    Age versus weight loss success?

i had my byoass at age 46 and lost 200 thengained back 100 with a strteched out pouch.am having revision surgery by a lapband at 59 anyboday share any of this in common plz?
  2. Hi I've had the lapband for two years now, after a year I have had nothing but problems with it I can no longer get fills because it makes me so nauseated and bad heartburn. I've lost 80 pounds and since about 8 months I've had no fluid in my band I've gained 10 pounds of that back so my doctor says it needs to come out so has any one have an approval from band to sleeve with Cigna? Plus I will have to wait 6 to 8 weeks to have the sleeve done because my doctor doesn't do the revision at the same time, any thoughts would be helpful.. thanks
  3. I am 2 years out from gastric sleeve surgery. 100lbs down. Original weight 383 and today 277-281. I have not overstretched my sleeve and I excercise 3-4 times a week. I can break the 277. All of my labs are great. Cholesterol, Glucose, Sodium, vitamins, blood counts. However, my high blood pressure has returned, I still have GERD and sleep apnea. I am considering a revision to a DS. I know that is a bit extreme, but my BMI is still above a 36. I am a little nervous, but more so because this surgery reroutes my anatomy. also, I don’t know what the recovery looks like for a DS patient that already had a previous sleeve. Any thoughts on all of this would be greatly appreciated.

    Conversion from band

Not sure if they cover a revision if you having nothing wrong with your band. I know my insurance only covers it if I have a complication (I do - a slip). Good luck!
  5. Alrighty, things got real today!!! I'm so excited to be on the sugery schedule! Things have gone very fast. I made the decision to go for this new life on January 1st. I was in the enteromedics study with the recharge device. This has recently been fda approved, its a great device and it worked well for me....until there was a glitch and the thing shut off. So technically, I am having a revision.
  6. Welcome! There is a forum for band to VSG revision about half way down the page and there are several people here!
  7. I think my subject line says it all!!! Today marks my one month band to sleeve revision. I could not feel better. I was 177.4 on surgery day and today I'm 162.2. Yippee!!!!!!! I have about 20 more pounds to go. I know the hard part is ahead but boy, do I feel awesome. For some reason the surgery has given me an extreme burst of energy- I haven't felt this good in years. I've been working my bees and just found out they are doing so well I had to add a top box today. Yey!!! So my lovely girls are growing, I'm getting smaller, it's spring in the South and life could not be better. Just wanted to share and wish everyone a great day and best of luck with their journey. Oh!!! I should add that this weekend I'm going on a overnight kayaking trip down the Peace River to look for fossils with my 12 year old daughter. I haven't slept in a tent in over 15 years... I must be crazy. So if you don't hear from me after Monday... I have fallen prey to a gator or exhaustion. I'm telling you, this surgery has made me (crazy) superwoman. I hope it lasts!!! 8. About 4 years ago I made what I thought was going to be the best decision and had gastric bypass surgery. Everything went great! At the time I was about 260 and within the first year lost close to 90 pounds. I was feeling healthy, fit and excited about life. Slowly over the next couple years life got back in the way. I fell back into old habits, I was snacking all the time, eating things I shouldn't and before I knew it I was back to 220. I felt like a failure. I was given this opportunity to get healthy and blew it. I wasn't feeling full easily and was back on the diet yo-yo that I had done for most of my adult life. Last week I had an endoscopic gastric revision. They were able to add a few stitches to shrink my pouch and the opening from my stomach to intestine so that I feel full longer. I feel great again. Today I started eating some soft food, in small amounts and am down 15 pounds. I've been given a second chance but am still so worried that those old habits will come back. Now is the easy stage where you don't feel hungry and are so limited on what you can eat, but what do I do when I'm fully recovered. How do you keep the weight off? How do you stay motivated knowing there are certain things you should just really never eat again? Any advice on truly changing lifestyles is greatly appropriated!!

    Desperate in Seattle

Statistically the weight comes off slower with a revision. It DOES come off, just not as quickly. And I've heard a lot of people who've done revisions saying they felt far more restriction with the sleeve verses bypass so I believe that's normal. I don't know why it's hard for you to lay on your left side or why you're still feeling weak. I'd most definitely call your surgeon and ask them for advice on what it could be and if it'll pass on it's own. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

    From Band To Sleeve?!

girlfriend someone just started a new topic a few minutes before you called "Gastric Band Revision to a Sleeve" check it out - good luck ps this is not really a new topic - many threads around here with comments - band to sleeve - check it out
  11. anyone had this done? cheers mark uk
  12. It will grow back. Trust me. Dont do anything to it. If youre insecure, about hair loss, do what I done, cut it off and wear wigs. Mine look so real, and tbh theyre not so expensive. And believe it or not since I havent touched my hair, and keep it regularly groomed and clean, its thicker than it was before. Yes its strange, but it just happened that way. Ill keep it short until I get both my surgeries done. My revision from the band to gastric. Thats 3 hours under, and I can imagine Im going to be losing lots more. Thank God for the invention of wigs.

Have had RouxNY, Can I have Lap Band too?

There is a lady in the support group that I go to that had RNY surgery, then gained some of her weight back. She then had revision surgery and got the lap band and is back on the road to losing again. Good luck to you.

    RNY from lap band

Know a few who have had it; some have maintained their weight, others haven't. Bypass is considered the gold standard because it generally results in the most dramatic/quick weight-loss, however, dramatic and quick loss is rarely ideal. To me, gastric bypass is way too invasive and I'd rather have all of me in tact. The fact that you have to worry about dumping and have to live off vitamins for the rest of your life is a turn off for me. I don't want to be taking pills everyday for the rest of my life due to the fact that my system has been altered in such a way that I can't absorb certain vitamins. Even though results are usually promising with bypass, all surgeries require a lifestyle change. Knowing how to eat and the importance of moving (note, I didn't say exercise) is critical for anyone losing weight, with or without surgery. Plenty revise to bypass, but I've also seen bypass patients revise to Lapband; it's a catch-22. If you're willing to make the needed change, any surgery will work, so will non-surgical methods.
  15. Ok so the doctors painless quick 10 min surgery.....not so quick...about an hour...not so painless about a 5 (on a 1 to 10 scale) Not in horrific pain, but certianly not painless. I guess some tissue had already grown around the port so he had a hard time getting it out and he actually burned ...yes I said burned, some of my flesh with a laser to get it out...then, when he was stitching me up..it flipped AGAIN! Can you believe it...he had to cut his stitches and flip it back and stitch me back up again.:tired I love my doctor I think he's very competent but geezzzzzz...... needless to say i'm pretty sore. back to the couch for me.

    DS as an addend

Yes, you are correct. The sleeve is now done as a stand-alone for people who don't want or need the malabsorption of the switch part. Regain is a problem with the sleeve, however. Dieting will be necessary once the sleeve stretches out, which is inevitable. Re-sleeving is dangerous, because after the stomach is stretched, the resulting wall is thinner. A rupture after re-sleeving can happen, or a leak. Some surgeons actually started doing the sleeve and getting it paid for by insurance by getting the DS approved and then only doing the sleeve. And while the second half of the DS can follow later, the weight loss results are vastly different from a virgin DS done all at once. The metabolic advantage of the complete surgery is far superior to a two-stage DS. There are many people who revise from all other weight loss surgeries to the DS because their WLS has failed them. I have heard of only 2 DS people who have revised to another WLS, in contrast. The DS is certainly the platinum of the WLS world.

    Reflux before sleeve

I have has acid reflux for years. I was taking Prevacid daily with good control prior to surgery. My surgeon did discuss the possiblilty that my reflux could continue or even worsen after the sleeve. She explained that if it gets out of control the only option is to revise to gastric bypass. I did some research and like Laura said, it seems to be different for everyone. Some people get better others get worse while some stay the same. I figured that without the sleeve I would be taking meds for reflux the rest of my life anyway. I decided to go for it and hope for the best. My surgeon did change my med to one she feels is better, protonics. So far I haven't had any problems. I am fours weeks out.
  18. 2 weeks after my band surgery I had to go back in for port revision. Port busted. Another surgery this year 2006, port broke again. My doctors office told me it "just happens", but then I asked again last week and their response was a little more honest. THey said it can break for many reasons; mostly being the was I eat. So ....now I wonder, did I do something to force the port to break, like throwing up or something. So if anyone else had it done because it "broke" let me know what you know. THx,
  19. So far so good:) I would like to have more than just clear liquids though LOL
  20. I asked the hospitals bariatric nurse that one today.. she said it you have to have time for the sutures that hold the port to heal and mold around it.. people who rush into ab exercises risk having to have a 2nd surgury for port revisions. the lady next to me was having one today, and did not look too happy about it.. she was real uncomfortable. I look at it this way.. Dr. Spiegal may not be all warm and fuzzy, but he has done more than anyone else. I can follow the rules for 3 months. Someone told me a great way to indirectly work the abs without straining them is to do the hula hoop. but even then I think I'll wait awhile
  21. How long was the surgery? How long did you stay in the hospital after your procedure? I'm having my revision in December - I've had the band for almost 10 years. Sucks.
  22. Poor Baby! I hope you're all better soon. Sorry you had to go through the revision.
  23. On January 16th I had revision surgery. I had my first lap band surgery back in Nov 2004. My band slipped about 6 months ago. I was originally banded in Mexico by Dr. Lopez. I feel like I am in a very small club of those who have had lap band surgery twice. I learned a lot with each surgery. Here is what I know to be true for me…. 1. Surgery in the states rules!!! What I thought was adequate care in Mexico turns out to pale in comparison to the care I received here in the good old USA. I felt such a sense of relief knowing that if something went wrong, I was totally taken care of. Waking from surgery and looking out to see my surf spot was priceless. My dad driving 15 minutes to pick me up was beautiful. Being so close to friends and family was great. Having staff that spoke English was calming. (I speak fluent Spanish but don’t want to have to think when I don’t feel good) 2. The gas pains after surgery are much worse than the incision pains. With both surgeries, I was out of bed 4 hours after surgery and walking the halls. This time, I walked all night long because the gas between my shoulders was so bad. I am now 6 days post op and I still feel some gas. Now let’s not confuse this gas with flatulence! But what a topic that turns out to be this time!!!!!!!!!! 3. Poop and farts……..With a liquid diet and vicodin…..my bowels decided to hibernate. It wasn’t until day 4 following surgery that I was able to poop. 2 bowel movements in 6 days is not my idea of proper function. And the farts! I almost lost my boyfriend this weekend due to my indiscretion. We were in a car for 2 hours and for some reason, I was exceptionally gassy and out of control. He is very old fashioned in that regards and still doesn’t believe that that came out of his precious girlfriend. It made me sick. 4. I am now $24, 000.00 in debt because of this lap band. It breaks my heart everyday to think about it. I have no insurance and this all came out of pocket. I wish Dr Lopez would have done a COMPETENT surgery in the first place so I wouldn’t have had to have this revision. 5. I am expecting to loose my hair in a few months. At least this time I will be prepared. 6. Liquid vicodin is the nectar of the Gods. Christine

    Heartburn after Unfill?

Mostly I stopped posting because I work 45hrs a week and go to school, so I just haven't had the time! I also stopped because I was getting a lot of negative feedback for being anti-band and scaremongering when I pointed out that not everybody has a happy ever after ending. We all want to lose weight so much that we can sometimes be willfully blind to the potential side effects. It's the truth, but people don't want to hear it. I'm on my way to getting my band out. It cost me $18K to put in, but it will be free to revise to an RNY as long as I'm willing to be patient and jump through the hoops for the government. If all goes on schedule, I should have surgery August or September. Now I'm just concerned about the damage my band may have done. I've had the x-ray done and it doesn't look like it has slipped but there may be something else going on which is causing the heartburn.
  25. Revision surgery? I was sleeved, nothing to revise to since all of my health conditions have been resolved.
