Don't you think that's the mindset of most people about WLS? I mean before they get it, of course. Afterwards reality sets in and you learn that the difficulty of changing your eating habits is still there. She has made the same assumption that many people do. I can't say that I blame her. Frankly I empathize with her about not being able to keep her weight off. I'm no huge Oprah fan, but I'm always surprised at how vehemently negative some people feel about her. Maybe she just is one of those people who is able to capture the emotions of others really well and that partially accounts for her enormous success. She may have it wrong about WLS, but she sure has been able to get a whole lot of things right as far as her business is concerned.

i had a low BMI of 36.6 and i was self pay. i wasn't always overweight. it wasn't until i was in my mid-20's that i started struggling. i have to be honest with you... this journey is HARD. had i known then what i know now... i might not have gone thru with it but let me explain. i did all the research but i thought i'd be okay with everything. i only needed to lose 75 pounds to get me to a normal BMI, so how hard could it be, right? they don't tell you about the struggles between the brain and the stomach. my stomach (and my band) tell me to stop eating after a few bites but my brain tells me to keep eating because it tastes SO good. if you listen to your band, you WILL lose weight but if you listen to your brain, you'll throw up. a lot. you have to learn to love your body and really respect the band. if i listen to my band i'm totally fine with my eating. it's when i listen to my brain that i run into problems. you also have to be aware that some foods that you LOVE might be foods you'll never eat again. i can no longer eat pizza or hamburger or bread of any kind. if i do, i throw up. have you tried everything possible to lose weight naturally? do you feel like this is your only option? think long and hard....

At week 3 it is probably real hunger. It took me 8-10 weeks before my band started to do what I was expecting it to do. Week 3 I was on mushies. Different Soups, chili. scrambled eggs, quiche, mashed sweet potatoes. and on and on. At this point it is not about loosing weight or controlling hunger. It is all about fully healing before they can get down to real business.

Will be happy to be a slow loser

While I understand why each doc does what they do (usually anyway), I totally agree with your program. If my doc said 'you can never eat XXX again' I would totally be dying to have XXX. Healthy foods in moderation that create a healthy relationship with food while still allowing you to have a normal healthy life really would seem to be the goal to me. Good luck!!! After the fluids and mush weeks, my dietician isn't very strict or prescriptive as to what we should eat. We have guidelines of course which I'll stick to. But their thinking is that we should eat as normal a diet as possible so I won't have x amount of grams of this and y amount of that. Just an instruction to make sure I eat my protien first. The pre op diet is the same, he wants us to low fat eat food sticking to around 1000 cals, rather than liquids and again it's non prescriptive. I lost 9 stone (126lb) last year, quite quickly and put 6 stone (84lb) of it back on this year. I've always been able to lose weight but never keep it off, hence choosing the bypass over the sleeve. I'm happy to lose the weight after the surgery slowly this time, trying to eat as I will eat for my future rather than eating as if I'm on another diet - that way, the losing phase my be longer but I'll be learning how I'll be eating for the rest of my life and (hopefully, please God, touch wood), learning how to maintain :-) -

Maintenance 18 mos. out – kicking sugar cravings and reducing hunger
CowgirlJane replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I completely understand your post and what I would add is that it seems like it is an ongoing balancing act, adjustment. I relied so heavily on intense exercise for awhile, and then when I couldn't do that anymore - had to readjust. My capacity for food is much higher than it used to be - so need to adjust for that too. anyway, we all have our own stories, own experineces but maybe the unexpected is that our own story changes quite a bit over time too! This is why there is no one size fits all answer - especially to maintenance challenges. I have known for quite awhile that excessive carbs make me hungry. Not everyone has that experience and we all need to listen to our bodies, listen to others ideas and then figure out what applies to ourselves... right now... not yesterday or tomorrow, but what is needed now. I have a friend who eats sandwiches all the time, she is about 40# overweight and on an annual bases loses that weight via starvation diet, then regains it. she blames it on no willpower, junk food etc - well... maybe... but eating bread 3 meals a day (when not on starvation diet) might be part of the hunger trigger! -
Hang in there! It does get better. Until you reach restriction, I would concentrate on eating the right foods- high protien, low carb, low fat. Your portions may be larger than they will be when you have restriction, but at least you shouldn't gain. I know it's hard, but you'll get through what is known as "bandster hell". It took me 3 fills to feel restriction. Good luck! One more thing, if your not excersising I would start. It works wonders for weight loss. The benefits are just too numerous to pass up. Start out slow and gradually increase your duration/intensity. You can do this!

too many "bad foods"
BlackBerryJuice replied to jenn20's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think you're stalling because you are eating high-fat items. Unless you are having 10 sticks of cheese a day, it shouldn't be a problem. Your body needs fat to function - I actually take fish oil on days that my fat intake through food falls under 15 grams. I'm at 2.5 weeks, but am slowly introducing "normal foods." Some things I eat other than the things you mentioned are non-fibery fruits like melon and watermelon; cottage cheese; various juices; yogurt and various milk products like kefir; soft sashimi (pretty much anything other than squid and octopus is soft); boiled chicken went down great today. I'm at 800-900 calories a day and have lots of energy - already started swimming and find myself having the urge to go for walks even if I already worked out earlier in the day. I know some other folks here eat like 500-600 calories, but this amount seems to work well for me, both in terms of weight lost and energy levels. -
Hi from Charlotte, NC -- Considering LB surgery
kittyskid posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi All, I'm seriously considering the LapBand surgery. I called one place so far and they have a Medicare waiting list (about 1 yr). I am 47 yrs old with diabetes, sleep apnea, degenerative disc disease, GERD, etc. At 5'7" and 260#, I am in almost constant pain. I've been on several courses of steroids over the years for my back/spinal fusion. All they seemed to do was to add a lot of weight. I guess since Medicare's reimbursement is very low, the docs only do a certain # each month. I'm going to try the hospital route. What are some things I need to consider when making my decision to have this surgery? Thanks & God Bless! ~~~Kat -

What my doctor says about stalls...
McButterpants posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was lucky enough to have two doctor's appointments this week - my three month follow up with my local bariatric doctor and my PCP. I lamented to my bariatric doctor about my stall. How I haven't lost anything in the past 18 days. I was kind of whiney about it. She just looked at me like I grew a 2nd head. She said, "You're going great. You've lost a total of 50 pounds. What was your expectation?" I got to thinking about that - really, what number was going to make me happy? If it was 53 pounds would I automatically to over the happy side? What about 63 pounds, is that the magic number? She pointed out all the good things going on - lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, my ability to walk seemingly forever pain-free, my increased energy level, etc. All good stuff, right? So why am I so hard on myself about the number on the scale. She asked how often I'm weighing - I'm back to weighing every day. She told me to stop that, but I weighed again today. The best thing she said about my weight was this - "If you graph your weight loss, the line won't be linear, it's going to be more of stair step." And you know, she's right. I graphed my weight loss to date and it looks like stair steps. This morning I went to my PCP whom I haven't seen since late-October, about 2 weeks before surgery. Her jaw dropped when she saw me. She cannot believe the difference in my appearance. Then we started going over the labs and she was amazed. She actually said "You are glowing! You look happy. Your eyes are clear and bright. The transformation is amazing." Sometimes we get so hard on ourselves because we're not losing a the rate in which we think we should. "I'm a slow loser!" "So-and-so is losing so much faster than me!" We need to STOP! This is marathon, not a sprint. I didn't get to 256 pounds overnight, I'm certainly not going to lose it overnight. Sometimes it's good to step back and look at things from a different angle. -
Hello again all. I have been extremely frustrated with my weight loss. I had my surgery on Feb 5 2014 so I am a little over 2 months po. The first month from the time the Dr recorded my weight until he seen me 1 month po I dropped 34 lbs. I was ecstatic. When I went in for my 2 month check I only lost 7 lbs taking me down to 226. That was on April 7. Since then I have dropped 8 lbs in the last 2 weeks. I work out at least 5 days a week doing 45 mins on my elliptical and then lifting 10 lb weights on top of it to get my arms in shape hoping some of the skin will stretch back. I eat healthy getting 60 grams of protein daily and plenty of water though sometimes I may be a few grams short on my protein and a little short on fluids. Why am I not losing more weight then I am? It just doesn't make sense to me. My Dr was upset with my at my last visit for not dropping enough weight. I see so many people hitting the 100lb mark before a year and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I plan to start tomorrow walking 4 miles a day like I was before I got the elliptical a couple weeks ago on top of everything else I'm doing. Can someone please help me or guide me so I can increase my weight loss?

Maintenance 18 mos. out – kicking sugar cravings and reducing hunger
James Marusek replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Good! It sometimes seems like the surgeons office is focused primarily on the Weight Loss phase with very little guidance when you reach the Maintenance phase. So experimentation and learning from that experimentation is key. -
My dietitian said that a great result is to lose around 30% of your excess body weight in the first three months. So subtract your goal weight from your highest weight and work out 30% of that figure. However that's the bench mark for a fantastic result there will be a lot of variations of that some higher some lower and as long as you are losing its a good thing [emoji3] Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

Sounds better than me. 310 at start on Sept 13, now im 287. 23lbs in 8 weeks (2 months!). What a crock of **** this procedure is, for me at least! Ive been the same damn weight for the last 3 weeks, then 2 weeks prior, i was the same damn weight for 3 weeks. Only reason i lost weight was because straight outta surg (iv probably) and i got sick and couldnt eat another week. But being not sick, eating right, exercise ever single day...nothing. You have no idea how disappointed i am at this procedure in me. Its not like its been 10lbs a month either. Like i said, it was 10lbs loss in 1 week from sickness, 9lbs first week out...and thats it. Im so disgusted.

How much weight does the average person lose during the liver reduction diet?

If you have come to the point in your life where you feel that the surgery is needed vs. un-needed then why second guess yourself. Something has brought you to the point of " I need to loose this weight and can-not do it on my own for my overall healther". I never knew what it was to FEEL good and healthy until I got here because an unhealthy lifestyle was all i knew. I would never go back and never change my decision. It was worth it ...

How long for this stall?
JinaLeah replied to shakur154's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I was sleeved 3/6. For the last week I have lost and gained the same 2lbs The doc told me today it was normal. That in the first couple of weeks you lose because you lose water and muscle. Then it will take your body a little bit to adjust. I know I weigh day and night lol. She said the same, weigh once a week. Keep up on your protein and water. It will happen At least it better -
Long way until surgery, post op diet without surgery for now?
snrussell09 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a few months at least until I'll be able to get the surgery so me and my Dad have gone to the psychologist, nutritionist, surgeon and the nurse a few times and we have learned about the post-op diet. I have samples for the shakes and Vitamins. Would it be okay for someone who hasn't had the sleeve to follow the post op diet? The shakes, vitamins and Protein guidelines along with the portion sizes? We figured we might as well give it a shot to drop some weight without the surgery before since we have to wait a few months regardless, right? I know there may be some needed adjustments but would doing this diet be ok or would the lack of solid foods and more Protein Shakes instead of regular meals? I guess I want to know if it's safe or not. I have the packets, foods list, portion sizes, vitamins, protein shakes. -
I'm Never hungry ?
BandedKitten replied to bluescooby14's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I guess I'm still swollen since I have no fill yet and I'm not hungry. I really can only eat about 2 tablespoons of creamed Soup and feel gentle pressure if I eat more. I am trying to get my Water in. I was banded on May 12th. I get my first fill in a month. I hope I don't die of hunger in a week or so when the swelling goes down! Will I be able to Bear it? I've heard of people who still lose significant weight before a fill. I've lost 10 lbs since Mother's Day but that included 1 day of Clear liquids and so far the rest have been "full" liquids---Soups, Protein shakes, etc. i just don't want the Hunger To come back. My hunger is like an Evil Monster that follows me around and haunts me all day long---it's been such a sweet dream to not be Starving the last week. It's so freaking awesome! Thanks to everyone who takes the time to post answers and comments--it's really generous and helpful! I haven't figured out the ticker thing yet. Here's my numbers: highest weight--in the Fall during testing ---205 Before liquid diet for 3 days ---------------------197 today (5 days past surgery) ---------------------187 I'm very short and 187 looks much bigger on me. I am very excited to be on this journey. i can feel this is the right path! yay. hugs to all, BandedKitten -
A. You are not "bad". B. You are human, that's why you did that. C. Remember how you feel and think about that next time you are tempted to make a bad choice. If we were perfect we would not all need weight loss surgery!! It exists because there is a whole sub-category of people who can't control what and how much they eat. I am also a volume eater and that's why I chose the band and it has been a wonderful thing so far for 6 months. Dont' give up, Learn and move on. And try really hard for the next few days until your surgery....your surgery will be easier on you and the surgeon if you have followed the pre-op diet!! Good luck!!

Should I postpone surgery??
SKCUNNINGHAM replied to ravenjeh's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
The following is what I would do in your situation. This is my opinion and in no way is meant to pass judgement on your situation. I would sit down with my husband and make out a budget for all of the things that are broken and need repaired, and an ongoing household budget assuming you get your foster son. Include a savings amount to build - rebuild your surgery fund. I personally would spend the money to get things fixed before I spent money on surgery if I was self-pay. I would talk to the foster agency to see what hoops you have to jump through to get approved and how long it is going to take before he can be living with you. I would make sure having surgery wouldn't impact your ability to foster (approval or feeling good enough to foster a child) I would talk to the surgeon and see if I could postpone surgery for a few (3-4) months - or until your surgery fund is built back-up. You could start / continue a sensible pre-op diet and get used to cooking for / having a child in the house prior to jumping into surgery. You could be losing weight while you get used to having a child, and re-building the fund. Sounds like you, your husband and your mom have big hearts. Best of luck to you. -
