No band, no revision, no problem...(not really)
general_antiope posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So I was denied twice to have my sleeve surgery after my band was removed in June due to complications/slippage. My surgeon was on the phone with the insurance surgeon and apparently they were arguing - I already hit the lifetime limit of one surgery 13 years ago, and technically had TWO surgeries (removal) that were paid for and they wouldn't revise me. Band out. 25 lbs immediately gained. Wow, WOW it felt SO GOOD to eat and not have things stuck. it was like a physical addiction to chew and swallow without puking. But, holy crap I'm gaining. I've slowed down finally, am walking every day but not losing. Still a battle. My sleep apnea is back, so I'm about to go get evaluated for a CPAP. I'm up 2 sizes, where I never thought I would be again. I'm up 60 lbs from my lowest with the band. Not really a success story anymore. I'm hanging on for dear life because there is one more chance for the sleeve. I spoke to my husband and in November I'm going to enroll in my own healthcare through my employer. Praying to god nothing bad happens...I have a new local doctor who I've already consulted with, and his surgical coordinator, and they're getting me in the first week of November as a new patient so that I will satisfy the three months of medical supervision, and that as of Jan 1 we can schedule surgery for Feb or March as long as I've lost weight. I'm struggling now, but practicing by logging every day, eating slow when I can remember. Every week I'm getting better at avoiding triggers, being consistent, but my late day eating ruins the entire day of doing well. My goal is to get my sh!t under control - better control - so that the habits are there and the sleeve just accelerates it. I am at the mercy of my hunger some days, it is so frustrating. But I am having "good" days here and there, changes in attitude and understanding. Just needed to talk. I feel like November is forever away and January doesn't exist...love reading all of your stories!! Keeping me going. -
I'm in hospital right now, I had a sleeve to bypass revision this morning due to reflux since my sleeve. Nobody wants surgery, it's understandable you're nervous! It's good to find out what's going on tho. I didn't realise that my reflux was a big deal, initially it was controlled well with standard meds off the shelf. I assumed it was just something I needed to live with. I mentioned to my surgeon at my 12 month post-sleeve appointment and he started to talk about the need for surgical intervention. Worth remembering that in the US they tend to be overly cautious about interventions like this! I had tests done to check how much damage had been done by the GERD, turned out it was quite a bit. I discussed it with my hubs over a few months, I really didn't want to lose even more weight when I was alreasy worrying I was too skinny in places. What sealed it for us was finding out that long term GERD can lead to esophageal cancer, and long term use of omeprazole etc can lower your calcium, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. I hope you have a good doctor and can get some good answers to set your mind st ease. Much as we've all had similar experiences, everyone reacts differently and has different issues and bodies, so only you can make the decision, so .and an informed one! Sorry about the rambling... Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, Fidelis Medicaid the process?
Maryvsg87 replied to Maryvsg87's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ask yourself why did you want the GBS vs VSG and then what made you choose VSG and then why now you want GBS again if whatever you answer makes sense to you gen go with that. I always say go with your gut feeling and ask if you can change surgery cause then you might then later on go get a revision and that's another surgery. -
U.K. potential sleevers! Stay in the U.K
Bishbosh replied to Bishbosh's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes. The NHS is amazing. Endoscopy first to try and stretch the narrowing and then revision to bypass in the next couple of weeks. This is what happens when you try to cut costs [emoji853] -

I'm so sorry. Good luck, I can't imagine having to have 2 surgeries so close together. Will this revision be covered under NHS, without a major wait? -

I did have an endoscopy but it wasn't spotted?!! I have to have revision to bypass I think. I'm 15 weeks post op so it's all settled and healed now. Everything was ok in the beginning but I've had terrible reflux. The reflux was getting worse, so I came to the hospital and that's when they found all these problems. -
I am thankful for you all- but I need help

I know I have posted many MANY times about my struggles with regain. I have attempted resets and restarts multiple times but fail every time. Today I am ready. I just have had enough. Absolutely enough. I am SICK AND TIRED. I am angry at myself for having lost all of my will power. I did SO great post op and then things changed. My personal life went into chaos-it's like I totally forgot that I'm a bariatric patient. Today I realized that there is NO MAGIC PILL for regain. I've tried it all, but right in this minute I realized that going back to basics and getting my butt into a gym are the key. There is no secret. I promise I won't ever post again asking WHAT to do. I may post asking how to tweak something or for a bit of guidance, but I KNOW WHAT TO DO... so today, today is my day. Today I start back with dense proteins, tracking my water, giving up the pop permanently, cutting all the carbs, treats, snacking, etc. I WILL add shakes too, because I work nights and part of my problem has been eating through the day, then eating all night at work just to stay awake. If i'm going to have to do SOMETHING to stay awake, i'd rather it be a shake than pizza or junk. Please. PLEASE pray for me, cheer me on, drop me a smile or a piece of support. Whatever you have, please help me along. I have little access to a surgeon (I had to leave my original surgeon due to a move, and my new surgeon only wants to talk revision). I attended a new support group and liked them, they only meet once a month. I'm walking in there again in a couple weeks and going to ask for email/phone/text contact info of the members so I can stay in touch with them. Ok. I'm ready. Seriously, truly ready. Here we go. Day 1. -
No weight loss weeks 5-9 post op
jbaker5d replied to Milindia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine has been very slow. For 4-6 weeks my weight seemed to be bouncing around. Then it started leveling out and I've been dropping but VERY slowly. I've only lost 30 lbs since my revision surgery on 4/14/17. But I'm glad at least it's moving. Don't give up. It will happen. -
Yes, I have issue with junk food and crazing. You will be sorry you are giving in so early. I was so stupid that I put back on about 55 lbs and had a revision surgery. (And yes, I still have issues!) Some of the bariatric food/vitamin places sell versions of healthier chips that aren't bad. And the raw carrots option was a good suggestion. Good luck.

Any regrets or things you wish you would have known beforehand??
GBLady41 replied to Lauren_90's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I didn't have a revision but I did have the MGB. My recovery took a few weeks to get my energy back. I was walking a couple of hours after surgery. About a couple of weeks after surgery, I didn't have much energy and my nutritionist told me to start with a little of a protein shake a few days early. It worked. I got my energy back and haven't had any issues since. -
Well after 7 years, I got my band removed. At first everything was fine! Lost over 80 lbs, got myself to the gym regularly. As soon as the band was "overfilled" that was the beginning of the end. For about 5 years, I was getting it filled, then unfilled. I could barely keep any food down. Eventually I had enough fluid removed so that I could finally eat, and then the weight started to creep back up. I got the band removed and am relieved. But..... Is it naive of me to think I can NOW lose weight, now that the band has been removed? I'm in the process of getting approved for a revision to the sleeve, but a part of me doesn't want ANY type of weight loss surgery. Can weight loss be achieved, now that there's no restriction? Has it been done? I keep going back & forth with this.

We haven't had any experience with GO LIGHT or the DR. But my hubby had his gallbladder removed during his failed revision from Lap Band to a RNY. He didn't have any problems. But now with his Sleeve he gets the BACK DOOR TROTS constantly. I'm sure the gallbladder being removed has something to do with that because almost every woman in my family have had theirs removed and it is the same for us all. But...the SLEEVE also has the same effect if he eats to much fat or to much sugar. Are you getting your gallbladder taken out? Having gallbladder trouble is real common with WL peple. Good Luck!!

Hmm....Drs might not be able to fix the hernia so I'm looking at a revision to a bypass.

No weight loss weeks 5-9 post op
Introversion replied to Milindia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Revision patients may lose weight a at a slightly slower rate than those who have virgin first-time sleeves. However, bariatric surgeons don't always inform prospective patients of this potential reality to avoid discouraging them. Slower weight loss often happens to revision patients because they've already experienced the metabolic shock of a previous bariatric surgical procedure. Revisions are notorious for not giving the same "bang" as the original surgery. It sounds like you are doing everything right, so use the tape measure every couple weeks and don't weigh as often, and just stay the course. As you get more energy, the gym will be your friend. -
I had my band to sleeve revision on June 22nd. I lost 23 pounds as of July19th, but for 4 weeks now I have lost and gained the same 4 pounds. I walk more than I did before and I am down 45 pounds since June 1 when I started the preppy diet. I upped my calories to about 900-1100 per day from 500 or so a few weeks ago hoping it would help. I eat 65ish grams of protein 30-50 carbs and drink lots of water. I know it just under 3 months I am still down 45 pounds, but a month with no weight lost is concerning me. I feel like I didn't pay nearly $20,000 to lose 45 pounds, especially when I paid $13,000 for my band 5 years ago. My insurance won't cover anything, labs, nutritionalist or anything considered related to my surgery, so I have only been twice to the nutritionalist. But I feel like I am following the guidelines. Anyone else have an experience like This? How can o start losing again?

Revision from sleeve to Rny bc of gerd
Mhy12784 replied to Maria Castillo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Im curious what were the insurance requirements for you to switch from a sleeve to bypass because of severe GERD ? Presumably did you need to meet the full requirements for a bypass again (even though you already had a sleeve) or are they different for a complication related revision? I have pretty bad GERD but wanted a sleeve, now im having my doubts and leaning towards the bypass. Im concerned I wouldnt qualify for a bypass after having a sleeve though, which makes me lean towards just doing the bypass -
Previous Hiatal Hernia Surgery Changing Everything
SleeveDreamer replied to Deleted Account's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just had a sleeve revision to RNY in June. I had a sleeve in 2011 due to a repair I had to have because 2/3 of my stomach was up through y diaphragm between my lungs, headed for my heart! Definitly a hiatial hernia! However, it did not cure my acid which got completely out of control and the only way I could get rid of it was to have the RNY. I didn't have either surgery for weight loss. When he went in to do the bypass, he discovered an area on my esophagus that was so thin due to acid damage it was about to rupture, so he fixed that before he did the bypass part. I have never heard that you could not have a sleeve when you have a hiatial hernia. In fact that happens a lot, so I don't understand why he told you that. They fix the hiatial hernia first then do the sleeve. However, I have not had any regrets from the RNY. Never had any pain or nausea and now I am on all foods and everything is going great. The restriction on the RNY is greater than the sleeve, obviously, since the pouch is so much smaller than you leftover stomach with the sleeve. If you have severe acid, not sure cuz you didn't say, the RNY is the best choice. Don't be scared of the RNY. IMO the recovery is not any different than the sleeve. Too many people are scared of the bypass for some reason. -
Previous Hiatal Hernia Surgery Changing Everything

My surgeon told me that I could not have a sleeve due to having hiatal hernia surgery a few years ago. I need to have the bypass. Along with the bypass, he must revise the previous HH surgery. Has anyone had this done? Was it considered more risky? Were there more complications? I'm more anxious than I already was just having the sleeve. -
August Mexico surgeries?
KartMan replied to BDutchess's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Had my VSG revision (from LapBand) scheduled for tomorrow (8/15/17) in Mexico. Got down to do the pre-op testing. All was going well, vitals were all good, I lost the prescribed weight, but then... Apparently either I missed the question or it wasn't recorded properly in the pre-screen that I have had Hepatitis B in the past. Mind you, my HepB was 30 years ago and was acute (meaning no ongoing symptoms). Also, I had LapBand 8 years ago and there were absolutely no liver issues then and I have numerous liver panels through the years with no ongoing liver function issues. However, out of an abundance of caution - they want to run a fresh liver function blood test and the results take 10 days to process. Assuming it's good, they will reschedule. This means my surgery is postponed a minimum of two weeks and possibly longer depending on their availability. The real kick in the teeth is I have to stay on the pre-op diet the whole time. -
They approve bypass revision but unless there is a complication with the band won't take it out. Insurance companies are stupid some times. They paid 47000 for mine. Double what private pay pays. Talk about abuse of the system. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm almost 5 years out from revision of Rny to ds.. anything high in fat or sugar gets me. I've been at goal a few years but I bounce around 5/7 lbs. when I hit that high side I usually eat buttered popcorn or a few cookies. Gets things moving for me. You are still recovering though.. dr advice might be wise.
