I see various threads a times where people give the advice to "find a surgeon who is an expert with revisions". So, there is a surgeon in my area that I have found many speak very highly of, however, I can't get his office to give me any specifics on the number of each of the procedures he has done, including revisions and what type of revisions he has done. I sent another email Friday asking what the status was of getting me this information. In the meantime, I have contacted Medical Records for the hospital he works for (considered a COE), they said it was confidential information. I also called the COE affiliation and they said that the only thing they could tell me was that in terms of procedures that one of the minimum requirements was that they perform at least 50 WL surgeries per year and that they do on-site inspections every 3 years....but that was about it. Same basic story with the state medical board..... Soooo.... as I continue my Quest for a revision I am now at a point where I need to find a surgeon who is an expert with revisions. I feel its a red flag if I can't get a straight answer from this surgeon's office even if there are others who speak highly of him. It makes me concerned that they either A) they are simply too busy to be bothered with such questions Maybe also understaffed in the office or C) maybe they don't really want to release that information - for WHATEVER reason. Either way, I need to feel that my surgeon and his office are forthwith and responsive to questions. It's been a week this Monday since I asked this question from his office and NOTHING, not even a follow up. Ok, so back to my original question- how does one find an expert / competent surgeon, and in my case a revision WLS surgeon?!?!?!????? Thanks for any/ all suggestions.

Finding Revision Experts
Tiffykins replied to former_vbg's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I didn't even bother asking the staff. I requested a consult with the surgeon then I asked all the tough questions. My surgeon had not performed a lot of band to vsg, but had quite a few band to RNY and flat out band removals so I was confident in his skills. I really went with personal testimony, and then called different offices in several different states and contacted a couple of surgeons in Mexico in the event of insurance had not come through for me. I contacted surgeons specifically in Dallas, TX because I have family in the area. There aren't any great revision surgeons in Florida, so I knew I would have to go where I felt I would be best taken care of. I would share those same concerns, and I hope they get back with you. I would say a 5-7 business day turn around on emails is more than realistic, and if you don't get answers then move onto another surgeon/office.. COE means diddly squat most cases. My band surgeon had COE yet violated every HIPPA law with my med records, got his partnership stripped and title of "director of bariatrics" with the hospital stripped from him shortly after I left his practice and filed complaints about his practices. -
Finding Revision Experts

I found my doctor because he was the only one who would take me on and revise my band with all it's complications. I knew of the complications because of several scans run in the Emergency Room from the pain I had. Every other doctor I called said no. I asked him personally and he and his staff were upfront with his stats. I have not had any complications post op. If you are in the Houston area, I can give you his name. Good luck! -
Some data and information on gastric plication
TijuanaPlication replied to mednar's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
BTW as you're a revision Donna, you may lose more slowly. Hip on VST is a band to sleeve revision and he was losing slowly. This post here gives some clarification as to why revisions lose more slowly http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/ds/4375541/Unproven-hypothesis-about-why-2-part-DSs-are-less-effective/ The summary of the post is that it's because you've already had some weight loss and your metabolism has compensated by slowing down. Donna, please don't feel I'm trying to rain on your parade, I just want you to have as much info as possible before you proceed. I wish you all the best with everything and keep us posted! -
Now I'm worried!!! The surgeon sent in my paperwork to Cigna and they sent a letter that they want more info - AND - they mentioned about me qualifying for an outpatient procedure. There is no way I can be "outpatient" - with the original surgery I had to stay overnight because I was too sick to go home the same day - With revision - the surgeon said to expect 2 days. I'm hoping that I don't have to go through the appeal process. I've done everything they required!! So upset

I've started the 90 day journey - I just attended my first support group meeting and next week have appointments with the nutritionist and psychiatrist. It stinks that we have to go through it all over again for revision surgery just because there are no serious complications - just minor ones.

At the beginning of the process I talked to my insurance company, Anthem BCBS of Michigan. They told me that there would not be a 6 month diet wait program requirement. With 40 BMI, revision I need for bad vertical band, and co-morbidities, my Dr. did not expect any problems either. Insurance just came back and said medical issues of band has nothing to do with WLS. If I was having band replaced, then they would approve now. But since I need revision to bypass, they want the 6 month documented weight loss trials. I have been admitted in hospital 2 times in last 4 months due to banding problems, and cannot see waiting another 6 months? Anyone else has this baloney? Any appeal on this that is possible? THX

Some data and information on gastric plication
chowchows replied to mednar's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
The scope part is interesting...I did not know that. I thought the only real revision plicators could have was the DS. I read that in several places. Can a plicator successfully revise to a sleeve? I figured all the scar tissue would prevent that, but maybe not. Edited to add: they are just discussing the revision to sleeve on VST, so I guess it can be done. -
newbie, slipped band, looking around
melissa71 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello everyone. I have been lucrking around since I found out my band has slipped. I was banded in 2009 and had steady weight loss. About 7 months ago I started having issues. I wont go into them becasue as far as I can tell well over half of you know what I am talking about. So my wonderful PA, Paul Marino, as a last ditch effort took some pictures (we thought it was a long list of other problems and not the band, I didnt have the classic slipped complications) And he almost fell over backwards when he saw the xray image. He was totally surprised. So we briefly discussed my options, remove, replace or revise to another procedure. Well I quickly said no to that! What??? You want to cut my stomach, thats not reversible?!?! How naive I was.!!! In the end you dont come out of the band without issues, scar tissue, damage to my vagus nerve......But then I did some true soul searching and I know that I have to have something. So I decided to check into the sleeve. I have a while to decide what to do. I am VERY impressed with the sleeve. I have been on this site, several times a day. I really want to be informed. I am learning a lot. I want to know the good, bad and ugly truth. So you may see me asking questions that you have answered a thousand times over, and I apologize ahead of time for that. thanks for anything you are willing to share with me. I have a long list of questions, but I will attack one at a time. I think I will start with recovery time. Such as how long did people take off? I am a CT Technologist and work in a outpatient office, so there really isnt lifting just a lot of getting up and down. I was back to work a week after my LapBand. Thanks again, Melissa -
Can't sleep. I hate this band.

You will feel like a new person with a revision and at the worst at least your dreadful band will be gone. Get the nasty thing out I love my sleeve and it's the best. Good luck and sweet dreams when you get there -
Hi I currently have the band and am trying to decide if I should have the revision to RNY or sleeve. I struggle with constipation so need to know which one will be better for my constipation trouble?

Weight Loss and what to expect
JamieLogical replied to Caela88's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's really hard to tell for sure, especially since you are a revision and that may effect the size and shape of your sleeve. I have read that a lot of revisions from lap-band have scar tissue in their stomachs that their surgeons have to work around. The good news is, a LOT of the outcome of your surgery is in your control! If you stick to the plan, get your water, get your protein, get your vitamins, and exercise regularly, then you'll lose the weight. The sleeve is just a tool, remember. It's up to you how you use that tool to achieve success. -

What medical group are you with? And what insurance? Did u have to do the nutrition courses with the revision? Thanks for the prompt responses btw! I appreciate it. -
Dr Belzberg- at Kaiser South Bay, I love in Corona. Revising from a band to sleeve due to complications. Amazing dr, Kaiser has been awesome. I have only been insured with them for 2 months and no issue switching it out!

Sexymomma - Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! Why am I sooooo nervous??? It is not my first weight loss surgery! I had a lap band placed in 2006. Revised to the gastric sleeve just last year...July 2017 and now scheduled for the granddaddy of all RNY on September 26th due to extremely painful GERD! I can't enjoy the excitement of being scheduled because my head space has me hung up and all in my feelings! The strangest and most frustrating thing is I can't figure what in the HECK I'm even nervous about! Tell me there are others out there that have been on this emotional rollercoaster while on their journey's. I can't be the only one.....right???????

I had mine revised to a bypass. It was a huge relief and much better. Bypass is better than a sleeve if you are prone to acid reflux.

What do you think you did for a good recovery
tlah posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me although I was tempted by what other surgeons said I followed my surgeons to a t I wanted to feel confident when I was under. I started weight watchers to learn how to journal and what three ounces looks like, I picked up my working out in fact did a two mile power walk morning of my surgery. I took my protein to my last nut appt to make sure it was good stuff it wasn't easy with a 21 month old but its doable and I think that's why I'm having a great recovery. Exception gas but I knew going in that revision was higher for that. I have no gas either. So what helped you in case others are reading -
Revised from the VSG to the Bypass
Titaniumsleeved2014 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, everyone I'm new to the gastric bypass forum.... Long story short I had a few terrible complications with the sleeve that I received May 2014 and was just revised to the bypass March 16th. So I'm four days post-op and have some many questions and would really love some input and support..... Sent from my LG-H634 using the BariatricPal App -
I have Anthem BCBS, and I got denied for a revision, they said I am allowed one bariatric surgery per lifetime. They did not pay for my Lap Band, so I dont understand. I am gonna go talk to my Dr today he is supposed to do Peer to Peer review, I need this lap band removed, it has severely eroded and I vomit daily. I cant live like this anymore. I have severe apnea as well. Wish me luck!!!

Long story short...denied for revision from band to rny in December 2013. Insurance girl at Doc's office said we needed to re-do classes, psych eval, etc. Did this and got approval letter from NUT, Psych Dr, and Doc 2/7/13. Insurance girl didn't send in new clinical info to insurance until 2/26...after 10 business days I called Anthem and they said they had no new request on file. Called Doc office, insurance girl called me back and assured me they had everything. Still no word as of today...so I called Anthem again: a supervisor finally got on the phone and said there is no case pending. New clinical info doesn't do anything. the original request was denied -not medically necessary and now the only option is to have my Doctor call and have a peer to peer meeting to discuss, and/or file an appeal. (neither have been done.) Sooooooo in other words I have been waiting for NOTHING for nearly 2 months. I have to call my Doc's office Monday and talk to the insurance girl about scheduling a peer to peer meeting now. What is going on? Why would she not know this was needed? Why would Anthem continually tell me the case was pending when I called to check? I am soooooooooooo frustrated and depressed. Has anyone else ever been thru this?

Revision my best decision ever
Meredithmomof2 replied to Meredithmomof2's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Having the Lapband removed was the best decision I had made. Although Definitely look into the revision. I have a friend who had the sleeve done a year and a half ago and she doesn't discipline herself so she has already gained weight back. I had the RNY because of my diabetes and i'm 9 weeks out and down 63 lbs already It feels amazing not having to be on all of them stupid meds. It's definitely something for you to decide but I would definitely do it. -
Would You Get The Sleeve Again? If So, Why? If No, Why? Would You Change Anything?
funinthesun00 replied to rxkid2384's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Did you have a revision or were you a virgin sleever? My surgery is scheduled for January. Hunger and portion control are my 2 biggest issues. One of my fears is that I'll still be hungry after surgery. I am trying to eat a lot of Protein, I guess to help mentally prepare myself for the upcoming changes. Even when I get a lot of protein I am still so hungry. I am concerned because I feel like there is no way I can really be hungry because of all the food I've eaten, but I still feel hungry. I am concerned I will still have this feeling after surgery. Can anyone relate? -
Switching to Dr Aceves - Help!
MissMinnie replied to NewLife2011's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Congratulations. Dr Aceves did my band to sleeve revision in Feb. 2011. Like you I only had a very short time after I decided. Mine went great and I hope yours goes as smoothly as mine did. Just a note: I was scared to death. When Dr Campos removed the fill in my band I was so scared and he said not to worry that they take great care of their patients. I don't know if it made me less scared but it really was the truth, they all did a great job. Good Luck.... -
Muscle milk is delicious. I've never bought it in a powder though. I've had the chocolate ready made that I bought at costco and it's so yummy. I am going to look for this at GNC when I go out of town as we don't have a GNC here. I'm going to be on liquids again after my revision surgery.

Fresh OJ... Is this ok to put protien in?
Poorehouse posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know this may be stupid question but this sight has helped me so much! I am supposed to have band to sleeve revision oct 24th and in have to start a 2 week preop liquid diet, however the list of approved items included fruit, apple sauce, salad with fat free dressing only and hot cerel. NO meat at all. My question is after this diet I will still have to drink Protein drinks or put protein in drinks/food ad Kroger actually squeezes fresh OJ every morning and they do not put a thing in it. It is 100% just oranges squeezed - the NATURAL sugar content says 25grams but it is NOT added sugar or sweetener it is just naturally that sweet. To ME since they out absolutely nothing in it and it is straight orange I am considering that a fruit that I just don't have to peel! Am I crazy or do you guys think it would be ok to at least drink one 8 ounce glass with added protein in it a day? I figure the Vitamins in fruit couldn't hurt either. I hate fruit and healthy food but I do love that fresh squeeze OJ Opinions ...
