  1. Stay off the scale for now. It will drive you nuts. You will hit stalls along your journey. I hit my first stall at 2 weeks post op. I didnt loose weight for about 2 weeks or so. you probably hit yours just a tad early which happens. Keep with the program and the weight will come off. I try to weigh myself every 2 weeks to 1 month. as for the pulse i am not sure there. I had high blood pressure before surgery and after surgery now i have low blood pressure. Where normally i would be in the 130-145 and now i am at 100 or so. (Blood pressure cuff) and my Beats per minute were in the 80-90's and now after surgery its low at around 50-60

First Week Post Op Nerves Are Shot

I was going to comment about not being able to absorb more than 25 - 35 grams of protein at one time, but catwoman beat me to it. I would say the best thing now is for you to rest a lot so you can heal. Try to ease your anxiety and just relax and allow your body to heal. Walk when you can, inside and/or outside, but also rest and just track your protein and water. The first two weeks, I drove to a lot of places and just walked. Like Costco, the mall, etc. I live in an extremely hot environment and sweating when I'm trying to get every drop of fluid in is counterproductive, imo. Then after two weeks I went back to the gym for cardio only, then at six weeks I was okayed for resistance training. I recovered alone. I did fine. Family would stop by or come help when I asked them to, but they didn't hover at all. I used a binder for about ten days to minimize discomfort when I got up, walked or slept. Learn the log roll technique to help get out of bed, so you don't need assistance. If your family is driving you crazy, send them home. You need a calm environment to recover in. Call them for help if you do need them but let them know when you want to be alone again. Just follow your teams recommendations and take your families advice with a grain of salt. Your team specializes in bariatrics for good reason. As you said, your family have never been obese, or had bariatric surgery, so what do they know? :x

    August surgery buddies!

Good morning from slightly overcast San Diego (man I'm going to miss this city as I leave my home of 25 years a week from tomorrow morning). My 1-month surgery-versary is in a few days. There was a week when I was gaining weight (yes, even following guidelines)--probably from water retention, but it's coming off again now, and I'm less puffy having discontinued one of my two BP meds at my doctor's request. I'm down 31 pounds since the liver-shrinking diet (2 weeks before surgery). NSVs: 1. Yesterday, I went to Target with my daughter. It was the first time in ages that my back wasn't killing me, and I didn't have to stop and rest my hand against walls to relieve the back pressure. 2. I can fit behind the wheel easier... even when my thin 17-year-old daughter forgets to put the steering wheel back up when she's done borrowing the car. 3. I've been able to stand for longer than 3 minutes without pain, which helps me do more packing (soooo much packing... the movers arrive this coming Friday).
  5. I got my gastric bypass on September 7th 2022, and I’m not really losing weight yet… Is this normal? You would think the weight would be coming off being that I’m only on a full liquid diet, and following it exactly how they advise. Also has anyone else had an issue with elevated pulse? I had tachycardia before my gastric bypass, but was still cleared for surgery, however at the office last week my pulse was 167 which is way higher than it typically is. Also on lovenox injections. Super dizzy whenever I get up to walk around, has anyone else had this issue? I do have an appointment with my cardiologist on the 26th.
  6. Ok, breath. You just had a pretty major surgery. You’re going through a lot of physical, psychological & emotional changes & it takes time to sort them all out & work out what you’re doing. So feeling a little anxious is quite common. Yes, you can add additional protein powder to your shakes. You can add it to soups & broths too. Walking is the best exercise to begin as it doesn’t strain or overly tax your healing & recovering body. Remember you should limit your lifting, pulling, & reaching fir a few weeks while healing. Plus it helps with avoiding clots & with getting rid of any lingering surgical gas. Some activity is good but listen to your body as to how much you can do. Start with around your house inside &/or out a few times a day. Yes, you can go outside. (Funny they think fresh air is bad but they wander around your house with cigarette smoke over their clothes, in their hair & on their skin.) You don’t have any open wounds. The wounds are quite small usually each less than inch long & they’re covered anyway. Yes, bruising, swelling, tenderness, etc. around the wound sites is common. If it persists or gets worse contact your surgeon. Some people do have more discomfort after surgery & have trouble getting up & down to begin. Think of all the abdominal muscles that got poked, prodded & stretched (the gas alone stretches your tummy out) during the surgery. Some say sleeping in a recliner or propped up in bed helps. Others say binders help support the abdominal region. Sugar free popsicles contain artificial sweeteners which continue to feed your desire for sweet plus some can cause side effects like bloating, diarrhoea, etc. Water, shakes, soups/broths, herbal or green teas, milk, yoghurt drinks, etc. all contribute to your fluid intake. Mix it up for variety. Does your family really need to be there? I live alone & looked after myself without any issues after my both my sleeve & gall removal surgeries. Maybe it’s time to say thank you but I can manage okay alone now but I’ll call if I need help with anything.
  7. Hey everyone! So, I got sleeved on 09/13/2022! I usually bounce back quickly from anything, however I am so nervous something will go wrong or that I am doing something wrong! So, if anyone could help me with some of these questions it would help ease my mind some what… On the left side, where they pull the stomach through is it normal to feel a little hard, very very sore and a little bulge? If so, how long does this tend to last? I have had this since the day of surgery. Was anyone else sore just getting out of the bed? Did it feel like you would pull something doing so?! Did anyone else resume Vyvanse days after surgery? It seems to me that most people returned to normalcy immediately and that is not exactly happening to me. If you use shakes like Atkins, Ensure Max, Premier Protein can you mix them with a whey protein powder to get you closer to recommended amount of protein per day? Are sugar free popsicles the easiest way to stay hydrated? How many are ok in a day? Can I do low impact indoor cycling at a slow pace? Did you start walking for at least 30 mins immediately upon discharge home? And how long did you let your family stay after? While they are a HUGE help and I truly appreciate that I have each one of them…They are driving me literally nuts with what I shouldn’t do. (I shouldn’t do anything except stay in my bed and go to the bathroom.) (My mom thinks I shouldn’t even go outside to walk🤦🏾‍♀️) because I could get sick from being open and having a major surgery. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Not one of them have ever been overweight or had any bariatric surgery! They all smoke which is their choice I did too previously, but I don’t allow it my apartment, so they are in and out every 10-15 mins, especially on the nights they drink wine 😡… My sister is also here with her out of control, talking back to her seven year old😤. Any pointers or helpful thoughts are welcomed!!! SW219 CW206.7 GS09.13.22
  8. Yes! I can’t use any of the things I was depending on. No G2Z with protein, no protein shakes, no popsicles, no sf jello, no sf pudding, no yogurt….nothing sweet. It makes me so very nauseas. Blech. Sweet tooth is gone! During my week of full liquids, I pretty much lived on Progresso’s Creamy Chicken Soup broth and Manhattan clam chowder broth. They were all that tasted good to me.

    September surgery buddies!!

You are not alone. I’ve had to wash all the bed linens twice and had one unfortunate incident at a coffee shop with my hubs that ended with most of my clothing in a spare trash bag from the stall I was in…😳. So very humbling 🤦‍♀️😂
  10. Hi Kam. I am 6 weeks post-op. What are your questions?
  11. Once you get going on drinking plenty of fluids and taking your vitamins, it’s really not bad at all! I know it seems that way when you read everything I wrote but (seriously!) you’ll be fine! I was just trying to think of a the tips I’ve learned along the way. I had my VSG 18 months ago and my GB 2 weeks ago. I’ve read so much and received so much information from veteran patients I just wanted to share what I knew. I know you’ll do well. People on this site are very helpful. All you have to do is ask if you have questions about things. 😁

    For the ladies

I had the worst period of my life after surgery. Mine are always a little iffy as to timing, but I really wasn't due for another week and a half. Normally I have very light periods and mild cramps. I had horrible cramping and clotting, super heavy flow and it lasted for TEN days. I am so over it and hope next month will be back to normal.

I'm glad everything went well!! My period showed up a few days before surgery too, luckily it had lightened up for the day of. I kinda wish I had a cath, I was up every 2 hours needing to pee. About the hunger! Same! It's the excess stomach acid, at least for me. It's not just noise, right? Like it's actually a little painful? I could literally be watching my family eat and totally not be interested with no stomach reaction, then later take a sip of a protein shake or just water and then it's painful gurgling feed me now time, like I woke up a beast. It was the worst the first week and now it's tapered off, I assume because my body is adapting to how much acid my stomach needs. This video also helped ease my mind! https://youtu.be/m5NCKvkr7rU

    September surgery buddies!!

Hey Sptember pals, Had my VSG on 9/15. Stayed in hospital overnight. First day after surgery I slept most of the day while anesthesia wore off. Had a catheter, so didn't have to worry about going to the bathroom. Fun surprise though, my period started two weeks early. Doc said it happens a lot to women that have been on liquid diet. I was really light and actually forgot until I got up about 8hr after surgery. No biggie, they had put a pad on me post surgery. Anyhow, had no problems walking. Pain wasn't bad, but I had pain meds. IV pain meds until about midnight when they switched to oxycodone to see how I'd react to it going home. Also had a nausea patch. No nausea and pain wasn't too bad. Worst part was getting in and out of bed. Or rolling over in bed. That remains now that I'm home. Came home yesterday around noon. Stayed on top of the pain meds every 4 hours and still walked around the house a bit. Today, feeling better. May fully switch to Tylenol by this evening.

    SURGERY IN OCTOBER

I did do a “last supper” because I was so worried I wouldn’t be able to eat the foods I love ever again. It was all sorta silly now looking back because I can eat anything I want. I don’t have anything I cannot tolerate in moderation. Basically it was just that much more I had to lose post op. I didn’t go crazy though thankfully so it wasn’t like it was that big of a deal. Just remember the more carbs and stuff you have the more you crave them. So if you have that junk the last couple nights before your pre op diet it will be that much harder to stick to the pre op. I had my last supper a week before so that I could detox from the carbs and stuff BEFORE I had to start the pre op diet. Something to consider.

    3 weeks Post Gastric Sleeve

I am 3 weeks post surgery today and officially on the pureed foods. I find moving onto pureed foods extremely difficult and eating this consistency makes me feel sick. I am also convincing myself that I can have solids and when I do I just throw up. I’m not sure what to do or eat and I just really needs some motivation😖

food restrictions are temporary. After awhile, you'll be able to enjoy the foods you do now, just in smaller quantities (and for some food items, just as an occasional treat). I didn't really have "food funerals" beforehand, but I did go out to eat a couple of times the week before my pre-op diet to have a couple of things that I knew I wouldn't be able to have again for a few months. I didn't overdo it, though.
  20. I find that I can participate in the major holidays with a small portion if I am reasonable. By that I mean don’t celebrate ALL day, just the one plate at the dinner or event and no leftovers later. And I mean truly only the major holidays as in I only celebrate my own birthday with food not everyone else’s and not every graduation or baby shower, wedding, etc. i basically try to keep it to once a month or less that I eat off plan whether that’s a holiday or not because it’s too easy to find an excuse if you partake in everyone’s celebrations you could be doing it every week and that can get you in trouble. One job I had did what was called a “life celebration” once a month on the first workday of the month and that was to celebrate everything happening that month whether it was someone’s retirement, bday, or an actual holiday like thanksgiving, etc. everyone brought in food and treats that one day and some were holiday themed and others bday theme or whatever applied and most people would choose a plate of food and one treat and be done with it. That would’ve worked out well for us post surgery. as for excuses for the events I don’t want to partake in, I usually either say i just ate, my stomach hasn’t been really feeling that great today or I am not a big fan of seafood or carrot cake or whatever it is. If it’s at work and they will see you eating your own food you could go with I’m dieting or I’ve had some medical issues and I’ve been working with a nutritionist and I can’t have it. I find that people like to hear that it looks delicious and you’d love to have it but your not allowed. And if they press just say no I’ve been bad too much lately or something like that. I love the idea of I’d love to take some home to have later if you don’t mind. You can offer it to someone at home who doesn’t struggle with weight or just toss it. Most people just want to think their hard work is being enjoyed and most likely don’t care when.

My pre op liver shrink diet was 3 weeks. I had lots of food funerals before that started and I am so glad I did. I didnt need to loose any weight to get my surgery as some do.

You just have to get through it - make sure you finish all the preop stuff in time so you don't get delayed. You will likely have to do a pre-surgery liver shrinking diet which, depending on your doctor, might be all liquids or otherwise very restrictive, which will suck. Some do 1 week, some do 2 weeks (I had to do 2 weeks which was not fun). I think I saw one poster say once they only had to do 3 days. Whatever it is, just keep thinking towards post-surgery and how much your life will change. Good luck!
  23. I had the sleeve done on 9/8/2022. So i am just a little over a week out. I am starting to feel better, but I am STARVING. I am just drinking the protein stuff I am suppose to , water, and the protein soup. I have another week before I can be on soft foods. Also wondering if I can have a marijuana edible. I do not smoke, but would like to have a relaxing edible. Am I suppose to be hungry after this surgery? I though it was to shrink your stomach and appetite?

    October 2022 surgery support

i transitioned to my pre op diet in august. Mine is 50 carbs a day (total, not net). I knew with my eating disorder issues I needed to slide slower in it so I would not backlash into binging so I transitioned down over a couple weeks. Been about three weeks at 50 carbs a day (ok, had about two days that i did less than 75) and it’s going well. I can eat a wide variety of things to keep it interesting. Early on i was ravenously hungry despite eating plenty but my brother (who has done keto before) told me to up my fat content and the hunger disappeared. I totally miss some foods, but not a lot. Beans used to be a big part of my diet and they are too carb filled for now. Rice, pasta/noodles and tortillas were also staples and are now not good choices. And most fruit is very carb filled, but occasionally I will carb budget for a lovely apple which tastes so sweet now. I had already cut out most bread so that wasn’t a big deal. following the diet I have lost 18.6 lbs in three weeks (69.6 in 2022 total) … so worth the shift in eating!
