OK guys and gals. My surgery date is 1 week from this coming Monday. I am going 2morrow to buy grocries for the family and have decided to go ahead and by some stuff for myself. Only thing is, I'm not sure what to buy. I have heard that I will be on clear liquids and this is fine by me. Can someone help me out on what I can get. Can I get like jello and cream of chicken soup or what. Chicken Broth comes to mind, I can tollerate it, but I don't exactly love it. If anyone dont mind, can they give me a few ideas of what to pick up. Also, what can I drink, apple juice, is this ok or what? Help me out here please.

Hi Puddin, First Congrats on your new band! As far as the Gas..everyone is different. Mine lasted for about 2 week but each day it got better and better. Walk Walk Walk, that is the best medicine you can give yourself for the gas..get up and get to walkin, it helps to move it around and get it out! The more you sit around the worse it gets..

Personally I tend to stall in weight loss if I stay that low, if I eat higher good calories I tend to drop steadily.

Welcome Ndipilato, glad you decided to join our group. I understand your worries about the bypass as I am currently doing my liquid diet to have the bypass in a week and a half, I am actually happy with my choice only because I know my body and my self, and I am ready for this. I also am a yoyo dieter, and too have been a heavy person since I was real young. I am ready for this change and this to be the end of obesity for me. I need this to be and that is why I am putting my full head into it. I hope that you get your decision from the insurance company soon and you are happy with the sleeve. The reason I decided on the bypass was because I had the band back in 2010 and it did not work for me, something happen with the band and made a year of hell for me, so I had it taken out in 2011 and was so discouraged that I didn't have a revision done which I should have and I know that now but because of everything I had gone through I didn't trust something else. So I joined weight watchers thinking that I could do that, and went to meetings and everything I lost maybe 10lbs in 5 months. I have a super bad thyroid that I take meds for and I just think that with that issue it hinders me in losing weight. I went to my doctor to ask about bypass and when he said that if I got the sleeve and that didn't work then I could always get the bypass after right then I was like no way, I am having the bypass I am not going to have a surgery knowing that there is one more that i can get and jeopardize my weight loss with that knowing there was something else I could do. I am all set, so that is why I made my choice!!! Well Welcome and good luck!!!

My doctors office called today and they moved my surgery date up to the 11th of July, from the 26th. I cannot believe it. I am excited but now the anxiety is setting in. I have been reading the posts and everyone is so helpful! I really want to NOT tell anyone at work, I am going to take the week off, I really hope this is enough time. One question I do have, I guess that I will call the Office, What kind of pain meds do they give you, how long did everyone need them? Did anyone do without them? Any feedback is welcome.

Congratulations on getting an earlier date. My daughter had surgery on the 15th of June and 1 week recovery is good. She took the pain med in the hospital and they sent us home with Vicoden, which she took a couple times a day for the first few days and then only at night for about 3 more days after that. Please keep in mind though, my child has never experienced pain before so I wasn't sure if the pain was severe or if she was just aching and sore. Also, if you prefer not to tell people what's going on, that's your business. I just told people I was taking time off to relax at home with my kids. Good luck.

Friend and Enemy!!! There are those weeks you will hate her dearly, but she is still a good idea to have! I had to put mine away as I found myself weighing WAY too often. This is pretty common. If you can only weigh once a week or even every two it's best. And don't forget to take measurements. On the days where you hate your scale, you'll be glad you have your measurements to compare!! And congrats!!! Only 16 days to go!! Woohoo!

Trouble Breathing
reinventingmyself replied to CuteChemist's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the sleeve recently and experienced this and had no issues prior. I was 199 lbs on surgery day so wasn't my weight causing it. I actually went to ER because I was struggling. Long story short it was my pain meds. I was taking liquid narcotics and I read the bottle. Sure enough on the bottle it stated may cause difficulty breathing. I threw it right out. Just dealt with a little discomfort. I didn't care. After about a week after stopping it my breathing got back to normal. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using the BariatricPal App -
Can't exersize, will they postpone my surgery?
FarmGirl7 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Last week I sprained my ankle REALLY BAD. I've been to the doc, but the swelling is massive. Tomorrow morning I have all my pre-op with the doc, hospital, dietician, and fitness person. AFTER all that, I see the orthopedic surgeon for my ankle. Has anyone had an injury that didn't allow them to walk, just before your surgery? I really hope they don't postpone me, but it looks like I'll be on crutches for another couple weeks. -
Due to circumstances beyond my control, the doc started me on Optifast this week. I pushed until this morning (after having a really nasty gallbladder attack last night) and am trying to hold it together. No, the ribs in the fridge aren't calling my name but it is getting interesting around here (especially with all the damn Halloween candy). And no, meditation, walking, keeping busy isn't really helping. I'm craving meat, something substantial and of course, can't. Surgery is November 26th now (doc pushed it two days due to my gallbladder getting yanked at the same time). 25 days....

Some have it worse than others, but personally my gas pain was pretty intense. What happens is when they "blow" your stomach up with carbon dioxide so they have room to work, they do deflate as much as possible but there is some that is left behind that your body has to work itself out. Most people complain of extreme pain in the left shoulder, and sometimes in different areas of their abdomen. Some only have it for a few days, others say it lasts off and on for a couple of weeks as was the case for me. Honestly, it does hurt, but it's not anything you should think about in terms of making the decision of whether to have the surgery. It will pass, and before long it will become a distant memory.

Wow, It is good to hear from you all about the different approved foods. My Dr. Says only clear liquids and Jello. broth etc. for this first week. Thankfully I am not hungry. I have not started a food journal, I think it will be helpful to see how many calories I am getting. My Dr. says he wants me to just focus on letting my stomach heal for the first couple of weeks. next week I can add yougurt and 1 cup of milk a day. I hope that we can stay strong until we are able to add food. I will be able to get my first fill at my 4 week check up. How about you guys, how are you all doing today?

I can't believe that all of you are able to have anything except nutrional supplments immediately post op. My band date is March 17th. For the first two weeks I am ONLY allowed three (3) eight (8) oz cartons of either low carb boost, glucerna etc. If I want I can substitute with three 11 oz. cans of low carb slim fast. I have to drink 64 oz of Water per day in addition to the Boost. I have to walk 2 miles a day starting the day after surgery...which I am actually looking forward to. After 2 weeks I can have pureed foods for 2 weeks. I am not allowed any coffee or caffeine during the first 4 weeks. No gum, no breath mints....all sounds good to me. The stricter it is the quicker I will lose.

Hi, I have been lurking around this board for a couple of months. I live in San Jose, Costa Rica, and have lived here for 12 years. I was banded on 3/29/07. The first night i stayed in the hospital and was in quite a bit of pain. Yesterday was better, and today its alot better, although i still have some pain, its like i did 1000 situps. I am on Clear liquids for 7 days, then am allowed to progress to the mushies. I plan on sticking to the diet that my doc has given me, I am scared to death of a slipage or an erosion, i know they happen, but if i have one i dont want it to be because i didnt follow the diet. I went through what alot of people describe on this board, the first morning waking up and having doubts if i had done the right thing. My wife is very supportive and said that i had, and if i hadnt it was too late to worry about it that it was done. I have 3 children, ages 6-11 and both my parents live down here in costa rica. The thing that made me finally get banded was that my mother is very large, and has been really sick the last year, with alot of different problems. She is 72, and when the doctor was explaing the latest set of problems he was basically telling us that it was really hard to treat all of these different things, and if she was at a lower weight she wouldnt of had the problems and for sure not the complications that she is having now. My Dad is the same age and he is very healthy, goes to the gym 5 times a week and has no health problems. He has never had a weight problem and i have been up and down over the last 10 years. Anyway, thats alot of rambling, dont know why i am posting all this, but i guess thats what these boards are for. I am looking forward to losing, getting back to the gym and changing my eating habits. Thanks For listening

Shakes make me gag but I force to drink it. Broth is tasteless and I wondering how I am going to do this for 2 weeks until I can have strained creamy soups. This is tough. -
Im doing my first 5k on July 18th. I was wondering what I should wear? Im thinking running capris because now, when I wear shorts to exercise they ride up! I already bought a shirt to wear from oldnavy, and it is breathable and it is fanatastic! Any suggestions? Also, what is a good sports bra? Im kinda nervous!! Im going to wait until a week before the race because im sure I will lose some weight in the next 3 weeks! I just needs some pointers on what to wear and what not! oh yea, im doing the race in Michigan so im hoping it is not as hot as it is here in Florida

Thinking about sleeve plication!
Cknorte replied to cabomo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi, I had plication on July 15th. I didn't have surgery with the intent on it being reversible or wanting it to be reversed. However both my surgeon and Dr. Watkins claim that it can be "undone" or "reversed". Yes there will probably be scar tissue and it isn't as easy as taking the hem out of a pair of pants. There is a sub forum on this site, that has loads of information. Dr. Watkins has been posting some great information on there, and those of us who have had this procedure have been posting our particular experience. Total Gastric Vertical Plication Sleeve Surgery - Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery (VSG) Forum I don't think it is any less invasive, it is laparascopic, 5 incisions, you are under general anesthesia, you go through a diet progression, from clears to liquids, to mushy, puree, soft then normal...just like with the sleeve. I think the main difference is that the sleeve is created by suturing your stomach vs, cutting out your stomach, there is some controversy on what the hunger hormone does with this surgery (in my case I don't get hungry...but varies from person to person). My surgeon uses a 32f bougie, I can eat about 1/2-3/4 of food (I think that is a little more than with traditional sleeve at my stage (6 weeks out). My diet is Protein first. I was able to tolerate foods at earlier times than with traditional sleeve, I had swelling, but didn't have a seamline, or stapleline, so my stomach was able to get back to my "new normal" fairly quickly, I ate chicken breast and steak at 4 weeks. It is a personal decision, and for me this was the way to go.....I would do it again and have done well for me. Take time and decide which procedure is best for you, no one knows their body better than you. Take care, and research, research, research....it is a decision for a lifetime....don't go into anything thinking it is reversible or can be undone.... -
:help:I have only been banded for about 3 1/2 weeks and I was wondering if anyone else had trouble at first with drinking water during meals or shortly after. I have always been a big water drinker and it is very hard for me. Is this normal????? I feel like I know nothing about this thing I have done to myself.

1. I had to buy new shirts for work already. I went to a consignment shop for cheaper ones as this will not be the last time. Amazingly, I am smaller around sooner after the sleeve than when I worked out and dieted before. My clothig didn't change for about 25-30 more pounds. 2. I fit into a McDonald's booth! Now before anyone judges me on being in a McD's, I ate a grilled chicken club with NO BUN and extra bacon (this is 50g of protein). I needed the protein intake and neither of us wanted to cook. I also spread about a teaspoon of habanero sauce instead of mayo. 3. I did a WHOLE Insanity cardio workout. Of course I modified some things because I am too big still to jump and do deep lunges (poor knees of mine) but I still did it!!! Now some unexpected hurdles from losing weight: 1. I can't eat away stress and frustration so I fight more. My bf calls me the big B at least once a day. I just cannot hold my anger in and It comes out. 2. I have realized how much I hate my job and the people I work with. I must have smothered my unhappiness in food for awhile because After 6 weeks off and not eatig that much I despise them. They do nt support my dietary needs nor do they care much about anything but themselves. I have begun the interview process to GET OUT!!! 3. I hate cooking now. I make something awesome and I barely get a 1/2 cup to a cup of food? So not worth my effort. It is easier to eat when y bf cooks.

Help, help, help - preop diet failure
SD Chick replied to Liz1531's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did Optifast for 2 weeks pre-op and the days 1-3 were the worst then I wasn't hungry anymore but I did lots of things with my shakes, the best one is take your Protein liquid - vanilla slim fast or whatever and pour it in a blender - add some sugar free Jello, to taste, add ice and blend - it is great. I expected to loose a great amount of weight but only lost 8# but I made it through and have sailed through the surgery and now have lost a total of 24# and will be 3 weeks on Monday. Hang in there - IT IS WORTH IT -
I am brand new to this forum. I have been researching the band for a few weeks now after my last doctor visit. I have to say, I am already so glad I found you all! I have been reading for hours, and all I can say is WOW, and THANK YOU! I have been feeling so hopeless in a time when I should be so full of joy...I am 24 years old and married the love of my life just over a year ago. Just before that, however, I found out that I had type 2 diabetes. What a blow that was, and is everyday. I have always struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember and I am so tired of it. I have dieted and exercised for years, and now that I am completely insulin dependant within one year, my doctor and I are trying a weight loss rx (pills). Nothing lost. It has been almost 4 months and I have not lost a single pound. I have NO self confidence at this point in my life and it is really putting stress on my new marriage. I know there is a long road ahead of me before I can really move forward with the band, but after reading what you have all posted, I finally feel like there is hope. I will be discussing the band as a possibility with my Endo on Monday and I am very excited. I am a little concerned about how people with diabetes do with the band. Is the diet the same? Any severe lows? I just have so many questions, and no one to ask...until now I am hoping...Thank you all so much for sharing and supporting. I would be curious to know if there are others with diabetes with the badnd who would be willing to share. Thank you all, so sorry for the long post, I promise I will be good from now on! Thanks!!

Help, help, help - preop diet failure
mceni replied to Liz1531's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm There with you, My doctor has put me on the after surgery plan, cream soup, cream of wheat and jello(no protein) diet 2 weeks before, I am in pre-op diet hell, of all the plans, all the diets in my life this is the absolute worst, I know that my liver needs to be reduced, but this is bad. I keep klinging to the fact that this is temporary, I have a calender and mark an x through each night that I make it and count the days till surgery(august 23rd). I know that after surgery your stomach will be smaller and it will not bother me like it is now. However for now, we live in diet hell! I also have kept in mind all of the post op horror stories and I know I want to give myself the best chance of quick and uncomplicated recovery. that is what is getting me through! -
I received a call from the dr. office this A.M. stating that they lady to schedule my surgery will call me before the end of the week to set a date. :biggrin2: I am really excited! I was just wondering how long most people stay out with the surgery? The people that I work with stayed out for two weeks. I have read many different things. If I'm not required to stay out for two weeks then I can this done a lot sooner then I thought. :biggrin2: I do now that before I have the surgery my doctor wants me to go have a screen put in my heart to prevent blood clots. I really hate needles!

Depressed over weight gain
Foxbins replied to barb1952's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do not worry--stick to your diet and in a few days you should see a big drop. I had about 3 lbs extra fluid in me from the IVs as well, and if you had a rough time your body is going to hold onto whatever it needs in order to heal. I bet by next week you are down at least 8 lbs. I have lost 15 lbs in 12 days and five of those days I didn't do anything. Stick with it! -
I too went through things pretty quickly. I didnt see my doctor until second week in Dec, went through EVERYTHING by the third week of Dec and had an original surgery date of Jan 4, 2007. The date was moved up to Jan 18, one week away!!! Pretty scary how quickly things can move when you are motivated, huh?! Anyway, I want to wish you good luck and keep everyone posted!
