  1. I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with surgery at all. I've had LOTS of people tell me that they love what I've done with my hair, even if it hasn't been changed and it is a mess. I was chatting with my mom about it (it was some of our co-workers) and she said one of them was talking to her and said that he could tell something was different with me but he couldn't tell what it was. She told him I'd been losing weight and he said "That's totally it!" It's like this; I wear contacts most of the time. One time in school I wore my glasses (some of my friends didn't even know I had glasses) and one of my friends asked me if I changed my hair. She turned bright red when I wiggled my glasses on my face and she realized that's what it was.

    Exercise...when???

I was told to get walking immediately---cardio of any kind was fine as soon as I felt up to it. For weight/resistance training, I was green-lighted after the 4-week check.

    U.S. kids having obesity surgery

Thanks for sharing!! I am just glad that kids have options now. I would have LOVED to have gotten my band when I was younger and obese and have my weight problem nipped in the butt early on. I think the lap band for severly obese kids is wonderful--not the bypass however. Too dangerous for children IMO. ~Liz~ 03/10/06241/156/160 5'8''

    gall bladder

I can explain a little. Rapid weight loss can cause problems with the gallbladder. It can develop stones and/or sludge, or it could be neither and it just quits functioning like its suppose to. Symptoms can be painful right upper quadrant abdomen after eating fatty/spicy foods. Sometimes it doesn't even have to be a specific food. The pain can shoot straight through to the back, sometimes will cause the right shoulder/neck to feel sore. can feel like intense heart burn. The best part about it though, is people can live without the gallbladder and its a fairly easy organ to get rid of. So, what I would do is #1. Call the doctor #2. Get an ultrasound (ct does NOT show the gallbladder well enough for it to be diagnostic. Unless you have a huge stone that they could see, ultrasound is the best. #3. If the ultrasound is negative, do a nuclear medicine study with an ejection fraction . Thats what tests the function. Hope you get better soon!
  6. I would go back to basics: lean Protein and vegetables. Cutting out any empty carbs, alcohol, and anything that slides down easily. Not drinking while eating. It may be that the steroids and depo shot are really messing with your weight, but in that case switching to a bypass wouldn't change that unfortunately. Good luck to you. I wasn't trying to be sarcastic with my last post, I just meant that your sleeve is still there and they don't really stretch out so if it's not working you need to consider whether you are "eating around it" by eating stuff that goes down too easily meaning you don't get full. Another expensive major surgery won't fix your food choices when you already have restriction built in if you use it as intended. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  7. You can have a bypass after the sleeve. The sleeve started out as a 2 part procedure for patients who needed to lose weight before having the bypass. So many did well with it they didn't have to have a second operation. You may have to go through hoops with insurance but it is possible. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Head hunger

Skipping meals isn't a good thing. Pretty soon you'll notice that you'll quit loosing weight. Your body will go into starvation mode and it will horde fat. Eat on a schedule every day. There are apps for phones that you can set to remind you to eat. I don't know what your calorie intake should be for sleeve, I had RNY and for the first 3 months I was at 600-800 calories. I've had to increase that to 1000 to keep myself from stalling.
  9. I am going to be doing the sleeve gastrectomy in January and I couldn't be more excited! However, I have a particular and pretty specific worry that I wonder if any one else has had to deal with... My sister has had eating/workout disorders since she was a teen (now 33), and I have always tried supporting her and tried to get her help, but to no avail. I plan on staying with her/my dad while I recover and I worry that my extreme weight loss will exacerbate her disorders. I seem to do that already when I go and visit for a weekend (I think she is afraid of me judging her so she counteracts that with extreme working out and portion control). I wonder if anyone here has gone through this? My sister is of course outwardly supportive, but I feel like internally she is jealous (even though she would never ever say it), and wishes it was something she could do (she's not overweight at all, extremely fit). I am worried about telling her about my experiences, but she is a big support of mine. I don't want her feeling inadequate or insecure because of me. If you experienced this, what did you do? Did you tell them straight up how you felt beforehand or did you just avoid talking about your weight loss experience completely? Thanks in advance!

    What And How

Cool topic My story is pretty simple. I woke up one day in the spring of 2011 realizing my life was a miserable trainwreck. I was married to man I truly hated with a passion, I was smoking almost 2 packs of cigarettes a day, I weighed about 420 pounds, and I was fighting Multiple Sclerosis. I was only 38 years old and I knew if I didn't make some drastic changes I wasn't going to live to be 50. So, first I quit smoking. A couple weeks later, I filed for divorce. I spent the summer and fall dealing with both of those messes but did so successfully. In November 2011 my divorce was final (YAY!!) and in December 2011 I went to the Lap Band seminar. I was banded January 2012. Now, I am happier than I ever have been in my adult life. I am thrilled to still be a nonsmoker and I've lost 143 pounds so far. I still have a ways to go but I know I'll get there. I still have Multiple Sclerosis (stupid incurable disease!) but the symptoms are a lot more manageable since getting the rest of my health in order. My goal is to continue to lose weight and make my body healthier as I do. My goal is also to never lose sight of the beauty of the journey because of tunnel vision on the goal. I want to enjoy this and savor every little victory along the way. I think my ultimate goal would be to be a healthy weight in ten years, still eating healthy, and still able to walk and function at least as well as I can now (MS can steal all that from me but I refuse to let it). We already support each other, both on the boards and in PM's

Picked up a new hobby after getting a new me...

Walking along with the usual weighing all my food and tracking. I used to walk with weights until I injured myself. Not worth it for me, an injury sets you back. And my Dr friend told me off about doing. It isn't really necessary. I maintained my muscle by eating 1 gram of protein for 1 pound of lean muscle mass, every day. I've lost 180 pounds and only 10 of that has been muscle. I still have 125 pounds of lean mass.

    daughters concerns

@@Bubba's Mom Hi! I think we as mothers spend so much of our lives catering to our children and families that we keep ourselves On the bottom of the totem pole which for some of us has contributed to our weight issues. I know as a mother you want your daughters approval, you love her but this is your time. This is about your health and your Quality of life. Sometimes you have to do what's best for YOU. I think we have pretty much all thought the same things "I can do this myself" "I just didn't work hard enough, this time I will" trust me I thought the same thing but I finally got sick of the roller coaster of constant ups and downs with my weight so I decided to get off that ride. I think anyone would tell you this surgery is not a fix all. You will still have to put the work in and eat right, exercise ect...but this tool will help you to lose the weight if you work with it and allow it to work for you. If you look at the big picture what are the chances you will succeed on your own without it? I'm defiantly not saying you couldn't but do you want to try all over again or Are you ready to make a change? Only you know what's right for you in your heart. There's nothing wrong with backing out and there's Nothing wrong with following through. It's a life changer and its your decision to make just make sure you are making the decision for YOU
  13. Told my daughter today about surgery next month. She is very unhappy, concerned, probably scared. She is the only family member that is against it. She does not live near me and so we are doing this over the phone. She adamantly believes that I can try one more time and that if I put the same work into one more try at weight loss that I am willing to put into the follow up after the surgery that I will succeed. It is hard to argue with that logic. I feel ready for this and I know she just found out and needs time to process it, but I really do not know how respond to her. I promised her I would consider her point of view. What do you all think...
  14. Congrats on 90 down! I’m years out. I had to dial in my weight loss calories and macros using my food app. If you are interested in how to dial it in, let me know. It will be specifically to where your body starts losing weight.

    Exercise help!

I was sleeved on Dec 2, 2013 and started exercising when they gave me the all clear. I walk 30 minutes on the treadmill at a good clip 5 days a week, some weight machines and this ab machine and I'm down 50lbs! Just walk .. 30 minutes. Does the trick!
  16. congrats on the progress. I have not had WLS yet, but from what I have seen in my reading is that people lose weight (100 lbs in a year or less) at 1# a week people would never reach that. After 3 months, how is your quality of life? Do you feel normal? I am nervous to do this because I am fearful that I may never be the same again. Obviously that is the point, but I am fearful I will do something that is irreversible with regret.
  17. I had surgery April 29th. Dr. Nussbaum from the Obesity Center of New Jersey performed the procedure. Couldn't ask for a better surgeon. 2 grand in labs came back perfect. Cholesterol dropped from a high of 300 to 105. I'm off 4 meds since surgery. I was approaching type 2 Diabetes, that's no longer the case. Even more important is that the depression and anxiety I have suffered with for years has subsided significantly, and I can actually sleep through the whole night. I do have an obsession with losing weight now. I question everything I put in my mouth. If I can't work out on a particular day, I worry about it until I can work out and feel great relief. Hopefully, I find some moderation with this lifestyle.

    Hopefully surgery in January 2012

Oh, OK, keep me posted on how you are doing. I am so ready to lose this weight once and for all, that I am actually excited about going for surgery!! Do you have to do a special pre-op diet?
  19. Ok I’m on my last month with dietician visits & last doctor visit. Bloodwork, psych done & Doctor letter of approval finished. The end is so close! I started this journey thinking only about the sleeve. Delays from Covid made this process longer and the more research I did, the more I came across sleeve conversion to bypass. I’ve had a change of heart and looking more into bypass because of the long term success rate. I’ve spent this entire year reaching for this goal and suddenly I’ve changed my mind on surgery type. Anybody else feel this way? Love any feedback right now. I’m 36 years old, can’t have anymore kids and I want the long term help to be successful at weight loss.

    Change in thyroid after banding?

I know several people who had to have their meds adjusted after losing weight. But no personal experience... sorry!
  21. I had a gastroplasty back in 2001. I have since regained all the weight, plus more, that I lost. It was a dismal failure but that was the only option back then. Is there anyone here that has had a previous surgery and then a sleeve? I guess I'm wondering if its even possible to have this surgery with the previous one in there.

    Drinking and Sleeve Postop

Rodney Tate, I too just had my sleeve on the 11th. I too could drink drink & drink on the liquid phase. I just started pureed yesterday and 1/4 cup is the limit for me. (physically and per Dr's orders). Down 28lbs in just 12 days! The weight is just melting off. Gotta stay on the plan/diet to keep it going. 120lbs to go!

    Oh Thunder ME ME ME

I always like it when you're in a thread and someone totally thread Jack's with a random question about themselves that has nothing to do with the topic. Here's an example: *Thread about goal weight* Person 1: " I'd like to get to 130" Person 2: "I haven't really set a goal weight" Thread jacker: "I'm 2 weeks out and really having trouble eating and drinking because it hurts when I swallow. Why does it still hurt?" Now, I understand they may feel they have everyone's undevided attention to address the question, but for God sakes START A NEW THREAD. Okay, rant over
  24. I too, was a diabetic before my surgery and took 1000 mg of Metformin as well. One week after my surgery, no need for medication any more! Losing weight will drastically lower your levels! Try your best to stay away from WHITE foods as they will raise your glucose levels. Go for walks, as walking will lower your levels! Eat a well balanced diet and you will be fine. I agree with Apple, you need to have some Protein. But, limit it to 3 oz of lean protein per meal. I can't believe your Dr. would tell you not to eat protein! WOW! Keep us posted on your journey! Kelly
