  1. Hi everyone! I'm new to this community - I was banded almost 2 wks ago on 10/1/09. I'm 31 and my highest weight was 297 - I'm down to 279 as of 10/9/09. Who knew a liquid diet would be that successful?! I'm struggling right now NOT to eat - I am craving a salad. I don't even care if it has salad dressing! I started a blog (the good, bad and ugly - all of it), so feel free to stop by and offer up ideas, support, etc. It can be found here: Following my Dreams, One by One I can't wait until my first fill - I haven't been hungry until today but holy cow, it's awful! Thanks in advance for all your support. I'm just having one of those rough days. xo, Adrienne
  2. The sleeve won't fix the emotional eating but it will make it impossible to do for at least 2 years, I plan to learn new coping mechanisms before my honey moon is over. At least with 2/3 of the problem at bay, I will have a fighting chance to finally win this time. Not that I have not before but the cost was so high (under eating and over training is hard to maintain). I copied this reply from where you first posted. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! I would like to comment and let you know that it will not be impossible to emotional eat for the first 2 years. Emotional eating is what most overweight people deal with. This is something you will have to work on but I wanted to let you know that it will most likely be a struggle from the start. You may not have much hunger but emotionally you will probably still want to eat. Your sleeve will help you by not letting you eat the same amount as you used to eat. After a couple of months, emotional eating can take over and you can eat the wrong foods and hinder your weight loss. I could eat chips, ice cream, candy and many other foods all day long. I can fit a lot of them in my sleeve and they don't stay in there very long, this is something you will quickly learn. I have to make a choice every day about what I put in my mouth. As long as I stick to Protein first and make sure I get in my fruit and veggies and drink a lot of Water I am ok. I know that eating healthy makes me feel good and being thin makes me feel good and that's what keeps me on the right path. Is emotional eating still an issue? Yes, at times it is. But, with this wonderful tool, I have learned to deal with my emotions in other ways and usually I succeed in this. I am almost 2 years out so I can't comment on what will happen 3-6 years out. I can tell you that I have learned a lot and I plan to continue this because it is my new way of living and I love it! In light of this I am wondering what the best middle ground might be. I am discussing this with my doctor but would like to hear more about real people with actual life experience. Has anyone here had a large bougie 40 and up ? I have not so I cannot comment on this. I haven't heard of many people using a bougie that large but I am sure they are out there. I do have some acid reflux issues since surgery. As long as I take my PPI I don't have any problems. I try going off of it every week or two for a day or two but the reflux is still there so I will continue to take it. Best of luck to you

    Food journal important?

Are you happy with your weight loss? If you are, congratulations, if not, journalling is really helpful and doesn't need to be complicated and time consuming. Best wishes.
  4. I dont know of any body shaper that will permenantly change your shape. After you get to a normal weight you may look into cosmetic surgery but I am betting you find your shape to be just fine. I thought I would always have a butt..fat or thin...... But after losing 224 lbs it is flatter than I could have imagined. Just be patient and speak to a trainer about how to lose belly fat which may speed things along. Good luck

love all the different answers. i understand reasons people gain weight.....we all have had bad things happen and makes us depressed/miserable/turn to food/drink for comfort...i accept that....understand that.....heck i did that......that bag of doritos wasnt gonna hurt my feelings.......but what i know is that everyone who is (fat/obese) got that way the same way.....by eating more calories than they burned off. that is how i did it...i have lost a zillion pounds numerous times and always gained it back by me eating more then i burned off.....i am not putting down anyone and years of therapy helped me with issues.....i have no idea why i wrote this. thanks eye candy for putting this article on here. i read it yesterday.....to lose weight is easy,,,its the mind change that is a b i t ch

    Discouraged

I had surgery on July 25 and had my first fill on August 20th. It's been rough. Those first few weeks I was sore and tired, but hungry. I was 3/4 of a pound over what I was when I had surgery. My doctor gave me a hard time about it. This morning I weighed myself and I'm down 2 pounds below my lowest weight so I was happy. Not feeling restriction yet, but I'm more active. I'm riding bike again (haven't done that in probably 10 years!) and walking more. My clothes are getting looser so I know things are happening. Hang in there and good luck!
  8. Hi, i would be interested to know how you coped with the surgery, did it cause a flare up, and were you able to take your usual pain meds, i am on tramadol, gabapentin and paracetomol and if i dont take them i cant stand the pain, i have amytryptilene, and alupurinol for gout too, plus many more meds, i have several chronic diseases, am hoping less weight will help my joints and enable me to go swimming, the only exercise i can do, thanks, xx
  9. If I could lose a pound for every person who has said to me "How are you not skinny? You eat so healthy" , I'd actually be skinny!!! Yes I do eat healthy most of the time. I cook from scratch, don't use obscene amounts of fats, don't fry stuff, Don't eat white breads/pastas, Avoid any drinks with sugar, Don't eat fast foods..... blah blah blah blah blah.. But still I'm over 300 pounds. Now while my meals were quite healthy, I do have a weakness for some junk foods like Doritos and snack cakes but I resist MOST of the time. During my last push to lose weight I was logging my calories faithfully and sticking around 1600 calories and STARVING ALL THE TIME and doing over an hour at the gym four days a week and losing only ounces.. OUNCES a week. It was maddening.I even was being supervised by a nutritionist. I just gave up because I was still feeling like I was starving and not getting anywhere. Like you, I have no comorbidities. my lipid panel is awesome, my blood sugar is awesome.. Blood pressure is on the high side, but has been this way since child hood and has never increased and it's not considered actually high.. just borderline. I'm getting sleeved in March. I pray that it is the tool I need to manage my weight. I've been obese for 40 years. I NEVER remember a time in my life when I wasn't fat. I am pretty sure I'm going to be a "slow loser" but if I can lose more than mere ounces per week I will be happy! I have been on a a high protein 800 calorie a day diet since December 3rd. I'm down 20 pounds already which is shocking to me given my weight loss history, but have already stalled.. and even crept back up a few pounds without even cheating once. I am figuring maybe I'm retaining a bit of water and I'm NOT QUITTING. I'm staying on this pre-surgery diet until March. This stall has to break eventually and I want to lose 40 pounds by surgery date..... See? already the Sleeve is inspiring me to do better and I haven't even gotten it yet!!! I honestly believe we can do this. I have failed many times because I got frustrated in quit.. and because I was STARVING. I have been blessed with an efficient metabolic rate. Soon I will have a teeny appetite to match it.
  10. Hi Letty, welcome to the forum. It is great for support. I started a little higher weight than you and also tried losing it on my own for 10+ years and never could do it, not permanently anyway. So I did a ton of research and decided on the sleeve, then researched my surgeon. I was sleeved on 12/19, am down 10 lbs. already and am not hungry at all. It's nice to have control back. I would suggest having the surgery, if you've tried and failed time and time again...this is one thing that you can't fail at....at least not for a few years anyway. Good luck on your journey!
  11. So I'm just back from my psych eval & I'm so interested in knowing WHY they needed me to draw a clock & show the time 11:10 on it? Also had to draw a 3-D box & connect the numbers 1-2-3, etc, to the letters A-B-C. Really???? How is this going to help my weight loss or prove if I'm ready? I had to fill out a long questionnaire too which seemed to have the same questions over & over, just worded differently. I don't know, there must actually be a logical reason for this but I can't figure it out for the life of me. Also, the psych rattled off a bunch of letters & each time I heard the letter "A," I had to knock on the table. What your psych eval like this?

Confession Of A Mad Fat Woman

I appreciate you for sharing your food binging trigger being linked to sadness and feeling sorry for yourself. I certainly have experienced that as well...feeling unloved, doing too much for others expecting a thankyou, love, attention...not getting it and then binging as I dull the emotional pain. My bigger issue is stress related. I have to drive 2 hours to have my apts related to my lapband surgery 3/21/12. Every time I passed a hurdle apt., I would stop somewhere on the way home and buy a lb. of fudge or go out to eat by myself. I felt I needed to treat myself because I put myself out so much and risked so much in the pre op apt(gas money, difficult traffic, extensive medical history, psych interview, nutritionist interview, hospital preop etc). I am 80 lbs over ideal weight with many comorbidities because I use food for reasons other than hunger"my drug of choice". I have heard "insanity is doing the same thing over and over , expecting different results" We all need to learn new ways to deal with our emotions. I am considering this a rebirth, a new baby stomach and a new way of thinking. It is hard to change but we are all brave for trying to improve our lives and health. MelVan
  13. The first part (daily eating habits) is easy. Breakfast Poached egg on wholegrain toast or greek yogurt + muesli lunch Wrap or toasted sandwich or crackers with tuna/meat/cheese + salad veg dinner Meat/chicken or fish + veg + carb. Snacks include fruit(which I am trying to eat more of),yogurt, nut bar, slice of cold meat/cheese. The second part - why do I want to lose more is probably a lot harder to answer. One of the reasons I am sure is that having been on a diet for a huge part of my life it is hard to accept that I am fine and that I no longer need to diet. Also when we look in the mirror we tend to focus on our bad parts not the good ones. I see my stomach and that is what I would still like to lose.Unfotunately we cannot choose where we lose the weight. If I keep dieting my already skinny legs will just get skinnier and my stomach will probably remain proportionately large. The only solution is probably a tummy tuck and that is something I can't afford. I am probably the only person that notices my stomach because everyone else that I know always comments on how skinny I am.I don't think I am. So the mental adjustment required when reaching "goal" is actually quite big and its not something that a lot of us are able to do easily. I don't think I will ever stop obsessing about my weight - I still hop on the scales every morning!
  14. Not sure when you were banded, or how much restriction you have, but I assume it was recent and very little in your band..... Even after I had my first fill, which was 4 cc, I GAINED weight....what did I expect to happen? My band was not yet fully adjusted... When I saw my Dr., he laughed when I got on the scale... He referred to the Yellow-Green-Red chart o the wall and said THIS is our goal....to get you to that place....until then, it's all a struggle just as if I was not even banded.... And he was 100% correct.....he did get me to that place on the chart, and since then it has all been EASY ! No more struggles with old fashioned dieting or controlling hunger, just like they advertised.....
  15. Anyone tried the Barilla Plus Pasta? Multigrain (whole grains) and it's not as heavy and sticky as whole wheat... lots of Omega 3's and it's got like 10g of Protein in a serving. is a small serving of this OK? Nutritionist said only whole grains so I think this is acceptable. I'm still losing weight to get approved for surgery.
  16. Hi ya'll - I need your words of wisdom please... I was banded on October 1st and from then until November 17th, I lost a whopping 25 lbs! I got my first fill on that date (Nov 17th) and since then have lost NOTHING! Not even a half pound! I haven't gained either, which is great, but NO weight loss?! Seriously?! It's been 5 wks with no loss. Is this normal?! I'm feeling a little frustrated and have been so careful about what I eat - hardly any carbs (only oatmeal in the morning) and the rest is Protein and veggies. Any ideas? Is this the way it's going to be? I'm kind of panicking... I blog my journey too, if you want to follow along: Following my Dreams, One by One Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom. Good luck to you all!
  17. Aspiring Bikini Model. If I could just lose all of this weight, haha. Thanks for the response. I'm just worried about what it will look like. I wish there was a scars thread on here, so I could have some sense. There are not enough photos on Instagram. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Insurance Yes! Medical Policy No!

The latest and most definitely not the greatest!- I called Horizon BC/BS of NJ today to check the status of my referral/authorization. I had previously called and was assured that they had received my letter of Medical Necessity and was then given a case number. Silly me, I think having a case number will expedite things. Long story short, The first comment I hear after being on hold for about five minutes, is "Please don't be mad but"...Gotta love that. Apparently my letter didn't sprout legs and walk itself to the appropriate department--they will get that darn letter there pronto..... Crap like this, along with the extra weight keeps that blood pressure up!! I was assured (?!) that I should have an answer in 15 days, or by the end of the month. I hope she meant the end of this month.
  19. I know how you feel, I live in the Northeast and I originally planned this whole thing so that by spring I would have my surgery so by summer I will hopefully be losing all the weight and looking good in the better weather where you can show it off more. I had to start back in October, as my insurance requires 6 moths of the Nutrition classes and all those other doctors appts.... Meeting with the surgeon, group dietitian, one on one dietitian, the monthly nutrit. meetings, psychological meetings, PCP meetings... so many to get through before my insurance will even okay the surgery. I never thought about the weather factor when I started cause the last year or so here in the Northeast we had it easy hardly any snow at all..... NOT THIS YEAR THOUGH... It has been snow storm after snow storm this year... and although I do have to admit so far I have been lucky that it hasn't yet stopped me but I still have a few more appt. before surgery day to get through and I pray that snow does not get in the way. I have one more monthly meeting to go through and Please, Please powers that be don't screw that one up for me, cause if I miss that last one, I have to start all over again with the six months and that would be the end for me.... there is no way I could go through all this for another six months that would kill me.... so I will cross my fingers as tight as I can a pray all goes well for me and hope and pray for you as well that things work out for you cause I know how frustrating it can all be when you work so hard for something and then something beyond your control takes it all away and people .... like your insurance company just doesn't understand..... Good Luck.....

    Bad breath..

When your body is metabolizing fat for energy, there is a by-product called ketones. The state is called ketosis. Many people who follow a low-carb diet, where they deprive their body of carbohydrates and force the conversion of stored fat for energy, are very familiar with the breath issue that is present. Get some sugar-free mints and remind yourself "My body is converting fat for its energy use. This bad breath means I am losing weight." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketosis

    RNY and Erectile Dysfunction

@@hectorlopez323 Go on over to the Men's Room and you'll probably find the answer - or get more replies. I believe that weight loss can improve ED. The other issue is that often ED is a result of medications you are taking for blood pressure and those can often be stopped after you've lost weight. Here's the Link to the Men's Room forum... http://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/431-the-guys%E2%80%99-room/ Good Luck!
  22. I think the band is working for me cause if I eat to much it comes back up. sometimes if I just takea bite it comes back up. What is the word for the chest pain and food coming back up. Is that a true stuck feeling. When I'm on my period that happens all week. Does anyone else have that problem? This time I got smart and stuck to mushies like potato soup. Finally today I got to eat real food. Its so sad my four year old said mom be carefull you might puck agian. I guess I was doing that more than I thought. Today I had a egg and cheese stick for breakfast. I still am not seeing a one or two pound loss a week like some say we should. I am eating 1000-1200 calories a day plus using the treadmill 7 days week for three 30 minute sessions a. day.which burns 600 calories day. I feel the weight should be coming off. In about two weeks I can join a gym can't wait. What exercises seem to help some of you? What foods have you guys been eating.

    Miserable!

Hi allamess - I LOVE LOVE LOVE your username, that's awesome, I know how you feel! Well frankly it sounds like you're feeling bewildered and perhaps disappointed right now. You're not alone. Don't panic! You have a new band that isn't performing the way it was designed to........ because it's not supposed to keep you full at this stage. There's no Fluid in it to provide the restriction you need to have control and feel full. As others have wisely said, eating Protein helps some. Maybe helps a lot, or maybe just a little. You may not lose much weight right now...... if you don't you are not alone. Right now you're still healing from surgery, feeling sore, and of course you're hungry. When your blood sugar falls, you're really miserable. I'd say right now, the best thing to do is to watch and keep a record of your blood sugars (from your glucose meter) very closely. Try to avoid simple carbs, like you've always done. Diabetics are used to that. It's the same now. Keep up the protein. Keep your doctor posted on your progress. And be patient. The best thing for you now is to heal safely (diabetics heal slower as you know ) and to keep your blood sugar under control. Don't starve yourself! When your band finally gets "filled" the pieces of this puzzle will all fall into place. The portion control will come in time. THEN you will lose weight. Until then, HEAL, manage your diabetes as best as you can, and try hard to be patient. (I know it's hard, I'm struggling too.) Keep us posted on your journey!

    Current Weight July 18, 2016

I was at 42 BMI and was told if I Dont loose 10%of my overall weight as a sign of good faith and intent I would not be approved. My doc didn't care but insurance would not pay so I lost the weigh and more. I am 2 weeks post op. I can tell you I have lost multi pound a gained it back and then some in the past. This is more permanent if you are dedicated and that's what team wanted to see. I have just been losing these days lol
  25. You seem like you are an amazing person. Putting others before ourselves is a great thing...but sometimes we only end up neglecting ourselves. Maybe you need to reevaluate those in your life. I have read and heard many stories of people who have this weight loss surgery done that certain relationships change or become nonexistant. Stay positive and focus a little on yourself and celebrate the victories! You deserve that!
