  1. Hi all.. my name is Wendy. I had the lapband surgery on 05/31/11 and had done really well until about a month ago. My highest weight was 286 and my weight as of Saturday was 141. I started throwing up blood about a month ago. My stoma was becoming eroded from acid reflux. Long story short, I ended not being able to hold anything down and got really dehydrated. I ended up having an emergency revision this past Monday. I am unfamiliar with the sleeve. Can you tell me some of your experience with it?
  2. ive been reading about people having revisions and im wondering if i need it as well,i had sleeve surgery on 11-29-12 and as of today 82lbs is my total weight loss and its been that way for the last 6mos.it seems like i gain and lose the same 5 to 10lbs since may 2013 i started another exercise program a month ago and still nothing and the biggest thing is i can eat alot more than before for instance i can eat a whole low carb breakfast bowl from hardees with no problem.or a whole grilled chicken burrito(see picture) is that normal?but one bad habit i have developed is drinking after i eat other than that i dont know what to do.Is it possible for your stomach to stretch?i was even thinking about trying to get an xray of my stomach to see if my sleeve was done right unfortunately i dont have a regular doctor because of ins.i had my surgery in tj mexico becaues of lack of insurance and was wondering if they used the right bogee, just looking for answer and hope that im still on the right track any and all help will be appreciated
  3. I'm a band to bypass revision myself. Banded in 2011... revised this past March. BEST.CHOICE.EVER. The information on the operation is skewed by old data from older "versions" of the surgery. As medical technology has advanced... this procedure has become exponentially more safe.
  4. I was weighing up the choice between a revision to a bypass or doing nothing - I definitely wouldn't be looking at going against my surgeon's advice. My problem ( and my husbands) is that I still have this belief that I "should"be able to do it on my own.

    Lap Band vs Sleeve

I initially wanted the band because it's reversible and seems less scary than having part of my stomach removed. However, my surgeon talked me out of it. He said he barely does a handful a year and that he spends lots of time doing band revisions and removals. Apparently, a lot of people have had to change from the band to the sleeve. There are a lot of complications like band slippage. With the sleeve, you also don't have to get adjustments or worry about as many follow up appointments. Also, it can restrict your ability to eat healthy foods like raw vegetables and chicken, but then things like ice cream slide very easily down. For me, the main thing that freaked me out was having this foreign object in my body. I read on the internet about people who can see or feel their port through their skin and I didn't like the idea. I think you should talk to your surgeon and do as much research as possible. My surgeon did say that for someone with a lot of weight to lose, the sleeve is better. However, if you don't have much weight to lose then maybe the band could be for you (or you might consider the laparoscopic balloon or another alternative).
  6. What was your approval process like with Aetna? I'm just starting my journey to get rid of this awful band giving me reflux and only lost 25lbs since 2008. Were u made to do a 3 month diet again? I would love to hear your approval stories and how long it took you!

    Free tummy tucks etc.

That's not really correct, you *can* get your Lap Band done through Australia's public system if you're willing to wait long enough and if you have a doctor that operates in the public system. Not many doctors do. To do so, you'd have to contact the hospital and see who they recommend, but just as a guide, the waiting list at The Alfred in Melbourne has been up to 7 years long at times. But cosmetic surgery is an entirely different matter, you'd have to convince a surgeon to give you an item number for the surgery and they're unlikely to because the need for a tummy tuck is not considered to be related to your health the way a Lap Band is. Its cosmetic, and you might get a portion covered (like about $100) but not much more. There's item numbers for things like breast reductions, but then you have to weigh up that the surgeon's taht do them are mostly private and will charge well and above the scheduled fee by thousands of dollars. To find someone to do it in the public system, you're going to again face a long waiting list. And even then, its not completely free, you get 85% of the scheduled fee back, so if your surgeon charges more, you're out of pocket. I would think that you'd almost always have to find a cosmetic surgeon in the private sector becuase of the nature of cosmetic surgery which means it will be done in a private hospital so if you have no private health insurance, you're up for well over $1000 a night for the bed as well. You just really cannot get cosmetic surgery done without private health insurance unless its some sort of urgent disfigurement or similar. When you weigh it up, waiting several years on a waiting list for your band and for any cosmetic surgery, having to pay for aftercare, etc why would you not just take out private health insurance, wait a year to qualify, have the surgery etc? It will cost you little more in the long run and you're not in strife if you need any revision surgery etc. And waiting the year, you'll probably get done a whole lot sooner.
  8. I had the sleeve in March 2018 with hernia repair. The hernia failed and my stomach is in chest . I have acid reflux really bad, has anybody been through this and what revision surgery would be best. Thanks
  9. I am 5 days post sugary, gastric bypass. It is NOT easy. I finally today am feeling a little bit better. I keep telling myself that this period is going to be HELL but follow the program and it will be ok. I had to meditate through the pain at times. Tomorrow I am going to begin with a 2000 step walk. I was feeling low today also but then I got a recipe book in the mail that really lifted my spirits. The food in it looks amazing. Really good looking stuff but prepared in a high Protein low calorie way. I have NOT read the entire book yet but I know the future will look brighter. I have not yet had a chance to read it but I did thumb through it. A GREAT looking pizza recipe in there and I can't wait to try it. Book is: recipes for after weight loss surgery, revised and updated by Margaret Furtado. There are so many amazing looking recipes in there. Pizza, Humus, Sausage and Lentil Soup, Latkes, crab cakes, stroganoff. Looks amazing and the book is loaded with pictures and lots of wonderful looking stuff. I am actually excited and it lifted my spirits. One example recipe is below. AGAIN, I have not read the entire book so I am not sure at what stage I can start this but it is promising. I was miserable but 5 days after surgery I am finally feeling better. Sharing one of the recipes in the book. Pita Pizza: 284 calories. 25.6 grams protein. Makes 4. 4 small 4 inch whole wheat pita breads. 1 can 6 0z, low sodium tomato paste 1 teaspoon dry oregano 1 teaspoon dry basil 1 teaspoon dried thyme 4 tablespoons grated parm cheese 1 cup cooked boneless skinless chicken breast cut into small cubes. Or, chicken italian sausage, or ground meat. 1/2 cup fresh slices mushrooms 1 can, 2.5 oz sliced black olives 3/4 cup (85g) shredded part skim mozzarella cheese Oven 375. Lightly spray a sheet pan with cooking spray. Put on all toppings and bake aprox 15 minutes. Picture of the pizzas look AMAZING. NOW, I have to say I have not read the entire book yet so I am not sure when this recipe can be used but it is good to know that down the road a healthy pizza is possible. Looking through this book raised my spirits. John
  10. I’m supposed to be having my sleeve revised to a bypass in November due to GERD. I have a hiatial hernia for the 3rd time and the surgeon as well as the 2nd opinion surgeon says not to repair the hernia, just revise to bypass. Evidently my cough is acid aspirating into my lungs, and most of my allergy symptoms are from the acid. This is on top of the regular nasty acid symptoms. I had originally asked for the bypass because I already had GERD and I knew that VSG could make GERD worse or cause it if you don’t have it. The surgeon said that if I had another 100# to lose he’d recommend the bypass but he said I probably have a hernia. He’d fix it, therefore fixing the GERD. So, 3 hernias later, I’m revising to a bypass, and I’m terrified. I’ve been very pleased with my sleeve except for the GERD getting worse. So... 3.5 years later I’m finally getting what I originally asked for, but now I have to go through a 3rd surgery (VSG/hernia; hernia again; now bypass) to do it. I should have just pushed for the bypass at the beginning and I’d be done with it.
  11. Update : Had surgery on 9/24/09 lost 25 lbs went for my first fill to find out port is tilted had a revision done on 1/14/10. On date of surgery was 230 lbs now weighing 222 lbs. Lapband Plication Newb

Spice, good luck to you on your journey. I also have a lapband with plication, however, I am a revision patient. I was originally a banded in 2001. You can read more about it on the blog in my signature if you want more information. I have lost about 65 pounds so far and would like to lose about another 40 more. My band is completely empty and I plan on leaving it that way. Take care and please let us know how it goes.

    Its Official

keep us posted -- my doc appt is not until 7/7 and my upper GI on 7/2 I also heard my doc's booking Sept and Oct surgeries now -- so I expect it will be december before I can have a revision.
  17. Welcome KMR! I can tell you, as well as many others, that I would not go with the band. This is from my own personal experience. I currently have my band and am in the process of getting a revision to the sleeve. I have had numerous complications and to this day I am in pain constantly. I would recommend that either you self-pay for what you know is right for you or hang in there until BCBS of MA adds it to the approved list of surgeries. As far as insurance goes, I would definitely appeal to them with lots of evidence. You never know what they are going to say. I would look on the internet for appeals specifically geared towards the sleeve. That will help you with your appeal. Feel free to email. I'm more than glad to share my personal experience with my band. Also check out the band to sleeve revisions section tons of good information. Good Luck! Let me know if I can be of any help. Nichole

    banded twice- enough already!!

Welcome and best wishes with the insurance approval. I'll tell ya the sleeve is fabulous. NO sliming, puking, good foods getting stuck constantly, and the gammet of other issues that are hosted by the band. The sleeve works like the band is supposed to, and the restriction is immediately, and forever. It's not a magic pill, but 10000 times better than the crapband. I've had one as well, and was so glad to be able to revise to VSG.
  19. I had Lap Band surgery in 2004. I can't eat fruits and anything else that is not soft. I have severe GERD and acid reflux. I would like to have revision to Mini Gastric Bypass, all that done in Toronto, Canada. What is that like, is it a good choice? What are the possible problems with Mini Gastric Bypass? How do you maintain weight since it is not adjustable?
  20. 1) depends on your policy....I had a total exclusion on any WLS so I had to pay out of pocket for my revision 2) I would have done it again in a heart beat! I'm 7 months post-revision and my life has been great! with the lapband I only lost 40 pounds, then gained it back and then some...with the sleeve I have restriction, I'm doing the right things and it is paying off....love it!

    Hi Everone!

Welcome Annette! Lots of us in Florida on here! Where are you at? I live in central Florida about 40 miles from Orlando and same from Tampa! I see a dr in Zephyrhills. I was banded in 2009, I had a revision in 2011 and have, also, gained 30 lbs. I have just had a slight unfill becaue my surgeon felt I was eating around the band. I had stayed away from salads because I had a hard time chewing them well enough. He removed .1 ml of fluid and I just had my 1st successful salad in 3 years! I would be glad to be your friend! Karen
  22. Ok It has been years since I have posted on here I am six years out since my revision to RNY. However in the last few months and now in the last few days I can feel sharp pain where the small intestines are connected bypassed on the bottom and I can feel the pain. Its getting worse my surgeon has since retired and I have moved its getting worse the pain I mean, I have been trying to ignore it but now I cannot sleep. I became very Anemic a year ago and they never found the cause. I just want to know if anyone else had this pain and what they did. My wife wants me to ignore it however The pain is increasing across the intestine. any ideas
  23. Is there anyone out there that got sleeved with a relatively low BMI? I’d dropped to exactly 30 the morning of surgery. Had it been lower it would have been called off. Can I expect to loose my weight as quickly as others, given complete compliance (which I have maintained to the letter), or will it take me longer because I have less to lose. Has anyone else been through this? SW 180 CW 171 (14 days post op) GW 140

Went in for Bypass and ended up sleeved

First my hubby had a Lap Band for 13 yrs. He had problems with not being able to eat or drink even wagter. So we went to a Bariatric Center of Excellance. He was going to have his Band removed and revise him to a RNY. When they got in the band had eroded into his liver and they couldn't finish the revision. He was deathly sick for 9 months with abcesses and had 5 differant bacterias. He can't remember 3 months. Fast forward to his DR that performed his removal dropped him!! Finally he had a ablation and a wound vac was put in. Last June we went to Mexico and he was supposed to have a RNY but...NOT!! His right side was totally scar tissue so he ended up with the Sleeve. It has taken him a year to finally figure out how and what to do. His mind tells him he can eat more than his body will allow. But he has lost 135#'s!! But he is still sad he didn't get the RNY. Things are ok now he still deals with mind hunger and I think he is figuring it out. May he continue to loose even more weight. Congratulations on your journey. I look forward to your future posts.

    Weigh In Question

Once you are approved, you are approved. I am also under the BMI with comorbidies and getting a revision from band to sleeve on Feb 8. If they deny you have the surgeon do a peer to peer, that's what I did and I got approved right away.
