Pre surgery diet struggles
deejay1383837872 replied to Jen GA Peach's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I don't know who your doctor is, but I went on a doctor directed modified South Beach diet. I ate as much meat as I wanted but no carbs but some greens, beans, brocolli, cauliflower. No peas, corn, etc. Keep your carbs under 40 a day, mandatory. I even ate out and had wine. I ate scrambled eggs for breakfast with cheese, omlettes, tuna, turkey breast, ham for lunch...even hambergers. Dinner was steak, fish, chicken, pork chops with veggies. I lost a pound a day and shrunk my liver by 50% I actually got a gold star on my picture of my liver that my doctor presented to me after surgery! I think your clinic is using the wrong approach...No breads or carbs....easy to do when you are eating meat and certain veggies. Please do not worry about surgery. It was the easiest surgery I have ever had. Next to no pain after the surgery. In fact, if it didn't irritate my stomach, I would have taken Advil instead of the liquid Oxycontin they gave me afterward. First week after surgery is great for me but the liquid diet. Got trying. Now I am on pureed food! I get to chew and have texture. Friday the 8th I go to mushy food! WooHoo! My surgery was on October 24 and I have lost a pound a day since then. Tonite I had pureed tuna noodle casserole. Yesterday, I had pureed stead, potatoes and gravy! Was tasty! -
My surgery is on Nov 18, started my liquid diet a week ago. I did ok the first 2 days. I'm not hungry, but I've been emotional eating. I'm worried that I'm not going to be able to lose enough weight & shrink my liver enough & my surgeon won't do the surgery. I had lost 5 lbs, but I still have 2 weeks. I'm supposed to have 3 meal replacement shakes & 1 high protein, low fat , low carb meal a day. Need some encouragement please!

diahrrea after surgery?????
lsereno replied to ScentsyLady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'd call the Dr. or nutritionist - you might be lactose intolerant following surgery. I am. There are varying levels. I can tolerate whey Protein, yogurt, and hard cheeses, but not milk or cottage cheese. I switched to soy milk in my Protein drinks and felt better. I still had diarrhea the first couple of weeks, but I had less gas and I went poo less often. Lynda -
Okay well first things first this is my first journal.. To start things off my name is melia and I have been over wieght all of my life.Although i have never been as heavy as I am now... So anyways I had never even heard of this surgery until my aunt and grandfather had it done.. They look wonderfull!! So now they both have it done now and this is how it all started for me, last christmas my grandfather pulled me asside and gave me a book on the lap band and told me that this is something that he and my grandmother wanted to gift me with.. I was speechless I think for the first time in my life..lol.. So now here Iam 2 weeks away from getting my own band.. Iam having this done in everett washington because that is where they had theirs done ,and also because it is one of the best places in the us to have this done at. I got to meet my surgeon and he is awsome very open honest ans straight to the point..ok well I'm going to end this for tonight i'm really sleepy.

Full or Eating too fast?
atontor replied to ladyfrann's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ty for responding but i know for sure that I do not have to go back to liquids..lol. I'm doing very well. I've never experienced nausea and have been able to keep everything done since surgery. I know it's a process with learning my sleeve & body's response. I just need to id this 1. Did you skip the purée food stage? Real food for me didn't happen until 6 weeks after surgery. When my NUT and Dr cleared me to do so after my 2nd post op visit. Next week makes 12 weeks and I'm down 81lbs so far. -
November Bandsters!
hokiemama replied to kittyfran's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on Nov. 15th and I am finally feeling "normal" again! The first week was hard. The pain in my stomach muscles were terrible. I had to sleep in a recliner because it hurt to lay all the way down in the bend. I thought I had made a mistake. Now, just 2 weeks later, no problems. Only a little tugging in my stomach when I bend. Otherwise, no pain and able to eat soft/mushy foods. 64oz. of fluid is hard to get in without surgery, much less when you've just had a band put around your stomach. Take it slow. It WILL get better!! Warm chicken broth and then reduced fat cream of chicken soup (with chicken chuncks picked out) were so tasty to me after only protein shakes and water. Hang in there! -
November Bandsters!

Hey Kitten, I was banded yesterday also, congrats to you! I feel better walking around as well, I've been lucky so far not too much gas pain in the shoulders. Some in the back on my port side though. I hear you about the sipping water too! Guess it just takes practice. I've been drinking warm decaf herbal tea too and that's felt good on my swollen belly. I too know it's temporary and takes time to heal, and better to follow dr's orders than to get impatient and do something that may hurt the band and my new stomach. Best of luck to you, and feel free to pm me if you'd like to buddy up Kfranco, sometimes peeps get nauseated by certain types of pain meds. Personally Vicodin makes me nauseated and doesn't do anything for me, so they prescribe me other meds. And it's tough sometimes when you can only drink liquids to take certain meds because "normally" you are supposed to take them with something on the belly. Are you allowed to have Protein shakes or Soups yet? That may help too. And I would check out btown girl's suggestion about checking with your doctor about nausea meds. Even though I've just been banded, I know people who've had this done and read a lot on here about the first few weeks and the overwhelming response is it DOES get much better!!! Best of luck to you Susan -

I'm 3 weeks post op and my doctor required me to take 6 weeks off! I think it may depend what your job is and plus I had my gallbladder out and a hiatal hernia fixed at the same time as my sleeve. -
Going on a trip post-surgery
hauntedhideaway posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello, I am having RNY on September 8th. On October 18th I am leaving town for a little over a week for 2 events: first, a work conference where food is provided. Then I will be spending the remainder of the week at my sister's, because that Sunday is my other sister's baby shower. Both are in the same city, so I didn't see the point in driving home for two or three days, then driving back. That's a LOT of time away from my kitchen. I am doing a lot of research into various foods, and I'm trying to figure out what I can make at home, but I don't quite have that down yet. But I'm worried about what will happen when I DON'T have control over the food in front of me. My sister will try to be as accommodating as possible (she's awesome like that), but I don't want to disrupt her family life by requiring she make me special meals, or be trying to make food while she's also making food in a small kitchen. I'm driving to their town, so I will have my car to take things with me. I'm wondering what foods/shakes/whatever I should be taking with me, and in what quantities? I should be on regular foods again, according to my surgeon. Any other suggestions for traveling? You all have been so helpful in the past! Thank you for being so generous with your time. -
I to have lost a lot of hair, I was taking Biotin but not enough, started taking 5000 mcg a day and have noticed it slow down right after a few weeks. It worked for me.
-
Yeahhhhh. I started loosing hair three months out (I was banded at the end of March). I wasn't loosing it in huge clumps or anything, but there was a lot coming out. I'd say about 30% total. I think I'm the only person that noticed though. I'm right at 6 months post-op and the hair loss is finally dying down. I still have more come out each day than I used to, but there's definitely less than a month ago, and whew I am relieved! I think most folks that see hair loss see it between the 3-6 month mark. I'm just glad it's slowing down. Nothing is going to stop it, but you may consider trying Biotin supplement and/or nioxin shampoo products. I have nooo idea if either helped or not... but I did both. I'm at the point now where hair is still coming out but I see new baby hairs sprouting up. Hope that helps. Try not to stress about it if you can help it.

I started losing my hair at the three month mark. It was coming out in clumps when I applied shampoo, conditioner and product or when I combed/brushed it or just even slept. Not to make light of cancer patients, but I felt like a chemotherapy patient. It stopped coming out in such large amounts after a couple of months. The hair loss was very noticable....in fact, my hairstylist mentioned that my hair's texture has completely changed. The hairs are now growing back. I have many Patches of two-inch-long hairs all along my hairline, part and pretty much everywhere. I changed to a shampoo/conditioner that was meant for weak hair. I also took Biotin about three times a week. When I asked my surgeon about the hair loss, he said it was a result of rapid weight loss. He also said the hair WILL grow back. The funny thing about taking biotin is that it accelerated the hair growth on my legs, armpits and bikini area (TMI?). Good times......:tongue2:

The pre op diet was super rough for me. If you Doctor lets you, drink tons of 1% or low fat milk mixed in with you unflavored protein and stay hydrated with lots of water. It'll all be worth it in a few weeks! Best of luck to you!

Here's something I copied from ButterTheBean (a veteran sleever): If your weight loss has stalled, read THIS. You are certainly not alone. I've been in a stall for 6 weeks. I thought I had it conquered at one point, but now I'm right back where I was, number-wise.

Yesterday marked my seventh month from VSG. It has been an interesting journey and one that is not close to being over. I am not sure what my current weight is because I am going to weigh myself tomorrow. As of last week I was 201 and my highest weight was 303 or 305. It is hard to describe the changes I have gone through. It almost seems unreal. Like, hey where did that collar bone come from. Or sitting with my legs crossed for a longer period of time. Being able to wear a size 14 swim suit. I am still very thankful for my sleeve and I look forward to hitting my goal weight. I think what I like the most is that I can feel my body getting stronger. How many of you are seven months out? What has surprised you so far?

I'm on my second day liquid diet. Day 1 was rough, but I got through it. Surgery day is March 6. Has anyone did the complete two weeks of liquid, and if so, how much weight did you lose.

I’m one week today too (rny) and also had my gallbladder out. It sounds like you are doing great! I’ve still got some pain where my incisions are and a little gas but it’s much improved. I’m only taking my pain meds at night now. Stomach is a bit touchy at times but most things I’m tolerating. -

Hello all. I have had an obesity problem all my life - as does everyone in my family. Four members of my family have the band including myself. I also know several people with the band. I am the worst example out of them all. I was banded almost 3 years ago and have only lost 27lbs (267 to 240). I have struggled to work off every bit of that. I have been 240lbs for months now. I have a bowflex, free weights and an elliptical. I exercise 2-4 times a week. I feel as if I am cursed. I have had 3 fills. I went in for another fill today, but I could not get the white Fluid down (stuff you drink for x-ray). The Doctor had to take it out and said I had to make do with what I had in me already. I have joined this site today to seek advice on losing weight. I would really like to get down to 199, but I would be very happy at 210.

Ok I keep looking at this and waiting for someone to reply... And so far no one ?? Your stuck with me It sounds like you just had the surgery.. The one thing that caught me by surprise is that it was such a painful experience and I had plenty of days wondering if I made the right move. I was really down for a couple if days. After about 3 weeks I felt like me again and that I was able to function normally. I guess what I'm say is hang on there it gets better

I was 13 weeks post op yesterday and doing just fine. But this morning, that is another story. I decided to have a scrambled egg with cheese and some ham. I have had this before with no problems. I usually have my 32oz of decaf tea with a scoop of unflavored Protein in it but this morning for some reason I wanted food. Well I made it and sat down to eat it and when I had about three bites left I ended up throwing up half of it, sorry if this is TMI. I have not thrown up at all since surgery and I did not like this. I am thinking that it is because I ate to fast rather than the food not agreeing with me? I know better than to eat fast but I guess I wasn't paying attention like I should have been. Now Sherman (my new tummy) feels awful and I am hoping this feeling passes soon. I had to cancel my gym date with my friend for this morning and I hate doing that. When you guys have experienced this do you just wait for it to pass?? Should I drink something or should I wait a it longer?? Right now I am just reading posts on here snuggling with my doggie. I hope everyone's day is going better than mine!
