Meal ideas and do's and don'ts for food ?
PleaseDeleteAccount replied to PleaseDeleteAccount's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, thank for all the examples, I will put this to use immediately. I basically eat farina/cream of wheat in morning , a premier shake for snack , tuna or some eggs for lunch, Oykos zero yogurt for snack, and either flounder or chicken for dinner so that does get very old to me especially if I'm not good in the kitchen. Those sugar free ice pops are a life saver though LoL Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Super Bowl: Ideas for a Healthier Menu
BaileyBariatrics posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
The Calorie Control Council estimates that the typical Super Bowl fan can consume at least 2400 calories and 121 grams of fat during the 4-5 hour football game. Patients who had bariatric surgery are not typical. Your new lifestyle demands rethinking portions and the types of foods that are available to you. Chips and dips are frequent guests at Super Bowl gatherings. These are basically fat and salt. There are bariatric friendly versions you can make a part of your lifestyle. Try using hummus, refried beans or a healthy version of Ranch dip as a menu item instead. A bariatric friendly Ranch dip is thoroughly mixing a 5.3-ounce container of plain, fat-free or low-fat Greek yogurt, 1 tablespoon of low-fat mayonnaise and 2-3 teaspoons (or to taste) of powdered Ranch Dip mix. You can use crackers like Ritz, Club or Saltines as dippers if you are on the soft and puree food part of the post-surgery diet. Once you can have fresh veggies, think about using bell pepper strips, snow peas, cucumber or carrot sticks or slices to dip in the Ranch dip. If you’d like more Super Bowl ideas, check out the www.bariatriceating.com website. Click “recipes” and check out “Super Bowl Food.” That Southwestern Bean Dip is super easy and looks delish. Hope your team wins! -

Worst Part @ 1 Week Post-Op: Medication
AGreenEyedWolf replied to Didjit's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Did your doctor tell you to crush your extended release meds? Because my understanding is that extended release meds lose their time-release abilities if crushed. My surgeon said cutting mine in half was about as much as I could alter it without losing its effectiveness almost entirely. Also, if your surgeon DID okay crushing it, I suggest putting it in something other than a clear liquid for swallowing purposes... like if you are on full liquids right now, you could try disguising it in yogurt or pudding to make it easier to swallow. Ok I had surgery on 1/26 and honestly I know they tell you have to drink 64oz Water daily and to try and to have things like yogurt, cottage cheese, Protein shakes etc. But I can hardly get anything down. I literally have like 4 small spoons of yogurt in the morning is that enough? And at lunch maybe some broth a couple spoons as well. Last night was he first time I was able to drink some of a Protein shake. Is this normal? It will get better right? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I've been worrying about that too... I'm still on full liquids and don't have much restriction at all... and everyone says well wait till you get to the puree stage... but in my head, pureed food isn't much different in consistency than pudding or yogurt, so I don't know how I'll feel then (I do have more restriction with those things than with clear liquids, but really not a whole lot).

I had my surgery June of 2015 - so I'm in your range. I'm in maintenance and eat 1200-1400 kcal a day. I malabsorb Protein, so I make a double Protein shake every morning and sip on it all day. So that's like 200-300 calories right there, depending on what I put in it. Then I usually eat around 200 kcal for Breakfast, around 300 or so for lunch and dinner. I often have a snack in the evening, too - like yogurt. If I didn't do the protein shake, I'd probably have a couple of low-calorie Snacks during the day, like a hard-boiled egg or one of those Fit & Light Greek yogurts. I'm not a gym rat, but I try to get to the gym 2-3 times a week (mostly strength-training and/or Water aerobics). I also go to a yoga class 1-2x a week.

IBS-D problems?
Hoping052017 replied to Hoping052017's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@biginjapan I'm going to miss cereal a lot. Especially grape nuts! And honey nut cheerios! I can live without the others. And I'm with you on the cheese. I love white cheese! Especially one from Kerry gold called Dubliner. Omg it's the best cheese I've ever eaten. And cottage cheese I could live on. If I couldn't have those and yogurt is be in big trouble. Just out of curiosity, do you have a problem with raw vegetables causing flare ups? One week! So excited for you! On a totally unrelated note...I want to go to Japan so badly. One day I will get there. The country had always fascinated me. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using the BariatricPal App -
IBS-D problems?
biginjapan replied to Hoping052017's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@Hoping052017: My surgery is a week from today! I leave Japan on Saturday for L.A., where I'll spend a few days recovering from jetlag and doing a little sightseeing and shopping (while on liquids only for the final days before surgery). My favourite "terms" are not mine - these are medical terms that my gastroenterologist(s) have used. I just remember hearing (or seeing) them for the first time and thinking - that's me! As for dairy, although I'm not lactose intolerant (I think), I cut out drinking milk a few years ago when I experimented with going gluten free (for Cereal, which was cut from my life). Although I was amazingly free of any problems, that only lasted a month. However, I never went back to drinking milk (or eating cereal). Now my only dairy really comes from yogurt or cheese, which I thought didn't give me problems, but I guess they did since I'm having no issues now. We'll see how things go once I'm post-op. (I've already bought cheese in anticipation). I'll be gutted if I can't handle cheese, since that seems to be a common item for most people pre-op due to its Protein content. Our stats are really similar - we're even the same weight at this very moment! I'm an inch taller than you though. -
Sleeved in November, just diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma
Clementine Sky replied to Kumbaice's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
*Hugs* I think most people would be riddled with anxiety and more likely to graze. You are probably doing so both out of self-comfort and a way of distracting yourself. If feasible, go on a walk, watch a TV show, take a relaxing bath, read a book, text with friends, engage in a hobby - anything to give your mind something else to do for a few moments instead of worrying. One of my colleagues began using adult coloring books as a way of coping with a distressing health diagnosis. It sounds a bit odd, but it's something that's soothing and keeps your hands busy so you're just munching away. Keep healthy food on hand that you can graze on if necessary. For me, when I'm stressed out having a good snack helps to prevent with grazing. A yogurt that is high in Protein and lower in carbs, like Siggis or plain Fage (add a few berries in) or cheese cubes and nuts can be more filling, so you're less likely to have the room in your tummy to graze. Drinking Water, Crystal Light, tea, and the like might help as well. Once you get your treatment plan I think knowing how you're going to proceed will be a comfort. Definitely talk with your oncologist about having the VSG and your concerns about your weight. Congratulations on your success thus far. You should be proud of yourself. -
I usually only eat fruit along with cottage cheese or Greek yogurt, never by itself or I add fruit to a vanilla Protein smoothie. I also like to sprinkle some nuts on my Greek yogurt & my fruit for extra protein. So no it's not good to eat fruit alone without protein but fruit eaten with protein is more satisfying. When I eat oatmeal I can't eat over a 1/2 cup of it which is a regular size serving anyhow. I know in the old days I used to eat at least 2 servings or more serving sizes like I did everything else when I over ate. Lol What helps to tolerate it even though it's a healthy carbs is add nuts to it like pecans or walnuts. If it's instant oats don't use Water to cook it in but some kind of milk & after cooked add the nuts & even a 1/2 sliced banana or fresh blueberries or strawberries. Or after the oatmeal's cooked to make it taste like a no bake cookie, I stir in a little mire milk to cool it some, then add a scoop of chocolate Protein powder, some peanut powder (9g. Protein & less fat than peanut butter) & chopped nuts of some kind. Yum! Sent from my VK700 using the BariatricPal App

First day liver shrinking diet/ New Airfryer!
lambypie posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i would definitely just like to start off by saying I bought the airfryer today, and this thing is the coolest thing ever. Not only does it look like a Futuristic Egg incubator, but the food is delicous. So I started my liver shrinking diet today. Ive had a headache since around 1pm. but i can't help but say how my excitement makes this headache seem so small! I've taken all my measurements and i'm hype. So on the liver shrinking diet I can have 2 protein shakes, four ounces of chicken, a yogurt, and unlimited non starchy vegetables. So I wanted chicken nuggets so i cut up a four ounce raw chicken breast into little tiny pieces( and did absolutely nothing to them, no seasoning or breading or anything!) and put them in the airfryer for about fifteen minutes on 380 and those babies got so golden and crispy, but the inside was tender and delicious. This airfryer is serious so amazing, i'm so happy i got it. I saw it as a gift and investment in myself and its time i start doing that more often. but 10/10 would recommend this air fryer. so healthy and delicious, -
Fellow Plant-Based Eaters, Let's Post! (CHALLENGE)
vegbeth replied to talkingmountain's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
It seems like other micronutrients available in plant foods are completely neglected. As for protein: I don't know how much of the Protein I consume is actually absorbed with the MGB. Same for micronutrients. Since the sleeve is a restricted procedure I'm hoping I'm absorbing more of my protein and vitamins. I'm glad to be moving out of the puréed phase and into soft solids. This week I made homemade seitan and soy yogurt. Even getting a little veggies in, though that is what I miss most. I can only eat a few bites of veggies whereas before surgery veggies occupied most of my diet. I really do think once I hit the maintenance phase I'm going to cut back on protein just a bit to make sure there is enough room in my diet for veggies. -
So I'm 6 weeks post and really really dislike Protein shakes. Always have. I've found 2 favorite go-to that I have daily to get in at least 30 grams protein and actually love them. First is sugar free pistachio pudding made with fairlife milk and GENEPRO. It mixes very well since mix cold (I did not like Protein powder mixed in SF Jello personally) and makes 4 servings which I estimate I get 30-35 grams from one per day. Find your favorite flavor! Second is fage plain Greek yogurt with a scoop of Click Brand Mocha protein powder which gives me about 35 grams. I either have as a meal or a snack depending on the day. Looking for January 2017 sleevers
kar12345 replied to Destiny Vavrosky's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi! Sleeved 1/12/17. Finishing first week purée phase, 2 more to go. So far yogurt, made crockpot beef stew (just meat, onions and carrots), tried ricotta bake recipe, Protein pudding, and Panera turkey chili (a cup as take out, purée'd very nice - split into two meals). Not huge amounts, but tolerating well so far. Still 2 - 3 Protein drinks. Struggle to get enough water - it's a journey! [emoji2] -
I'm in the same boat at 4 weeks out. I don't feel full but if I eat even slightly too much it feels like a lump in my chest that won't go all the way down to my stomach. Not only that, but I even randomly throw up after eating or drinking Protein shakes from, I'm guessing, having too much. Too much is anything over 2oz. I use protein Water to sip on and I don't mind the shakes. Dannon makes a Triple 0 Oikos Greek Yogurt which has 15g protein and I can eat that without being sick. Cottage cheese and soft cooked eggs are also easy enough to get down. I'm also not getting my fluids down because they are uncomfortable and give me that sitting above my stomach feeling too:( I drink bone broth and I add collagen powder which has 6.6g protein to amp it up. For some reason I find hot beverages easier to get down than cold ones. I actually called my doctor yesterday because he wants me on stage 3 diet but I just can't seem to tolerate it. We'll see what he comes back with.

How will meals change

Returning to work

@@Charisma - I saw your greek yogurt post. I will say that I can easily eat 5-6oz of yogurt (5 months post-op) but if I eat 3-4oz of chicken I am totally stuffed - like I know my limit stuffed. You will get to that full feeling but for me - yogurt never made me feel FULL. I hope that makes sense. -
So I am still a bit worried because I can eat 5.4 oz pkg of Greek Yogurt and 1/4c cream of wheat Cereal which was my dinner tonight. Do you hit like a hard stop when you try to eat too much? Really need help with advancing food
sleevinpops replied to Jazzzyjay's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can also add Protein powder to you foods, they have both flavored and unflavored. Isopure has a zero carb, zero sugar powder and 1/2 scoop in yogurt will give 20 grams. Also Trimino has a 7 gram protein, no sugar no calorie flavored Water. You can find them on Amazon. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
6 days out and I'm able to drink a lot of water
AGreenEyedWolf replied to jovanmurphysr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a week post op and I'm glad you asked this question because I also don't have much restriction with most clear liquids - thicker stuff like jello & yogurt I'm done at 2 to 3 teaspoons - and my protein shakes I can't do more than 2 oz at a time (that could be the taste, though LOL)but water, tea, even tomato soup - just seem to go right down, no problem. I think most liquids move through the stomach pretty quickly (I've seen it in person on the monitor when I did my upper GI before surgery and my leak test after, LOL) but stuff with more "substance" or that is more "solid" stops in there to get digested so it's easier to drink than to eat. -
How will meals change
FindingCarrie replied to chunkymonkey123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have 3 meals and 2 to 3 Snacks per day. However, these snacks are not the bags of chips, candy bars or other garbage I would typically snack on. Now my snacks are 2 oz of cottage cheese, or 2 oz of yogurt...things like that. My meals right now are cooked veggies, but I have not progressed to meat yet. I pretty much time every meal and snack and force myself to eat around the same time because I am actually not hungry at all since surgery. I eat only to meet my Protein goals right now, not because I am hungry. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
