Am I losing weight too slowly?

Everyone is different, but try hard not to compare your weightloss with others. It's discouraging. Keep in mind that you weigh less than you did before and you are never going to get the weight back. You are on the path to your goal and although it may have a few bumps along the way, your going to reach your goal. Congratulations on your weight loss.

    Scared and indecisive

You know at one time I weighed 408 pounds went to la weightloss for 8 months and lost to 343 now I am back to 383. The doctor told me I needed to lose weight. My joints are getting bad due to weight loss and I have sleep apnea and borderline diabetes. I truely don't see my health getting better, in fact it is getting worse. It really all depends how long you are willing to live with your issues that deal with how much overweight you are. Me I am taking a leap of faith and making a step on a path that I don't know. A healthy path for my life!!!

    Scared and indecisive

I am 10 days post op and it was practically painless for me! When I first looked into weight loss surgery I refused to do the RNY it was to dangerous sounding and did not want the lap band because I did not want a foreign object left in me. The doctors than told me about the sleeve, I prayed and God showed me this was so right for me because I had to do something. You see I have been overweight since birth, so I was not like some who have been skinny in the past and now were trying to get back to that. I remember weighing 180 in junior high so I never really felt my weight until I turned 40 and my knees started to ache, back, etc. This is one of the best decisions Ive made to date! You can do it! Ill support you thru it, hey we can support one another because I know I have some bumpy days ahead as well! God Bless

    Just need encouragement

Mrie, I have been struggling with thesame issue. I lost 78 lbs with my band before I really started exercising, I joined a gym Feb 1st and have only lost 3 lbs since joining. I was working out 4-5 times a week and not seeing a difference, so I cut it back to 2-3 days a week and the scale is moving ever so slightly, but I am noticing a difference in my clothes sizes. I went form a 16 to a 12 very quickly, was not in 14's very long. It will happen, it is funny how our bodies work, more people have been noticing my weght loss now in the last week then before , it is because my body is shaping. Don't get discouraged, they say muscle weighs more then fat so maybe you are building more muscle, I started off with weights and cardio and was stuck but since have only been doing cardio and like I said the scale is moving agai nslowly. We can not let thescale dictate to us or discourage us, think off all of the non scale victories you have had since banding. Could it be you are not eating enough, when I do not eat 1200 -1400 calories a day my body shuts down and goes into starvation mode and every morsel of food I put in thereafter is stored . Hang in there you wil lstart to see a difference, DO NOT GIVE UP!!!

    A Few Questions

Best of luck on your upcoming banding!! 1. Not all bandsters have these problems. I do not have any more problems with gas and/or burping than I did pre-band. When I was tighter, I occasionally had a little gurgling sound in my esophagus while eating. But others didn't notice it. I have not suffered the hair loss that others have reported either. 2. Once I healed, I have not been aware of my band. 3. I have not done rigorous abdominal exercises. But I have done heavy-duty bicycling, hiking, and walking with no problems. I wouldn't think jumping up and down should affect anything, once you are healed. 4.If I eat too big a bite and/or too fast, it gets "stuck" and that is painful. If I chew my food very well, no problems. I can not feel the food passing through. 5. No! I love my band! It's given me control of my life and helped me get out in the world.
  6. Hello all, I am a little nervous but I am really look forward to my surgery June 6th in San Jose, CA with Dr. McKeen. He is the best. I made the decision after thinking about gastric bypass. As soon as the decision was done I was on the fast track to get this moving. It took me about 6 weeks to complete all the pre surgery items. What a thorough checking up that took. In any case, I am weighing in at 285 lbs. Funny the timing. I am putting the energy back into myself and my health. A dear friend of mine who has supported me through my weight loss previously is not speaking to me right now. It hurts really bad that I will not have his support when I go through the biggest transition to date. I didn't tell him about the surgery because we haven't been speaking as frequent. And when I did we ceased communication for another reason. I feel like my life coach is gone. All I can do is rely on myself. I know God is in my corner. Thank you for listening.

If you think you can do it on your own maybe you should have another go on your own? I know for me, after decades of dieting I knew I couldn't do it on my own. I'd lost all optimism in weight loss.

    Energy fluctuations?

Have you had any labs done yet (maybe a bit early, but some do them at 3 months,)? One thought is a bit of anemia, either from iron or B12 levels being too low. The other thought is diet - most of us are/were on a low carbohydrate diet by default (low calories, protein emphasis, not much room for other things...) and some take that to greater extremes by following one of the popular diets like Atkins, keto, paleo, etc. under the belief that they will improve weight loss results. When one is being particularly active, low carb diets can yield this kind of result, either overall lethargy, or running out of gas quickly. When on a low carb diet, our glycogen stores (short term energy reserves of carbohydrate) are being kept low, and it takes time to replace it with converting energy from fat - either stored or dietary - so we can wind up running short. It's like only filling your gas tank to half - it may not be a big deal if one is a stay at home sort making few errands, but if one is active and always out and about doing things, then one needs to keep filling up. I never worked to keep carb intake particularly low (or high - I simply ignored it) and never had any particular overall energy issues after the first few weeks. One thing I did run into at about four months was running out of gas after about an hour in the pool (just lap swimming). My RD suggested trying a pre-workout snack/meal that was relatively high in complex carbohydrate, moderate in protein and low to moderate in fat. I played with that and settled on a small sandwich of whole grain bread, meat and cheese, and that did the trick - breaking through that one hour wall. Hypothetically, that provided a bit of a blood sugar rise at about the time that I was otherwise starting to run low (or it was topping up my glycogen supply so that I had enough to go farther.) Note that this made no difference on the days that I did a weight circuit, as I never had any energy problems then, even though those workouts ran upwards of 90 minutes. So different activities can create different demands, so that is something to play with.

    So I moved to Montana...

Might try an internet search. Here is one that is held monthly but there is probably more. http://montana.providence.org/hospitals/st-patrick/for-patients-and-visitors/support-group/ It describes a Weight Loss Surgery Support Group at the end.
  12. Hi everyone, I'm just wondering what is the best way to get my weight loss going again. I've been stuck at the same weight for slightly over 2 weeks even though I have pretty good restriction right now. My eating habits have not changed (I promise!), I eat somewhere between 900-1100 calories a day. I'm satisfied with small protions so thats not the problem right now.....I've just quit losing. Any help with getting through this plateau would be greatly appreciated.

    Surgery date 12/14

I just had the sleeve 10 day ago. I do not have a thyroid. I will be on pills for the rest of my life. But as far as weight loss goes I have lost 25 lbs since pre-op so I guess it doesn't matter. If you don't have an endocrinologist, may I suggest that you go to one. They know more then the primary care.

    Long term consequences?

ResearchWLS_MetabolicReset.pdf Here's a pdf of research I compiled when looking into what an RNY - metabolic reset would do for me. I am a 7 year survivor of a stage IIIC high grade breast cancer with regional mets to 12 or 14 lymph nodes (can't recall exact #). I have metaplasia cells in my esophagus, and duodenum, and inflammatory cells in my stomach lining. There is a very small chance that I could develop ulcers or cancers in my remnant stomach and duodenum and there will be no easy way to keep track of the changes because an EGD no longer will work to visualize these areas without doing a surgical procedure through the abdomen. I STILL chose to do it. I was only 222.4lbs at surgery. I still chose to do it because of the almost instant benefit it gives for cancer recurrence. The benefits of WLS extend a minimum of 12 years (metabolically speaking--that's what the latest studies show). But I've seen posters here and at other sites who have 15-20 years of benefits. That's good enough for me. We are all only as good as our compliance with diet, lifestyle, and vitamin regimen details. But even so, you may still have issues with iron deficiency, B1 or even B12. Some have Vit D issues and others have folic acid issues. They happen. Sh*t happens. Some lose their teeth. My mom never had surgery and had upper and lower full dentures by 35. What a kick in the teeth. If this surgery can help reduce my cancer (all cause cancer that is obesity driven) by 38% mean average, you can pull every one of my frickin frackin toofies tomorrow and I wouldn't care. LOL. Throw me some dentures mama and let me get on with my life. LOL. So the point is...we humans are so smart, we're capable of scrounging up research to support our individual biases, perspectives, beliefs, and desires. It's a well-documented psychological bent. Hope you decide to do your surgery. Congrats on your loss thus far! Welcome to the boards. We brainy science geeks round these parts!
  15. It must just be my day for frustration, but I've let it build up over the last couple of months blowing it off. I do everything i'm supposed to do to lead a healthier life. I've had good weight loss, eat healthier, exercise, and i'm happy. Seems as though some of my friends and family like to tell me i'm obsessed with losing weight. I am not obsessed, I am determined to live a healthier way of life. One of them being my best friend since we were 5 (30 years) she told me she wants me to still be me and is afraid I am turning into somebody I never was---THIN!!! Yes she said that to me! My aunt told me the other day that I need to slow down and actually said I was obsessed. Now these two comments being from people who are also trying to lose weight, and I understand their struggle, of course i've been there and if I could have overcame it I wouldn't have needed surgery. But the big differnce between me and them other than surgery is that I am exercising and eating right...I didn't do this to not make a life change. Why are there always such downers. Everyone has to do what's right for them. I don't know if they are just jealous....but they claim to be "worried" about me. Worried about what? Me being healthier than them? I don't get it. Can anybody tell me if they have people like this in their lives and how do you deal with it? I know I should just shake it off, but today it just really bothered me. Thanks everyone :w00t:

    Hair loss?

Wow,I had not heard of this and I mavery upset to hear about it now. I lost a lot of hair after I had my 2nd child and I was taking a medication that cause it also. Looking to vent and gain insight

The type of surgery that you had will also affect how quickly you lose weight. Sleeve patients seem to lose weight slower than RNY. And then there are several other types of gastric bypass surgeries. Also many people gain weight immediately after surgery because they pump your body full of fluids. It takes a little while to lose this extra surgery weight. Also your body is still recovering from major trauma. So all-in-all a loss of 35 pounds in the first month is great.

    4 Month Update!

Congrat's to you on your successful weight loss. I hope all goes well with gaining your muscle back. Sorry to hear that you lost some in the process. Hopefully, others will learn from your mistake.
  22. My Dr. told me that most experience hair loss between 3 and 6 months. Tuesday will make 3 months for me. I haven't noticed anything yet but I'm so scared to lose my hair. Just wondering how many people have and haven't lost it. I know that everyone is different.
  23. I just got back from a cruise last week. I have very moderate restriction, and really didn't have any problems with eating. I still didn't eat bread, which is one thing I still avoid. I've never had a problem with motion sickness, and didn't have a problem on the cruise. I did catch a nasty cold, though, which is hanging on forever. Make sure you are very careful about using the anti-septic gels (provided on the ship), and wash your hands frequently. Also, take some anti-nausea pills, just in case. We didn't have a problem with the Norwalk virus on our ship, but I know that it continues to be a problem on cruises, and you sure don't want to be throwing up. My biggest concern was simply gaining weight on an eat-a-thon cruise. But, I gained only one pound, which dropped off the next day back, and two more the next day, so I actually had a net loss of two pounds two days after getting back. That really topped off a great vacation! (Oh, and an absolutely gorgeous YOUNG man hit on me!) Tami
  24. I think this will be kinda neat to hear about "first compliment" stories. My first compliment came from the maintenance man at the college I attend. I was getting on the elevator and he was on there already, and said to me, "Somebody is losing, you look really good, just don't lose too much." I just laughed it off and thought to myself-Wait til you see me in the fall!

    ewww

I am fed up.. I am gaining weight cuz my fill isnt tight (and I dont follow a diet consistantly)........ I need a fill, but even with one, I HAVE to restrict myself in calories, carbs ect.. OR i wont lose much more.. I am NOT happy about a approximate 75 pound loss in 18 months... I lost pre-op and I lost during a few winter months, ever since I have been gaining and loosing the same 10-15 pounds... but I dont see anymore loosing of those pounds, only more gain. I struggle with extra tightness.. often enough and I respect it.. .. but its inconsistantcy is really annoying, cant plan my diet....have ups and downs with emotions with eating food.. all cuz I just dont know whats ok. I hate that. When I am well restricted and I know basically how restricted I am, I accept it and I dont have all the concerns about food. I dont crave what I know I cant have. (its great) But there are enough times when I am not so tight to allow in too many calories....... and I need a fill... for those times.. I dont want to deal with the times I will be extra tight.. twice as much. I fear I may send myself into a too tight situation like I did a few months ago... and have to accept that my restricition level now is where I have to be.. and where the weight is coming back on. I will get a fill as soon as I have the money.. I wish I could do it now! IF I JUST DIDNT HAVE a SENSITIVE BAND.. IF I was just more consistant.. EVERYTHING would be perfect. If this is it.. I have been left with a smaller scale weight, a flabby nasty body that cannot be contained and maked me look fatter everywhere but the shoulders back and face.. I deal with skin infections now, and lower self body image. The changes, the flab is sooooo different and soooo ugly and sooooo bothersome and so apparent that my weight loss does not seem worth it. My sciatica is worse,.. ewww one day, I feel a rash between my legs, on my inner thighs and buttocks near the gina... it just showed up that big, nothing gradual at all.. I have never in my life had a rash down there... !! I have been 400 pounds and I have been laid up and unshowered and it never ever happened... I have got small rashes of 1/4 the size.. under my belly many times, I soak in a tub and wash those and they go away by the next day.. This rash was NOT like those ones.. this rash was like a burn, raised and leather like, and hurt. Truth is I know about how fat people get rashes.. once I was browsing through a web site of gross pictures and saw two naked ladies about 250 to 300 pounds bending over to show their asses and there huge infected rashes that seemed to me to be untaken care of.. (real bad) I didnt understand it at all.... I felt that anyone could control such a thing if they tried hard enough. I knew that I would never be able to live with such a problem. soooo.... I dont freak out.. I soak in the tub and wash and wash it and assume it will go away after a few soaks... and then I guess I have to take extra steps to keep my new massive flabs clean and tidy. (like I dont have enough to do to keep it all clean down there, I use about 5 wet wipes everytime I pee, and need to..) The next time I soak..... My rash is peeling off in brown skin chunks... I peel and peel and it never ends.... the skin underneath is raw and not healed. I begin to cry my head off. (never had a yeast infection or anything happen down there.. plus my odor has always been faint) I am scraping off skin from that area... unreal. I worry that there will be lasting effects (like i wasnt ugly enough down there)... its like sinking a level of obesity I didnt count on everr.... Especially didnt think of it as an affect of weight loss.. NOW its happened obviously cuz of all the excess flab from my weight loss. I cant keep my thighs from touching in the tub, they float together... and out of the water I have to spread my legs real far before they dont touch.. I would guess the flab added about 6 inches to the size of my inner thighs.. I get up the nerve to take some pictures.. I have to ask my daughter to do it.. and she is nice of course... but after wards I cry for like an hour.. I dont cry alot.. It was really humiliating.. I have took pics of every rash i got so far, but this isnt something I want to tell anyone happened to me.. and how gross to have photographed.. BUT.... I have to think of my future and do all I can if and when I have to fight for my skin cut off as a medical nessesity. My worst fear is that who ever I am talking to about that issue, tells me or implies that I am not really doing all I possibly can to keep clean, or I am lying about never having had any rashes when I was over 400 pounds. and that those are regular rashes that are trypical of obese and nothing extrodinary .. bath more, wear cotton undies.. etc... Deal with it. My flab is so horrible.. I HATE IT.. I dont see why it changed sooo much at so little loss.. GRRRR IF I knew i was going to lose another 150 pounds, and most likey get it all cut off, I wouldnt be so upset over it.. but all I see is.. I am not going to lose enough weight to cut flab off and I now have this deformed body that I hate more than my 400 pound body. Plus if I gain weight and I get to 400 again... OMG, I cant imagine how bad that would look.. Why isnt all of this an incentive to DO WHAT I NEED TO DO...
