How long from when you started the process to surgery?
Anj0399 replied to BeaUTAHful's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My first surgeon visit was 12/2020 followed by my first PC supervised weight loss visit 12/2020. Endoscopy was 1/2021 along with blood work. Had psych evaluation and nutritionist appt in 3/2021. Last supervised visit was 5/20/2021. Insurance was submitted on 5/20/2021 and received the same day. My tentative surgery day is end of June/early July. So about 7-7 1/2months total. Did they say how far they are booked out? My surgeons office said about a month. -
What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
james2021 replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is how my surgeon's team does it --- 1. Find your 'ideal' body weight. For males, start at 100 pounds and add 6 pounds for every inch over 5'0. For females, start at 100 pounds and add 5 pounds for every inch over 5'0. For example, I am female & 5'6.5. My ideal body weight is 132.5. 2. Take your starting weight and subtract your ideal body weight from it to find your excess weight. For example, my starting weight was 355. 355 minus 132.5 is 222.5. 222.5 is my excess weight. 3. Take 70% of your excess weight (.7 times the number). 70% of my excess weight is 155.75. Between sleeve and bypass, about 70% excess weight loss is what they told me to expect. 4. Subtract the 70%, or in my case, the 155 from the starting weight of 355. This gives me a realistic goal weight of 200. -
Lying about not getting surgery is awful
Anj0399 replied to GinormousReislin's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My weight was down about 7 years ago when I was diagnosed with Lupus and put on meds that actually made me lose a lot of weight. I went from 235lbs then to 178Lbs due to nausea and sleeping all the time for months. Family and friends noticed but knew it was from my meds. Of course I have gained it all back plus 40lbs so I know I’ll be questioned how I lost weight once again. I don’t want to tell certain family members about WLS because I am not close with them/get along with them and don’t feel I owe them an explanation. How did you manage keeping your weight loss private from those you do not want to discuss it with? I’m so nervous about it and don’t want to lie to them but feel it’s none of their business. Any suggestions? -
Lying about not getting surgery is awful
catwoman7 replied to GinormousReislin's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
actually, weight loss surgeries WERE very risky 25 years ago! I think that's what a lot of people are remembering when you tell them you had it. Techniques have improved drastically since then -- they're much safer now than they were back then. -
What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
ThanaK posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I’m about 8 weeks post op with slow steady weight loss. Now that I’m relatively healed and I’m almost eating normal foods again it’s time to thinking ahead to goal weight. I’d like to get to a healthy goal weight. I’ve been overweight most of my adult life so I don’t really know what that is having never really experienced it. Should I be thinking of BMI? Healthy BMI for my age looks like a very low weight for my height and body frame. For those of you who have lost the weight already, how did you know that you had reached your goal? Was it how you felt? How you looked? Looking for some guidance as I navigate my weight loss journey! Thanks. -
no - but I'm always a little leery of weight loss gimmicks

Is duodenal switch too drastic?
seababe25 replied to Bon Bon Jovi's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Hi I spoke with several surgeons prior to my duodenal surgery and two of them swayed away from the sleeve bc they said most people that do the sleeve end up eventually coming back to get the bypass surgery because the sleeve doesn’t last. If you cheat which most of us do from tune to time, stretches it out. Then you end up getting two surgeries first the sleeve then the bypass, spending double the $ and increasing your odds of going under twice. So that’s why the sleeve is just a waste of time because eventually it wears off and you end up wanting a procedure that will last. So at first I planned on doing the bypass but then I heard although not that many people promote the DS bc they don’t do it, it’s better than the sleeve because it lasts the longest and gives the most weight loss. And...it was modified so it’s not as bad with absorption as it once were. So your doctor may have also asked you questions to see the pattern of your weight gain. For me I could lose 90 but then it always came back with additional gain. At the rate I was going I was afraid I would continue to gain and I was. The surgery adds years to our lives and eliminates diabetes etc...so for me adding years to my life so I can be there for my kids mattered most. I had surgery on May 12th, 2021 two weeks ago and I’m already down 17 pounds with no excercise. I’m feeling better already. My starting weight was 289 and for years I was 145-150 but then it kept creeping higher after every diet...You can’t go from a bikini and running 4 miles a day to being that heavy without becoming super depressed. I knew if I didn’t just go for it before I had really bad health issues than I may never get the chance. My only regret is I didn’t do this earlier. I’m still recovering but I know the sacrifice was the only choice I had left. Get the switch but get it from a reputable highly rated doctor not one who just wants more $. My doctor in Orlando was very confident and told me he had done thousands of the modified DS all with success. His confidence was key. Then I prayed and out my trust into God and my surgery went great. Good luck -
Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)
SummerTimeGirl replied to SummerTimeGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
UPDATE: No new changes, really. Stomach feeling better and better each day. Still sleeping on my back. Had my one week checkup today which just amounted to the doc (one of his associates as my surgeon was not available this week) checking my stomach and asking if I was doing ok with fluids and my meds. He said the first visit they just concentrate on recovery but during my next visits they will start concentrating on weight loss and hitting goals. He said the tugging and burning I feel inside when I do try and lay on my side or move certain ways is normal and that it will be that way for a while. Said wearing a binder MAY help it feel better enough to allow me to sleep on my sides so I may try looking for one. But he said no turning or anything I do can hurt my insides so that at least was reassuring. I also forgot to mention in the beginning of this post that my surgeon took pics while he was doing the surgery and gave them to me. I think there are like 6 or 8 views of my stomach before and after, my gallbladder, liver, a hernia he found, etc. LOL He said my gallbladder looked healthy and he did see a small hernia around my belly button but did not think it was gonna be an issue so he didn't touch it. Hopefully that won't become an issue later cause I think I'll be mad he didn't fix it while he had the chance. -
I lost 16 lbs the whole first month, and I started at 373 lbs. Most of us seem to lose around 15-25 lbs the first month, and those are with virgin surgeries, not revisions. And your surgeon is right - revisions tend to be slower - so suffice it to say, your loss is absolutely normal.

Plastic Surgery Countdown is on!
ms.sss replied to kristieshannon's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
...Also, don't forget about some exercise to help things firm up a bit (and stay that way-ish). The weeks/months immediately after weight loss phase I thought I was pretty flappy/gaunt/saggy pretty much everywhere. The plastic surgery 6-7 months into maintenance helped alot of course, but I also think the regular exercise I was doing during that time was also a factor. Case in point: my inner thighs were much firmer-looking around 3-4 months into maintenance, but now, after several months of minimal exercise, I am alot flappier there again. Sigh. Although I am about 3-4 lbs less than what I was after plastics 1.5 years ago, so that may also be a factor?? *shrugs* -
This is so frustrating for me right now. I am 3 weeks post op and have only lost 12lbs. And most of that was my first week after surgery. I lost 38 before surgery. I am following my diet and now exercising daily. At what point should I be concerned or consult my nutrition team? Should note, this was a revision RNY which my doctor said I might not have a great weight loss from.

Taking prescribed medication straight after VSG surgery
lizonaplane replied to aussiescot's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yeah, I don't have an option to not take my pills after surgery; the surgeon said just not to take a few that might be affected by the surgery, but I've actually already stopped those for other reasons. I was taking a medication for nightmares that is actually a blood pressure medication and he said I would need to stop that for a bit, but I decided to see what it was like to stop taking it, and I haven't noticed any difference in my nightmares (blood pressure has always been fine). I was also taking metformin for weight loss (still don't have diabetes) and he said I would need to stop taking that, but my doctor never refilled my script for that, so I haven't been on that for a while anyway. I'm losing weight now and I wasn't when I was on it. -
some plans are low carb, some are ultra-low carb, others really don't focus on carbs at all (like mine). I never counted carbs - I just had to be sure mine were the healthy kind (fruit, vegetables, whole grains). And yes - weight loss slows down quite a bit after the first couple of months - but stick with the program. It took me 20 months to lose all my weight, but it's G-O-N-E!

This is your first stall, possibly first of many. No worries. I found drinking my protein helps while also adding to my hydration needs (I like Premier shakes). My struggle still (8 months out) is staying hydrated which is key to weight loss and good health. Keep going! Sent from my SM-N970F using BariatricPal mobile app

Does gastric sleeve make Cyclic vomiting Syndrome worse?
ambcoen replied to Nellie D Perron's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I have cvs, have had it around 5 years now. I just found out from my friend that our insurance might cover weight loss surgery for me. I started gaining weight before I got cvs, but now its been more the last couple of years. I sometimes blame medication, but I started gaining before I started taking preventative medication for cvs. I have episodes way less because of medication, and I added the mito cocktail to my regimen(vitamins) and now even less episodes. Im afraid to change anything that might make me sick again. I haven't spoken to a dr yet, bit just doing research on it. I also noticed in some of my cvs support groups that there are a few who've had weight loss surgery and are way worse, or they didn't have cvs until after surgery. Please any info or insight would be appreciated. -
Gastric Sleeve and Reflux
StratusPhr replied to Lori E's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Have you had the revision? If so, what do you think so far? I'm in the same boat you were. Great weight loss, surgery was in 2010, but the GERD has gotten progressively worse. Non-cardiac chest pain, trouble swallowing sometimes, I'm on a prescription PPI and it was helping but I'm back to eating Tums again. When I finally decided to see a doctor I was eating 8 -10 Tums every day. I had no idea it was a bad thing until I read it somewhere!!! I suspect the appointment with the bariatric surgeon next month will give me an idea of what the solution is. I was self pay when I had sleeve surgery. I hope Anthem BCBS will approve and cover whatever he thinks I should do. -
Your weight loss does start to slow as you get closer to your goal. Many of us find the last pound or two the hardest & slowest to lose - can take weeks. It’s because your caloric intake is getting closer to what your body needs to burn to function so closer to your maintenance point. I was never given calorie goals or told how many carbs I should have either. I was told portion sizes, to avoid carbs where possible & definitely no high processed carbs. Besides fruit & vegetables my carbs from less obvious sources like yoghurt or cheese, etc. The only obvious source of carbs were rolled oats (one serve lasted me 2 or 3 days so only about 10g each time I ate them). If you’re worried, ask your dietician/nutritionalist to review your diet.
-
I would ask your nutritionist. At 4 months out my nutritionist had me on a 600-800 calorie and 60-80 carb diet plan. But every person is different and so is their plan. Also, my weight loss slowed after 3 months. The first three months I lost fast. Then the following three months I averaged 8 pounds a month. The next 5 months following that I averaged 5 pounds a month. My average lately is about 3 pounds a month. I'm 16 months out now so my diet plan is 900-1200 calories and 80-150 carbs per day (I try to keep my carb intake around 90 and my calories no higher than 1000 (though some days it HAS gone close to 1200). Also, my daily sodium allowance is 1200mg, but I try and get under 900mg because I retain water like CRAZY!

4 months post op as of May 20th. I have spoke with my doctor on calorie intake, but I’m curious what others are/where consuming at this time. Especially carbs, my doctor doesn’t like to give me a particular amounts because she says it depends are where they are coming from. For example she says I shouldn’t be too focused on the carbs that come from fruit which I understand but would still like to know a general amount. I also feel like my weight loss is starting to slow down. Lol I’m constantly stressing myself out about all of this.

1) unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life", your weight loss so far is very normal. Most of us lose 15-25 lbs in the first month after surgery. Yes - you will find people who lose more or less than that, but they're the exception. You're in that range, so you're perfectly normal! 2) you're in the infamous "three-week stall". Almost all of us go through that. It's not ALWAYS the third week, but it is for most (hence the name) - but it can really happen any time within the first 4-6 weeks after surgery. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale if you need to. It'll last 1-3 weeks, and then you'll be on your way again. If you want to read more about it, do a search on this site for the three week stall. You will find about 17,000 posts on it (and no, I am NOT kidding...). It literally does happen to almost everyone. No changes necessary - just stick to your program and wait it out. It WILL break. oh - just re-read your post. Thirty grams of protein is too low. Most surgeons recommend at least 60. So THAT is a change you should make. Otherwise, you're good. Just hang tight!

Weight loss stall
WishMeSmaller replied to Cajunincheesetown's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Sounds like you need more protein (at least 60 g per day) and more water/liquid (at least 64 oz per day). If you can, talk to your nutritionist to come up with good parameters that are personalized to suit you. Also, 22 pounds is pretty good weight loss so far, so do not stress too much about that. Focus on nutrition and following your surgeon’s plan/guidelines. Good luck! 😊 -
I have only lost 22 lbs, since surgery on 4/13/21 the past 10 days have been no weight loss. Can eat more things now, but wondering if I need to go back to 90 grams of protein per day- right now I’m at 30-60 and eat a small meal at night. Haven’t had sugar in a long time. Haven’t been drinking much water either. Any thoughts out there?

Any April 2021 surgeries?!
Erinleigh replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m so nervous about calories at this point. My dr told me to go to 800 calories but I feel like it’s too much and might stall my weight loss? Am I being neurotic about this? So many people are doing 600-650 calories a day, even a year after surgery. (My surgery 4/21, HW: 206, CW 180.6) -

I just had my 5 week check up and dr told me that with the rapid weight loss it makes your body tired, it's fighting it. Other than that all is good with me 😁
