like the sweet spot and as I continue to lose, it may change. There is so much good information on here. I weighed this morning and I am down 37lbs since my surger 2/23/11. I have been working out an hour almost every day and have been doing some small hand weights because I have no upper body strength and then I do cardio. I am so loving the changes I am seeing. I also started doing a bunch of research on vitamins and minerals and have started taking some and I am feeling so inspired. Keep up your good work.

    passport card

Mine cost $55 from the County clerk office. You can also go to the Post office. First thing is you need a passport photo. You can go to any Walgreens or CVS and get one taken for $10. (no smile) You take the photo, driver's license, and original birth cert. Mine said 4-6 weeks, it took 3 weeks. FYI - Since 9/11 you have to send in your birth cert. (no copies). They mail it back.
