  1. If you have severe acid reflux (GERD), gastric bypass is better than sleeve because sleeve will only make the condition worse. Too many people who had lap band surgery had to have a revision due to problems. The band will sometimes erode into the stomach wall over time and this can become a life threatening condition. As a result many doctors have discontinues performing this type of surgery.
  2. Hello all, I had lap band surgery almost exactly 6 years ago. Initially weight loss was decent but I've had issues with the band since day one. I pb or vomit almost every meal. I have no fluid in the band and regained all the weight I originally lost. I started the revision process late April. I got approved by BCBS for gastric bypass last Friday. Surgery date Aug 28th. Pre op diet starting today. Wish me luck. I'm excited. Anyone else having a revision around the same time? Michelle Pre-op revision band to bypass Starting weight 275 Healthy BMI 154. Surgery date Aug 28th
  3. August 23 RNY revision from sleeve.
  4. I'm revised from sleeve to bypass on August 23 due to GERD, fatty liver disease, weight regain, didn't lose enough with the sleeve. Excited and nervous all in one.
  5. I had a Vertical Banded Gastroplasty in 1994. I have had problems over the years that have been increasing as the time goes by such as Acid reflux, vomiting, severe abdominal pain followed by massive diarrhea and lately, constant pain in my stomach area behind the rib cage. I can't eat anything solid now and keep it down so I am on protein shakes and yogurt to get my nutrition. have an appointment with my primary care physician on Wednesday for this reason and am wondering if she will order an endoscopy or should I suggest it. I am worried about the possible damage that the surgery may have caused but I need to know. hate the thought of being on a liquid diet for the rest of my life. Has anyone else had the VBG and needed a revision? What were your symptoms? Am I just being paranoid?
  6. HI everyone. I had my Lapband to mini gastric bypass revision on July 5th. So far I am feeling fine with my weight loss of 23 pounds so far, considering it is a revision. And my age of 61 both me and my nutritionist and doc think it is pretty good. My problem is that I am throwing up a lot. Almost after every meal, specially if it has meat in it. I really try to chew slowly and a lot, stop after 3-4 spoons and choose my food very carefully, and still it happens. On rare occasions it stays in. I am worried! Also having great difficulty drinking all the liquids recommended... What does go down really well is natural coconut water, which I drink a lot of. As food. One egg goes down well, whole wheat crispies also ( I am allowed 2-3 a day of the real light crispies, usually have one at breakfast ) and I usually eat them with cottage or egg or my homemade tunfish spread. All of the above goes down well and also stay. However, chicken, hamburger meat, or chicken liver, ground meat, that goes down with difficulty and comes out in no time at all. I am worried!! Anyone with the same.e problem? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Sent from my D6603 using BariatricPal mobile app

How much time in the hospital?

Anyone do a sleeve to bypass revision? Curious about how recovery time with sleeve compares to bypass revision. Thanks!
  9. Hi there! I was just wondering if there's anyone on here with Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction (condition that causes abdominal pain and makes it so you can't have any narcotic medication) who had surgery? I developed SOD after having my gallbladder removed and am now facing a revision surgery from sleeve to bypass. Since I developed SOD after I had my initial sleeve surgery, I have never had surgery where I had to worry about developing spasms. I am trying to find out if there are strong enough non-narcotic pain medications that could manage my post-op pain. I know it's an uncommon condition, but thought it didn't hurt to ask as many of us have had our gallbladders out. Thanks!

How much time in the hospital?

I was there for 3 nights, but then again I had a revision. Sent from my LG-K540 using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. I had the band in June 2012, and started the process of band to Sleeve revision in April. In May, I had the EGD done and found out that my band has slipped. I was told that I had to lose 17 pounds before they would schedule my surgery, and I am having a REALLY hard time losing it. I'm trying.... I'm trying very hard actually, but it's just not coming off like I need it to. So far I have lost 9 1/2 pounds, and have 7 1/2 left to go. My next weigh in is the 21st, and I'm trying so hard to hit my goal so that they will schedule my surgery. I'm eating an average of 20 - 25 grams of carbs per day, and average of 1200 - 1300 calories per day, and trying to walk every day (I was just released last week from going to physical therapy twice a week for my back). ANY and ALL advice on how to hit my goal is VERY much appreciated!! Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

I just had my band revised and sleeve surgery completed 8/8, I certainly hope that doesn't happen. So far, so good.

How many carbs do you try to stay under? Band to sleeve revision surgery 1/16/17 HW: 283 CW: 190 GW: 160
  14. I'm almost 7 months out from sleeve surgery and feel great. I can eat a good deal and not much seems to upset my stomach. I have a question for you MFP users. What exactly do you track? Right now I feel like if I eat over 800 calories I don't lose (I can eat way more than that but I don't and it's a struggle!). I also track my protein at 70 grams I don't track my carbs or anythng else really just shoot for 800/70. Wondering what everyone else is doing??? Band to sleeve revision surgery 1/16/17 HW: 283 CW: 190 GW: 160
  15. I had a revision in May of this year. I had bad reflux but unfortunately the surgery didn't cure my problems. Anyone know if there is something else you can do? Or perhaps get the surgery checked by another surgeon?
  16. I'm having surgery on September 13, and have a wedding reception for my best friend to attend on September 29. I don't suspect that I'll feel much like dancing, and she already knows that I'm having surgery and can't eat or drink, but I definitely want to be there and celebrate this amazing part of her life. Can some of you share how you were feeling that far out? I have had several surgeries before and have a fairly high pain tolerance. This is a revision from a sleeve to the bypass, I just can't recall from when I had the sleeve how I was feeling after 2 weeks... I did go back to work after two weeks with my last surgery, so I'm guessing I'll be okay to go to a reception at 2 1/2 weeks? thoughts?
  17. I am currently in the same boat as you! My band failed in December, had to have emergency surgery to take it out. After going form 223 down to my lowest of 145 I have now crept back up to 172! I am so frustrated and I have seen a doc for revision to sleeve, my insurance won't pay for it however because I am also not considered "obese"! I will probably be self pay, but Im frustrated with the insurance as it was a failure and I should qualify for coverage of revision! LMK how you make out!
  18. Same here, revised this morning. But I got discharged the same day. Trying to figure out how to sleep! Don't have a recliner.
  19. Buh bye band, hello SIPS! Arrived at hospital at 5am, surgery started at 715a... was up and walking by noon. Had my cat scan and swallow test by 3, discharged by 530p and home a little after 6.... I'm super nauseated and sore but dealing ok. Now laying down in bed. I don't like this weird pulling feeling in my tummy and I am having a heck of a time completely emptying my bladder (thanks to the catheter) but I'm managing. BAND out SIPS DS in, one operation. I'm ready to get this journey on the road! Woohoo!!
  20. Thanks for Sharing Steve. Yes, it is tricky figuring out portion sizes. I think best thing to do is to just eat really slow. I have another question. Does anyone know how much time between sleeve and revision to RNY surgery that is required?

Weight loss AFTER removal of excess skin

The closer you are to goal, the happier you will be with your finished product. But if your quality of life is suffering, then getting the panni now, with a possible revision later might work. The surgery is safer and easier when the patient has lost as much weight as possible. My MIL had a 30lb flap taken off.. she hadn't lost weight prior to the surgery. The scar looks good now, but her recovery was difficult. She didn't lose weight postop either, so I don't know what it would look like if she did. Her swelling was significant for 6 months or a year I think. (The fluid collected in her pubic-hair region.. looked like a half-cantaloupe under the skin). Don't know if being near goal would be helpful for that.. likely!
  22. I wanted to get some feedback on revision success of band 4 years out what works what does not. I have started the research and consultation process to have a revision to gastric bypass or sleeve

    DS Pariah

I had the sleeve about 8 years ago. I have gained most of my weight back now so I was thinking about finishing off my VSG with the DS now. To me it seems logical: Since I have already had a sleeve I am already half way there so why not just finish it off with a DS? Unfortunately, the surgeon that did my sleeve got killed in a plane crash about 3 years ago so now I am looking for a new surgeon. I have contacted a few places to see what there cost would be and whatnot so I can decide. When I contacted one of the places they tried to talk me out of it telling me that the DS is a very extreme procedure and it is performed only as a very last resort. They told me that usually the only time when they do a DS is if the patient is extremely obese and the patient is going to die at any moment if they do not do it. I am currently 350 lbs and 5'11" for a BMI of 49. Eight years ago when I had the sleeve I was 412 lbs for a BMI of 58. The doctor said that DS patients have a very bad body odor for the rest of their life. He told me that he could always tell when a DS patient was in his office because he could smell them while they were sitting in their office. He said that if I got this procedure I would have social issues the rest of my life because I would always smell bad. I would in effect become a permanent pariah for the rest of my life. People would be ablel to smell me over a mile away! He said that I will have permanent diarrhea for the rest of my life and that my stools will be very foul smelling. It will be like after I go to the rest room it will smell really bad so that everyone will know that I was in the rest room. I can imagine going to church and having to sit by myself in a pew that is far away from anyone and having to use private rest rooms. This doctor also said that since I have acid reflux that he could not do the DS on me. I have however found other surgeons that would be willing. This doctor recommend that I revise to a mini gastric bypass (not sure how that would be possible since the half of the stomach that would normally remain attached to the duodenum piece that would be attached downstream is already gone. I have also found another surgeon that has a different type of DS called the SADI-S that is supposed to be better for acid reflux people like myself but the weight loss results are not quite as good as a traditional DS. What are your experiences? Is the DS really as bad as that one doctor says for your social life? Is this SADI-S a good thing? In my situation would mini gastric bypass be better (even though I am not sure how they would do it)?
  24. This is coming from someone who has a lap band since the end of 2006. I originally tried to have an RNY at the time the insurance denied it. I have never had real success with my band, lost 40 lbs and that's it. I throw up a lot. I'm now about 25 lbs more then when I had surgery. I wasn't the best patient had a lot of traumatic things after the band happen but regardless I always feel hungry. I'm now in the process of trying to get approved for the RNY. If I could go back I wouldn't of gotten the band I wish I would of fought for the other surgery. But I was only 23. I recently went to my group nutrition meeting their were two other prior lap bands and we were all still obese and having revisions done.
  25. I'm in the midst of scheduling my band to sleeve revision. My band was paid by the insurance company but they will only pay for one weight loss surgery in a lifetime (BCBS of AL). My surgeon is going to remove my band at no cost since he was the one that put it in, but I have to self pay for the sleeve and the hospital/anesthesia since the hospital considers it two surgeries - (not sure how being under for one surgery is charging for two surgeries - unless the length of time I am under is what is considered). Anyway - I am a little nervous about 'failing' the sleeve like I did the band. I lost about 90 lbs with the band and gained 60 back.
