Extreme Pain in the Roof of your Mouth with first meal
Nurse Rachael replied to Justin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have the same thing but it is not from your band or from any weight loss surgery you can have this and never had that. it actually is still a mystery to science. some think it comes from being dehydrated so make sure you get lots of fluids and try drinking water first thing in the morning. they have meds for it but mine never last long its pretty painful but goes away in about 5 minutes -
No more body hair?
catwoman7 replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
how old are you? It could also be age-related. Some people lose body hair as they age. I'm in my 60s. I used to have hairy arms, enough that I was embarrassed by them, but now I can't see any hair at all. I haven't had to shave my legs in forever. I do have some hair on my legs, but it's very sparse, fine, and blonde - I can feel it, but no one would be able to see it. if that's not it, I guess it could be hormone-related, although I haven't heard of this particular symptom before. UPDATE: I just found this. It says thyroid changes can also cause hair loss. I'd just check with your PCP - maybe they can run some tests and figure out what's going on: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hair-loss/symptoms-causes/syc-20372926 -
No more body hair?
Soon2bFit21 replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would definitely get a full sex hormone panel to see if something is off. Have you been diagnosed with PCOS before? Losing larger amounts of weight will lower PCOS symptoms (excessive hair growth being one of them) for many people . How far out from surgery are you? There’s also the possibility of a vitamin or nutrient deficiency. -
Good evening, so I did not do the surgery but I did join a weight loss done right program in my area on January 5 and as of today I have lost 68 pounds, (only 32 more to go) the program is very strict, but very easy and the food is quite good!! When it comes to eating out which we do, I am very committed and I basically tell the server immediately, I am sorry to be a pain but I am on a very strict diet so can you please relay to the kitchen staff that my food can have no seasoning, no butter, no oil, everything needs to be completely plain. Also I ask as many questions as needed, such as actual ounces, sauces etc. I actually use a brown bread that I purchase from bariatric pal, and I bring one or two slices with me, I either bring my own seasoning or I just use their salt and pepper. When it comes to salad dressing again I bring my own or I order just plain white vinegar. I usually order a 6 ounce steak or the 8 ounce salmon, again no butter, no seasoning, no oil. I get a double order of plain steamed broccoli and a side salad with only lettuce, tomato and cucumber. I will sometimes bring my own cucumber and hearts of palm. lol just carry a larger than usual purse, honestly no one cares and you should be very proud of yourself for loosing the weight and especially proud of adhering to the food restrictions because that shows your strength. I am not embarrassed or ashamed of ordering specifically as I know I am a healthier , happier and skinnier me. LOL i wish you the best of luck, you’ve got this!!!!

Something weird is happening. Before surgery I was very hairy. I had to shave my legs and armpits a few times a week. I also had laser hair removal on my face. Now after surgery....my leg and armpit hair has literally stopped growing. I haven't shaved in months. I no longer have to get laser hair removal on my face. But the weirdest thing so far is that I am losing my pubic hair? At first I thought I was crazy, but then my hubby noticed it too. Is this happening to anyone else after surgery? Why is this happening? Does having WLS change your hormones?

plateaus are a normal part of weight loss. I just stuck to my program, stayed off the scale for a few days, and my weight loss would eventually start back up. Plateaus usually last 1-3 weeks. re: Greek yogurt. I've had that almost every day for breakfast for the last six years - that's been my usual breakfast since soon after I had surgery in 2015. A denser protein does tend to keep you satisfied longer, but there's definitely nothing wrong with eating Greek yogurt! and yes - I usually have a morning snack and an afternoon snack - I just make sure to work the calories in to my meal plan for the day. I eat all the stuff you mentioned - beans, seeds, fruit. I can't remember when I added them - but probably around where you are now. Check with your clinic and see if it's OK to start adding them.

Pregnant 4 months post op
Nurse Rachael replied to Brittney_vsg's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
i had the surgery November 29 2010 found out i was pregnant ( while on nuvaring) in june . I had lost a little over 50 lbs and was told that the amount of weight loss causes the estrogen from your fat cells to release this is why the birth control did not work. They did not tell me this before surgery. I actually had a great pregnancy this was my 3rd. i gained 25 lbs they monitored me closely and let some of the fluid out of my band . i had more ultrasounds to make sure the baby was growing which was great to me since i could see her more. i craved fruit salad . i had a scheduled C-section due to my other 2 being a c-section. I made sure i took my vitamins and tried to eat healthy . The end of pregnancy i had more acid reflux but that's pretty common. she came out a healthy 7 lbs 8 oz i breastfeed for 3 months and got back to prepregnancy weight loss at 6 months after. i think it was a little over a year after before i added a fill back to my band. -
Hello, I am almost three months out and I have hit the dreaded plateau for two weeks now without any weight loss. I am told by my NUT to stick with the program, but I really feel bored with my diet. for breakfast, when I don't wat eggs, I eat feta and gouda cheese or low fat greek yogurt, but I read somewhere that these go down quickly and may not be considered "solid food" as such, and cause one to get hungry much sooner. For lunch and dinner I eat a small piece of chicken and grilled veggies. I don't have fruits. I try to get as much water in between as I can. I also feel hungry just an hour or two after the meal. Any of you experience the same? Do you snack or only do three meals a day? I exercise at least three days a week. I am also curious to learn your diets. For instance, how did you break the plateau? do you eat lentil and fava beans (I love both!), fruits, seeds, and if so when did you introduce them after surgery. Many thanks.

Results for people who began with a BMI of 30-35?
Arabesque replied to Sarahgirl10's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There are a couple of general adages to go by: 1: The more you have to lose the more you’ll lose in the beginning. 2: You will lose at the rate that’s best for you. Some people lose slowly, others more quickly but both are right. It’s not a race or a competition. 3: The closer you are to goal, the more slowly you’ll lose. Simple things we say but all are true. Honestly, the reason why this has been the most successful weight loss experience I’ve ever had (& I’ve done a lot: diets, clubs, medications, ...) is that I’ve actually stuck to the changes I made to my diet to lose the weight. In the past, I’d reach my goal & then I’d slowly but surely go back to how I used to eat & I’d start to gain again sometimes within a week or so. I’ve never stuck to it as I am now. That has been the difference for me. Good luck. -
I'm losing my hair!!
Arabesque replied to LonglivetheGranny's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think the anaesthetic messes with your hair causing it to become frizzy & dry. Mine went like that too & I had to wait for it to grow out. I tried a couple of hair masques/treatments but ... 🤷🏻♀️ Hair oils can be helpful to smooth frizz & add lots of shine. I still like moroccan oil (not good for blondes apparently though) but any of the argon oils are good. -
Any one go to Blossom without a companion?
BSNJ replied to evlfred's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went to Blossom in Aug 2020. I went alone. I flew from NJ to Vegas. I had a companion from Blossom. She was very helpful after the surgery. During this time, Blossom did not allow guests in their buildings. A guest would have been sitting in the hotel alone. I had no issues with the plane ride. I just took my time. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I highly recommend Blossom and theit services. My weight loss journey was well worth it. Good luck. -

What's your best post op advice?
ShoppGirl replied to Sarahgirl10's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Trust the process. It’s so easy for those of us who have done the yo yo diets to worry that this won’t work for us but if we follow the plan it will. And you will lose weight at your own pace. Try not to compare your weight loss (or recovery for that matter) to others as it is very individualized. You got this!! -
What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
KCgirl061 replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
According to the formula others have given (5 ft = 100lbs +5lb per inch after) at 5’4” my ideal weight is 120. I got down to 125 and I was incredibly thin to the point I was urged to stop my weight loss by my husband, friends, and coworkers. Unless waif thin is the look you’re going for, the BMI chart and formula is a little excessive (in my opinion) -
What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
catwoman7 replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
yes - it's simplistic. It may give you a ballpark, but ideal weights will vary a lot depending on so many things. My mother-in-law and I are both 5'6". She's always weighed in the 115-125-ish range. When I got down into the 130s a couple of years after my RNY, I looked like hell. No way could I have looked healthy if I weighed what she does. I actually look my best at around 150. But I have big, heavy bones and I'm very muscular. She has these little bird bones. She's probably look fat at 150. That's probably why BMI ranges are so wide - I think the normal range for someone my height is 114-154 (I know the top number for sure - not sure on the 114 because there's no way in a million years I'd ever be there, so it's irrelevant to me) also, my dietitian said that she doesn't pay that much attention to BMI ranges with bariatric patients because a lot of us have heavier bones and muscle than people who've never been severely obese since we needed that infrastructure to hold up all that weight. Of course, you lose some bone and muscle during the weight loss (and it's fine - you won't need all that anymore) - but you'll likely still have some of it when you get to goal - or moreso than someone at the same weight who's never been obese before. And of course, that extra bone and muscle means extra weight... -
I'm losing my hair!!
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to LonglivetheGranny's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So I’ve lost a lot of hair but again, only noticeable to me. I knew this going in and I made my peace with hair loss pre op. Here’s my question to everyone though- my hair is very dry and frizzy, but I’m having problems finding nourishing/frizz fighting products that don’t weigh down my fine, long, thin hair. Any suggestions? -
How much weight did you lose before surgery?
lizonaplane replied to lizonaplane's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@SummerTimeGirl Yeah, I am afraid I might start some food funerals. I was planning to do Indian buffet when I visited my friend this weekend, but the buffets still aren't open due to COVID, so we ordered off the menu. I overate a little, but not nearly like before. Next weekend I'm going to my parents' house and we're going to my favorite restaurant and I know my brother is going to want to order every course, so that might be a lot too. The truth is that now that I'm eating more protein and fewer carbs, I'm just not as hungry and I'm not as interested in a lot of junk food and sweets. My weight loss is definitely slowing down though. -
What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
PolkSDA replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
In all honesty, I really don't care how I look. It's how I feel that matters to me. I've never really been interested in how others perceive me (hence my being a lifelong bachelor utterly oblivious to fashion/hair styles). I dress for comfort, not other people's opinions, and this journey has been about my health and my comfort and mobility; how I feel physically. If someone else likes the appearance of the "new me" compared to the old, that's fine and dandy, but that's never been a goal unto itself. Lowering the initial weight goal is more about "ok, that goal may have been reasonable at the time, but given the progress thus far, I think I can do better." But again, it's about me, not anyone else. I'm just an old fart that's set in his ways enough to not really care about how others think I look. Some may consider that self-centered... but that's a them problem, not a me problem. *shrug* -

What should I aim for in terms of healthy goal weight?
PolkSDA replied to ThanaK's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That "ideal" calculation is really too simple, isn't it? It doesn't factor in frame width, being "big boned", etc. Two people can be the same height but have vastly different frames/structures. I'm 6'1", which by the above calculation sets my ideal weight at 178 pounds. I would look absolutely emaciated at that weight, given that my frame is fairly wide/broad-shouldered. Depending on your body type, these sorts of formulas can create some really unrealistic (and unhealthy) expectations IMO, especially if people take the concept of "ideal" as a target to strive for... in the vast majority of cases that ideal, i.e., 100% of excess weight lost, is not realistic. I started at 383 and my surgeon and I started with a target of 250. If I hit that weight, I would consider the journey a success. Alternatively, the above formula sets the target at 239.5, which isn't far off the mark... although if you use online obesity calculators, 6'1" and 240 is still considered obese... go figure. As I approached my original goal faster than expected, I revised the goal downward from 250 to 225. I'm now at 10.5 months from date of surgery, and while my rate of loss has slowed drastically (as expected), that revised goal is now too in sight at 230.4. -
I had sleeve, I love sugar. I can eat about 200 calories of pure sugar an hour without any issues. If I try to eat more than 200 calories of sugar in an hour, I will feel kinda gross and nauseated. But there are a lot of hours in a day. It's very easy to eat yourself fat on sugar with a sleeve if you don't address the issues behind your disordered eating and get control of it. While weight loss surgery DOES help you slow down and have more reaction time to your bad habits....Weight loss surgery doesn't fix your head. Fixing your eating habits will still be up to you.

I wanted to update! Stalls are real and frustrating but keep going and it will come off. I am now almost 6 months post op and have lost 45 lbs. I’m still losing slowly but the point is I’m still losing. Expect stalls and don’t compare your loss to others. I am off all meds and exercising 3 days a week...things I haven’t done in years!

Freaking out!! read you barely lose weight from sleeve 2 Bypass
catwoman7 replied to PeachesAus's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
"they" say (whoever "they" are) that weight loss is never as quick or significant with a revision as it is with a virgin surgery, but some people can lose quite a bit of weight with them. I've read the average is about 20 lbs - although that's an average so I would think that includes people who lost most of their excess weight with the sleeve and are doing the revision because of GERD. I don't know what the stats are if you only include people who had the revision when they were still quite a ways from goal. I would think you could make it, but again, it's probably going to be slower and more difficult than with a virgin surgery. -
Is my weight loss okay or slow?
catwoman7 replied to fitgal2021's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
we normally just see big losses the first month, because that's mostly water. And by "big loss", for most of us, that means 15-25 lbs (there are some who have bigger drops than that, but unless they're the size of people on "My 600 lb Life", it's not that common). after the first month, a loss of 10 lbs a month (again, for the average WLS patient - NOT the people on TV) is pretty normal. so in other words, you're fine.
