1-Week Away from Surgery and got the dreaded call!!!!
Jonna replied to Jonna's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks everyone!! Still working on this, waiting for the doctors office to see if they can get any sort of documentation that shows the hospital has acquired the COE and just waiting for their ID number. I'm giving it till the end of the day, but in the mean time I have made an appt in Baltimore. I will have to go to one of their seminars before they will schedule and appt with the surgeon and I've also contacted Christiana Bariatric, so either way I'm confident I will succeed in getting a new surgery date!!! I went to church yesterday and the pastor said that he had to go to Baltimore today to see a 26 yo girl that needed a double lung transplant, my wanting to have an elective surgery is nothing compared to what some are going through!! I prayed all day for that young lady and hope God will touch her with his healing hands!! -
A lot of programs provide their patients with binders or handbooks that detail all this info. If the program you choose does not, you can make your own with a binder from the dollar store. You can separate it by Vitamins, Protein supplements, and food/diet/recipes. Google online for bariatric handbooks to give you an idea. Mine was my bible for those first few months.

Sorry, I don't have Tricare but I can tell you that the bariatric surgeon I went to in Colleyville (Dr David Kim) was able to answer all of my insurance questions before I even contacted Aetna. There are quite a few in the area. You can call around and ask them if they accept Tricare and what the specifics are.

All new to this WLS from California!
amyallthetime replied to nomorequitting's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also in California on medi-cal. I live in the Bay Area. How about you?I was referred by my PCP to Stanford Bariatric Clinic. They had me fill out a questionnaire and I had to wait for a surgeon to review my information before they would allow me to do anything else. I just got word they cleared me to get the process started. The clinic said they would be calling me tomorrow to go over information and schedule my seminar. Good luck to you! -
the dreaded question.....
LisaM replied to lovemyboys's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One thing that gave me comfort about going through Kaiser is they have never had any deaths since they started their bariatric program. But, they attribute this to carefully screening their patients to make sure they're healthy. So, if you're in good health overall, and have co morbidities under control, you should really have little to worry about. -
Done my part...Now hurry up and WAIT!!!

Congrats on getting all of the pre-op stuff done! Really, 2 months is not bad compared to what I see others go through so you are doing great. I am just starting this journey myself. I'm in the process of getting all my past medical records right now. Then, I have an appt w/my PCP on Tuesday to discuss WLS and log in as my first visit for the supervised weight loss I will need to do for 6 months. The following Saturday, I am going to a seminar w/Scottsdale Bariatric Center. I'm not sure if this is the bariatric surgeon that my PCP will recommend, but its a well respected one so I figure it can't hurt to go and get more info ASAP. -
You would be amazed at how many surgeons are doing bariatric surgery but aren't certified in it........

I am a 45 year old male who played college football. I have total knee replacements in both knees. When active, my optimal weight was between 210 and 220 pounds. My body fat percentage averaged 15 percent as measured by water. I currently weigh 325 pounds with a BMI of 52%. I am currently disabled and on Medicare. I have an appointment with a Bariatric doctor this week to discuss if I should have lapband or gastric bypass surgery. Due to my knee limitations and prolonged disability, I am concerned about not being able to maintain a healthy weight long term with the lapband and the possibility of eventually getting a gastric bypass. I would appreciate any and all opinions which surgery I should favor before meeting with my doctor. Thank you.

Newbie Here With A Late Sept 2012 Date Set!! -- Pennsylvania
RhondaMarie posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello... my name is Rhonda and I am a 38 yr old lady from NW Pennsylvania. I live with my boyfriend and have a 13 yr old son. WLS was always in the back of my mind, but the ignition point was my gall bladder crapping out in late Feb of this year. My doc wasn't the general surgeon I had requested, but rather his partner. They say things happen for a reason & my finding Dr. Kalim this was def divine intervention. Yes, it's his business, but he was very tactful in addressing my weight even before I had my lap chole. Upon my post op from the lap chole, Dr. Kalim again mentioned my WLS options. I have to tell you, I work at the same hospital and the bariatric program is relatively new. I had worked with some of the key players in various roles before. So when he asked me to go to a seminar and walked me into the program coordinator's office... I felt I HAD to go out of professional courtesy!! Eventually I got my mind right and realized that I wanted to pursue this for ME!! My gb issue and being assigned to Dr. Kalim was the path laid before me. I have to say it's a joy to be so close to my care team!! They work extremely hard to make EVERYONE feel comforted and secure. At the 1st visit we mapped out the first three months and all of the extras (ie EGD, psych, dietary, sleep study, etc.) At the 3rd month we mapped out preads, consent and clearances and surgical date. I have one more nutrition class (out of 3), preads, my 6th monthly visit and final pre-surg visit with my doctor to go. I would be lying if I didn't claim my fears of all this not working or my OWN failure, but I am trying to stay positive and keep working hard now to adopt good healthy lifestyle changes!! -
Pre-Op Phase - weak and dizzy - any suggestions?
tcrehm posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am finishing up my pre-op phase with surgery coming up on Tues Sep 22. Since being on the liquid pre-op diet the last week and a half I have been dizzy and weak most of the time. I am getting daily - 3 shakes of 30 grams Protein apiece (Premier Protein shakes) - 64 oz or more of liquid a day - 16 oz of clear broth - sugar free Popsicles - Herbal tea with Stevia - Bariatric fusion Vitamins (X3) - Vitamin B12 - Calcium - Biotin - recently added a glass of skim milk I have found that drinking peppermint tea helps with the hunger feelings, but I have stopped driving my car for now because I am concerned that I will pass out from the dizziness and weakness I am experiencing. I'm concerned about how I will do after surgery because I need to get back to driving for work and running errands for the family and not seeing at least for a while that my diet will be much different for a few weeks. My NUT said to increase my calories some so I added a glass of milk each day over the last few days. That helped a couple of days but now am back to weak and dizzy quite often during the day. Any ideas on what to do to make this go away? -
@ To surfer girls point, if you choose a Bariatric center of excellence, your chances are better than your new insurance will cover you down the road. But I would definately get started because there is likely going to be a supervised diet of some sort that insurance or the center itself requires. Good luck to you!

Waiting After Seminar and Consultation!
mdhomeschool replied to slynclark's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My insurance took a good month and a half to clear - mostly through mix-ups ( I had to keep calling my insurance provider and the bariatric office to keep the ball rolling). So while I was really hoping for a July surgery, I ended up with an August 18 surgery. Just realize it's not always quick! -
My surgeon required attendance to his seminar. It was rather informative, and there was a woman who spoke of her personal experience and it brought many people in the room to tears, myself included. I don't know of anyone who has had WLS so it was good to see. Attending seminars are usually free, and for me it was so helpful. The Bariatric office I am going thru has 2 surgeons, and I could see the differences in personality and it helped me choose the one who best suited my needs.

katwmn63 replied to toomanypounds's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yes... i am going to Dr. Vafi Shayani out of Saint Anthony's in Rockford ( he has 2 other locations as well). His clinic is wonderful and his staff is top notch! His assistant, Kim, really know the in and outs of the insurance requirements, and she is on the ball with returning calls and emails. His center also has the accreditation of Center of Excellence. :unsure:Hello all, I am very new at this. Doctor and I suggested bariatric surgery at my appt on Thursday. I've had friend who have done the lap band surgery and am intrigued. However, I know nothing and don't know where to start. I know basically nothing about this. Where do I start? I am eager and willing. I need to know what lap band is, time lost from work, how much loss will there be etc..... Any other sites would be helpful also. I want to know what I can before I go the bariatric doctor. Any help would be appreciated.

Number One Muti Vitamin
GBLady41 replied to RGraham87's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Almost any multivitamin would be fine pre-op but post-op you need specific vitamins, so I would look up bariatric multivitamins to make sure that your are getting the nutrients your post-op body will need. -

did anyone else not do too great on preop diet?
RickM replied to phished10's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your doctor may be disappointed, but you shouldn't be. If you are eating the right things, that's the majority of the battle - I had been eating the right things, too - I had evolved into a good healthy diet over the years before surgery, but couldn't get the volume down enough to lose any more, which is why I needed the surgery. It's good to start the good postop habits early and experiment with new compliant foods - what Protein drinks do you like best, etc. Some docs claim that they use the preop diet to shrink or prepare the liver for the procedure. My doc is a liver specialist outside of his bariatrics and he doesn't have a specific preop diet, so that should say something about the validity of that claim. I gained a bit in the month before surgery from the serial last suppers (we won't be able to eat here for a while, and as long as we're out for this preop medical appointment, why not...) and it hasn't effected my weight loss postop - I'm 2/3 to goal weight in three months. Don't add any more stress to your life at an already stressful time (and hopefully your doctor won't, either) Good luck with it all, -
I feel awful, is this normal?
FangDoc replied to Ridgies Rock's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was definitely a little tired on my pre-op diet; I think an extremely low calorie diet tends to do that, at least until the body gets used to it. However, the nausea is worrisome. Call your surgeon, bariatric nurse, clinical weight loss coordinator, nutritionist, WHOEVER, and tell them about it. My concern is that you might be reacting to the Protein powder, particularly if it's whey-based. Good luck! -
Give a call to Center of Weight Management and Bariatric. Great group of people there and it's a center of excellence. http://www.lowellgeneral.org/go/services-and-specialties/center-for-weight-management-and-bariatric-surgery

Will I qualify for lap band with a bmi of 31? And does medicare cover cost?
JeweI replied to katokil's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have medicare. Even though they covered me they didn't actually pay for much of the surgery. I payed mostly out of pocket. I believe your BMI needs to be atleast 35. Here is an article on it. Medicare Issues Bariatric Surgery Policy Guidelines — DOC NEWS -
I had my pre-op appointment following my 3 hour nutrition class in the morning. I couldn't eat or drink all day because of a couple of tests they had to take, so I don't remember everything...just being extremely hungry and thirsty. From what I can remember, they took a few viles of blood, I met with a hospital nurse and she did an ekg and talked about weight loss surgery in general (she was certified in something related to bariatric surgery and had actually had it herself 8 years prior), I had my barium drink and they took pictures of my insides, I registered with the hospital for my stay, and I think that was all (except since I was self pay I also met with the finance lady to go over some things). It was a pretty smooth process and they kept just passing me off from person to person although there was sometimes a slight delay between things. I wish you a smooth easy day!

What to buy beforehand??
wannaBLean replied to lk77's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have the Bariatric Advantage brand Protein shakes now- bought from their website, also you will need Multivitamins and skim fat free milk makes the shakes easier to tolerate. Otherwise it's real thin and hard to drink all the time. I prefer the Isopure zero carb Protein Shakes though and intend to go back on those afterwards. It's better as far as carbs and fat and stuff goes and I liked the taste a tad better. Bout the same price too. I also recommend V-8 and soy milk. Oh and I have this cookbook which I used and pureed the food during my mushy stage: Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery, Patt Levine M.D., Book - Barnes & Noble I thought the recipes were tasty though I've only made a few of them so far- and they tell you how much to puree for the lapband or for gastric bypass etc. I have a Blender Bottle and use it every day! It's so easy to make the protein shakes with and is easy to just rinse out real quick afterwards and let drip dry- rather than a blender or spoon to stir with. Otherwise, nothing else comes to mind. Congratulations by the way!
