    7 days post op issues

Everyone is different. Follow your plan and you will do great! I can eat drink decently too. Never had a problem getting my fluids or protein in. Depending on what the food is, sometimes I do fill up fast but otherwise I can usually eat a serving without a problem. I just follow my plan and go with the flow, seems to be working great for me. PS: You are still early out and your stomach is still healing so the nerves aren't completely healed and not getting the hint. You will start to feel the restrictions when you get to solid foods.

    Minimal Weight Loss

I lost 16 lbs the first *month* and started at almost 400 lbs - so you are doing fine! I think a lot of people's expectations come from shows like "My 600 lb Life", but you have to keep in mind those people have starting weights of 600-900 lbs - so they are MUCH heavier than the average WLS patient. And starting weight is a big factor in how fast the weight is going to come off (or at least at first). The closer you are to a normal BMI, the slower it goes, unfortunately...(and at a starting weight of 250 - you're much closer to a normal BMI than I was - let alone a contestant on "My 600 lb Life"!) anyway, hang in there. If you follow your program to a "T", the weight will come off. Your level of compliance is a MUCH greater indicator of your ultimate success than your rate of weight loss is.

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Regular texture food stage starts today, but I will stick with fish since I made 2 filets that will be like 3 meals lol. I'm allowed to go up an oz of food if I need to and can handle but I found my happy spot. I fly out of the country tomorrow, and have packed enough protein for a week, and will get yogurt to snack on. Had my 1st primary doc appt on Friday, blood pressure was in the normal range but still need to continue meds until she sees is stable after a few visits, lost over 20lbs since my las visit one week preop, my cholesterol went from 232 to 168 and everything else was in the normal range, even my fasting sugar was 79, when usually is in the 90s. She even checked my incisions to see how they were doing, and she will see me in 3 months to see about the bp and for my labs.

    Relationships after bypass

So sorry if I sound harsh here but this is setting my alarm bells ringing. You need to have a talk with your hubby fast. Controlling behaviour is very scary and does not come from a good place. He is very frightened he will loose you, its his problem and yours to deal with.
  7. Curious if anyone else has experienced something like this. I’m about a month out from surgery and I’m having a decent amount of nausea and food aversions. It feels VERY similar to when I was pregnant and in the first trimester. I know hormones get weird post surgery and am wondering if it can cause these types symptoms. I don’t believe it’s any of the other causes of nausea because I have no other symptoms. No sweating or anxiety with dumping. No vomiting or heaviness that go with a stricture. No foamies or similar from eating too fast/too much. I have let my doctor know and they said to take more omeprazole, which has helped some. The food aversion may be somewhat to my developed intolerances but not sure.

    Eating slow

Eating fast is my main issue. Idk if mine stems from my old food addiction but I tend to have a problem making my meals last more than 15mins. I think I just get too excited to eat, it doesn't cause me to overeat but I do think it's part of my mental process. Maybe yours has to do with that too? There may be something we both have to address mentally with our relationship with food.

    Eating slow

i am also a slow eater, regardless what setting I am in. I've conditioned myself i guess to eat slowly because if i eat to fast my fullness will kick in unexpectedly and i would be at best uncomfortable, at worst pain. so i try to avoid that as much as possible. the times i do eat "fast" (which is probably regular pace for "regular" people), is when I am particularly hungry, and yep i almost always pay for it. now in terms of snacking, i am probably one of those people who basically snack all day. I don't really have set meals, i kinda just pick at "meals" over several hours, or just a whole bunch of mini (micro?)-meals, cuz i do get hungry since don't really eat much in one sitting. At the end of the day though, i am still more or less at the calorie level needed to maintain my weight right now, so its working for ME. is your snacking causing you to eat more calories over all?

    Eating slow

I tend to eat on the fast side but I think snacking is more associated with (unless real hunger) eating out of boredom, distraction, emotional eating or those under psychological distress or stress.
  11. It may not be, but please don't ignore the rest of what I mentioned. You need to get your RMR tested or you can't really know how much you should be eating. You also need to find out your current percentage of body fat, start tracking it, and stop guessing how much you should weigh based strictly on what a scale is telling you. % body fat will be a much better way to measure your health. Finally, start strength training. The first 2 recommendations are tools to better understand where you're at today and where you need to get to, but strength training is likely the "fix" for your issues. I didn't mention it before, but you may be a good candidate for intermittent fasting. There are plenty of resources online so I won't go into details here, but it's worth a try.
  12. I have been snacking alot more lately. It seems like I am much more hungry now. I have been eating faster lately. I noticed I eat slower when I am out with friends. Do you think its possible that my snacking is related to eating too fast?

    November 2022 surgery support!

I can't even conceive of eating any meat. My dietician and the reading said that my tastes might change... Pureed beans and legumes have made up the bulk of my diet and I've been craving kale salads (very Californian) and swiss chard and cooked greens. Basically, the very description of how my African-American Texas grandmother cooked and ate all of her long life. Fried chicken was a treat for the older generations and she thought fast food and "sugar water" was disgusting. My Russian mother turned into a veggie-lovin' hippie but the secret ingredient to all of our Cultural dishes seemed to be SOUR CREAM! Obviously, I've been thinking about how intrinsic food is to identity. I suspect it is to many of us; especially during the holidays. Having VSG has almost made the holiday foods more special as an observer than a mindless gobbler (almost!). Does anyone else have holiday foods or special cultural dishes with stories?

    Noobie Questions

Gas pain after surgery is common. Some experience it, while others do not. My experience: I didn't experience gas with my RNY. Pain was overall on the low end. A bad UTI hurts more. My stomach felt sore for awhile, like I worked out a bit too much. Nothing major. No nausea or any bad side effects. I had asked for nausea meds before hand since I am prone to nausea. I was concerned about one of my incisions but it turned out to be normal healing. It didn't hurt, but it felt like there was a big ball underneath it. Fast forward almost a year and a half later, concerning post-op, no problem with excess gas or any bowel problems other than slight constipation that fiber or miralax can't correct. I always sleep with an incline wedge. Sleeping after surgery was normal. I think the incline helped a lot. Some like using recliners but unfortunately, I don't own one.
  15. Back in August 2012 I had a RNY surgery. I had done about a year of work to get to that point. A month or so before the surgery I discovered my wife at the time was cheating on me. I confronted her about this and she denied it but after some discussion we agreed to work on the relationship. Fast forward to the day of the surgery. She accompanied me to it that morning, I went back and the procedure was completed. I was taken to my room and was groggy from the anesthesia. She decided at that moment, while I was groggy and not clear headed to tell me she wanted a divorce. Needless to say this was hard. I will be honest and say that I did not handle things well and I started to slowly slip back into bad habits. I didn't follow up with the doctor and just overall did poorly. I have, however, kept to around 400lbs, and my biggest was 520lbs. I had recently done a diet program through a clinic, HMR, and I was down to about 352lbs before starting to slip and gain again. I am at currently 392lbs as of this past Monday. I completely regret not taking advantage of the RNY now. I realize stress and circumstances piled against me but it is a huge regret that follows me. I came across this site yesterday as I want to resume some form of eating plan. HMR is unfortunately closing and I need to figure out something that is a bit restrictive. I saw the pouch reset and think it might work for me. My insurance, Anthem BCBS, says on in the plan documents that Revision surgery is not covered. My options, I think, are doing the pouch reset but I am worried I have stretched my stomach out and that would be futile. Am I wrong on the stomach being stretched out? What can I do from here? Any suggestions?

    When to stop...

eating too much will cause you some pain. Its best to portion out your meals. Like this is what i do. and its best to eat slowly, chew well. you will find out how much you can actually eat. If you eat too fast your stomach will fill up quickly and you will feel that fullness pain. I am a person who hates to eat slow because food gets cold. So i try to cook smaller portions and then eat a little more later on.

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Was running low on my protein shake, which the only one I have had post-surgery is premier chocolate and I do not even like chocolate but find it good. I reordered the caramel which I found good before and the chocolate peanut butter which is delicious like a butter finger or resees cup. I will be taking a few for my holiday vacation. Last night I had a slice of ham too fast and just sat on the back of my throat, granted yesterday was a day I was eating everything fast so that did not help. Today is a new day and I'm making sure I take smaller bites and chew chew chew. My weight has fluctuated a bit, but it has moved I think is the hormones (dry skin anyone) and the fact I took some stool softener too.

  20. 27 lbs down in five weeks is better than I did in that time. If you stick to your plan, the weight will come off, whether fast or slow.
  21. Hi everyone, This is sort of déjà vu for me! In 2009 I was on these forums a lot as I prepared for my lap band surgery. I lost 100 pounds in 3 years with lap band. In 2017 I tried to have revision surgery to the sleeve but my BMI was 35 and I only had mild sleep apnea and my insurance would not approve it. Fast forward to almost 2023 and my BMI is now 40. I have a consultation on Wednesday as I now have new insurance (Anthem BCBS) and I'm hoping to have better luck with approval. I am leaning more toward gastric bypass this time. I know a few people who have had the sleeve and a few people who have had bypass and it seems like the people with bypass have had the results that I'm looking for. Also, I don't want another 10 plus years to pass and be back here again. I'm really hoping that all this can be accomplished sometime in the Spring as I have 2 young boys and we spend the majority of our summer camping and I would really like to have all this done before the camping season begins. I'm not sure how feasible that is but I guess I will find out on Wednesday at my appointment! Anyone else out there in a similar position or starting the journey just now? how did surgery save you money?

When we go out to eat, my meal tends to last me 3 days because I can't eat as much as I used to. So I get more for my money that way. Also, I don't eat fast food at all, I'm not buying junk food from the store, and I eat way less in general, so the food I DO buy lasts longer.
  24. before surgery i was buying fast food 3 times a day... sometimes more. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. constant snacks, gas station food ect... Now i just go grocery shopping and eat less and dont ever go to fast food places anymore.

    Water intake

I found this to be true for me, as well. One other thing that has helped a lot is finding the "right" drink. As far as cool drinks go, I was struggling really badly for a while, but found that drinking iced tea actually helped a lot. I tried plain water and water flavorings, but just could not get them down fast enough. For some reason, the tea (I drink decaf), really helped me. YMMV, but it wouldn't hurt to try other beverages and see if something else is easier on your tummy?
