Hello, I had my surgery on 12/8/2020. I am 67 years old, 5"6. I was unable to walk due to a broken ankle and surgery to reconstruct it in May 2020. I also have thyroid disease and osteoarthritis in both knees. So having a gastric sleeve was my last resort. I began to gain weight at 40 and became diabetic at 45. My highest weight was 310lbs. My surgery was without complications. But I am not losing weight as I thought I would. There was no support from my surgeon after the sleeve. I was just on my own. So I decided to get counselling for my eating disorder and depression. This is a slow process. I am hoping for the best. I am thankful for this site as I know I am not alone. SW 289 GW 160 CW 257 I have been stuck here since March. I know I have eating habits that must change. But I love to snack on salty and crunchy . I do not eat sugar, rice, bread, or most carbs. Most days I only eat two meals. I begin with protein. I do drink a protein shake for breakfast. My diabetes is in remission. I am now walking without support. I go to physical Therapy for my knees and ankle twice a week and also have water therapy. That is my exercise. I just wish my weight loss would get going. Sounds like your weight loss is going fantastic. I would guess your "stall" is related to getting more fit. Getting more toned adds muscle weight in the short term but helps increase your metabolism. Keep up the good work!!! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
Jen2020MGB replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is an interesting thread. When I first had surgery, I didn't feel I deserved to have a healthy and slim body, I just wanted to feel a bit better. Now much of my excess weight has come off, I am so sad for the pre surgery me, who was so low and underconfident she couldn't even dream of being a healthy weight. Funny how things change. I have been feeling a bit fed up with my dietician saying it's not likely I'll hit my own personal goal (which would be a BMI in the region of 22-23). I hit 29 with little effort (beyond surgery, not eating much, and the challenges that come with a tiny stomach of course!) and am now enjoying exercising in a variety of ways. I am 9 months out, and while I appreciate weight loss will (and has) slow down, I didn't go through all of this to remain at an unhealthy weight! I may not get to my ultimate goal, but I'm certainly not going to give up before I've tried. We have gone through a lot to get to where we are now, and we deserve to succeed. So I say go for it - set your goal and work towards it. Set smaller goals on the way (the first 25, the next hundred bracket, lower than 5 years ago, that sort of thing) and celebrate each win. As you get closer to goal, you can always revise it if it doesn't feel right. -
I'm 7 months post op and my hair loss started 4 months after surgery, after loosing over 40 pounds. I'm fortunate it didn't come out in clumps, just got very thin. I had my hair cut/colored 3 weeks ago and my stylist showed me all the little fuzzy new hair growth that I can now see all over my head. My dietician told me many patients see hair loss for up to a year after surgery. Protein and vitamins are the key to slowing the loss and growing new hair (it's all protein). A temporary side effect of our journey to better health.

My goal outfit is/was . . .

I have loved this weight loss bonus! So much more room in my suitcase, I can pack waaayyy more clothes and shoes when I travel! -
I am pre-op but have been actively working on coping skills. Food will always be the preferred way so it takes a lot of intention for me to choose another coping strategy instead. Walking is the most effective for me but it can take some power of will to get myself out the door some days, especially if the weather isn't nice. Some "easier" back ups I have are: Listen/watch ASMR videos True crime podcasts while doing some tidying / laundry folding Some pampering (give myself a pedicure/manicure, hair mask, face mask, etc) If the stressor is something that I am really struggling with and want to vent, I journal on my private Tumblr page.

I'm losing my hair!!
catwoman7 replied to LonglivetheGranny's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
not much you can do about it - if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen... Just know that it's temporary - it should all grow back. hair loss can be a side effect of any major surgery (or of other things, too, like childbirth). It's due to trauma to the body. I think it's probably seen more often with bariatric surgeries than with other major surgeries because in addition to the surgery trauma, we're taking in very few calories those first few weeks/months after surgery. I lost hair from months 6-9. Fortunately, I didn't lose much - no one would have noticed. And it all grew back. about all you can do is keep on top of your protein and supplements so it doesn't get any worse than it would otherwise. -
I'm losing my hair!!

Great job on the weight loss! Try Viviscal Professional and PRP Injections. A bit pricey but worth it! And the hair loss is not permanent…it will stop and grow back! -
My surgery was on March 3rd. I am down 67 pounds, and feel great. However, I am losing my hair, and am devastated!! I read that it is not permanent. Any input???

What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
laurenantics replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Aloha, Not trying to hijack your question, but I also am struggling with this question. My pre-surgery meeting with my surgeon is 6/22 where I expect we'll discuss this, with surgery (DS) on 7/12. I'm heavier than most on this board with a CW of 411 at 5 foot 6 inches, aged 42 years. At first I thought, 200 is a weight that I can live with as I can travel, sit in single plane seats/bus seats and zipline and skydive and bungee jump and ride in rollercoasters, etc. etc. But as the weeks tick by, I don't want a weight that I can simply "live with". If I'm going to alter my body so significantly, I'd like to thrive! I'd like to get out of "obese" and "overweight" BMI's. The lightest I've weighed as an adult is 185 pounds and that was when I was 19 years old. Even though it sounds absolutely nutter, I'm gonna tell my surgeon I'd like to weigh 154 so I'm officially in a "normal" BMI. He may laugh or scoff, but hey, it's a goal. A 257 pound loss may be impossible, but I'm ready to shoot for the stars after imprisoning myself for so long. -
First Stall and Carb questions
HealthyLifeStyle replied to Jessicac2884's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello everyone has stalls at different times of their weight loss journey. It is completely normal. I have had several. Some have lasted a week, and others have lasted 3-4 weeks at a time. It is very discouraging but if you stay on track, you will keep losing. Your carbs and calories seem very high to me. I am 9 months out and my carbs don't go over 20, protein is 90-100, and calories is around 800 at the most per day. I know we are all different, and on different eating plans. I am not a doctor, but my advice would be to try to increase your protein, eat less carbs and calories and watch what happens. Good Luck -
Any April 2021 surgeries?!
Blueslily replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I read on this site and heard in some YouTube videos that sometimes that happens to some people because of a change in hormones during fat loss. I'm not an expert on it by any means. But I did hear about that in some videos and on this website. -

What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
STLoser replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Since I started out at 393, I've made my goal weight 200 or mess. I am currently 241. Ideally I'd like to be 150 or 160, which is the lowest I ever was as an adult. I am still in the overweight category even at that weight since I'm short. I can't believe I can ever get there again, so under 200 is my goal, which my surgeon says is very doable. My weight loss has slowed down quite a bit recently, so I do worry I won't get there, but I won't give up. Even this weight is such a huge difference from where I was before. I'd just prefer to get out of the obese category! Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Any April 2021 surgeries?!
WanderingHeart replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Not consistently. There are potentially lots of explanations depending on you. Certain foods can trigger moods. Or caffeine withdrawal. Medications can have that side effect, especially if your dosing should be changed with your weight loss. Also your hormones are probably wild with the fat burning. Maybe try journaling and see what comes up. Your body is wise and you may be able to identify the problem yourself! -
Hi everyone! So I definitely need some support in getting my water intake. I'm struggling getting water in big time. Its not like its that difficult for me to drink water, my problem is that I have such a busy work life as most of us do im sure. Most of the time im working strictly from home but I am also a mental health case manager, so I do outreach clients out to their homes and sometimes a session can be like an hour long and I would literally forget to drink water when im with my clients. Today for instance, i went to visit eight clients and I didn't drink water at all while I was out I'm concern about my water intake, im hardly getting any in. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions of something that works for you? I really need to get at lease 64oz in per day, to help with dehydration, for more energy and also to help with weight loss because I think my weight might be stalled because of me not drinking enough fluids.

I smell funny?
SoulGardener replied to Megabuck886's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do smell something... at first I thought it was the smell of the protein drinks but now I believe it must be the odor of weight loss - whether it is ketones or not - I don’t know. It smells somewhat like vitamins. -
What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
ms.sss replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
In the beginning, I set a goal of 120lbs because this would put me smack dab in the middle of a "normal" weight range for my height. By the time I got down to 127lbs, I decided that was enough as I felt I was looking too thin. Now fast forward 2 years after reaching modified goal of 127, and I now weigh 112 as of this morning. The funny thing is that I actually don't think I look as thin/gaunt now as i did at 127 lbs two years ago. Soooo...I think that weight loss and/or maintenance goals in terms of total actual weight fluctuates over time because the distribution and composition of those pounds may look different at different times. I think. These days so long as my clothes don't start feeling tight I'm good, lol. -
Was it Smart Pressed Juice Pineapple Chia? I've had that one because of the good prebiotics and fiber. I wouldn't say it's for weight loss necessarily, even though they might claim that.

What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
NovaLuna replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When I chose 180 pounds as my goal weight it sounded incredibly unrealistic to me, but that was the weight I knew I would be happy with so that's why I chose it. I was actually surprised when the surgeons office said it was a realistic goal weight and told me I should be able to get there. I'm 16 months post-op now and in a two week stall that has my weight bouncing around 186-189 so once my weight loss picks back up I'm still only less than 10 pounds from my own personal goal weight. In my own opinion, your goal weight should be where you think you'll be happy at. Where you'll be happy with your body and your weight. I chose my goal weight because that was the weight I saw myself happy at. I was 13 the last time I was in the 180's (I'm 33 now). I'm currently in the 'overweight' BMI at 29 with my goal only being 1 point lower at 28, but I'm no longer obese or morbidly obese or super morbidly obese like I used to be. I used to be 389 pounds and I've lost more than 200 of that which still blows my mind! I used to be a 32-34 in womens jeans (depending on brand and cut) and now I'm a 12. I used to be a 6xl (34-36) in womens tops and now I'm either a medium (8-10) or large (12-14) depending on the shirt. I'm far happier in my body now then I ever was. Yes, I still want to lose those extra few pounds to get to goal and it'd be amazing if I could even lose a couple pounds past that and get into the 170's, but I'm happy with my weight now for the first time in more than 20 years.
