first post-- protein question
littlemomma0831 replied to SKrae430's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I second Atkins Lift. They're delicious. I couldn't stomach Premier Protein or GENEPRO (it's not completely flavorless, you can still taste something being added). ---------- Surgery date- 11/8/16 HW- 249 SW- 235 CW-198 -
How many calories do you eat per day?
Missy161 replied to dreamingsmall's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Coffee with half and half and real sugar in the morning (my splurge ) Protein shake around 9am Small lunch like a couple of cheese sticks or a laughing cow wedge a little fruit at lunch- I also like chicken salad with a couple of crackers ( rice or pita crackers) Maybe a protein bar late afternoon. Dinner I might have some grilled chicken, zucchinni noodles, cheese or tuna. I don't plan well enough so sometimes I'll just grab another laughing cow wedge and roll it up in turkey. Yesterday I wanted another cup of coffee so I added genepro to it- 30 grams of protein in my coffee. I also had a Powerade zero. I do r hold a great routine so I at least try to keep cheese sticks, protein shakes and cottage cheese around for a quick meal. I'm not a great example of how to do it, but it's working for me. Eggface on Pinterest is an awesome vsg diet resource! Mich W Hw 223, SW 217 CW 179.8 GW 135 -
July 2020 Surgery anyone?
Double_Me replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was so surprised when my nutritionist was saying that people tend to struggle with eggs post-op. But after having tried a scrambled egg and regretting it, its entirely true. I can sill barely believe it! I miss them so much! I'm doing well, I've been trying a variety of foods to make sure my stomach is used to everything and I haven't developed any allergies or serious intolerances. I had cod poached in milk, leeks, and saffron. A 2 oz MD crabcake with no breadcrumb/cracker filler. Prosciutto actually went down very well- I peeled off most of the fat, and didn't swallow any sinuey parts. Beans have been well tolerated too, I've had both refried beans and white bean dip. Tomorrow I plan on blending some smoked salmon with ricotta and maybe a little light cream cheese. Also going to roast a sweet potato, blend it with some genepro, milk, egg, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove and baking once more... going for something like a pie filling. I'm eating better now than I was before surgery! My calories are coming in at around 400-600 per day. I've been able to stay at 1 protein shake a day and get another 30 g from food, where I'll eat 4 2 oz portions in the morning, noon, dinner, and snack. I've lost no weight for the past 3 days, but including my pre-op diet the timing is spot on for the dreaded week three stall. Hoping it will be over soon and I'll see a decent loss! -
Choosing a Protein
Navigating the Wilderness replied to faithmel's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I am getting to the point where I truly believe if you asked 100 different surgeons, you would have 100 different answers to this question. Well, maybe more depending on whom you asked in the office! So, to answer your question, I would always say the safest route is to follow what the Surgeon recommended. I know this is kind of a cop out, but if you want to be in compliance, then I seriously would consider using what they tell you to use. I was directed to use only Unjury, or Isopure. I used both, they were fine, my guess is any other legit protein maker would have been fine as well. Legit being defined as one that has at least 20g of protein per serving, and is not filled with sugar. Also excluding Genepro here, I hate to even list that product in a post, but just in case someone tells you to use it. Search the forum if you want to know why. As for the vitamins, this is even more important than the protein when it comes to following your surgeon's guidelines. Obviously you will need higher doses of vitamins than non-bariatric users to make up for what you are missing. If you want to use a different brand than what your doctor recommends, just do a nutritional label check and make sure they have the same amounts of vitamins. Of course, not all vitamins are created equal either, even if they say they have the same Daily Value percentage. So, once again, especially in the beginning, stick to what the surgeon recommended. Congrats on your first steps in this journey. I wish you many successes in the future!! -
Let's talk NOT meeting protein goals
lalame replied to Tessa1988's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sleeved 9/6/16. I know you don't want to hear about shakes. I stopped drinking them after surgery. They made me nauseous. I did find a recommendation on this app about 7-8 weeks post surgery that suggested genepro. I have been using it ever since. One small scoop is 30 grams of protein. Doesn't taste like anything. Don't put your nose in it. Made me nauseous to smell it in the beginning. Now i don't notice the smell. I mixed it in yogurt, soup, and now in my milk for my decaf latte just to jump start my protein intake. Good luck. -
What did you wish you knew pre-surgery/sleeve life?
Autumn Fury replied to Ashley Wright's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The things I wish I knew before surgery are: 1. Get the Vitamin Patches. 2. Avoid the Protein shakes as much as possible - try to get as much protein from real food as you can.Your taste buds will change. 3. Fluids are a constant struggle, have a variety of options available. 4. An ice pack was my best friend while recovering. 5. You will have several incisions and they do take time to heal. 6. It's difficult to lay on your right side. (I'm 6 weeks out & still can't lay on my right side). 7. unjury Protein powder taste great in chicken Soup. 8. GENEPRO is a good protein powder but be careful what you mix it with. 9. Any local support groups you can attend are very beneficial. 10. Every day it will get a little bit better. Hallejillyah - My GENEPRO arrived yesterday but I haven't had the chance to try to yet. Is it legit tasteless and dissolves well? My pre-op diet was the same as yours! My surgery is at 1100(est) time today! I think I'm ready! -

@@PorkChopExpress You're my new favorite person!! The tea with GENEPRO was fantastic...yay!! -
Cinnamon roll... Interesting. I got the Equate high protein (it's very similar to Premier) in caramel the other day, and I was very surprised at how good it was. Like, I'd love to put it into coffee (I don't drink coffee anymore because I cannot drink it without SO much sugar and creamer... It was really an unhealthy amount). Dunno how I'll react to them AFTER the surgery, though. I'll have to look into that clear protein. Though I may just use Genepro in some water with Mio in it...

I use Genepro. Yes, I know about the lawsuit. It was what my nnut recommended, and it seems to work great for me, so I am going with it That seems like a lot, but everyone is different. At this stage, my nut is recommending 1/4c food per meal. Yay! Hopefully the gas and heartburn has eased some for you Welcome!! I feel pretty great myself, now, considering my really rough start! Congrats on the loss!

August post op sleevers: Check in
Thinkingthinner1109 replied to motherof5's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Could I ask how much protein you get from the cereal and milk? I am trying to find some different things. I was sleeved the same day as you, I still drink the protein drinks to be sure I get enough protein because I cannot eat enough food to get all my protein in. I don't mind them too much. I mix Unjury vanilla, Genepro, fat free milk and sugar free banana cream pudding mix and ice and I get 59 grams of protein before 7 am makes the rest of my day less stressful worrying about getting in my protein. -
Unflavored protein powder
tera1982 replied to glitterpockets's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was asking about Genepro on here. Is there any taste? Does it mix well? I have a few varieties of syntrax powders and they just don't seem to get smooth, no matter what temp I use. Right now I am using premier protein ready to drink shakes. I don't do so well with protein and need/want something that completely disappears(or as much as possible). Thanks! -
Protein intake, struggling
ShelterDog64 replied to vsgbeauty13's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I and a number of people in my support group from all over the US use GENEPRO and have done very well with it. I've lost 83 lbs and am 29 from goal. And individual MDs rarely do 'studies'; they may look at their patients observationally and see trends but using Genepro vs some other brand of Protein is not preventing people from losing weight. Not following an intelligent eating plan is what keeps people from losing weight. -
Protein intake, struggling

I will have my surgery on the 13th of February but, I have found a protein mix called genepro. 1 tablespoon is 30grams and I mix it with my coffe. My sister had her surgery in October and she started using this as well and mixes it with an ounce of Gatorade and takes like a shot .. hope this helps you.. Protein Drink witch one
SassyNanny replied to sharoninidaho's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use Premium Protein from Costco and I really like the chocolate and the vanilla. The strawberry cream is too sweet for me but my friend loves that flavor. I also got Genepro unflavored protein powder that I use in sf pudding and blended soups. I'm getting plenty of protein easily. I have been blending frozen fruit in my Premium Protein and it is delicious and my tummy doesn't mind. -
Sami got her GENEPRO samples, she made a shake this AM, and loved it!!! No taste, no smell and does not change the consistency of what you add it to. You can also sprinkle it on your food! 1 Tbs, is 30 grams of protein!!! You have to google the site that sells it!! Genepro.com Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

May 2023 surgeries
travelgal replied to WVJess2Less's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm ten days out from VSG with a esophageal hernia repair. I did need to take Tylenol for pain for seven days, and I'm happy to be pain free now. Luckily, I was able to take 50oz of fluid from the beginning - and I am now up to 75+oz. Honestly, I was more worried about that than food restriction, because I have always loved drinking water. All of the sweet protein shakes and waters have put me off sweet tastes and I have been experimenting. I've been adding GenePro unflavored protein powder to everything (there is one with 22 grams of Protein for a small scoop). I'm in the pureed stage with meat now (I know - but my University's lead surgeon allows on his diet plan) and I have enjoyed cream of malanga soup with one very soft scrambled egg and today I made a kind of blended chicken tzatziki soup with cucumber, cottage cheese, chicken and dill, plus a little water. I'm so happy! 4oz had 21gr of protein. I also love spices, but I'm taking it slow. I have a couple of finishing salts with truffle or lemon/fennel. Just the lightest sprinkle makes a big difference to my tastebuds. And FlavorGod's Gingerbread cookie topper mini-sprinkles gives a zing to all the protein yogurt I've been eating. I hope this helps some people looking for ideas to get away from the sweet tastes. I've also switch off premade protein shakes and back to Iconic brand protein powders. They taste be mild and not sweet, so once you get to the 8oz of liquids I recommend it. I have been getting out to do errands before I go back to work next week, however I haven't really started walking with exercise in mind. It's time to start today. I'm nine pounds down and very happy I made the decision for WLS. 59 since starting this journey with the Bariatric Center in November. I'm a foodie, and I was worried about not being able to enjoy foods in the future and I'm incredibly happy I am on the way to good health. On that note, I was taken off a blood pressure med and a statin by my GP yesterday. THAT was a win! For any of you who are having more challenges after your surgery. Hang in there! My heart is with you because I know that could be any of us. -
I used 3 different ones. Still the same. The taste is off for me. I used lean 25 from GNC, Nectar, and a special K one. They leave me bloated, extremely nauseated, and in pain. I'm going to try this genepro I read in here and see if that helps. It's supposed to be 30g protein in 15g serving and can be dissolved in cold and hot foods, liquids, is unflavored. I'm really hoping it works out for me.

I'm going in June 8th. These Protein shakes are milk based and the protein powders don't dissolve well in Water. What do I do? I've heard GENEPRO dissolves better in water and it's tasteless. HELP???? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
This is probably going to be it for me today unless I have a protein drink later. Got some stomach flu situation happening... Coffee, fairlife milk and genepro with sugar free toriani: brown sugar cinnamon flavor Stir fry with chicken, veggies, garlic, ginger, peanut sauce

Every six hours would be a lot! I have not tried isopure, but if it is a clear, maybe you could mix it with some crystal light. I just started using genepro and it is nice to be able to mix it in my crystal light..that way I am getting protein and liquid at the same time:)
