Has anyone kept their surgery a secret?

Yep! After my lapband failed in 2012 people told me how they really felt! I found out many who I thought were supportive were not at all. So when I decided to get sleeved (Dec 9, 2019) I only let a hand full of family know!

  6. I finally get to move to soft foods on 01/07/2020. Been on liquids sine my surgery on 12/9/19. Just wondering what your first soft food meal was. I’m think soft scrambled egg for breakfast, 2 ounces tuna for lunch and 2 ounces of grilled salmon for dinner. Any other ideas / suggestions?
  7. It might be time to consider a revision. It has been discovered that bands have a limited lifespan and that there are very few that continue doing what they were designed to do after approx 10 years. They also do a lot of unseen damage.

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Yesterday, Monday, Dec. 30 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / ??? lbs (last weigh in 115.0 lbs on Dec 18th) ---------------------------------------- Man, we were gifted a Pecan Pie from our neighbour yesterday and it is so delicious. I had 2 half slices yesterday and as I type this I am contemplating getting another 1/2 slice. I'm hoping that Mr. and the Kid finished it off by now because while I didn't have any serious dumping, i did get a racing heart for like 30-40 mins and got pretty tired after I ate it each time yesterday (and the macrons and truffles probably didn't help either). All these holiday treats and snacks in the house right now will be the death of me. ---------------------------------------- 1:30pm - salad w/ vinaigrette + cheddar + cucumber + carrots + 6 grape tomatoes + 1 slice prosciutto + 6 mussels in white wine sauce + 1/2 slice pecan pie 5:30pm - 3/4 cup greek yogurt + 1 oz blueberries + 1 tsp chia seeds + 1 oz almonds + 1/4 cup full fat milk + 2 french macarons + 3 seed crackers + 2 tbsp peppercorn paté 8:00pm - salad w/ vinaigrette + 1 tsp grated parm + cucumber + carrots + 10 mussels in white wine sauce 11:30pm - 1/2 cup greek yogurt + 1 oz blueberries + 1 tsp chia seeds + 2 Lindt Lindor Dark Chocolate Truffles + 1/2 slice pecan pie ---------------------------------------- Totals: 1742 cals - 89g Protein - 168g NET carbs - 75g fat
  9. Hi everyone, I had my initial surgery 10 years ago. I lost 98 lbs and it brought my 5'6" frame to a svelte 156.00 lbs. I was looking and feeling great. Then I started to get sick and was passing out about 2 years post-op. I found out my lapband had slipped and I went in for a revision. Again 3 years later I had to have another revision. After that time I gained weight and leveled at 180 lbs. I didn't like the number but with exercise I looked okay and felt good, so I was okay with it. Push forward 4 years and I have gained another 25 lbs and now weight 205 lbs. I have tracked my food intake for one-full year and I average 1100 calories per day. So how in the heck can I now weigh 205 lbs? I went to the surgeon and was sent for a swallow test and was told my lapband had been tilted and was extremely tight and there was no reason to gain weight. I was documenting food right down to one tic tac. Last month I had a double hernia surgery and it was performed by a surgeon who also handles gastric weight loss surgeries (not my original surgeon). He stated that my port was located in a weird area, and not the norm, the port was disconnected from the band and therefore, was not working! Not what I was told by my original surgeon. This surgeon re-connected the band and stated, the band is not tilted, nor is it too tight since it was empty, and he can fill it in February. My question is this: I keep feeling bloated and I continue to gain weight, I am currently 209 lbs. I cannot locate anything online that states how many calories is normal for labband patients. I find diets up to 4 weeks post op but nothing for long term. Would I be okay with 1100 calories and making that up with 75-80 grams of Protein per day? Should I be doing less calories? Has anyone been successful with 21 day fix or some other program in addition to the lapband? I really need help I do not want to continue to climb the ladder of weight until I am adjusted. Thank you!

I am having vitamin water zero once a day to give myself something other than protein shake. My diet lets me have a small meal at the end of the day (but I have to do this for two solid weeks), so I am a little luckier than most. There are some days that it was hard for me to get both shakes in just because I'm so tired of artificial sweeteners. I *do* have sugar free jello for the post op, though. I also got protein bone broth powder for actual like... soup. It's bone broth broth (lol) with 10 grams of protein, but that's for after surgery since I'm limited to the two shakes and meal and 64oz minimum water.

I don't have a special bathroom scale, but Target has a sale right now. I do have a scale that I keep in my bathroom and I'm currently weighing myself every morning and before I go to bed. We are very close to surgery, I need to be sure to lose these 10 pounds, so far so good.

  13. @okayestmom : During the conversation I told her that WLS patients that pursue plastic surgery keep more weight off at the 10 and 15 year mark I have read this as well. One aspect for me at least, is that I just sunk a bunch of money into this so I BETTER keep the weight off! Avoidance of money-wastage is a HUGE motivator for me, LOL. ...gaining weight without my usual gym schedule. I was a slow loser and even gained some on this journey. The gym not only helped with my weight, but my overall health and well-being. At first it felt like a second job I had to go to. I started going twice a week to a 30 minute beginner class and doing the free Sat. morning class. I was a total couch potato too pre-wls. Started out small like you, and now I consider myself relatively active. Prior to the plastics I normally run 5km a day plus 15-20 mins of some strength training of one body part or another. I started walking around the block (600m) a couple days ago and while it was exhausting, it felt really good to be moving around again. I'm itching to get back to my running routine as I have this irrational concern that what little muscles I have are wasting away.... Do you know when you will be cleared for exercise/lifting? ..my adult children call them poor people tax omg, that is what my family calls them too! LOL

    Frustrated with my doctor's office!

Okay then you are DEFINITELY in a position to make your own nutritional decisions. Best thing I can recommend is to search through these message boards and see if you can find cal intake for people who are as active as you and are still losing weight, and base your plan around them. That's been what's been super helpful to me. This blows my mind. All of the respondents posts do. My surgeon's office is SO HELPFUL. I had a 1 week, 1 month, 3 month, and will have a 6 month and then yearly appointments. They have all been with the nurse practitioner (which is fine) except the 1 month was with my surgeon. Every time I see the NP I also see the NUT for about 10 mins just as a check in. Last time she just said I'm doing so well, keep doing what I'm doing. But I have her card with her direct line if I need it. Every time I've called their office they either get my an answer on that call, or call me back the same day with an answer. They gave me a card with things to watch for and the day and night phone numbers to call. I guess I should consider myself lucky.

    I'm so upset, I'm a slow loser

Yeahhhh...I am approaching my 1 year mark and Im still at like 85 pounds lost. If you would have told me that I couldnt lose the 100 pounds I set out to lose in a YEAR I would have had a freakin heart attack. In fact when I had my consultation I asked how long it might take me to reach goal and they said "it takes some people 6 months, some people a year" and I said "A year??" and here I am a year later and NOT AT GOAL. I even revised my goal to 160 instead of 150 because I dont want to get too down. Im honestly just sick of this. I'm a size 10-12. Sometimes I think F--- it. Thats it. I'm done. But then I saw pics of myself at Christmas and I still feel like I have too much fat in my face and I want to lose my extra belly fat. Im so tired of the struggle. I'm tired of seeing other people lose so freakin fast. Im tired of people yelling at me for not being thrilled to lose 80 pounds. Thats LESS THAN 10 POUNDS A MONTH. ugh!! This surgery is not all it's cracked up to be. Its definitely not easy. By the way I do not eat junk food, dont eat deserts, i go to the gym, I eat protein. My body is ajust horrible and doesnt want to let go of fat. Thank you terrible genes.

Don’t know how to take it

I had my sleeve in June of 2018 and my surgeon said my liver looked good at that time. I started having some pain under my ribs in January 2019, I was basically ignored even though my labs were whack. They gave me antibiotics for a UTI at that time. I had gallbladder surgery in April 2019 after I went completely jaundice. To be fare it was initially hard to tell how yellow I was if you didn’t know me. I have had elevated liver enzymes since 2014, but they were not super high (I was told to quit drinking and lose weight which I did, but my labs never changed). They guessed it was gall stones shooting into the common duct. They did a procedure to clear the common duct prior to my gallbladder removal, but they did not find anything. Then they said it could have been caused by the antibiotics they gave me for the UTI in January. Or it could be from a supplement I was taking. I was drinking turmeric tea which I stopped. They also tested me for illicit drugs and repeatedly asked me if I was using anything. I am like yeah, I waited until my kids graduated college to start living the thug life I always dreamed of... They did do a liver biopsy and it came back 5% fatty liver. I think it has to be 10% before they actually call it fatty liver disease. This is after I was down to my goal weight and had been going to the gym regularly for 6 months. The gastrointestinal doc was not concerned about fatty liver and my liver enzymes are now in the normal range which is better than pre sleeve. Whatever caused the jaundice resolved after my gallbladder was removed. I am hoping the fatty liver will improve with exercise and continued healthy eating. I generally avoid processed food, but I started doing that in January 2019 in an effort to feel better. I just stuck with it, because it probably is better for me. Now that everything is normal I can pursue my illicit drug use...but apparently I suck at it because I didn’t use all my pain meds from my plastic surgery. Maybe I am just not the opioid type, maybe I need the blue meth like on breaking bad. I would just smoke some weed, but I am afraid I’ll get the munchies and bust my pouch. Plus I am an ex cigarette smoker and I don’t want to hurt my lungs anymore. Not getting the yearly bronchial infections has been nice. I also remember reading that fatty liver can occur during rapid weight loss. My weight loss was not that rapid compared to others though... Hope it all turns out okay.
  18. I get pooped out from just walking around too, so apparently I didn’t get the super healing powers either. The Doc I saw at my follow up yesterday was the intern. I still have a lot of soreness in my thighs, she felt around and said I do have a lot of loose skin where they did the liposuction. During the conversation I told her that WLS patients that pursue plastic surgery keep more weight off at the 10 and 15 year mark, so there is a health benefit. Surprisingly she did not know this, but she did say that they will probably be allowed to do more procedures in the near future, and that they could do more with my thighs. While that is certainly good news, I wasn’t talking about me getting more surgery. This is like giving birth, I need some time to forget about the pain before I do it again. 😂😂 Plus I am terrified that I am gaining weight without my usual gym schedule. I was a slow loser and even gained some on this journey. The gym not only helped with my weight, but my overall health and well-being. At first it felt like a second job I had to go to. I started going twice a week to a 30 minute beginner class and doing the free Sat. morning class. The weird part is that the gym I ended up at isn’t air conditioned and only has space heaters. The staff is basically former athletes (some with significant sports injuries) and most have degrees in kinesiology. They do have personal training, but the 30 min classes are only $10 and they make sure you are doing things correctly so you don’t hurt yourself. They even give you a modified exercise if they know you have a particular injury. I almost wish it was a chain so I could share this experience with everyone. I never would have tried lifting weights if I wasn’t at this gym. I miss it now even though I couldn’t lift that much. I can ‘t wait to get back at it. There probably isn’t anyone on here very close to me (Central Texas) but the name of the gym is Oppose Gravity and they are on Instagram. Plus, the gym members come in all sizes and shapes. I started in a beginner class and I couldn’t do one sit up, I can do a bunch now. I also could barely do a squat because of my bad knees, but all the exercise actually improved my knees and I have less clicking than before. There were a couple of times I have had to wear the braces because I did to many burpees or jumping. I also cannot do an actual push up yet, but I will get there. I can plank and do girl push ups. Now I just need to find a way to make going to the gym my job and vacationing/shopping for my free time. Guess I need to buy a lottery ticket...my adult children call them poor people tax, but I call them $1.00 hopes and dream tickets. As long as you just get the one every once in a while...

I shared that I've been gaining weight and I don't know why, well I'm down 6 pounds and I have 10 more to go before my pre-op appt on the 17th. I have been in a soft liquid diet phase, lots of protein. Going full throttle by the end of the week, into liquid mode. Going to pick up some more sugar free Popsicles and jello tomorrow. All I'm thinking about are pancakes and waffles, smdh.
  20. I have gained so much from this community that I wanted to share my own experience in hopes that it would comfort someone else. I had gastric sleeve July 18, 2019. Like most people, the weight just fell off the first three months (25 lbs.) then I hit the dreaded plateau in November; for some reason my body wanted to hang out at 160. I was worried I was done losing. I started to step up my exercise to get over the hump, but then I injured my knee. Long story short, I am now losing again even though I can’t exercise just yet due to a knee sprain. I know gastric sleeve is supposed to take away your hunger; that did not happen for me. I most definitely get fuller faster, but I find myself eating more often and not losing. My appetite has always been my Achilles heel; I am always hungry. I started taking Contrave, and ai am now losing again. It really helps control my appetite. It felt so great to jump on the scale This morning and see 156lbs.. Stalls are frustrating, but they do happen and you can even stall for three months. Don’t lose faith, and don’t beat yourself up. You will start losing again; it just takes time.
  21. Hello, I had my bypass in August 2019 and everything was going great. However, about 2 months post op, I started experiencing some dizzy episodes where my limbs would go weak, my head start spinning and I would get either white bright spots or fully dark vision. I also noticed that it is particularly bad while I'm in the shower and I have actually collapsed a few times now. Has anybody else experienced this? Normally I lay on the floor and take deep breaths and it passes after 20 minutes but leaves me drowsy and delirious. I'm just waiting for results from my drs after I had a blood test and an ECG. The nurse told me that my heart rate was a little slow on the ECG. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I find the episodes very scary. Many thanks!

    Surgery Tomorrow

Hi everyone I really appreciate they words of encouragement. Procedure was at 10 today. The pain meds they give don’t even touch the pain and I don’t know what to do I keep telling them. All they come back with is well they cut your insides and outside so your gonna have pain....
  23. Had RNY Dec 10, 2019 and on pureed stage. Haven't had any issues until last night I cramped so bad like horrible contractions ladies! I took a couple of gas x and it calmed down a bit. I am taking protonix daily and my last BM was 2 days ago and I emptied out everything! So, again today I had pureed rotisserie chicken and about an hour later I had the excruciating stomach cramps but started throwing up which was just spit and it seemed to have calmed my cramping! I do have phenergan I can take but I am feeling better now! Wonder if it is the chicken due to that is the only thing I had yesterday and today both and it was dark meat I pureed. Any ideas of what is happening? My 2nd post op is Jan. 8th. Getting in 48-64oz of fluids a day. Thanks in advance!

Weight loss is going very slow.

I upped calories and protein and I lost 5 lbs in the last 10 days. When i was eating 500 to 600... losing less. 700 to 850ish coming off easier. I dont believe necessarily in starvation mode but I'm eating pretty much low carb so I think that's helping as well even with a bit more calories Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. I passed my psyche eval just have my EGD, FINAL DIETARY CONSULT, AND A1C reduction (9.9 needs to be below 9) to go. I've been put on jardiance for a1c. When I first started this I lost 6 pounds in 1 month but have gotten sick twice since then and couldn't exercise. Been trying to stick to the dietary changes and I joined a gym but haven't been able to go much. Fell off the treadmill (lol) and work. I don't think I've lost honestly think I'm back to my original wait the one I've been stuck on for 10 years 246. I am doing this because I'm tired of my diabetes. I think my husband is scared of either me dying or me leaving him. I feel he needs counseling for prevailing issues of infidelity (i think this is why he thinks I want to do this.keep trying to explain it's not about him or what he's done..he doesn't understand that Ive tried weightloss exercise and all but I'm still sick)anyway. My doc says it's pretty similar to gall bladder surgery which I had 2 years ago ( I apparently took a swing at the nurse trying to wake me up..fun time). This year I've had to deal with cancer and a possible IUD related miscarriage of sorts among other things. Im thinking of making regular psych appointments so that the stress won't get me back here. After talking to people that seems to be the trend that causes relapse into weight gain. I've checked my nervous eating tendencies over a year ago. This is rambling a bit but I'm trying to remember it all. The closer I get the more nervous and scared I get about it. Sent from my SM-J737A using BariatricPal mobile app
