If I have to rush to eat, I don't. You can't. You have to be able to have time to sit and wait in between bites. I usually can't do fast food either (burger buns, soft wraps....they just don't work usually). I do find I eat the same things, not every day but there are things I know seem to be okay so I know they won't cause me too much grief if I'm paying attention. That's the thing....even after being banded for 1.5 years if I don't pay attention & take my time, I pay for it. That being said, my doctor said that no food would be off limits (however this isn't really true because at least while still in the weight loss stage, there are certain foods I just can't eat like doughy breads). However, I'd rather lose this weight finally than eat at McDonald's!

I have not faltered in my intake...no fast foods, no junk, etc...being good, but not seeing results these days....was banded March 12, 09 and have dropped 46, but that was all prior to first fill...got any ideas? -
Hello, I gave birth to twins on October 2nd and had gained almost 90 lbs during my pregnancy. While I have lost almost 40 lbs I still have 50 to go and am getting very anxious to get to a decent weight. I'm working with a trainer for exercise who is very much against getting the lapband because essentially she believes my problem with my weight stalling is not eating enough rather than not eating alot. My question are these: How successful have people been with the lapband and losing about 50 lbs? Has anyone had their weight loss stalled because of not eating enough? How fast can someone expect to lose 50lbs? Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

I think u are doing great, this isnt a fast weight loss solution and this should have been explained to you prior to surgery. Weight loss till u get to your sweet spot/full restriction with fills, will depend on your willpower mainly and wise choices with food and exercise ... the average weight loss is normally 1 to 2 lbs per week, u seem to be bang on target. This time post op up to 6 weeks is for healing and getting used to the new eating regime so dont be too impatient u seem to be doing fine as u are

Running or walking after Gastric Sleeve
FocusOnMeNow replied to Biloxigirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you go the same distance you should be able to burn the same calories. But one can go a farther distance and burn more calories in a shorter amount of time running. As you lose weight you may need to actually run in order to acheive the same heart rate. You should be able to check and see what your heart rate is on a treadmill or elliptical at 4mph that is considered running speed. How fast are you currently walking 3.5mph or more and 4mph is the next step. That all being said running is rougher on the joints. But the endorphins are awesome:-) Good luck! -
Introduction - Planning to be Sleeved
LanaMae replied to CANTwaitTObeTHIN's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My process went faster than normal. I attended orientation March 1 and had surgery April 23. During those few weeks, I squeezed in the mental health appointments (2), NUT appointment, and pre-op diet. It helped that I was already at "goal weight" when I met with the surgeon! I used that info to get in earlier to see MH and NUT. They all worked to get me in FAST! -
Finally went to siminar yesterday.

I know it's a helper all im trying to say is that basically do you ALWAYS have to eat healthy foods. I mean I can do with healthy foods, but sometimes ANYBODY want's a nice meal I don't care how much you diet. Like I said I am willing to work with the band im not saying that I will just grub on fries, fried foods, burgers, and fast food all day everyday. Im just saying all the overweight people here we all have tried diets, pills etc and it didn't work so I know nobody here could just never have a treat is what im saying. Like for me I was thinking of doing weight watchers with my band. Also im not a big sweet eater either. I mean people here say the band is a helper not a mircle i know this. -
Getting excited and nervous! Surgery approved and scheduled for September 4th with the possibility they may move it to the 3rd due to a cancellation. All my pre-op lab work and testing is done and without any concerns. Same for my psych eval, barium swallow, chest x-ray, EKG, and EGD. Did all my pre-op nutrition appointments (I was fast tracked, so there weren't as many as most of you had). Did the pre-op group class where they explained my pre-op diet and what to expect at the hospital and post op. Started my bariatric vitamins last week. Purchased any food/supplies that I think I might need for the first couple weeks post op (my husband even told me to get him a new bigger TV so I can have a TV in my room the first couple days lol... and he got a 65" screen out of it lol). Today I did my final pre-op weigh in and doctor visit. Saw another doc first (teaching hospital), then my real doc. Signed my surgery consent. Too my surprise, the doc also told me that it doesn't matter how much weight I lose now, I am totally approved for surgery (before I had to be careful I didn't put myself under a certain weight and disqualify myself). YAY! I also asked him about how much time I can take off work (I have 14 weeks of sick time saved up and a supportive employer- not that I actually want 14 weeks off, just didn't take all my sick time over the many years I worked there). He said a minimum of 2 weeks but up to 8 since I do have a fairly physical job. YAY! I could probably get away with going back early, but why push myself when I have the time and support? I would rather heal, adjust to my new diet(s) over the next month or so, and slowly build a new fitness routine before going back to the craziness that is work. Not sure how many weeks I will actually take off, but good to know I have options. And then finally, I went to a pre-op anesthesia appointment. Answered all of their questions and signed their consent. So... all that is left is to call and confirm the time of my surgery the afternoon before! And how did I celebrate? I got my last meal of my favorite Indian food. Yum! And my husband is TRYING to be supportive of all of this, but he really doesn't want me to have what he considers to be elective surgery. I understand where he is coming from, especially since every one of his surgeries has had some sort of complications. But my surgeries have all been routine and without complication. And I really need to improve my health and this seems to be the only way to get me there.

I went today for my first fill. I have the 14 cc band and my doc put 3 cc's in it. I lost 11 pounds since October 8th, for a grand total of 33 pounds since August 16th (that was the last time I was weighed). Even in bandster hell I managed to loose weight!! I'm definitely feeling the restriction. I'm sipping on a can of slim fast and boy does it feel tight in there. I'm having trouble burping again, which happened after the surgery. I was told when I start eating again (48 hours of liquids and then 48 hours of mushy/pureeds), that I should take a bite, chew it 15 times, swallow, put my fork or spoon down, count to 50 and then do it again. I honestly didn't even feel it when she put the needle in! She had me do somewhat of a crunch, I guess to make the port stick up.

Looks like all the years I spent overweight has done real damage to my body. I am 27 years old with a possible herniated disc. My back is hurting me pretty good and has for quite a long time (on and off). I finally went to a specialist today and after an x-ray he told me I needed and MRI for sure. Of course they refuse to perform one until Dr. Powell says it's okay. I guess I am kinda blah about this because I had surgery to prevent these types of problems. I just wish I had insurance and a chance to have the band 10 years ago before I got upto almost 300lbs and carried it around for so long. All I can do now is know that yeah, I abused my body and move on to try to get my back better. I was just hoping it was from losing weight so fast and my body was out of alignment. :cry

Been there....still there...Banded May 4th and still experiencing gas pains I would suggest WALKING WALKING WALKING and Gas X tablets that are fast dissolving. they do have new strips too. I was not good and pulled the muscle my port is in, so I've been down for a week. It hurts. Good luck and keep walking it really does work!

Vines, I already saw that site. Thank you so much. Funny, they say the Calcium channel blockers don't do much good, but both my docs think it will. In certainly don't want to go on the anti-depressents they describe; they make you gain weight! Time will tell. You are right, Sue. However, I did lose about 50-60 lbs. before it manifested. I think it was on its way anyhow, because when I was filled under fluoro in Mexico it was noticed that my esoph. did move faster than most (the barium moved down fast), but at that time much less than what tests show now. Funny, the local barium swallows I took when this first sharting happening showed nothing, and that radiologist certainly didn't pick up on anything. They did my swallow lying down, which I thought was very strange. When I did the swallow at a different site as part of the upper GI series most recently, I stood up for the swallow & then lay down for the rest of the x-rays. That radiologist said it was quite noticable & he also diagnosed reflux, as did the doc who did the endo, of which I have absolutely no symptoms (I did have it pre-banding so I know what it feels like). In any event, I am taking nexium as well. Personally, I think that stress was the biggest contributing factor. I actually felt my esoph/stomach clench up when I walked into my husband's hospital room for the 1st time back in August. That's when all this started. Maybe if I lived on Valium, I'd be fine. Non-functional, but fine.

Sleeved Monday October 20
mbrinmn replied to Sinnamon36's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It really does get better. I know quite a few people have mentioned more extreme nausea and an extra night in the hospital. From what I can remember, 3 sips of G2, chicken broth, and Jello seems like a huge meal to me. For the first week, I had to drink broth throughout the day because I could only manage to get about 3 or 4 sips down at once, but by week two, I was doing fine and switched to purees (mostly pre packaged organic baby food). That went well and I upgraded to mashed regular foods...black bean burger with cheese, cheese omelet, I even had Perkins southern chicken and biscuits platter (without the biscuits) with scrambled eggs. That lasted me 5 meals. Bought a little hand operated blender and took it everywhere with me for 2 or 3 weeks. Now I'm eight weeks out as of today and feeling great. Can eat anything I want, but don't. I don't crave anything either, which is really nice. You're only on day 2.5 after MAJOR surgery. You just had a portion of a vital organ removed. Everyone handles surgery and the sleeve differently. Just stick to what your doctor prescribes as your food protocol and you'll be amazed at how fast you feel like you never even had surgery. Good luck! -
Banded for 7 months and now too much restriction
Mimilou2004 replied to karebare714's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I really think you are either a tad too full or you haven't adjusted to restriction yet and need to adjust your bite's size downward and chew a little more. Being overfilled is miserable and ultimately unhealthy, even with fast weightloss as a quick pay off. Best wishes. Mimi -
Ok..... NEW date.... June 4th!! Ok that was a fast 7 days gone!

call your doc and ask if you can eat for peter's sake... my doc moved me on to normal foods after two weeks. i was able to drink all i wanted, and i would stop eating after twenty minutes of mushies, but i never got full, and still have not backed up. today, for lunch, i ate a grilled hamburger patty...probably 4 oz cooked, and a spoon full of turnip greens. The i ate some sugar free pudding, and still could have eaten more. I have absolutely NO NO NO restriction. Sounds like you may be in the same boat with me. I am 3 weeks post op now. my doc let me eat at two weeks, he just reminded me to CHEW chew CHEW and STOP when I start to feel fullness/tightness/backing up/etc...but i really have not had any of that(except for once when I ate too fast, dern that first bite). good luck!! (gosh, gotta love wheetsin, but man, i would love to hate her...50 lbs in a month? who does that!!!! {winks at wheetsin!! Congrats sister!})

The holy grail of the scale
cheryl2586 replied to cheryl2586's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know everyone thinks I had weight loss surgery and it is going to go fast but I am here to tell you for the most part it will not. It took me three years to lose all my weight. I went for a whole year with no weight loss and talk about disappointed. But I kept doing what I was doing. I boosted my weight loss with a couple of days of no carbs just Protein and the scale moved again. I then only added vegetables as carbs and no fruit until I got to goal. If you think it is easier to maintain I am hear to tell you once again it is not. The scale can creep back up on you very fast. It is imperative for good results not to get hemmed up in a corner and think why did I do this. It's not working for me. The only way in this journey to succeed is to change your attitude towards everything and become a positive bandster. Disappointment should no longer be in your vocabulary. Being sad should only be part of your life if you lose someone you love not because of weight loss. If you want to be successful you have to want what you are doing badly. That no matter what the scale says you will still plug along and keep on keeping on. I gained 100 pounds over a 20 year period. Be happy that you are getting healthy. -
I am just starting the process for the sleeve surgery. It has been recommended to me by my Dr. I am around 400 lbs +/-. I have no idea because I don't have a scales that goes that high. So far I am healthy other than I can not walk very much without getting winded or my back hurting. So when I go grocery shopping or whatever I have to lean on a cart to keep my back from hurting. Obviously, I don't shop much especially if it entails a lot of walking. I do not exercise either so I am pretty weak. I have my first seminar and Dr. appt on Jan. 13th. I have the support from everyone in my family with the exception of my husband. So far he is refusing to go to the seminar with me or to even be receptive to the idea of me having the surgery. In 40 years of being very happily married I have never gone against his wishes. I wonder if anyone else has met with this problem and how you handled it? I am not sure I am strong enough to go against him and get the surgery without his support. I had a hysterectomy about 4 1/2 years ago and they almost lost me on the table and I know that is what he is thinking now so I understand his situation. But if I don't do something fast about my weight I could die from a heart attack too. Anyway, if anyone has had this problem please let me know how you handled it.

No wonder you are confused! The best person to listen to at this stage is your surgeon as he knows what is necessary for healing. Your diet seems to be progressing far quicker than most peoples. The standard is usually 2 weeks liquids, 2 weeks mushies, 2 weeks soft and then finally progressing to normal foods at 6 weeks. Watch what you eat carefully, make sure you are not getting any discomfort and if you do have problems slow down and go back to the previous food stage for a while. Advancing the diet too fast postop can lead to problems.

Scott your an inspiration! Congratulations on standing up against all the blows you have been dealt in life. A word of advice it is to plan ahead to avoid the fast food urge. I always have some chicken breasts individually wrapped in my freezer for quick defrost of frozen hamburgers which are very filling for me and so easy to make! I also have a power bar between meals to help curb the hunger and helps to avoid over eating at the next meal. Also as you get more restriction that might help. But it looks like you don't need too much advice you are on your way!

So I went on vacation to Europe for a month. I know, you don't feel sorry for me! There was a lot of sausage, bread, and beer to be had! I did not have any problems with getting stuck...at first. Two weeks into my trip, I fell off a horse. OW ow ow ow ow! I did a few things wrong after that: 1) I took Aleve because I knew I was going to hurt like hell later, and 2) Later, my hosts forced me to drink the Polish medicine, which is normally vodka but they thought I needed something stronger so it was cognac, and 3) I proceeded to eat a normal sausage-y dinner. It was not long before I was stuck and sliming. I've never been stuck before, only had an uncomfortable feeling when I eat too fast or too big a bite. The sliming eventually led to vomiting, and there were streaks of blood in it. Oh how scared I was! I was in a foreign country, vomiting blood, and I just knew that if I went to the hospital, they wouldn't know what to do with me. So I only told my husband, who was freaked out but agreed to stay quiet and keep an eye on me. I sipped Water for the rest of the evening, then just ate soft stuff for 24 hours. I felt fine the next day...well, my stomach felt fine. My body was extremely sore! I had to be more careful with food after that, I seemed to feel tight/stuck more easily. I visited my bariatric doctor when I got home, who checked my band with the x-ray and everything looked great. I ate basically whatever I wanted for a month and gained a pound. Not bad! We walked a LOT, and I was not the person everyone else had to wait for, as in past trips. 7 months of exercise allowed me to be the person in front for a change! So other than the horse fiasco, I had a really great experience.

question from a newbie!?!?
Kat817 replied to youcandoit!'s topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
When you really stop to think about how small the pouch is that you will be filling, you realize you need to pack a lot of nutrition in a small space. So while we don't have to diet per se, we do need to attempt to eat a healthy variety of nutrition in little amounts of food. So since as has been said, we have lots of fats to spare----eliminating the biggest majority of them is easiest!!! Plus the carbs are generally softer foods. So they do not stay with us for as long, so we get hungry sooner. Eating lean protein, allows us to feel full for hours on end with just a small amount. Some people have seriously dieted---either low carb, or simple calorie counting---and exercised faithfully--and they have dropped their weight FAST!!!! Personally I go for all things in moderation, and my weight is going slower---but it is still going! It is recommended to eat protein first, fiber second, and starches and sweets last. Is it required to eat that way? It wasn't by my Dr. Welcome to LBT---nice to have you here! Kat -
