1. I had my sleeve on July 18th, 2017. I am 9 weeks post op. My highest weight was 222, surgery weight day I weighed in at 210 and I am 190.8. I have been following the diet to a T. My sister who had the sleeve surgery done a few years ago eats cheetos, drinks soda and ate crap food and the weight just FELL off. She started at 225 and is now at 143. For me, yesterday I had a protein shake, two quest bars and a few bites of chicken salad. In total about 750-800 calories. My doctor told me to stay between 800 and 1000 calories but the weight is sloooooooooow to come off. I have read others that are eating between 300-400 calories a day and it's working but my doctor says NO to that as it throws your body into starvation mode. Can y'all tell me your input on this? Should I lower my calories anyway?? I'm feeling very discouraged today and really don't know if I should be eating more or less... Thanks for your help!

    Am I doing this right?

@macaleigh Well, I am no doctor nor am I a nutritionist so please make sure and get advice from them, professionally. However, I can tell you some things from my own personal experience and what I learned over the past year. First of all, from your stats, you have lost 20 lbs in 9 weeks. That IS significant, and completely par for the course. You are moving right along and 20 lbs in less than 2 months is a big loss! As far as your sister goes, without being disrespectful of others choices, I have to say that eating the crap food she is eating raises a lot of questions. Those choices are unhealthy no matter what you weigh. WLS should be a tool for not only weight loss but fitness and general health. Please do yourself a favor and do not look at her choices as a victory. Stick to your plan, a healthier lifestyle, for good. Everyone has their own journey, and I encourage your follow your high protein, healthy foods plan. The weight will continue to drop. In the long run, I can almost guarantee that you will look and feel better than anyone who maintains their diet regularly on junk foods. Best of luck to you and fear not...YOU are on the right path!
  3. I hope I'm doing this right. I've never done a forum before. I'm having my surgery done in Tijuana in 3 weeks and I'm wanting to get an idea of what to expect.

    2 week pre-op liquid diet!

Thank you! I'm really concerned though b/c my surgery day is Thursday!! I am just totally petrified that my surgery will be canceled b/c of this. I don't know what to do. I had been progressing right along on Week 1-- lost 9 lbs. Start 2nd week (more restrictive phase) and 3 days later BOOM, I'm up three lbs. I'm sure most of this is just my nerves talking b/c I'm worried about having the surgery (never had surgery before) Thanks for letting me vent!!!

    I have a question

Hi All, What do you mean by the term "full liquid"? I am a week post op and was on clear liquids for 2 days and according to my doctor's instructions I am now allowed only pureed food (I thin it with liquid) for the next 3 weeks. Is my pureed food the same as what you refer to as "full liquid"? Thanks.

    negative calories?

Don, what settings do you put into MFP? it recomends 80 gms of protein for me but i exercise alot and and i struggle to get 90 gms in and only with shakes. I know i am only 5 weeks out but i cannot imagine eating the kind of protein you are doing. we are the same height and headed for a very similar goal.

  8. So I am looking to have this surgery and going through all my glasses required by my surgeon and so forth it's a total of a 6 month program I'm on my 4 th month but my main concern is I'm 270 lbs and so afraid of having loose skin and my insurance not covering skin surgery I'm interested in hearing from people who have had this surgery around my weight and if they had a bunch of loose skin at my classes they say bc I'm young yet 36( not that young lol) that it will still have a lot of elasticity I have had three kids and just don't wanna have a bunch of loose skin and stretch marks already have the stretch marks. Anyone's stories or ways to prevent loose skin ect would be greatly appreciated Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Day 9

I joined a gym and hit the treadmill for 35 minutes tonight...even broke a sweat and everything! :clap2: Feel so much better now than I did when I got off work. Other improvements are that I have just about weaned off of caffeine entirely. I used to drink 4-5 cups of coffee and 1-2 glasses of iced tea/day. Even the smallest amount has been upsetting my tummy this week and I found that I really just preferred plain old water. Once I get completely off, I will try my best to stay off. It just makes me hungrier. Now that I am past most of the pain and almost past most of the fatigue, I am really, really getting pumped about all of this....the 10# drop doesn't hurt either. This is looking like it's going to be a very, very good year. DH came to me this evening after work, when I was VERY tired, and asked what he could do to support me. I said, "Unload the dishwasher." He laughed and later watched me unload it. 10 minutes after that he was out for his poker game. I went to the gym. :ermm I mean, why did he bother asking? I was serious when I said that....all I really needed at that moment was a little help around the house. Pretty disappointing. He did say that he can already tell in my face that I've lost weight. Cool. So can I. Activity 35 mins on treadmill @ 2.8 mph Nutrition Total: 869 Fat:55 496 58% Carbs:35 111 13% Fiber:7 0 0% Protein:60 241 28%

    moving on

Just curious but why did you have a picc line? I wasn't able to tolerate anything more than cottage cheese and yogurt at 4 weeks post sleeve. as for runny eggs, not a fav for me but I was able to eat them scrambled. Soft food stage:( Protein items) cottage cheese, yogurt, string cheese, refried Beans (water them down the first time or they will come back up) There are other soft foods but stick with the protein ones to start so you don't slow your weight loss with the carbs. I am 14 weeks out and still drink Protein shakes for my main protein consumption. I eat 1 meal a day that is usually a Soup with high protein count (since I can only eat 1/2 cup at that meal before I am full I add deli meat to increase the protein count) so I get protein and veggies at that meal. To add fruit to my diet, I mix the fruit into the protein shakes. Wish you the best and yes I still feel afraid to add foods to my diet.
  11. I am 3 weeks post op finding it very hard to get proteins & water in, water makes me gag I have tried crystal light tea etc still struggling any suggestions? I know it gets better just tired all the time & hate it!

    Staple question

I everyone I met my surgeon last week and he pretty much went over everything with me but I forgot to ask one question, What happens to the staples in your tummy is there a thread on here where I can get more info..thanks in advance
  13. PdxMan

    Staple question

Yup, they are a permanent part of you. Like JeanZ said, there are a ton of videos on YouTube demonstrating how this works. Basically, the stapler cuts the stomach tissue while putting tiny titanium staples along the portion of the stomach which remains AND the excised portion. The excised portion gets stapled, too, so no stomach contents get released into the body cavity. The stomach then begins the healing process creating scar tissue along the staple line. This is what is going to be the strongest, permanent structure. It takes about 6 weeks for this to form. This is the time frame where most people are at risk for a leak. (< 3%, as I understand the numbers) So, once the scar tissue forms over the staples, they remain. They are non-ferrous and will not set off medical or TSA equipment. I haven't heard a single radio station when I sit in front of the microwave, either.
  14. I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op and started feeling nausea and vomiting about 4-5 days ago. Has been constant if I try to eat anything (yogurt, Water, tea, etc) Not from over-eating since it usually occurs after one or two small sips or bites.

    The Process

I had to attend a virtual seminar, and then I had an appointment with the bariatric surgeon. When I went to that appointment, I also met with the patient navigator, who gave me a checklist of everything I had to complete prior to surgery. This was dictated partly by my surgeon and partly by my insurance, and it varies from one patient to the next (they had a long list of requirements and marked off the ones I needed to complete). The items I had to complete included: Three months of medically supervised weight loss with my PCP (one appointment per month for three months) Preliminary bloodwork (they let me do that with my PCP) My preliminary bloodwork showed thyroid issues, so I also had to go to an endocrinologist and get an ultrasound of my thyroid Upper GI (barium swallow test) Nutrition consultation with the bariatric nutritionist at my surgeon's practice (this is usually done in person, but I did it over the phone due to COVID) Psychological evaluation (one appointment in person, which included some tests and an interview, and a follow-up appointment by videoconference due to COVID) Group nutrition class (virtual class due to COVID) Group consent class (virtual class due to COVID) Pre-surgery appointment with the surgeon a week before surgery COVID test Pre-surgery testing (EKG and bloodwork), which is normally done prior to surgery day, but due to COVID, it was done on surgery day

    Super stressed

I feel like I have a lot of stress going on in my life right now too. I just keep telling my self that after surgery I have six weeks to focus on me. This is a good motivator for me to keep pushing through the rough patches.
  17. I am going to answer all though I have done extremely well and have had no bad times. The first thing that I really truly believe to be the core of the lap band is IT IS NOT A MIRACLE!! A person has to be willing to work at it with all their hearts. I read many many posts of people continually eating treats and candy, drinking pop, eating out daily.....This is not going to work!!!I think a lot of people go into the surgery thinking it is going to be piece of cake(no pun intended) and it is NOT. It is just as hard as any diet I have ever been on to eat the right nutritious things. The difference being, this time, there is a tool in place so that if I do have something that is not the best nutritionally, I don't beat myself up and give up. I start again and the tool is still there. I think people think that they are going to magically not ever be hungry again, and this is simply NOT true. You will get hungry again and then you have to do some work and eat healthy!!!! Exercising is the next important step in this puzzle of obesity. So many people hate it and so many people don't do it!!! People want to believe that they can simply never have to move their bodies and be fine. A person may very well be able to lose weight without exercising, but what about strength. We lose so much muscle when we lose weight if we are not doing strength training. We have taken a step to be healthy, why not just take the next step and start what you hate to do....exercise. Next I think that self hatred can be the worst thing that a "dieter" has to deal with. Self hatred of a body that is not losing fast enough, body image disorder and hanging skin. I think we all need to learn to love us for us. I am not saying I am there yet, but I am a lot closer than I was three months ago. These are just a few thoughts that poppes into my head as I read your post....I don't know if it is what you had in mind but hope it helps.
  18. My doc said something about the microwave drying things out when something similar happened to me with chicken last week. Of course, that didn't explain the hour and a half of NOPE that day.
  19. Sounds like you have hit a stall. From what I have read, it's very normal at this stage. Just remember to get enough protein and water... Your body will catch up and you'll start losing again!
  20. Good morning. If you have already had surgery, was there anything you did ahead of time (like during the 6 month weigh ins) to prepare yourself for the surgery? Or, is there something that you wish you had did that you think would have made things easier for you? I ask this because i am wondering, would it be good as I get closer to only have 1 meal per day and drink shakes the other 2 meals to make it easier for the 2 week pre-op liquid diet?

CANADIAN WOMEN Three men were sitting together bragging about how they had given their new wives duties. Garry had married a woman from the U.S. and bragged that he had told his wife she was going to do all the dishes and housecleaning that needed done at their house. He said that it took a couple of days but on the third day he came home to a clean house and the dishes were all washed and put away. Jimmy had married a woman from Australia. He bragged that he had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes, and the cooking. He told them that the first day he didn't see any results, but the next day it was better. By the third day, his house was clean, the dishes were done, and he had a huge dinner on the table. The third man had married a Canadian girl. He boasted that he told her that her duties were to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day, most of the swelling had gone and he could see a little out of his left eye. Enough to fix himself a bite to eat, load the dishwasher, see the dials on the washing machine and start the lawn mower.

Hi Donna D!

I am doing GRRRRReat! I have just started on the puree stage. I am happy to be having a few more choices on my menu... lol although it sure is odd to be eating muck! So far I think I am healing well I still have a few steri strips hanging on and I will just let them do their thing. They don't bother me and no one else sees them.

Dr Cobourn warned me that I may not lose any weight and could possibly gained during this phase so I am surprised to have lost 6 lbs since surgery. That doesn't mean that I won't gain though... I still have a few weeks to go before grown up food -=winks=- I think I am really looking forward to a peice of toast! I want some crunch!

How are you feeling now that you have had your first fill?

  23. Mine is Monday 7/28. I'm very excited and scared too. How about you?

    What is wrong with me?

I must admit I pushed that possibility to the back of my mind because I have no other symptoms of a possible slip, ie acid reflux or pain. I think I will ask for a complete unfill to give it a few weeks rest.
