  1. SleeveToBypass2023

    Is this normal?

Yep, totally normal. I had the sleeve and it took me a week. And once I went, it was a whole production lol Took forever, painful, the whole thing. Constipation is a pretty normal thing with these surgeries, so you will have to make sure you get plenty of fluids, have enough fiber (I took a supplement and added soluble fiber to my protein shakes for the first 6-7 weeks, until I could be sure to get enough with my normal diet), and the first 4 weeks or so, I was taking Colace every 2-3 days as needed.
  2. I’m having my 2013 sleeve converted to bypass on 1/9/2023 because of GERD. I’m not too happy that I have to go through with this as I never wanted a full bypass and have enjoyed being able to still eat a some what normal diet (albeit with less volume than pre sleeve). I’m down between 60-70 lbs from my top weight pre sleeve. Not as much as I really need to feel good in my body but certainly healthier. a few questions: 1. anyone done this and can share their experience? 2. What was you weight loss when you went from sleeve to bypass? I’ve heard I can expect maybe 10-15%. 3. what is DS? I saw it on this forum but don’t know what it is. 4. any tips or things to watch out for? I’ll be glad to get rid of the GERD and hopefully avoid all the bad things that can come from that but I’m super worried I won’t be able to follow the bypass regime and have other health problems from not following things as directed.

    At least 3 Years Postop!

I am more than a dozen years out from my VSG. I started at 5'3" and 320 pounds. I had surgery in my mid 50's ! I am now 66 years old. I won't ever be thin. I have not had and will not have plastic surgery to remove the saggy baggy parts. My insurance and my general health are not going to work for that. But my doctor's consider me to be in great health, and are more than pleased where I am at right now. I did gain back weight over about 8 years. My lowest weight was about 165 - at two years post VSG. I gained 220 - some was health related, most of it was life.... and not self regulating. About three years ago I decided to lose 10 pounds in a year. But I realized losing weight was not the biggest problem, but learning how to maintain what I lost was the issue for me. So after losing 10 pounds I PURPOSELY stopped losing weight, and maintained the 10 pound loss for 3 months. I learned what I could eat, and how to eat to maintain my weight. Then I decided to lose some more. Three years later I am close to that lowest weight I had been ( and what I weighed when I was in my 20's ) I actually stopped losing weight and maintained at 173 to 175 for about a year. A few months ago I decided to try to lose a bit more. I have no "goal" right now, except that I just bought size 14 petite jeans - and haven't worn that size for 10 years and would like to try for that 165 and stay there. My PCP let me know two important things.... once you hit about 63 or so one should use "Smart BMI" as we age, we are graciously given a few extra pounds ... so my smart BMI is actually under the one here. and we also shrink in height. I keep simple protein as the focus of what I eat. I raise my own backyard hens that produce incredible eggs for breakfast - or I eat oatmeal and fruit. Lunches and Dinners are proteins and fresh veggies and fruit. I eat some carbs - maybe a low carb spinach wrap or thin slice bread. Snacks are healthful, and I insist on a treat every day. Sometimes just one small dove candy.... maybe a cookie or small serving of something sweet. For me, it is balance and yes, I weigh myself a few times a week - just to make sure I am on track.

Is this it? Is my body done?

Circling back to this question I asked in September. I did, in fact, lose that additional 20 lbs. I wanted to, and I got to a "healthy" BMI. 96% EWL. I'm putting this here so that others who wonder "is my body done" might see that a stall doesn't mean an end to weight loss!

    Is this normal?

yes -- that first one can take up to a week, and just a warning - it can sometimes be a doozy! You might want to take stool softeners just to prep for it. and as Arabesque said, chronic constipation is a common problem with WLS patients. A lot of us take Miralax, stool softeners, or magnesium tablets every day to keep on top of it.
  6. I got the same feedback from some other people too. I guess that, the fact that my labs are ok & the surgeon's preference are all factors. I just didn't know if I was sabotaging my surgery in some way. Congratulations on your progress so far! That's amazing in only 3 months.
  7. Had my surgery on June 21 and just had my six-month surgeversary. Everything has gone so smoothly. I didn't even realize it was 6 months until someone reminded me. Anyway - 6 months in and I'm down about 110 pounds (including the pre-surgery liquid diet). Here's a Before taken in April and an After taken a week ago (with the help of some shape wear, because extra skin is a real thing)...

    Is this normal?

Some people can take a week or so before they go number 2. I had sleeve but it took me 5 days before i went number 2 and it was painful lol. My doc prescribed medication to get me to poop.

Freaking Out A Little (Pre-Op Diet Worries)

I never was on a liquid diet. I was able to eat real food until 6:00pm the night before. After surgery, for dinner I had pureed stuff, I don't remember exactly what it was. Puree went for 6 weeks, then real food again. Different strokes for different surgeons, as usual. Good luck, Tek

    Unable to tolerate meat!?!?

Hi Paiytin, I see this post was 4 years ago, but thought I'd reach out as I'm 7 weeks out from surgery and get sick/nauseous all the time from food. I have a horrible time trying to digest meet, it will sit in my stomach for 24 hours making me sick. My surgeon is saying the same as yours did, you have to push through it and take the anti nausea pills. I was curious how long this lasted for you and if things corrected course? Any info you can provide would be great. I find this community to be so helpful. Was there anything that got you through this phase? I'm starting to become afraid of eating because I don't want to feel nauseous all the time. Also, happy holidays! Laura

    Minimal Weight Loss

I think we can't help comparing ourselves to others, we're only human. If you stick to your programme post op you will surely lose weight and the more closely you stick to it the better you should do. Best of luck! Edited to say I lost 17lbs in the first 6 weeks after my sleeve and I reached my goal weight about 10 months post surgery. Am still losing very lowly after 13 months.

    I cheated - now what?

I’m 8 days out. I had 3 ounces of puréed steamed cauliflower. Did I overdo it

    August surgery buddies!

Thanks! I felt better pretty soon after I started the antibiotics, so I'm not sick during Christmas which was what I feared. I'm now even further down on the scale, which is so strange for this time of year. Normally, December is the time of year I gain weight and not just during Christmas. So it's especially welcome now after a long stall in November. I hope everyone is having a great Christmas. We open our presents on Christmas eve, so we've already had Christmas dinner and opened out gifts. I got a whole box of homemade cookies from my niece, who is a college student and always gives something homemade. They're quite delicious, but definitely not healthy. What would you do with a gift like that? Eat one per day? Give them to friends? I already regifted the chocolate I got from work to a refugee woman I've been assisting, so I can't really give her the cookies as well.

    Head hunger is real....OMG

I am 9 weeks post op and measure everything. 1/3 cup meat and 1/8 cup veggie or potato. 1/2 cup yogurt. Since I just started regular food, I don't want to overeat. I take my 1/2 cup container to restaurants. Measure my food and put rest in to go container. I ask for rice and noodles on the side. I leave these or take home to my neighbor. I have a power aide jug that I refill and try to finish one before noon and 4pm and 9pm.

    Hunger

9 weeks post op bypass and eat every 2 hours. Some meals are processed quickly, scrambled eggs..., so I follow it an hour later with protein shake.

    Post-op day 3 and struggling

I found warm water, flavored with Skittles zero sugar helped. Sipping every few minutes for 10 minutes. Then again 5 minutes later starting again with zero sugar gatoraide, switching flavors. I set my cell phone timer. 3 weeks I thought I got it down so didn't use timer. Missed some with intake and got constipated. So use my fitbit to acknowledge time, as well as 30 minutes before after meals.
  17. Not everyone has to do the pre op diet. It varies greatly between doctor and amongst patients. I personally had a low carb type diet for a week and just the normal liquid thing the day before. The purpose of the diet is to shrink your liver so that it’s not in the way during surgery. If your doctor doesn’t require it then they don’t think you need it. Count your blessings. For many people the preop diet is the hardest part.
  18. I was told to add milk, nuts or cheese to increase calories as they all help with proteins too. There are many times when I am still not hungry, especially if I am travelling or busy. I always carry a protein bar in my bag for these days. If I am home then a protein yogurt has enough protein in to substitute for the skipped meal. A handful of nuts are easy to eat and are calorific My team would like me to up my calories to 1200 now so I mostly do it but twice this pre Christmas week, I have been so busy that I have failed both protein and calorie quotas. I feel my energy drop if I do this too.
  19. Good morning Sassy, I was just introduced to this website by my now bariatric Dr. I am 12 years out from a full gastric bypass, after having the lap-band originally. I switched to the full bypass five years after having the band because the band slipped and was shutting off my esophagus. For either of those surgeries, my bariatric doctor did not have me do anything different as far as dieting prior to surgery except liquids the day before as well. However, this was a very long time ago...2005 for the band and 2010 for the bypass in CT and the same surgeon. Fast forward to today, actually yesterday I saw my new bariatric doctor because I am going through the procedure for a revision surgery and she has informed me that I will be on full liquids for a week prior to the surgery. I am going in for revision due to complications with GERD and trouble swallowing. Although I have gained some of the weight back - 15lbs of the 132 originally lost, the goal is to alleviate my symptoms of discomfort. So in answer to your question, maybe it is a doctor preference about dieting. I wouldn't be overly concerned. However, being it that you have surgery on the 28th, enjoy the holiday and on the 26th keep it light as far as intake if you think that would ease your mind. Best of luck, Tammi J
  20. Hi Guys, I'm scheduled for Gastric Sleeve surgery on 12/28/22. I am reading all these threads where people are stating that they are on pre-op diets/liquid diets for 2 weeks or so. Neither my surgeon or nutritionist said anything about this. The only instruction I received was Clear Liquids only the day before surgery. They didn't even say it has to be sugar free. After reading through a whole heck of a lot of pre-op threads, I'm kind of freaking out & feeling like I'm doing something wrong or jeopardizing my surgery in some way. Am I wrong here? Should I postpone? Did anyone else not have to do a pre-op diet?

  22. Don't get discouraged! I felt that way too just prior to starting my pre-op. I was on the liquids for two weeks prior to surgery, I went through the thanksgiving holiday on liquids and I made it, you can too!! Just focus on your goal. I did a lot of praying to get me through that phase. I had my surgery on Nov 29th and so far things have been working out fine. I am now at the soft food stage and the liquids are but a memory. My focus now is making sure i am eating healthy foods with protein and getting my fluids in, you can do this!!!

    December surgery

Single digit countdown and now the post-op diet is in sight. I'm already starting to get a little bit depressed because the two week liquid diet pre-op is so hard for me. How are the rest of you getting through? Sent from my Pixel 5 using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. I follow my programs calorie guide very strictly & the excitement to eat food has made it easy to keep up with that. I'm now 3 months out, that excitement had faded a bit & for a week or so I was 100 cals under my goal (800cals) - now I'm 200cals under my goal. How do you make sure to eat when you're truly just -not- hungry?

    Post-op day 3 and struggling

Same here. Day 3 for me as well and the only that goes down without any pain is SF popsicles. Plain water hurts the worst. Can't wait until tomorrow, I can have SF jello pudding and yogurt.
