Kinda Sorta Gotta Date! (I Think)
Jen2248 replied to lessofme's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have told people at work, most of them were really cool about it, just about two of them said "oh I know someone who did that and they regret it", so asked why. Both of them said that they gained the weight back! I replied with well what do they eat, and then begin to educate them on what their "friend" is doing wrong and that is why they are gaining it back. They can not reply and don't say anything negative again about it! Just stick up for yourself, you know what's right for you! -
That's the fascinating part of his apprehension. I have a Vagus nerve stimulator implant. it is like a pacemaker with a lead (or wire) that is attached to the vagus nerve located directly next to my esophagus and it causes constrictions in my throat when it pulse's. it's purpous is to regulate any seizure activity by sending "pulse's or signals" to my brain. I have baffled myself with his concern about internal injury from falls. I've thought about constrictions, but I've also been told that bander's have been encouraged to exercise, which includes sit ups, crunch's etc. I've never done the tango with a wheel barrell, but I have eaten my fare share of dirt. In all of my "event's", i can't recall any stomach pain. ribs maybe, but not the stomach. I guess I'm just sitting right in this void known as "hurry up and wait". so, i'm seeking answers from the real world. My neurologist and his PA are both so dedicated to controlling my seizures and it's because of their dedication to me and my treatment that I have come so far along in controlling my seizures. I've gone from 2-4 a week to about 3-4 a month. I just can't spend the rest of my life fighting my weight and dealing with future health problems that may come with the weight. It'd be the like not riding a bike because i might have a seizure and fall on my face. or go swimming because i might have a seizure and drown. If I'm missing something, can someone help put the difference into perspective?

Taking your clothes in at the sides
WrenBird posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone! I was wondering how many of you are taking their clothes in at the side or are just buying new ones? I'm one of those horders who've kept all of their clothes since I was 12 upward, thinking someday I'll lose weight, so I'm quite lucky that a lot of those clothes fit me now  I was also thinking of taking my clothes in until I lose all of the weight, that way I won't have to keep buying. (limited moneyz. Student life. Blergh). Anyone else? Feel free to post up pictures of stuff you've bought too :smile2: -
You look fantastic! As for the weight stall - 7 lbs is nothing to scoff at I have lost 15 pre-op and I was feeling badly about not losing more so far. Then I picked up a ten pound weight and realized just exactly how much that was! It put it in to perspective.

Finally after plateauing for a long time, I have lost nearly 5lbs. What have I done differently? Well I listened to the psych finally. I stopped weighing myself altogether, and stopped getting weighed and measured at the gym too. His concern was that the small difference I would see from weighing daily, or even weekly could have a detrimental effect how I eat if it doesn't look good. I only weighed at the dietitian's and when I went for my last check up and fill at the specialist's rooms on Thursday. Anyway they are both pleased with my progress and say I am right on track with the weight loss progress. I have also increased my sessions at the gym to compensate for not being able to walk far because of a problem with my ankle and that too seems to have worked in my favour. In all the time that I was plateauing, though, I was getting smaller and everyone was making favourable comments. I could see it in the clothes I was wearing too and that there were less bulges poking out everywhere. I have gone down from a size 20 (Australian sizing) to an 18, and can fit in some size 16 long pants and tops. For the first time in MANY years I have bought clothes in 'normal' shops as opposed to 'fat girl' shops, and am buying 'Large' as opposed to 'extra large' or even 2XL. I do feel good and love being banded. It is definitely working.

Wow that is fantastic news for you gingydilly. I seemed to have gained about a pound since surgery but am not too worried as I am sure it will move down again soon. Started walking again yesterday so that should see a change.

Please don't beat yourself up. I had so many food funerals that I gained 10 pounds from when I initially saw my surgeon in November to when I saw her again in December. Thankfully I'm doing the preop diet and have lost everything that I gained. But looking back I'm really angry at myself because the weight gain just made my goal farther away.

I hd 6 weeks between my last weigh in and my surgery date. I gained 19 pounds. Kid you not. I ate everything that was not nailed down. Honestly, I was grateful for the 4 day pre-surgery liquid diet -- I was literally sick of food! food funerals are very common. I do not recommend doing what I did, because now, despite having lost 16 pounds in 2 weeks, I am still 3 pounds higher than my last weigh in! Just do the best you can. For me, it is SO much easier to stick to a liquid diet now that I have been sleeved--- I have to remind myself when to have my soup/protein shakes on a timer-- I do not even think about food most of the day.

Gastric bypass or sleeve?
OutsideMatchInside replied to gpmed's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The idea of touching my intestines is what has put me off weight loss surgery for years. The complications and the types of complications are just too risky. I would rather die fat than deal with intestinal issues. The people that I have known that have RNY, they get hungry, really hungry about a year out. I think it is because their stomach is still there producing all those hormones and interacting with their brain. In the end it is a personal choice, but I felt the sleeve gave me the best chance with the least amount of risk. I didn't like that RNY would make me too different for the rest of my life. Plenty of people have parts of their stomach removed for all kinds of reasons and live perfectly normal lives. Rerouting your intestines sets you up for issues for the rest of your life. -
I was sleeved 12/14 too. The day I came home from the hospital I was 7 lbs heavier that the morning of surgery! Though annoyed I wasn't worried. I had two c-section before and know what IV fluids can do. I am now seeing the scale move at a snails pace below my surgery day weight. Don't worry it will happen!

BURNING MORE CALORIES THEN YOU EAT
SerendipityHappens replied to keya34's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Yay for swimming!!! As far as MFP numbers, I find it WAY overestimates calories burned for me. Maybe for someone with normal metabolism it is fine, but for me it wasn't working. I've finally embraced my slower metabolism as a good thing and am getting the sleeve done to help me better manage it. MFP treats weight loss like a pure numbers game but we know it's more complicated than that. -

It is normal to be scared. I'm scared too. This is a major surgery and life change. I'm new to the site too. I find it very helpful. I've heard a lot of positives about the bypass compared to banding. It took me 2 years to decide to have the surgery. My weight is only making my medical issues worse. I've tried every diet possible and after researching about bypass surgery I decided this is the right decision. I wish you luck on your journey. We can do it.

Stalls are a normal, natural, and necessary part of the weight loss process. If you intend to lose a lot of weight you will experience stalls. Most people experience their first stall about three weeks after surgery. Follow your program. Focus on getting in all of your Protein and fluids. Take your Vitamins and supplements as instructed. Exercise. Stay off the scale. If the numbers in the scale are going to dictate how you feel, then I recommend you weigh no more than once a week (or even less often). Embrace the Stall! http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall

No weight loss for 3-5months
TapSnap replied to Southkrypt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just my $0.02, but you asked for advice to help lose weight. If you want to lose, you can't have a "little treat" every day. It doesn't work that way. At least switch to decaf and a sugar free and fat free creamer. Caffeine stimulates your appetite and dehydrates you. Also, 100 - 200 g of protein is pretty high. It isn't like you are running marathons weekly. I suspect you are way over your calories for weight loss. The best thing you could do is go back to your nutritionist an d get back on the wagon with a set number of calories, grams of protein, carbs, and fats and track it. Good luck to you. Remember, the sleeve is a tool. You still need to follow the rules and keep discipline for success. I wouldn't say 100-200g is high since my nut told me to aim for 130g when working out as much as I am. But how the hell you getting anywhere near 200g? I strugle for 100 most days and to get 130 I am doing two Protein drinks and two Protein Bars and two meals. Even then I some times fall short. -

No Weight Loss No weight loss for 3-5months
Southkrypt posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have turned to this forum in hopes of finding some answers. I have my VSG back in Sept 12, I was 340-345 pounds at a 49.9% BMI. I am currently 245-250 and 31% BMI. I work out 3-4 times a week with Push Ups, Running 1mile on the tread mill, and play Airsoft on the weekends. For the past 3-5months my weight has not changed. I am starting to get concerned I will not drop any more. Is this normal. The Vitamins I take daily are Multi Vitamin, Calcium Citrate, A & D, Fish Oil, Creatine, BCAA, B12 and have a 16oz whey Protein shake every morning. I eat eggs, chicken, Fish and some pork along with Fruits and Veggies every day. Drink about 3-5 cups of coffee with the liquid Hazelnut creamer daily, and Drink 50-5oz of Water daily. Am I doing something wrong. I feel great, but think I should be dropping weight. -
This is something he should see his primary care doctor about. It could be band related in that he is losing weight, or it could be something else.
-
I know that women go through severe hormone fluctuations with weight loss and I venture to guess that the same can happen to men. For me (a woman) it leveled out and went back to normal after a few months. He should discuss it with his doctor though.

Well it's great to hear you are happy with the band, As far the stagnance in weight loss, i'd say don't let it discourage you at all, you're right everyone's body is different, and yours might just need to get the swings of things=). Thanks for the feedback, it is very helpful! -
its a good start. maybe after you lose more, you'll want to do more. also - as you start really losing weight, you'll need to ramp it up more to lose the same amount of weight.
-
I don't think it's arrogant to talk about running marathons. Lots of people have goals to do things like that. I think that you would need to work the band to lose the weight, and then as someone suggested, have the band unfilled, partially or all the way. Of course (and don't take this the wrong way), it is also going to depend on how you gained the weight in the first place. If it's just a matter of eating too much, or eating junk, the band can help you eat less at one time, as long as you can work on making the right choices; but then can you be sure to not go back to those choices, when you unfill the band to eat more for training. hope this helps!

I had my first follow up appointment today at my 10 day mark and lost 20 pounds since my surgery! I didn't really do much pre-op so I know its a lot of water weight, but seeing that number was awesome! So shocked. I was actually debating on wether or not to look at the scale for my weigh in but I am so glad I did.
