  1. Hi everyone! I was sleeved on 1/23/15 and reached my goal of 145 on 12/24/15. I never bounced more than 2-3 pounds over my goal weight for a long while, at least until I went on vacation in November 2016. I jumped up to 153, but was able to get down around 150, but no lower. I haven't been able to drop under 150 since (despite being incredibly strict) and after getting up to around 153, I enrolled in a personal training program at the hospital where I'd had my surgery (also endorsed by my surgeon). I started two weeks ago and have 45 minute sessions 2x per week, mixing up strength training with cardio. I'm also trying to tighten up my body prior to considering plastic surgery (especially the damn FUPA that is the bane of my existence). My protein intake has been within the range as stated by my surgeon (60-80g) and my caloric intake is generally between 600-1000 calories (tracked via My Fitness Pal). I'm sort of ballparking my own caloric range based on what's been posted here, as my nutritionist never actually gave me an idea as to what I should be sticking to. I know that I've had Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), which starts 24 hours after a session, peaks at 48 hours, and is mostly gone by 72 hours. However, I'm noticing the the scale isn't dropping, but rather, it's substantially climbing. I was 152 when I started and am pushing over 156. I cannot get the scale to lower and it's getting to be very frustrating. Further, I've noticed that I've actually gone up an inch or two in measurements from where I was two weeks ago. Ugh ugh ugh. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm staying hydrated, but it's hard to keep wanting to knock back my liquids if this is retention at work. I have my belated two year post-op appointment (had to keep rescheduling due to weather) on May 5th and I'd hate to go there up 10 pounds or more when I'd had an otherwise successful year. I'm just frustrated beyond belief.

    Stalls and weight gain

Today I gained weight for the second time since I had the gastric sleeve surgery three weeks ago. I was 700 grams heavier today than I was yesterday, or 1,5 pounds. Last time this happened was a week after the procedure, when I gained 400 grams one day (a little under a pound) and then the day after I weighed the same as I did two days before. I weigh myself every day, and have done for a long time. I realise that weight fluctuations can happen, but I'm still a little shaken that they can happen when I'm only eating a few hundred calories per day. Yesterday, I ate around 800 calories, which is about the highest I've gone. Usually, I'm around 4-500 and not really hitting my protein target. I am hitting my water targets, so I'm not dehydrated. According to the UCLA Center for human nutrition, most people need at least 1200 calories per day just to survive, and eating less than 1000 is essentially starvation. So how can I gain weight on what is essentially a starvation diet? I'm not working out a lot, but I walk to and from work every day..

    Bad Advice and being honest.

Indeed, some of my "always thin" friends have been fighting against weight gain all their lives. They say that my eating now resembles theirs and there's nothing abnormal about it. When I pass up dessert or take more than half my meal home in a doggie bag, it looks no different from what they customarily do.
  4. Hi oolismom, you are doing great!. Just a little heads up here... you guys, THINNER for life and more control over food... looks like the truth when you begin this journey, but veteran after veteran say this is work forever. After some or much of your hunger comes back, and you can eat more, and the routine may get boring... weight gain is a very real possibility. It is important to learn new routines, and remain vigilant every day. Maintinaning is the hardest part for many. I did not even get to maintenance until almost 3 years out, and at this point am considered one of the centers most successful patients. You do not get to goal and then cruse. Do follow your docs advice, and keep aware of changes back to old behavior, and you will do fine! I love my sleeve and it makes it possible to live at goal, with all the work I did during the losing phase still in place.

Interesting. I'd like to see those because I've only seen studies that show a correlation between lack of sleep and weight gain, not proof. Great thread. I'm a chemical plant operator (no....not a telephone type operator). I make detergents that go into your car's engine oil. But I'm about to quit to go back to school full time to be a vet tech. Ssshhhhh....don't tell them. Oh yeah....part time massage therapist and part time bicycle mechanic as well. I stay busy.

    In my 2nd Stall!

Look at it this way. Say you were getting just enough calories to maintain a weight. Then you decided to add one Twinkie a day to your diet. You would not see the weight gain immediately but over the course of time it would show up. This is easy to believe. Why is it harder for us to believe the opposite? If you maintain a calorie deficit over time your body will lose to fit that reality. It may hold on for awhile but eventually it will give way. I realized this early on. I weighed out of curiosity of how my body was doing it, it was fascinating. Up, down, stall, up, down, down, etc. I should have kept a chart for fun. I had no doubt that goal would be met. My body had a lower goal in mind than the arbitrary one my mind picked as you can see by my signature.
  7. I am RTRM (mammographer). It was partly my patients that helped me make my decision to have my sleeve done! Seeing first hand many, MANY very overweight and obese women telling me how their" weight gain got worse the older they got"! I have had to help young women in their 50's unable to stand undress themselves- I have heard countless stories of health problems caused from obesity! It's different when you hear it from the skinny news anchor or even your own doctor. Most of these women have no reason to discuss what they do with me however they do and I have been listening.... I had the surgery I have lost 55lbs since my surgery on 11-14-12. I have been struggling lately but I am trying to get back in the groove!

Interesting study....and perhaps I'm missing something, but it still looks like correlation. Even in the study, they cannot "prove" cause, they only list "possible causes for shift work related weight gain." To me, that's like the correlation between watching too much TV and obesity. Yes, people who watch alot of TV may be more likely to be overweight, but watching the TV is not the cause. And correlation is not causation. Never mind....I'm not trying to get picky. I'm a shift worker, but I'm making plans to give it up. Trying to eat right and stay fit are difficult enough. Doing it while being a shift worker takes it to a whole other level of difficulty, but I'm living proof it can be done.

    8 Days Post Op

I am now 8 days post op. My doc required a two week pre-op liquid diet. Immediately after surgery, he wants me on a two clear liquid diet. Since starting my pre-op diet, I am down 25 pounds!!! But...I had gained 15 pounds from my initial consultation in November. I think the weight gain was due to numerous things since November...Christmas, Disney Vacation in January and the whole fear of not being able to eat a certain food ever again. I feel good. I don't see my doc till Thurs. for a followup and release to return to work. I'm looking so forward to full liquids and mushies! Never thought I'd say I was looking forward to cream soups, puddings, etc. Later.

Bariatric Eating FaceBook group seems to have great ideas regarding the weight gain 2 years post surgery.
  11. Let me start off that I have not been a model sleever for the past 3 years but in 2014 I reached my goal weight of 130 in less than an year. I was able to maintain it with eating clean/ low carbish diet for awhile until my weight settled around 135-138, and I was ok with that. Over the last 6-9 months I have gained 10-15 pounds and am not happy about it. I started to get more strict on my food with no increase of activity for the first 6 months. Never did exercise much from the beginning just here and there and I could drop 5-7 lbs quickly before. What changed? Now Im super serious about losing this weight. For the past 4 weeks I have worked out for 30-45 minutes 3-5 times per week. My food has been on point with one allowed cheat meal per week, which would consist of grilled chicken, green Beans and mashed potatoes for example. I have not lost one freaking pound! This is extremely frustrating!!! I cannot figure out what Im doing wrong?? BTW i start off my reset with a 3 day liquid diet. Could my metabolism be broken? Has my weight just settled here now? The things that I have always done just don't seem to work anymore. Even with increased exercise.I still eat very little and on a saucer or salad plate. Is anyone else going thru again similar? I really don't want to spend the money on a personal trainer and nutritionist but it's looking like i may.... TIA

    Pjtp...again!

WOW! Yay, Ebony! Fabulous! G4E - Don't stress over the weight gain - you have a few other things going on in your life to worry about that. Please keep us posted on how things are going. Hugs and best wishes. Glad to hear that! Good luck at the Docs.
  13. I think this is the toughest time for me. I too have gained about 20 pounds back. But I made up my mind no more sliders and no more sugar until it all comes off. Then if I can do maintenance with a little sweets I will, but if I start gaining again I will will not be able to eat sugar again. Because for the last 6 months I have just been going crazy eating junk. I'm one of those people who just can't have a bit. Is that what is behind your weight gain? Maybe we can encourage each other like we did in the beginning.

The only harm alcohol causes us is empty calorie weight gain. Most likely people get drunk more quickly due to the fact you have abstained from alcohol for a good bit of time. Your tolerance is different. I used to enjoy a couple glasses of wine every night, but 2 now is way different. I don't do it simple because I'm still trying to make goal and wine is way off my course. It's a mind set
  15. Well, I had a fill today post op after my port had flipped and I had corrective surgery on May 10th. I went for a follow up today. I gained two pounds! The doctor took one look at me and he said I had a fluid build up. He drained almost 16 oz of fluid out of me! Anyway, he said he gave me a fill during my surgery and I said I felt nothing, he decided to give me another fill today. Anyway, I was only able to hold down 1 Cup of food before I felt like I would start regurgitating. It was a good feel, not a restrictive feel but enough to let me know I'd had enough. My doctor is very conservative on fills and this time I think he hit the green zone because I'm comfortable and feel good that I can stop eating when I feel full. Before the band I would have eaten everything on my plate. Hopefully, a loss will show up on the scale. The doctor said that the fluid build up post op was a contributing factor in my weight gain of two pounds. A gain is a gain so I have to log that down and remind. Myself not to get discouraged.

My Husband Thinks I'm Copping Out

I don't know about anyone else but I know when I was laying in the hospital bed in pain barfing my brains out (not literally), I was envisioning someone coming up to me and saying " You (I) took the easy way out". I envisioned myself literally punching them in the face lol. IMO the easy way out would of been to remain obese or continue crash dieting, heck I could eat whatever I wanted. Of course weight gain sucks but remaining obese would of been a lot easier than having to change my diet through surgery and gosh don't make me vent about my recovery lol. Surgery was definitely my last attempt at losing weight and the thought of possibly dying and never seeing my kids ever again was by no means the easy way out. Unfortunately some people do die from wls and I'm pretty confident in saying that most people that end up having wls, they have years of crash dieting under their belt or yrs of trying to change there way of eating. *I have no idea what sent me on a tangent lol. I should be in bed* OP I wouldn't worry about convincing your husband or anyone for that matter of why you are having the surgery. This is your life and you have to do what you feel is right for yourself. He may change his view after you have surgery and start losing the weight or he may not. My husband seems very ENTHUSIASTIC about me losing the weight and I'm like huh? He seems over joyed with having me lose the weight but I guess he kept those feelings secret from me because I though he'd be scared of losing me if I became skinny lol. Men are weird

Mine lasted about 2 hours. Did labs, EKG, told me everything that was going to happened. I was supposed to talk with the anesthesiologist but he was running behind and I didn't want to wait. I asked if they did a leak check but my doctor doesn't unless he felt there was reason for it. The one thing I would suggest packing was Chapstick for the hospital. I forgot that and really wish I would have had some. Good luck!!! Thank you meganmom! Everything went GREAT today!! I love my surgeon, he has the best bed side manner ever and despite the 10 pound weight gain, he told me to enjoy my Christmas and he would see me on the 28th. Going today has just made me even more excited about this life style choice I chose! All I did today as far as tests go was labs. He said he would do a leak test, get a sample of my liver (if its fatty or abnormal) and put a scope down my throat to check it but all that will be done while I'm under anesthesia. How are you doing? I am so glad it well! Sorry I didn't realize it was today. I was thinking it was tomorrow! Haha I am doing pretty good. I am sleepy a lot and sore at the big incision and have some bruising. I don't have much gas so that's good. Just trying to get my Protein and Water in.

Did you lose weight taking Lithium?

That is great! It is good when you find something that really works for you. I imagine you will continue to do well on it. I had my sleeve 15 months ago and my bipolar meds really didn't seem to interfere with weight loss at all. Funny, because when I first started the bipolar meds about 10 years ago, the weight gain went way up!
  19. Thank you for posting the video. Your process for deciding sounded a little like some of my thoughts. I am not morbidly obese, but I already have weight related health issues and I am only 48. Diabetes and heart disease run in my family and I really need to stop the progression now. I would much prefer to have the surgery closer to home but I don't have the $20-25 thousand. I am still undecided as to what I should do. I know a few people that have had surgery in Mexico and were very satisfied with the care they received. They did not have WLS so I am researching now to see if I can find a surgeon that I would be comfortable with. I could just wait for the inevitable weight gain back to a BMI of 35, but that also sounds crazy to me. My current changes to my diet should help me by successful with WLS and I don't want to go backward.
  20. Yes unfortunately the antipsychotics cause metabolic issues, such as lot of weight gain and increased cholesterol levels. Quetiapine, risperidone, mirtazapine all come to mind as some of the worst offenders, but all psych meds have this unfortunate side effect. Whether your surgeon wants to proceed, I can't say. Your weight loss may not be as effective as you expect.

    Medication and the Gastric Sleeve

I was on psych meds and didn't have any issues getting approved. However, I was told to work closely with my med provider to make sure my medications stayed at therapeutic levels as I lost weight. If you're not already, talking with a therapist might help. Also, FYI, part of the approval process for most insurances is a psych evaluation. And, as already stated, a lot of psych meds do cause weight gain. So that is something to consider for long-term success. One of the medications I was on contributed to a 60lb weight gain in a years time. Thankfully, I was able to find an alternative.
  22. I use to use food for my depression I got up to 315 after surgery I dropped down to 195 well that was three years ago I started to use food as a crutch after the passing of my son I went back to my old habits and know back to 225 I still can't eat a lot but just can't drop weight like I did right after surgery any suggestions.. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. I also had a concern with keeping the weight off after being banded long term. I recently read an article that stated that the reason that many "older bands (7-10 years old) had to be removed was slippage or a lack of a perfected technique. Over the last 5 years or so many surgeons have perfected the techniques for banding a patient and the procedure is now done lapriscopically as opposed to open surgery (which is how it started). They are stillc ompiling data, but band slippage and weight gain seems to have subsided a bit in the last 5 years.

Pictures of Jenna and her rantings

I'm surprised. I've been lurking for a while and I haven't seen anyone with a low BMI be blasted. 2 cents: How many of us wish we would have stopped the weight gain at 190 by getting the lap band? I think if any one of us who would have known what we know now, would have gotten banded. I firmly believe in my own case, the issue is not about getting a measly 50 pounds off, it's about fighting for the rest of my life to get it off. If it were a perfect world, I'd come to terms with my eating and what causes it. But it's not perfect and I may never really master it. I just need a tool that will help me cope with the ramifications of it while I deal with the emotional aspect of it. I think the band is a great tool for anyone who may be spiraling out of control. To say I wish I was that BMI is pointless because when YOU WERE you didn't stay there or take care to stay there right? I think it's a brave thing when someone sees where the road is heading and takes measures. If I could back to when I was 190 lb. and the band was around I would have gone for it...

    Just had my band removed...

New2Tch, Sorry you went through that with your band. I did not have erosion but had mine removed last October and it took me a good 5 months before I was even thinking about revision as I had lost faith in myself and WLS in general. I've chosen to revise to RNY due to the malabsorption properties and also my daughter who lives with me had it and has done well so far. After my band was removed I did lose a bit of weight until my stomach went back to it's old size and I put on some poundage. I think it was that weight gain that made me realize that I still had a problem and just needed to find the right procedure for me. I wish you luck in your healing process, Nancy.
