  1. Im in the same boat!! Now After having my daughter im having a harder time loosing weight then i did the first time after surgery. Recently had a fill and lost 2 pounds first week of fill. Calorie intake is about 700-800 for the day with most of that being protein i get about 64g of it a day. I admit i could do more for exercise but after falling off the wagon im slowly getting back on. Wish you luck ladies!!

    Am I too young? ADVICE!

i don't know that i can answer your question directly -- i think it just comes down to the fact that there are other things which matter much more with regard to being "ready" for surgery than age. there are a lot of hoops that most people have to jump through on doctor's orders before surgery, and i think they are absolutely necessary and wonderful: lifestyle change classes, meetings with nutritionists and psychologists, pre-op diets, etc. etc. before i started the process, i dreaded those things, but now, in hindsight, i couldn't be more grateful for having gone through all that preparation. the two things that weren't required that i believe should be are, first, really significant past attempts at weight loss. surgery is NOT an easy way out by any stretch of the imagination, so one has to be sure from the very beginning that one tried all of one's less invasive options first. i know that dieting for most of us who are obese and morbidly obese is kind of pointless, given the statistics as far as regain is concerned, but i think the experience of losing weight on one's own give a dieter a lot of perspective. it sounds like this is already part of your experience, right? the second thing i think is imperative for a surgery candidate is reading of the boards. spend several months reading lapbandtalk.com and obesityhelp.com/forums/lapband to read about all the ups and downs of life after surgery... take in as much as possible, ask as many questions as you can come up with, etc. the people who are most lost after surgery and who struggle the most to have any sort of success, in my opinion, are those who haven't been prepared adequately by their surgeons (through classes, etc.), by their past (through weight loss attempts), and by other post-ops (through message boards)... three totally essential parts of being ready for surgery. just my 2 cents! all the best of luck to you-- sarah
  3. This is completely normal. I had surgery in May and was angry, tired, emotional, stressed, etc. It got better for me when I started eating real foods again. Liquids and soft foods made me gag most of the time. I would say I started feeling kind of normal at 6 weeks. Focus on what you need to get done and what can wait. Don't be too hard on yourself. Celebrate when you achieve your protein and fluid amounts. It is HARD at first. I guess that is why not everyone is having the surgery. You can do it! I am 4.5 months out started at 237.5 lbs now I am 173.5. Still have days that are hard but it does get better.
  4. I am trying to plan ahead. How long did it take for you all to go back to work? My job isn't necessarily strenous but I drive 140 miles roundtrip to work each day (4 days a week - on Fridays I work from home). I am figuring maybe working from home for 4 weeks after my surgery but am trying to be realistic as to how much time I should actually take as PTO and how much time simply working from home. Any suggestions?

    Meds

No, I have not asked about the motrin. I just don't want to spend the money on the medicine and only use it once or never. Once you buy, you can't take back if I never use it. The medicine for pain is a narcotic that the CVS and Walgreens don't supply, so I dropped the Rx off at a local pharmacy a week ago and they haven't called me yet to say it has come in...smh. Thanks for the advise though.

    Meds

I know it is a lot of money but you guess what you will or won't need. I have need the nausea medicine everyday since surgery and I am almost 4 weeks post op. I needed the pain medicine everyday until a few days ago. i also have used the levsin which is anti spasmodic for the stomach and would definitely have ended up bak n the hospital without the medication. Have you checked wiht your doc about using motrin. For most of us nsaids are not allowed after surgery especially immediately postop.

    Chili

Early out I ate the Hormel Turkey Chili and when cleared for beef at 6 weeks, the Dennison's Fat Free Chili (formerly known as 98% fat free). I also make my own, heavy on the meat so it is Protein dense. Lynda

    Exercise Post-Hernia Repair

Hi! I had a rather large umbilical hernia repaired at the same time of my bypass on Aug 15. My surgeon did say that I would be at a greater risk of a hernia in the future but that I should still be able to exercise. My program requires follow up appointments every 3 months including with a physical therapist. He had me start with just walking post op. I progressed to adding weight machines for stability with a low weight after a couple of weeks. About 3 months post op I moved on to free weights and now at 6 months I continue to be able to increase the weight I use during my strength training. I check in with my body a lot to make sure I'm not getting any tingling or burning sensations around my belly button (first indicator things are having too much tension) and I always wear a weight belt. He did tell me that it would probably be smart to stay away from jerk & cleans and other rapid heavy-weight moves. But there's very little overall that I have to stay away from. I would highly recommend going slowly with increasing weight. The other thing is that it was 3 months before I was able to do any ab-focused exercises. It was really uncomfortable.
  10. Hi, I got my lapband on 6/9/11 so almost a week! I seem to be having a lot of gas and diarrhea and I wondered if that's normal? I have completed 5 days of "clears plus protein shakes" and moved onto "Pureed with Protein Drinks" . Thanks.
  11. Rachel is right. lol since no food...liquids was all I got. I was on clear liquids for 2 weeks! lol so... and that includes the protein shakes. But I couldn't do them. So clear liquids it was. And believe it was hell for two whole weeks! lol But you'll make it and it will be a distant memory a couple of months from now.

    Am I too young? ADVICE!

Cortney, You say you keep gaining weight "no matter what you do", so I wonder what you are doing. Have you ever been to weight watchers? Has anyone ever taught you to count calories and write it down. Has anyone explained how to read a nutrition label on a packaged food? Has anyone shown you how to weigh or measure your food for a "normal" portion. Do you know how many calories you need to cut from your daily intake to lose one pound a week? Are you eating most of your food at home or at school? If at home, have you asked your parents to eliminate the foods that will easily add on pounds and to have healthier food choice in the house, like fruit for Snacks etc. Sometimes for SOME people, a little knowledge can be a very powerful tool to understanding portion control. Changing everything you currently eat to half the portion, can make a big difference. While you investigate if the lap band is right for you, why not try some of the above, if anything it will help you be better prepared after lap band surgery.

    On my way

My sleeve surgery is scheduled for March 13. I'm excited, scared, excited!! I'm starting a three day cleanse today. Then cutting way back on serving size and making healthier choices and two weeks out starting the liquid diet. I want to be well on my way to this new life change prior to surgery. Any recommendations on eating prior to surgery? My friend and I are going down this journey together. Her son and my dauber are married and we share grandchildren. I am so glad Debbie is with me on this journey!!! Here we go Debbie!!!

    DEBATE DEBATE DEBATE

i eat what i want and i want now to eat good/healthy food choices once a week i eat one meal of whatever i want...i am not on a diet, i just eat different now..

    DEBATE DEBATE DEBATE

I agree, moderation is key. If I start craving, I have to satiate that craving even it's only by having a bite or two. I do count those cals and try to compensate throughout the day for that splurge. Also, I restrict myself to no more than 2 'cheat' meals a week. The less pressure you put on yourself the more apt you are to follow your rules and the less likely you are going to want those no no foods in general.

Diagnosed as being anemic following lap band installation

I had my lap band installed about a year and a half ago. I was just recently informed by my Doctor that I was showing up as being anemic following my most recent lab work. I was referred to a Gastro Intestinal Doctor to have a scope placed in my stomach to see if there was any evidence of internal bleeding? No sign of internal bleeding however it was noted that my red cell count, white cell count and platelet were all three running "low" I am now going to see a blood specialist at the local cancer Center this coming Wednesday to try to determing the cause of these low readings???? Has anyone out there experienced this problem after lap band installation????

    Is this really real?

Zoe is so right! I lost 10lb in the first 5 days then nothing for another 2 weeks! A lot of water gone. Everyone keeps complimenting me on how great my complexion is and how bright my eyes are. That's what 2 litres of water a day and no bread can do for you I guess!

    Not Sure

I have noticed in the last 3 weeks the weight stopped coming off. I am do for my first fill on March 8th. I am doing the mushy food and not going to try the next food group if this is causing me not to drop. I got on scale today (AM) and it said 242 and tonight just wanted to see it is back up to 245 I know that fluids during the day will cause increase. But I seem to go for the fluids when the thought of food strikes me. I know I am only 5 weeks into this but... I live alone and all my life I figured go ahead and eat this or that Who will know. Well I do not think this way anylonger. So hoping after a fill that will help. Oh I sure hope it does. Karen

    New from south jersey

I am Lisa banded Aug 5th 3 weeks ago. I first went to Virtua and sat in and listen to the doctors one of them Dr. Goldstein. It was to much money for me with the gym and all the other stuff out of pocket. My ins covered 100% for my surgery but not the other part with the nurses and stuff. So I went and asked my family doctor who told me to go over there in the first place and she said I have another Dr I want you to see too and then see what you want to do. So I went to Kennedy in Stratford and saw Dr. Balsama and went to one of there seminars and I liked it better there for myself. I felt more comfortable...I don't know why but I did. I hear Dr. Goldstein is very good. So I went though all the tests and everything was done over at Kennedy. Everyone there was so wonderful. I was banded 3 weeks ago and so far down 12 lbs and so far everything is good. I go for my first fill in 4-5 weeks. You should go for it and I have heard very good things about Virtua...that was my first stop. I just didn't have the money for the program. Good luck to you and keep me posted please. It fels great to talk to people who are doing the samething. Lisa also South Jersey:redface:
  20. I was thinking about this today. Because I have to do optifast pre-op, I was wondering if anyones stayed on optifast post-op as their liquid phase after surgery. I'll ask the Dr when I go in next week but if anyone has done this, I'd be grateful for info.

    Just got insurance approval!!!

check into things, perhaps you will find a highly recommended surgeon who has openings in his schedule. My surgeon was very highly recommended, and I was still able to pick my surgery date. he was booked for a week after my consult, but i had no problem scheduling at my convenience beyond that week. LET THE INSURANCE PAY!! Save the money and buy yourself a skinny vacation for your first goal celebration!!! Good luck to you.

    Instructional Video???

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any information on an instructional video or tutorial of some sort that I could give to my Doctor. He is willing to learn how to do my fills and handle my post-op care, and nothing would thrill me more. It will save me hours on the road...since I would have to drive at least three hours to the nearest fill doc. Also, he is willing to charge me for a regular office visit. Would love any feedback!:help:
  23. I've been scheduled for hernia repair this week. What can I expect recovery wise? I saw my surgeon he ran some tests today and is scheduling surgery for Wednesday. I don't even know if I will be back on a liquid diet or mushy foods? How much time do I need off of work ?

    Group Meeting

Last night's meeting was okay. A few people made some really ignorant comments and wasted alot of time. The meeting is only 45 minutes and the instructor had to rush through the last part of it to get everything in. One lady brought her boyfriend and he must have been high or something cause he was talking off-the-wall and nothing he said made sense. I hope next week's session is better. I have to go to the hospital on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week for the my psych eval, group meeting and for cardiac clearance. It would be nice if they could schedule the appointments on group meeting days, but that would be too easy. I'm okay with it because all I keep thinking about is having this surgery and losing this weight.

    Fluids In And Fluids Out

I had to ask my doctor this question, as 4 weeks post op I did contract a virus and became severely dehydrated as a result. I was told NO Imodium, and advised instead to purchase a probiotic from the pharmacy and continue to drink plenty of fluids. Yet another example of the differences in the medical opinions between doctors...
