    Drinking while eating

Drinking with meals is one of many general things you will have to learn for yourself....like crushing pills, some can some can't...or carbonated drinks... The band is adjustable and each individual responds differently.... early on, I was told to start to get used to not drinking with meals....to drink right up to a meal, then nothing during or 30-40 minutes after....I asked why, and like many "Rules" was basically told I will find out as I get closer to the Green Zone...that these "rules" will make sense sooner or later..... Sure enough, I did find out why....bottom line, it is not a question whether I am told I could or could not, it is that the way my band has been adjusted for the last 3+ years, I CANNOT drink while eating....it is IMPOSSIBLE without dire circumstances.... food is in my pouch, slowly passing through the band...there is just so much my pouch will/can hold.....IF I introduce Water, it will instantly increase the volume of what is there....it will have no where to go but right back up and out! Not to mention the pain....I would assume dilating-stretching my pouch.... As far as drinking after eating, I have to wait, and take small sips from time to time...until I can tell when it is safe to drink again....I have had food come back up 20 minutes after eating because I drank too soon.... Having said that...I do not have to crush my meds/pills, and I can drink carbonated beverages (carefully)...others cannot....so you see everyone has different tolerances to different things, and it will only be after time (mnths/years?) that you learn a lifestyle that best suits you and your weight loss..... But in the beginning, your best option is follow your Dr.'s guidelines, until you have those "A-Ha" moments...even then I tell my Dr. what I discovered....
  2. So tomorrow I meet the surgeon the gastrologist referred me to. They were when I made the appointment on what to expect. They were confusing on what is really going to happen tomorrow they received my endoscopy results so I guess we will meet, talk an then file paperwork to the insurance company and then play the waiting game. At least I am taking baby steps right? I hope my insurance will cover this. I don't think I can do another diet alone but I feel miserable at this weight.
  3. Betsy- I'm right there with you. I consider myself a food addict (along with some other addictions). Eating high fat/high refined carb foods is just not an option for me. It's the first time I've lost weight without thinking- can't wait to be off this diet so I can eat xyz. For maintaince I have added some healthy carbs and fats but much of the food is the same. I am happy to say I have maintained for about 6 weeks now.
  4. I had surgery 10-17-13. Still haven't reached my weight loss goal. I got down to 192. That's it. I've gained 40lbs back and am now at 226. I can not get my behavior right. Drinking Water is like torture. I'm most likely dehydrated and exhausted.

Pain in left chest area - just left of center

The gas can be surpisingly painful . If I didn't know better I would have sworn I was having a heart attack. I was banded May 18 th and got my first fill June 16th . It feels too tight to me. I have had some pretty tuff gas pains the past week. I am almost scared to eat . I have lost 32 lbs. (counting the pre-band diet). I haven't eat any bread or other problem foods I was warned about . I am keeping Gas-X in business too ! lol. I am happy with the weight loss and very concerned about the gas pains. I have done a few searches and we are not alone with the weird gas pains. However, that doesn't make me feel any better . This is band is controlling me for sure. I tolf my doc....." This thing will talk back to you and LOUDLY ! :blushing: if abused. I hope we toughen up and learn to live with it . Right now .......I am not too happy . Reading everyones advice has been very hepful too. I am not much on posting messages but I check here everyday. I am hurting now with gas pains and ........Well , Like Bill Clinton said: " I feel your pain !" I have not had any acid reflux or even came close to throwing up either. I have been on a very bland diet too. I will experiment with what I can and can't eat and just see how it goes. Good luck and keep the Gas-X handy.
  6. I just don't have the resolve to stay ON THE WAGON 24/7. I have had a rough time since my last "un fill" and since then I have been on meds and a steroid. I have gained 3 lbs and am ticked off at myself. I go through this every once in a while and then pick myself up and get it together. I need a fill for sure, but need to get my head back in the game.
  7. I had my Gastic Band removed last Tuesday and all went fine. They did a special X-ray the next day while i swallowed an aniseed tasting drink. The Doctor said it all looked good. I am chomping at the bit to have my sleeve done but have to wait 12 weeks (24th March) so my stomach is fully healed. I see in the U.S. they often do both procedures together. I do understand taking the precaution of waiting but I have a very good reason for wanting it earlier than 12 weeks. I am a Bing Eater/Bulumic and already I can eat huge volumes of food. The other thing is after I reached my goal weight of 60kg after the Gastric Band I had all the surgery to tighten up my loose skin and frankly looked fabulous. If I keep up this eating I will stretch the skin out again and all those operations will be ruined. I will be talking to my Sugeon as soon as possible to discuss. HAS ANYONE ON THIS FORUM HAD THEIR SLEEVE CONVERSION DONE EARLIER THAN THE 12.WEEKS???
  8. I am allowed to try solid foods as of today. I am still a bit nauseous and belching a lot and my since of smell is crazy. But for the most part I feel pretty great. However, I am starting to get hungry. I would like the choices I make to really count. Flavor that is. So, does anyone have any ideas they would like to share? Breakfast? lunch? dinner? I really wish there was a book out there for us like Weight Watchers has. Meal ideas for each stage.
  9. I have been eating lots of greek yogurt. Yoplait makes a good one with 14 grams of Protein. I also baked some tilipa last night. Any white fish doesn't need pureed and I added some lemon pepper seasoning. I am planning on having refried Beans this week and cottage cheese and of course mashed potatoes. I have been trying to load up on protein and need to pull out my eating well after weight lost surgery cookbook. I didn't look at it through the clear/full liquid stages.
  10. lol I went to youtube and typed in (what does 5lb of fat look like) and it is shocking .....great motivation though 80 lb is GREAT actually AMAZING! I just can imagine someone not noticing 80lb thats the weight of a child ..WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THESE PEOPLE? Great job PUGS! laddie, I love it to when my wrist feel smaller (I’m probably just dehydrated) but it makes me feel so petite. and for a son to give a compliment that is an accomplishment all of its own!
  11. Hello, My name is LaShonda and I am a 24 year old single mother who weighs 388 lbs. I have been researching the LAP-BAND®® for about 14 months now...and recently have gone through some steps in getting it over the last couple of months. I started my journey with the idea that this might be an easy road for me, but I have come to realize that it is not. However I have prayed about it and have come to the conclusion that this is what I want to do. I started in at 403 lbs the heaviest I have ever been, since then I have tried numerous diet pills and diets. But with my High blood pressure there is not a lot of things I can take. Good news is I have lost 15 lbs and plan to lose more, also I have attend a seminar and my psych evaluation is in July. After I see Dr. Williams I can then have my insurance approved and make a consult visit with Hurley bariatic clinic. Seminar date: 6/9/2010 Psych visit: 7/14/2010 Start Weight:403 lbs Goal weight: 185 lbs current weight: 388 lbs This was the first post I ever posted in this was back in july. I am so proud to say that I can now post Seminar date: 6/9/2010 Psych Visit:7-14-10 Consultation:9-13-10 Insurance Approval: 6-1-10 Nutrition visit: 10/4/10 Pre Admissions: 10/27/10 Surgery:11/11/2010 I am so very happy that I have made it this far and can not wait until I become banded so I can make this extra change in my life progess. This has been a long road but this is only the beginning.

    Freaking Out

I think it is interesting. I never use to think about food until I started learning about the band and I realized how much my life revolves around food. I am still per-op and working through all the insurance fun stuff. The more I read the more I realized I was on my Yelp app everyday looking for a new food place and weekends were based around new breakfast places and such. I have really started to rein that back in. Regardless of the surgery I can see that isn't healthy. I am a type 2 diabetic and my blood sugars are well controlled but I take a lot of insulin and as a result I have gained a lot of weight. I am looking forward to the band as a tool to further help me gain control over my life and health. I love new foods and I still plan on being adventurous, just in smaller portions.

    What am I doing wrong??

I have Tricare and overall I didnt feel that the process was that hard. The big thing for me was that they wanted proof of history that I had high blood pressure that required medicine because I was not heavy enough to qualify based on weight alone. Best of luck to you.
  15. Since you are only 2 weeks post op, don't worry so much about actual weight loss at this point. Your body is trying to heal from surgery and it's normal to gain some weight during this period. Make sure you are getting enough protein so you can heal and make sure to hydrate with plenty of water or calorie-free, caffeine free liquids. The weight loss will come!
  16. Please don't panic you are going to be ok, i felt a lot of the same feelings you felt..I had that same thought in my head "how could I have done this to myself" I was not happy the first week..not happy at all, i had this horrible pain in my shoulder that lasted for 2 weeks I thought I was going to have to live with it for the rest of my life but it went away. I did not have the symptoms you wrote on number 1. but I bet it is normal because of the hernia they fixed. Give it time you will get better. just stay calm, take your pain medication..sleep as much as possible. you will be able to eat again I promise you!! You will be able to eat, it's still work to lose weight even with the band, but it is a tool and if you use your tool you will have success. i know i told you to sleep but walking might relieve some of the gas you are experiencing. What you are feeling is normal you're going to get better in no time at all that discomfort, pain, fear will all be a distant memory...write it down so you can looks back and maybe help others on this site later who may experience the same symptoms you have now.

    Good Books on Lap Band

I highly recommend Fighting Weight by Khaliah Ali (Mohammed Ali's daughter). She had lap band surgery several years ago. The book goes into all the practical nuts and bolts pre and post op information as well as her own personal journey with weight issues.

    Good Books on Lap Band

I found a book called recipes for Life After Weight Loss Surgery by Margaret Furtado and Lynette Schultz. One thing that I liked was the mashed califlower. I actually did a vlog about it on youtube. the book also has a lot of other good recipes and it tells you how many weeks post op you should be before trying each recipe. You can find the book on Amazon.
  19. Hi all, I wanted to introduce myself to the community. My name is Jez. I'm a 32 year old female from the NY/NJ area. I had my first appointment last July, but since I'm prone to impulsive decision making, I took a year to decide on surgery and finally agree to move forward with the Lap Band surgery. I went back to my surgeon's office yesterday and my surgery is now scheduled for July 14th. I'm 5'6 and 226 lbs. 40 of which were added in the last year and a half as a result of anti depressants...which were prescribed to me because of my issues with weight!! Totally counter productive. I spent all of my teen years and college in good shape. Then I started to slowly gain weight and was finally diagnosed with PCOS. I have a total of about 80 or 85 to lose. I'm both incredibly excited and incredibly scared. I'm looking forward to posting here and reading all of your success stories and advice
  20. Jonni, I beat you by a few years - I was 67 when I had sleeve surgery last July. I was fortunate in that I had no pain or nausea, and had no trouble tolerating foods at the different stages. I retired in 2018, and didn’t want to spend my retirement years struggling with weight, yo-yo-ing etc. I was self pay, because my BMI was too low for insurance, but there are no regrets so far! Good luck on the 14th.
  21. So I'm happy with my weight loss but my hair is falling out all over the floor! Went to GNC today and they have the 5,000 Biotin capsules. Can I break them apart? Has anyone else done that? I know it won't help my hair loss but I'm hoping it will promote new growth. Thanks for any advice/replies.

Still on the fence about surgery.

Hey Mel, Totally understand where you are coming from because I'm in the same boat as you. I go Tuesday for my first pre-op nutritionist appointment. I have do this for 3 months before I can schedule the surgery date. I am 25 and been struggling with my weight my entire life. My thinking is that I go ahead and start the wheels now and do everything possible to get this surgery scheduled, etc. If something miraculous happens in the next few months and I don't want surgery, so be it. But if I can't change in 3-4 months then its time to do something. I have been off a lifestyle/diet plan for couple years now, tried to get back into the motions but feel like I have too much to loose (over 200 pounds). Does your insurance require you see a psychologist before surgery? Maybe scheduling an appointment with a therapist would help you straighten things out better.

Still on the fence about surgery.

Hi MelMel, You say you're afraid of the surgery. Do you mean the actual procedure? Have you tried diets before? How successful were they? There are risks involved with everything we do, but I've found that, with the band I've lowered mine. I've been taken off one of my blood pressure meds. There are so many things that I couldn't do before that I can now. I think it's natural for you to be afraid; I was, as I'm sure many others were. I've found a tool that has helped me lose weight, and though I still have a long way to go, this is weight I know I couldn't have lost on my own. Only you can make that final choice, but for me, it has been worth all the fear I had. Keep in touch. Let us know what you decide, and the best of luck! Debbie.

    really confused !!!

I was told to buy a food scale and measure all my food. Once I start eating solids. I use a measuring cup for my liquids, and a 1/4 cup for my semi solids like cottage cheese and pudding. I buy the pre-made puddings and Jello so I know what I am eating. I have had no fill yet, but feel pretty full after a half cup of anything. Or a cup of cream Soup sipped slowly. I don't have the mushier food like eggs till next week when I start my 5th week since the surgery. I am losing maybe 2-3 lbs. a week. I can start riding my bike this coming week. And doing more exercises . That should speed up the weight loss. But I am happy with 2 lbs. a week now. I get my first fill the middle of September. I am hoping to hit a sweet spot by my second or third fill.

    really confused !!!

I weigh my cooked meat on the scale, 2-4 oz by weight, I use a measuring cup for veggies (1/2 cup) and starches (1/4 cup). So I might have 2-4 oz fish with 1/2 a cup of peas and 1/4 cup of mashed potatoes for dinner. Here is a link to my blog of what I usually eat: What I eat... - LAP-BAND
