    Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

I agree with the others. The best advice that my sister (who had her surgery three weeks before mine) gave me was to chew, chew and chew some more. Take your time and stop eating if it starts to hurt. You will learn your limits as you go. I found that black pepper was the culprit in my case and I stopped adding it to my food until 3 months after the surgery. Chicken, meat and eggs were particularly difficult for me. Yogurt (low fat) was my go to food. Also try to avoid drinking water for at least half an hour after you eat. It will be difficult at first but it will get better. Hang in there!

    Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

I agree with the suggestion to go back to liquids for a few days. It’s not uncommon for people to do this - we heal in our own time. And yes certain foods like eggs can be difficult to tolerate for some. I’d also talk to your surgeon just to be sure especially because of the pain. Oh, and being able to feel water go down, I get that at times & I’m three years post surgery. Only with water though & especially if it’s cool/cold. I also gurgle a lot - a very noisy digestive system.

How do I know when I'm done?

I think they would. I have to keep my protein high because of the protein absorption issue - hence the dietary change to counter the increase in calories from the increased protein. I hate protein shakes & I can taste even the flavourless protein powders making going back to a low calorie diet using shakes challenging. Plus the med is hormonal & my weight gain was always strongly linked to my hormones. I actually did reduce my calories initially to try to lose the kgs but it didn’t do anything. Sounds like what happened most of my life - ha! When I see my GP in a couple of weeks, I’m going to see if I can go back to a lower dose HRT & see if that helps. I’m actually experiencing more hot flushes & acne - boo - on the higher dose. Of course the gain could just have been my body settling again. It is only 2kg & I’ve been stable at this weight for 9 months.

How do I know when I'm done?

I thought my body had settled at a weight …then I proceeded to lose another 5lbs this summer. I’m 16 months p.o. At the upper end of a healthy BMI. At the lowest weight I have ever been as an adult. With my surgeon, I had actually said I’d be happy to get to 180. As of last Monday, I was 163.6. I’m not doing anything special. To me I’m at maintenance. I have my calorie goal around 1400. But really I just focus on the protein number. I don’t restrict what I eat, but do try and make better choices. I am getting a Tummy Tuck in a few weeks. Excited for that.

    4 weeks down!

I haven't tried immodium yet. Thank you! I had my gallbladder removed years ago, so that might be part of my issue as well. I'll talk to.my surgeon this week!

    Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

You probably just need to wait a bit longer before progressing to soft foods. Different surgeons have different post-op diets; mine didn't start soft foods until week 3 (scrambled eggs and ricotta bake are soft foods, not purees). Can you eat pureed foods like yogurt, pudding, refried beans (when I was in the pureed stage, I was told to puree even refried beans in a food processor until completely smooth)?

    Unable to vomit

I know I really would appreaciate that possibility, not just because of the possible tricky situations related to having had gastric bypass. I have had some stomach flu's and food poisoning's that really don't get better unless you get to empty the system. I'm just glad I have no plans for more kids. Nevermind my first pregnancy which was not pleasant with a long period of hyperemesis, the nausea and vomiting continuing up to 16 weeks. The next pregnancy, twins, was more than double the nausea and vomiting with having to wake up 1,5 hours before I needed to get up to work to take my morning meds, as as soon as I stood up, I would vomit, and if I ate anything, I would vomit too... The feeling I had, if not eased just a little by vomiting, would have made me completely unable to function. The problem was I was an over achiever, fresh out of Uni and was determined to work. However I could not eat anything during the day, because otherwise I vomited. Luckily I worked in a hospital, so after my shift I would ask an anesthesiologist to hook me up with iv liquids, haha. [emoji1] I was in so much of a ketosis for more than 20 weeks, pre op diet was nothing compared [emoji849]. Sent from my AC2003 using BariatricPal mobile app

How do I know when I'm done?

@Arabesque please may I ask you another question? If you went back to eating 800 calories a day for a few weeks and lost those 2 kilos (not that you want to or need to!) is it your instinct that they would just bounce back on?

    Goal!

I hit goal today, 10 months and 2 weeks after my sleeve. I feel very lucky. Best wishes and good luck to all of you - I could never have done this without you.
  11. I am still struggling almost 3 weeks out, but it does get better each day. I supplement with protein gel.

    Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

My guess is you're progressing a bit too fast and/or eating too much. You might try something simpler like a TBS of yogurt and see how you do, Scrambled eggs are notoriously difficult for people at first and the Ricotta Bake might also be a bit much for only 9 days post surgery. For comparison, some plans have you on full liquids for 2 weeks post surgery.

I REALLY hate PCOS...I feel defeated...

So I spoke with my PCP and I have an appointment to come in next week because some new and fun things are going on. So I'm noticing pain in my lower abdomen. Happens mostly when I go #2 and I didn't think much of it. Then it started happening at other times, and it would get so bad I couldn't take a full breath. And even the lightest touch on my abdomen would have me in tears. Can last anywhere from 5 minutes to almost an hour, then just goes away. Having nausea when I eat, and sometimes when I don't. She doesn't like the sound of that, so I need to see her and they can do an ultrasound in her office and refer me to yet another specialist if needed. I still have no restriction at all whatsoever, which surprised her. But we're still waiting on the results of my scope, and now this. She said the rapid weight gain and the pain and nausea could be related and she wants to get to the bottom of it.
  14. 5 weeks post op and a few situations where vomiting would have helped, feeling miserable for a good 1/2-2 hours, salivating and really nauseous but unable to produce anything other than foam and mucous fluids. Anyone else with the same problem and if so, is this going to last forever? Sent from my AC2003 using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. Is anyone else having trouble sleeping. I am almost 3 weeks out and my sleep is horrible. I never had insomnia before.
  16. that's about where I was at seven weeks out. Sounds like you're doing fine!

    Medications

I was allowed to swallow anything smaller than a pencil eraser right after leaving the hospital - which for me meant all but two pills. One was calcium tablets, so I just got chewables. Can't remember what the other one was (it's been over seven years), but the PA at my bariatric clinic said it would be OK to wait for a couple of weeks to start taking those - and by that time, I should be able to swallow them. He was right.

  19. The stats are averages & based on your weight after three years. With sleeve or bypass the average weight loss at that point is around 60/65% of the weight you had to lose to put you in a healthy weight range. It reflects factors such as bounce back weight gain, lifestyle changes, complacency, health changes etc. It’s not necessarily the lowest weight you’ll reach, or even where you’ll settle. It’s just gives you a bit of an idea. Some exceed it others don’t reach it. And as @ShoppGirl said your new set point will most inform of where you settle. Personally, I chose my goal as this was the weight I always dropped to before gaining again. It also put me in a healthy weight range (if you use BMI as a guide). Most choose a weight that was where they once were or think they’d like to be. No scientific reasoning at all. I passed my goal but I’m an outlier - someone who doesn’t fit the stats. I didn’t work at losing that much it was just where my body settled. My lowest was 48.2 but settled at 49kg. A medication change & a needed dietary change & I’m at 51kg & have been there for about 9 months. (Would prefer to be 49 but … you know life.) I think setting benchmarks for along the way like you’re doing is a great idea. If you set a final goal make it a ‘it would be nice if I got to that but I accept I may not & that’s okay’ goal. Congratulations on what you’ve achieved so far.

How often do you guys weigh yourselves?

I do every morning after morning pee in my underwear. I log in my computer . I like the fact I can see progress and if do not loose any then I try to do a bit more walking and do not over think it. I do know there will be times when I will stall and then drop again. Think long term and not short term. From 265.5 lbs two week before surgery and 250 day of surgery and today I'm at 242.8 lbs. 11 days after. I'm happy where I am and will continue to travel down my weight loss journey....

    October 2022 surgery support

I'm a day behind you, surgery on the 4th and started liquids diet the 20th. Sounds like we have a lot in common, started the process late August of last year, its been a journey for sure. I don't think the one little slip up will hurt your progress any. The nerves are really starting to get to me too, even my anxiety meds aren't even helping anymore. I'm having an issue getting my pain management dr and surgeon to communicate so that's added to the stress, the pain management dr wants me to stay on what I'm on then the team can add to it accordingly after but surgeon wants me off of it and didn't tell me till less than 2 weeks before which isnt enough time to taper off so im definitely losing some sleep over it, unless I either disobey the surgeon and stay on it and avoid being in withdrawal or follow the pain management drs orders and stay on them and let them add on. If neither respond to me and let me know what they decided I'm going to have to make a decision to stop taking them tomorrow and deal with the withdrawal till surgery day or stay on, message the surgeon and tell him I've decided to keep taking it and pray he doesn't cancel my surgery. I never imagined this whole process would be so stressful

    Severe complications

Hi! First time poster here. It's a bit long but I really need help. I had gastric sleeve on 6/22 in Mexico. It went well, passed my leak tests and left feeling good. A week after I got home, I had severe pain and went to the ED where they discovered a leak. They did surgery that night but were unable to reach the leak as it was "too high on my esophagus. " they also discovered 2 abscesses that were between my stomach and spleen. They were unable to remove the abscesses due their location. I spent 28 days on a feeding tube in the hospital. The plan was to wait for the leak to encapsulate/close which it eventually did. I came home on long term antibiotics and 4 days later I ws in severe pain again so back to the ED where I was diagnosed with a complete bowel obstruction. I had a my 3rd surgery in 3 months that night. Went home and a month later (2 weeks ago) I had pain so bad in my left lower side that made breathing/coughing/vomiting extremely painful. Back to the ED where I found out the abscesses had infected my spleen and it is now half dead/ dying. It will be removed but the surgery team is holding off due to the inflammation and scar tissue in my abdomen. I was discharged a week later with a PICC line and I receive IV antibiotics at the hospital daily. My question is has anyone heard of this many/similar complications? I'm considering getting a second opinion at a different hospital but I don't even know where to start! Thanks for reading.
  23. You will work on changing your relationship with food. You don't have to give everything up, just moderation. If you are on day one, I am so impressed. I was a mess my first three days.

    September surgery buddies!!

I'm 24 days post op and on my best day I'm still getting maybe 54oz of liquids. I think it took me 2 weeks to get to 40oz. I didn't have to get fluids, but I do use electrolyte powder a lot to prevent dehydration.
  25. I was fortunate. Liquid for a week, pureed for five days, today started soft foods (although I started it yesterday). I am sick today though. I don't think it is surgery related but not sure.
