    Woohooo!

The insurance company somehow got it in their head that I have severe liver disease (which I don't). I do have a mild case of fatty liver disease, which they specifically mention in their policy as not disqualifying someone from the procedure, so I think someone saw the words "liver disease" and automatically red-stamped it without looking any further. I think what annoyed me the most was that this was such a stupid screw up on their part. I almost think they knew it was a screw up, but denied it anyhow in the hopes that I wouldn't appeal it, and they wouldn't have to pay. I was nervous about the BMI thing also. I had actually counted how much weight I could lose to meet the 5% requirement, but still be above the BMI requirements. Was your BMI of 39 when you first saw the nutritionist, or after you have been on their diet for a while? My insurance/doctor started counting when I first saw them not at the end. Also, if you have any co-morbities, high blood pressure or diabetes for example, the BMI requirement was less, so you might want to check into that if your nervous.

Welcome. I too had my surgery with the Glasgows. Mine was on 7/26. I was alot heavier than you though. I started at 324 and now I'm 249 - down 75! I actually like the exercising part - though my exercise is all walking - and a little bit of eliptical. I bought an MP3 player - so I listen to great walking music and escape every time I walk. I don't want to think about how slow the weight loss would be without the exercising. I walk between 4 to 5 miles per day. Do you go to the support groups. If so, maybe I'll see you there. Good luck.

Just wanted to write and say....you are going to do good at this! God is going to take care of you and I pray He gives you a peace about the surgery. I know He will be with us all. I too have major depression and I have Bipolar. I am doing well on these meds and my psychiatrist said take them they night before surgery and I shouldn't have any complications. My psychiatrist first recommended this surgery as I have gained 120 lbs in 4 years due to psych meds and increased appetite. Trust in Him in all things! I am praying for us all.....
  5. Someone please explain this to me. If they expect someone to lose 65% of their excess weight. How do you figure this? At weigh in, I was 280. Today, a week and a half from surgery, I weigh 267. What is my excess body weight? I am 5' 11''.

    Excess weight loss %

Your excess body weight would be your current weight less your goal weight. So 65% would be 65% of the weight you want to lose. Here's mine: Starting weight: 421 Goal weight: 160 Excess weight: 261 261 x .65 = 169 So to lose 65% of my excess weight would be 169 pounds (btw, I've lost 191 pounds so I've lost 73% of my excess weight so far)

    Why? Why? Why?

I wanted to let you know I read your replies and have been thinking about them for days. I appreciate every last word. I'm still not sure that I really understand "why". Here's what I do know: I do hide behind my weight and it has been a kind of self-filled prophecy-- I now look as big as I've always felt. I was having a down day and couldn't get cheered up. I thought let's go get dinner from Baja Fresh and all of a sudden I was happy. I enjoyed driving to get it, eating it and the rest of the night went better. food made me HAPPY. Ugh!
  8. When I did my labs they discovered I had a UTI. I didn't even notice because I had been using the bathroom more because of the heat, and my desire to drink more Water in preparation for having the band....I was on antibiotics for ten days!! But, now my surgery is on Monday and I really think it may have come back!! I am definitely feeling SOMETHING. I had my appointment today where I signed all the papers and everything. At that appointment they did another exam, but no labs. I need to have the last labs done Friday. I asked about a UTI and she said if I had one again, they would give me a big dose of antibiotics... but I am afraid whatever it is will mess everything up. Has anyone had any last minute things that prevented the surgery? I am hoping this is pretty minor and will be ok. :confused2: The good news is I lost a lot of weight since my last visit! :crying:

    Back Issues

Congratulations on your weight loss! The meds I take have no NSAID's in them. I take opana, which is oxymorphone in the generic form. I googled it and it's fine. I have no side effects and do not feel weird when I take my pain meds. I will not take OxyContin ever again. I can't remember anything l, plus oxymorphone is a lot stronger. Best wishes! Dotty Cole

    exercise?

2 weeks post surgery I joined the gym and started elliptical (lol 1 - 2 min for a week and continued to increase time). I also biked for 30 minutes. I did machines low weights (no stomach excercises). (Doctor wasn't happy about that, just in case). I just got cleared for all excercise (6 wks post surgery). I am already up to 15 min on elliptical at a moderate setting and increased the setting on the bike. Starting to add more weight to my program. Because of the surgery I change my routine so I drop my son off at school and go to the gym workout then to work. so far so good!

    Getting Nervous Before Surgery

Hi sunshine, I dont know the calafornia doctors as I am in the uK, I just wanted to say dont be freaked by the forms, they have to cover every eventuality, when you get in there it is over before you know and the recovery is pretty easy really ( though the post-op diet is a b*tch!!!) Look forwards to seeing you dropping that weight hon! Nina x

I have had those stalls a lot along the way. It sounds like you are doing everything right. When the weight stops falling off try to remember that it's your body adjusting to everything. Keep measuring your inches, because when you are working out you may be replacing fat with muscle and muscle takes up less space...and looks much better so the scale might not be moving, but that doesn't mean you aren't getting smaller. I know that right now I weigh 170 and can fit a size 9-14... And the last time I weighed 170 I didn't work out at all...and I was in a size 14-16 then. Working out makes a lot of difference! Keep smiling! You will get there!
  14. I found out today that my family care doctor didn't keep record of our discussions about weight loss diet and exercise... On the bright side the man who needs the information to submit to my insurance said she can go back and document what we discussed on a form... Which is great... However... My family doctor has up and quit... No one knows where she is going or if she is even going to work anywhere else... So that means I may have to do 5 more months... I am sooo discouraged!

    High Protein Diet

Yeah, My Dr. has me on a High Protein. No Carb No Sugar Diet. Everyone on here know that No Carbs is impossible but that is just what he said my goal was. I eat a bunch of Meat. Mostly Chicken and Turkey. For being on the go you could always eat some processed Turkey or Ham slices. These aren't as good for you because they do contain some Carbs but most are less than 1 g a slice. There is also I think a Sliced Roast Beef that has No Carbs. I ate this alot. I have been on this diet for almost 2 months. Being a Male and over 400lbs the Dr is making me lose weight before the surgery.

Anyone lose the weight post baby

I am 20 weeks pregnant and 1.75 years out from the sleeve. I lost 130 pounds. At 5'11" I weight around 160. I am up to 183 as of today. That is 23 pounds weight gain in 21 weeks (21 on Wednesday). I have NO clue whether or not I am going to lose this weight, but my restriction might as well be a thing of the past. I can eat my FACE off! I am so hungry all the time! I am hoping that the hunger goes away after baby, but I don't know. I was in maintenance when I got pregnant...I wish I gotten pregnant while still losing, but hey. I am pregnant for the first time at 36! That is a miracle. I have gained weight all over and still can squeeze into my clothes from my thighs, but can not button anything in the tummy. Shirts are little snug in the arms but mostly in my tummy. I feel big, but I am not going to let it get me down. I am not working out which just is terrible. I can not function in this cold weather and I am waiting for the warm weather to hit so I can go walking. Did i mention I can eat? Like everything! So scary!
  17. Hi Forum, I am new to the site and wanted to share that I had my VSG surgery on June 4th. I selected Dr. Atkinson from Las Vegas Weight Control Center and had my surgery at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas, NV. From pre-op to 2 days post-op I am happy with the service I received from the LVWCC and Desert Springs Hospital. They were all very caring, informative and the post-op recovery was amazing. The nurses at Desert Springs (Tessie, Dena, Kim, Meghan) were great. My journey started several months ago after I was so disgusted with myself, nutrition and inconsistent weight loss results. I am a 38 year old male, who is 6'2 and pre-op was 325 lb. I have struggled my entire life with weight loss and obesity. I have tried everything from exercise (which helped) but it alone was not enough, Nutri System, Injections and in the end they all delivered failed results or inconsistent weight loss for me. As a result, I developed depression and struggled with other aspects of life as I felt I was being consumed by weight. Often times, friends family, etc would say "you look good", "you don't need surgery" and "you carry the weight well" This never helped and it only made me feel worse. Several months back, my partner suggested that I reconsider VSG because initially I was scared of the procedure. After weeks of consideration I took the steps to schedule my consult with LVWCC and Dr. Atkinson. He was calm, not pushy and answered all of my questions making me feel at ease. I had a bad experience with another local doctor who used the term "fillet me", which made me feel uncomfortable. I was a cash pay customer, so I didn't have the many insurance hurdles that are required. What I can tell you is that 2 days post-op I feel good, with only minor stomach pain. Thus far, I think the worst part about the entire experience was waking up from the anesthesia, it was tough for me. I stayed one night in the hospital and had hiccups and belching...even with a lot of walking. Day 2, hiccups, etc are gone except for minor wound pain but i have been able to keep liquids down no problem. As my journey continues I will post additional information. For those considering the surgery, don't be scared but remember to find a surgeon that you are comfortable with. That is very important and will give you peace of mind. Any questions, please feel free to notify me. Chris

    Need advice

I was banded a couple years ago, so I don't really recall how much I lost the first week. I think 14 lbs seems high. I think that would be the exception, not the rule. Try to follow doctors orders for diet and try not to focus on the scale. I understand why you want to, but the weight loss will come. I don't think you are doing anything wrong if you have lost 4 lbs in a week.

    Need advice

I don't know anyone personally that lost 14 lbs first week. I lost about 10 lbs the first 3 weeks and then not a lot until I started getting fills. The recommended weight loss is 1-2 lbs on average per week. Depending on if you exercise or not or how well you keep your Protein count up will make a difference. If you drop your calorie count too low and your protein is not up to as close to 70 grams a day, your weight loss will not be great because your body thinks it's starving. You also can't go by anyone else. This journey is different for every single person. Every fill amount is different, every sweet spot is different in what it takes to get there. My daughter has been banded before me. So I knew going in what I was in for but we've had different results...all good. Just remember, that four pounds is four pounds you didn't have the week before!!
  20. You may have hit a point of equilibrium where the amount of calories you take in equal the amount of calories you burn on a daily average. If you would like to lose more weight, ensure you are doing the basics: Don't drink Water 15 minutes prior, during or 45 minutes after eating Eat lean Proteins first, then good carbs Exercise - push yourself, don't just go through the motions. Your heart rate should be up there. Do you track on MyFitnessPal?

    Plateu

I had my procedure on October 4th. My pre-op weight was 284. It will be six months since my surgery and I am now 224. However, this last month it seems as though I only lost maybe 2 or 4 lbs. I joined a gym last week and went 4 times. I have started walking, I eat/drink as much protein as I can and dring plenty of water. I need a jump start to continue the weight loss. I wanted to have reached my goal of 180 lbs by May; but if the weight doesn't start to come off again, I am afraid that I won't make it. Can someone suggest something.

    Weight Loss Questions

Your current BMI is 38.2, healthy BMI is less than 24.9. A healthy weight would be- 145 (22 BMI) to 160 (24.5 BMI) It's easier to manage weight I find with my sleeve. I fluctuate 3-5 pounds. If I want down, cut sugar and carbs and I'm there. I think the' "carry my weight well"--- (thats what friends and family say to be nice, thats what we tell ourselves to deny we are fat) prevents a lot of WLS patients from looking objectively at what is healthy for them as the person. The numbers are a ROUGH guide. Pictures speak a 1000 words. YOU will know! Good Luck to you where ever you land. It's the journey not the arrival - you will encounter a lot of "your to thin" along the way.......... Friends and family are threatened very easily!
  24. I completely understand. I was what we call a bottomless barrel! Lol I could eat all day without feeling full, which is how I got up to my highest weight of 368 lbs =/ I can no longer eat anywhere near as much as I used to. 4 oz and I'm stuffed! There are days I forget to eat and have to drink a quick protein shake before bed to make sure I get in my protein for the day. The majority of the hunger hormone, gherlin, is cut out during surgery, making you feel less hunger instantly. I thought I was going to wake up hungry being that I hadn't eaten anything since the night before, and nope! I was drinking fluids because I had to, I didn't want to end up back in the hospital due to dehydration. Same goes with food! I even set alarms to remind me to eat, because I can go all day with my morning protein, but I wouldn't meet my requirements for the day. Sometimes I'm busy and silence my alarm, only to realize after I put the kids to bed, and I'm about to catch a show on TV that I forgot to eat. Both surgeries ate great, both will help you lose the weight you need to lose, but ultimately your success will be all on you. With either you can stretch your stomach beck out. The sleeve had only been around 5-6 years and I have heard of people gaining back 5-20 lbs, but haven't seen anyone gain back drastically. Do searcheson this site, it's very informative! There actually is a thread where someone asks if you gain back weight after the sleeve. Do the same search for bypass. This site helped me choose between the two surgeries also. There are many ups and downs for both, and it's not the easiest decision to make. Best of luck!
