    Vegan or Vegetarian RNY Mentor

Way to go vegans I am having bypass surgery on May 25th - was a vegetarian off and on and really looking at options - I will be following this chat group[emoji178] Sent from my SM-G935P using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Hello everyone! I'm about 3 1/2 weeks post-surgery (sleeved on 4/26) and I wanted to share with you all some resources I've found helpful in tackling this part of the journey. Apps/Websites Labdoor.com (Free) - "Labdoor is an independent company that tests supplements. We find out whether products have what they claim and if any harmful ingredients or contaminants are present. Then, we grade and rank those products, write reports, and publish that information for free, so consumers can confidently buy the best supplements for their health." My surgeon and medical team has me on a daily multivitamin, B-complex supplement, probiotics, calcium + vitamin D, iron, and a protein drink. I used Labdoor to find the best ones for me. ***The top protein was Muscle Feast Whey Protein Supplement so I bought it and I recommend it. The flavor is really mild, like a watered down chocolate milk. It mixes really well in my blender bottle, and there's no added sugar. Thumbs up! Amazon Subscribe & Save (Prime) - All those supplements are expensive, so I use the subscribe & save feature on Amazon to get the 15% off and the supplements get delivered every other month. It still kind of costs an arm and a leg, but if you already have Prime it's really worth it to get the extra 15% savings, plus then you don't have to worry about running out because it ships automatically. My "mini-pharmacy" (as my boyfriend and I lovingly call it) is set to arrive tomorrow. MyFitnessPal Premium - I used the free version of MyFitnessPal for the year leading up to my surgery and it was great. I decided to go with premium after surgery since there are such specific needs with grams of protein and carbs and stuff. The main difference (for me) with the free vs. paid is that I can set more personalized goals (ex: 70 grams protein, less than 50 grams of carbs) and track the nutrients I actually care about; carbs, protein, fat, sugar and nutrients/vitamins. It also allows you to change the names of meals in your diary so instead of using breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I use blocks of time like 7AM - 9AM, 9AM - 11AM, 11 AM - 1PM, etc. Since I don't eat traditional meals/snacks yet, this works much better for me. Glow App (Free) - A period/fertility app. At my highest weight(s) I stopped menstruating as the result of my weight and my form of birth control (Nexplanon Implant). I would still experience some PMS symptoms but not menstrual fluid, so I had no idea what to expect with my cycle post-surgery. Since my period did return (just one week after surgery) I wanted to be able to properly track it and Glow has been fantastic. It's easy to use, the app is attractive, you can set it to "avoiding pregnancy", "trying to conceive", and "pregnant/nursing". It gives you helpful insights based on your unique circumstances, like if you have Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome for instance. It also syncs up with MyFitnessPal which sends your weight data - this has been great for me because back in the day, I would consistently gain about 2 pounds of water weight right before my period which gives me a warning it may be coming. Gadgets Garmin Index Smart Scale - First off, I'm a total nerd for data. I love charts and statistics and graphs. BUT, I hate calculating those things myself. I really enjoy math, but those things are usually just a bit above my level of ability. So, I really love things that figure the data out for me. So this scale measures weight, body fat, BMI, bone mass, lean muscle mass, and hydration. I find the weight, body fat and hydration most useful. It reports automatically to the Garmin Connect app via Bluetooth or wifi, and I sync that directly into MyFitnessPal. You can set up multiple profiles, so it recognizes individual users. I have a profile for myself and my boyfriend (and also my cat because he likes to sit on it). Garmin VivoFit - A more affordable version of the Fitbit that syncs up with the Index Smart Scale perfectly. The reason I chose this activity tracker is because it syncs with the scale and MyFitnessPal and I don't need any of the more advanced features that other trackers come with. I love that it gives you a little warning light and beep after being inactive for too long which is a good reminder to get up and away from my desk and take a short walk. I also like that it sets walking goals for each day based on my habits. The app that collects the data from both the tracker and scale is great and easy to use, it even measures my sleep! HydroSpark Water Bottle - This hasn't arrived yet because it's on back order but I saw an ad for it on Facebook and wanted to give it a try It's a water bottle that measures your daily water intake and can report it to MyFitnessPal. Like I said, I love data but I'm terrible at recording it myself, so I like that it's automatic. Really the water was the only missing piece of my health tracking puzzle, so I'm excited to see how it works out. Supplements ***Note, these are what I picked based on my individual needs and Labdoor ranking information. I'm a 27 year old woman without other major health concerns except anemia. Your needs will likely differ, this is just a quick look at what works for me. 1. Citracal with Calcium D Slow Release 1200 2. Garden of Life Vitamin B Complex (Vegan) 3. Garden of Life Whole Food Probiotic Supplement - Primal Defense ULTRA 4. Garden of Life Multivitamin for Women (Vegetarian) 5. Celebrate Iron+C (Chewable - Mandarin Orange) 6. Metamucil Fiber Capsules 7. Muscle Feast Hormone Free Chocolate Whey Protein Isolate 2lb I hope you find at least one thing that's helpful to you. I'm a research fanatic, so if you have any questions about other stuff - please ask! I may have already looked into it and can share at least a little insight

    I'm lost

Syntrax and Unjury protein powders are 100 calories, and 0 carb, 0 fat, and 0 sugar and 23 grams of protein. BUT...they are whey proteins. You'll really have to look at vegetarian options if you can't have whey.

    Good protein powder?

I used bariatric advantage meal replacement in vanilla. https://www1.bariatricadvantage.com/catalog/us-en/11/Protein I also used Thorne whey protein in chocolate. They also make a vegetarian version.

    Weaning off CPAP

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I stopped using my CPAP five nights ago after my doctor's consent. Since then, I've been getting only about five hours sleep each night. What's odd is I don't feel tired during the day. My doc did a night oximetry and my numbers were great, although I only slept about five hours that night, too. I told him this and he said it might take several nights to get used to not wearing it. He said he'd be more concerned if I were waking up a lot six months out. I usually get seven hours sleep with the CPAP. Has anyone else had this problem? My rny was in March, 2016, and I now weigh 207#, down from 410# when I started the process. I go to the gym every day and eat a vegetarian diet. I'm a 6', 49-year-old male. Sent from my LGMS550 using BariatricPal mobile app

Come visit BariatricPal Forums whenever you are ready for more ideas and encouragement in your weight loss surgery journey. Happy Mother's Day! Sincerely, Alex Brecher Founder, BariatricPal Why Weight Loss Surgery, Why Now? There is a right time for every weight loss surgery patient. Something makes you decide to get the surgery, and something makes you decide that the time is NOW. Are you ready? Health: It's a Family Thing Mother's Day is about Mom, but it is also about family. Health is the same way. It is about you, but it is also about your family. If you have been putting off your weight loss surgery because you think it is selfish and takes focus away from your family, you might want to think again. A healthier you means a more energetic you, a more dependable you, and a you that will be around for your family for much longer. Have You Tried Everything Else to Lose Weight? There is no single diet that works for everyone, so it can take several tries. Maybe a different eating pattern will work for you, or some sessions with a nutritionist and a personal trainer can help you develop a lifestyle pattern that can help you lose weight and keep it off. On the other hand, if you have already tried everything else and are sure WLS is for you, ask yourself what you are waiting for. Is the Time Right for You? Of course you should not get WLS if you have doubts or are not ready. It makes perfect sense to explore other options. Maybe you can give yourself a deadline of a year and see how much progress you can make in that time before opting for WLS. Ask yourself, “If not now, then when??” It may be time to bite the bullet and call the surgeon if you know WLS is for you and you are simply waiting for it to happen. Weight Loss Mother's Day Plan What could be better than spending the day with your family, thanking Mom, and hugging your children? Losing weight while you do it can make it even better! Here are a few tips for losing weight this Mother's Day and using it as a springboard for getting motivated for more weight loss to come. Record Your Memories Take photos and videos of everything you do on this day. That will help you remember the good times, and it also can help you lose weight. • The camera does not lie. Take a look at yourself and use it for motivation to finally get weight loss surgery, to stay on your WLS diet so you can hit goal weight, or to keep the weight off for good. • Prove that you ate healthy. Use your camera as motivation to make few healthy dishes so you can be proud of your efforts when you look back at the photos. • Consider the scenery. Do you feel more proud when all of your photos show everyone sitting round the table, or when some of the photos show the family on a walk, at the park, or playing active games such as "Follow the Leader?" Embrace Brunch No way should you skip that family meal. Just make sure it is one you can be proud of. Here are a few brunch ideas so you can be sure to stay low-carb, low-calorie, and high-protein, while you still get full flavor and satisfaction. • Frittata made with cauliflower instead of potatoes to cut the carbs. Try goat cheese and kale, spinach and feta, or zucchini and mozzarella varieties. • High-protein Peach Cobbler Muffins or Blueberry Muffins. • Warm biscuits made with low-carb baking mix, spread with fat-free cream cheese and served with low-fat vegetarian sausage. • Grilled shrimp on a bed of arugula with Low-Calorie Honey Mustard Dressing. • Fruit platter with fat-free ricotta or cottage cheese. Remember to follow your other WLS rules, such as eating slowly and chewing thoroughly. Use the pleasure of the good company to help you savor each bite and pause in between. Make the Rest of the Day Great, Too Build on the good work you did at brunch by keeping it up the rest of the day. Divide up the leftovers and send any unhealthy dishes home with your guests so that you are not tempted to eat them. Invite your family for a stroll, a nature walk, or a game of tag so you all stay active. It would even be a good time to sit down and have a candid talk about your health goals and how you can all work together to achieve them. Healthy Living and Good Parenting: A Tough Act So often, we are taught to put others first. Mothers know this better than most other people; they are often assumed to have no personal needs, and are made to feel that taking care of themselves means they are not taking care of their families. Taking time for yourself to eat right, exercise, and get enough sleep is almost stigmatized! That is wrong. Gaining weight, developing arthritis and diabetes, and operating on low sleep do not do anyone any good. What does help is being on your “A” game, which means losing weight if you need to, staying fit, and sleeping enough. Still, even if you do not feel guilty about it, it is hard to squeeze in the time between cooking and cleaning, helping with homework, and chauffeuring the kids to activities. Here are a few tips. • Make it a priority. Write down your daily goals in your planner so you are committed to them. • Have your kids help you, not hinder you. Play outside with younger ones, and walk outside while older ones have sports practice • Use mealtimes as a challenge to come up with healthy, delicious food everyone will love and can eat. How proud will you feel when your kids see you eating only the good stuff, and how much prouder will you be when they choose it for themselves? • Keep handy snacks around, such as protein bars and protein chips, so nobody needs to dive for the sugar and fat. • Be just as disciplined about your bedtime as you are about theirs. Going to bed is way more important than watching an extra episode of that TV show. Instead, get your workout in while watching TV! This Mother's Day, take pride in yourself and your family. Be thankful for what you have, and protect it and make it better by living your healthiest life. Happy Mother's Day! Stop paying for nutritional supplements! Check your insurance eligibility now! @sleever123 You are claiming to be unhappy about your weight loss. If you want help. Tell us what you are eating so we can offer suggestions. I don't care you aren't eating meat but that doesn't mean you can toast and lose weight. There are other sources of protein. You didn't say you were vegetarian or vegan, you just said you don't like meat. So can you eat eggs? cheese? What can and do you eat? @SassyNanny Basically she wasted everyone who even read her original post by whining in the first post about slow weight loss. Then came back to just complain about everyone not patting her on the head and telling her it was okay. Then still didn't even answer any questions about what she is eating. This is why people don't respond to posts or try to help people. This kind of entitled BS.

    Food options

I have one afterthought... The dietitian at the bariatric practice that sleeved me also included bread and crackers on the list of approved foods I was given. However, just because we're allowed to eat a certain food doesn't necessarily mean we should. I didn't touch bread until after reaching my goal weight. The sooner you eat animal-based proteins such as chicken and fish, the faster you'll start losing. Meats have an extremely high thermic effect, meaning your body must expend a tremendous amount of energy in the form of calories to burn them off during digestion. If you are a vegetarian, this is going to be a potential problem and you will need to be ultra diligent finding tolerable non-meat sources of protein (e.g. beans, flatbread, cottage cheese, eggs) to torch the metabolic fire.

    Macronutrients

I think Dr Matthew Weiner can help you. I went pescetarian for 6 weeks and it was terrible. I was hungry all the time, my carbs were higher than normal, weight loss stalled and I was overall miserable. I can't imagine doing this as a vegan or a vegetarian. I went pescetarian because I was playing with the idea of going vegetarian, but those 6 weeks convinced me it is impossible for me to do. There was one vegetarian that post here. They don't post often and never got anywhere near goal. They could tell you what proteins are okay but I haven't seen them in months.

    Macronutrients

1200 calories, 75 to 80 gm of protein. 100 or less gm carbs, fat is 25 to 30 I think. I have heard of Dr. Davis because of his association with other vegan,/vegetarian doctors. I haven't read his book yet tho. Does he specifically talk about wls patients and protein or the average person and protein? I will definitely look into it. I've never heard of Dr. Weiner. I will look him up. I tried to do 1200 calories but i was lethargic and couldn't do anything but sleep. And I ate tons of veggies. My dietician said I should do that now so I can go back to it later. The problem with that is my metabolism is already slow as it is because I have chronic back pain and haven't been able to work at all. I actually just filled for disability. Anyways, I'm still constantly hungry on this 1500 calorie diet. Atleast I'm not as lethargic. Thank you for your advice Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app

    Baby Food?

I'm using baby food made by Earth's Best. It's not bad. Lol! I don't eat meat so I'm eating the fruit and vegetarian jars.
  14. I agree with @BigViffer Everything you are doing looks okay. When in doubt cut out all processed foods and see what happens. That diet Snapple, no girl no. The veggie patty unless you are a vegetarian there is no benefit for you, eat a normal protein. Overall your food is really good though. I'd give up the cheddar chips though too. I like H20 protein water too. As a rule I try to limit my processed items to one a day max. They will slow your weight loss either will sodium or fake sweeteners. Also thank you so much for asking an educated question with documentation. That was really refreshing compared to most post around here.

Dr Matthew Weiner's Pound of Cure diet

I found his book excellent. The only problem I had was that I am on a low FODMAP program so can't eat legumes and some vegetables. I must be getting enough protein as my six month post op checkup didn't indicate a protein issue and my hair is now growing back. His pound of cure program is for everyone, not just bariatric patients. Vegetarians who have bariatric surgery are able to get enough protein post op so I believe it can be done. Saying that, if your program says no, then you should follow your plan. You can also schedule a skype appointment with Dr Weiner to get his opinion. Good Luck and God Bless
  17. We've used Blue Apron for a few years now. It has generally worked well for us. The recipes are delicious and easy to prepare. It lets me cook (and I'm no chef) on the nights when my partner (who is a great chef) can't. But unfortunately we're quitting Blue Apron. We've had just too many problems with late/missing deliveries and missing/leaking/spoiled ingredients. So now we're looking around for a different service. Purple Carrot looked nice, though it's all vegetarian. Also, it appears to run low on Protein and high on carbohydrates. We'd tried Hello Fresh but were disappointed (I guess "Mostly Canned", while more accurate, doesn't have the same ring). Are there any recommendations out there? We're looking for good, interesting, healthy meals using fresh organic ingredients, low-cal, low-fat, high protein.

    African American vsgers!

I think keeping track of your body fat percentage and lean mass is the best marker of progress. Which is why I like DEXA scans so much. I'm doing great. I have been struggling during Lent since I have up meat. Protein bars have made sick a few times. I am so excited for Easter! Back to all the meats. It has been a great learning experience and I have learned that the way I eat normally really works for me and I can never go Vegan or vegetarian like I had been considering. Too hard to eat right even with seafood included, no meat at all would be impossible. Oh well. Culturally it is interesting to see how people react to me being so small now. I'm heavy in weight at 188 ish but I wear size 8s and 10, a 9 in juniors. So that is pretty small for a Black woman my age. My RNY associate has commented she would never want to be this small it isn't her ideal, lol, but when she first had surgery all she talked about was onederland then she got a man at 250 pounds and decided that was enough weight lost. Now she is back around 300 and borderline diabetic again. A good lesson about losing as much as you can for health and not just losing enough to meet a physical ideal. I liked being curvier, but I enjoy being healthy. Just a few more pounds and I will have lost more than I weigh!

  20. I eat the same things all of the time. Chicken tenderloins and steamed broccoli. Dannon fit and lite. I make a great vegetarian chili. Sometimes I will eats whatever at a restaurant if we go out but just lost interest in food when I had the surgery.
  21. They won't let you exercise until 1 month? My doc said I must exercise starting day 3. No lifting over 10 pounds, but definitely do cardio- walking, treadmill, elliptical, etc I am 1 week out and hungry- lol we are probably that 20% who don't lose their appetite 🙄 But I'm resisting! I hit my protein and water goals so I'm trying to tough it out. I'll give in to a protein shake or 1/2 of one later if I'm still hungry I have a great app that is good for tracking food, carbs, calories, water intake and exercise. Also tracks your weight and bmi, etc. it's so easy. I erased the other apps that didn't seem user friendly. Baritastic Is the app. Try it. It definitly switch to ground turkey or chicken. Maybe some vegetarian re-fried beans. I've been eating fish (cod and Talapia -steamed). Tons of protein, low fat and low calorie...and filling. My doc said I can have cottage cheese and scrambled eggs and soft steamed fish right from the day I left the hospital. I too was surprised, but he said that's fine. And they are a well known NYC practice. I was too scared to eat mushy stuff so soon so I stuck to liquids for the first few days and eat tiny amounts.
  22. Mashed beans, lentils and tofu are all soft foods. Basically, if you can cut it easily with a fork, it is considered a soft food. In fact, other than raw veggies, I can't think of anything vegetarian that wouldn't be considered a soft food. I was actually eating tofu, hummus and refried beans in my pureed stage. However, I'd stay away from the mashed potatoes unless you are adding unflavored protein powder to them. Otherwise they are just empty carbs. and feel free to continue drinking protein shakes if you need to in order to get your 60-80g of protein in. I drank them regularly for several years.
  23. Hi everyone! So I'm 12 days out and I feel completely lost. I'm a vegetarian and I feel like I really don't know what to eat to get a lot of Proteins since I'm in the soft foods stage. I'm leaving full liquids slowly and I really feel like I can eat about anything. Nothing makes me hurt or super uncomfortable. eggs and yogourts are passing less easily but cheese is passing just fine along with paneer cheese, brie, cheese spreads etc. I can eat mashed potatoes and canned vegetables without a fuss from my stomach. Is this normal??? When and should I start eating fake meats or TVP? They are so high in Protein yet low-fat, low-carb... When can I start eating mashed Beans, lentils and so on? I need my tofu back LOL! Any good soft foods recipes? Thank you!!! Hope to meet more bariatric vegetarians!
  24. I'm lucky enough to have a supportive husband. My mom is on the fence but just bc she's worried. A girl I went to school with had bypass years ago and developed a blood clot and died. I had a blood clot in my lung 2 years ago from being over weight. It's scary but I know that means blood thinners after I leave the hospital and I definitely will nor forget to walk walk walk after surgery. I look forward to feeling better physically after surgery. I finished my last nutrition class this month. They submitted to insurance. My surgeon is taking the month of April for vacation. So I'm looking at the end of May they said. Also I was told to keep attending the monthly classes bc if insurance decides they want anything additional, you won't have to start over. I bet once your out of surgery safely you dad will feel better. The hard part will be sticking to your food goals while the family had other goals. I was a vegetarian for a few years, so I know that can be hard. My family is mostly overweight as well. Good luck.
  25. Hi there! Scheduled for revision from sleeve to RNY due to severe GERD. I've been vegan since October 16. I absolutely love plant based diet. Currently using Raw Fit Protein which is a vegan protein powder. It has 28 grams of protein and taste great. Looking to connect with a mentor or mentors that follow a plant based diet. Totally fine connecting with those that aren't as well.
