2 questions for those closer to goal

I am down to the last 20 myself . . . and I am still consistently losing. It is getting harder however and I find I have to "tweak" things regularly. I will stay on a particular "plan" for a week and if I see that my weight is moving in the right direction, I stay the course. When I start to stall out or don't see movement, I make changes to exercise, calorie intake, Protein intake, food choices, etc to change things up and hopefully make them move again. It seems like keeping my body "guessing" seems to be the best way to peel off the pounds at this point. I also do not keep my calorie intake the same every day to avoid a rut. I have very low calorie days (800-950) mixed with higher calorie days (but never above 1250 calories). I usually do two low, then one high but it is not always the same. At six months out, I have found that I stall at any calorie level if it is always the same. I also can stall if I eat the same foods every day (which is in my nature to do). This works for me, but of course our bodies are all different. I suffered through many plateaus in the beginning, and once I learned how to break them, I turned plateau busting into part of my regular routine . . . and it is working beautifully for now . . . who knows if it will still work the last 5-10 pounds to goal . . . or if it will work when I bypass my original goal and go for the smoking hot goal of 125???

Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor i need a buddy

Congrats on making a choice to improve your life. Surgery is just around th ecorner. Yes, you have alot of hard work ahead of you, and it is on ongoing process, but you will have a tool to help you get there. The liquid diet before surgery can be difficult so eamil one of us, or post when you are frustrated with it. It will do 2 things for you- 1 is kick start your weight loss and the 2nd is make surgery a little easier for your doctor- These are both good things don't you agree? since you are so close you make find some useful information at my blog including the 7 things I wish I knew before having lapband surgery - you can get to it here: http://sandisbandedliving.com/7-things/ Please let me know if you find this useful
  3. G'day, all. I'm almost 6 weeks out, and the weight loss is going very well. I'm down 29# and about 2 sizes. My 18yo daughter is so excited for me, and so is my husband! She points out changes in my body, from "I can fit my arms around you to hug all of you now!" to "Your knees look different!" I am so blessed to have them behind me in this journey. Just a few negatives right now -- I still have to have a BIG nap (2+ hours) almost every day. I hope that improves soon. Also, just today, I'm having some nausea. I decided to go back to pureed food for a day to see if that helps, and it does a little bit. I'd love to hear from anyone else who has had exhaustion and/or nausea at 6 weeks . . . although overall this is SO worth it! Best of luck to everyone. This is not an easy journey, but by the grace of God, we'll all get through it!

    People that workout....

I'm 8 weeks post op and have been working out for 3 weeks now. I started with aqua aerobics and took it very slow and easy the first week. Just two days that week of that. Then at the beginning of the second week I went to the gym and tried the resistance machines, all at level 1 to get a feel for what I could do. That week I did the two aqua classes and added one day of resistance machines to the mix. At the beginning of this week, I tried the treadmill. I bought a stomach belt because it still hurts a bit when my stomach bounces. The belt works great and makes me sweat more in that area so double good news. I did intervals of walk/jog for a total of 25 min that day and that was it. That was Sunday of this week. I did aqua aerobics on Tuesday, resistance machines and treadmill (15 min) on Wednesday, and aqua again on Thursday. I'm going to rest now until Sunday. I've felt a dramatic increase in my energy since I started working out and am still dropping weight steadily. Good luck! SW 236 CW 193 Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  5. I am 5 weeks postop and I have a general feeling of fatigue and I get winded really easily. I live in New York City so I'm often running up and down flights of stairs for my commute. When I get to the top of the stairs I have to stop because I'm so week. I want to start exercising but I'm so exhausted by the time that I get home from work I can't even think about exercising. Will this start to get better? Will I have more energy soon? Or do you think I should start exercising now even though I'm exhausted and build up my stamina and endurance? I've just Never felt this way before. I've felt lazy and full from food but I didn't feel weak. I am dropping weight fairly quickly. Coming Up On Three Years ...

You are so inspiring! I am one year out (in June) and feel like you. I haven't lost 100 pounds, but still feel the healthy, wonderful feeling that comes with weight loss. Keep up the good work and congratulations!
  7. Twice, I was out walking this past summer,,I made it about 1/4 mile and it took me about 10 minutes to do that. I ended up in ICU both times due to respiratory distress because of a rare autoimmune disease I have..it sent me into a Myasthenia Gravis crisis. My muscles in my chest wall just couldn't do the work..not to mention the extra weight those muscles had to try and lift. Today,,I walked at 2 mph on my treadmill for a mile!!!!!..no distress, no pain,,just energy and enthusiasm. I just thank God that this is finally happening for me. Steroids put most of the weight on and by golly I'm going to fight to get this weight off and get well!!!

  9. Hello! A bit about me, I'm 22, I have been overweight ever since I gained consciousness. (you know how its like you wake up one day and you're 14.) So about as far as I can remember, and according to pictures, even farther back, have i been obese. I'm 5"9. and 290lbs. I have PCOS in the worst way, and my doctor said that the testosterone cells are produced by fat, which I have a large quantity of. My insurance provider is FEPblue and from what I have read, as well as talked to the insurance company on the phone, it has wonderful coverage. I'm kind of terrified of my insurance coordinator, only because she seems very matter-of-fact and stressed out because she has a very hard job, and this whole matter is extremely sensitive and close to my heart and I find it scary to approach her and ask her things. So she gave me a sheet for a 3 month consecutive and 90 day doctor check in. But I had some out of town matters I had to attend to, so I got three dr visits in 90 days, but not consecutive months. I called my insurance and the lady said consecutive was not required. So I'm afraid that even though my insurance does not require it, my insurance coordinator will try to make me start all over and re-do the whole process because she doesn't want the insurance company to have any room to deny me. Also, my pcp..I like him, but deep down, part of me thinks he might not provide the accurate information to push this surgery along. I looked at the notes he has written online and he has brought up some things from when I was a minor that are troubling me. I don't know if he exactly wants me to have the surgery and I'm afraid he won't say the right things in order for the insurance to approve me. I don't know. I feel stressed out, and I'm losing sleep. and on top of all that, the financial part is stressing me as well because if I have the surgery by the end of this year, the insurance company will cover most of it because the deductible has already been met, but if I have the surgery in January then more out of pocket payment for me. Typing all this out has already made me feel better. But is there anyone who can offer some kind words of advice? i appreciate you taking the time to read this!
  10. Sorry, don't have first hand knowledge about diabetes but know my husband got his in check just by losing 20 lbs. I am sure there are people here who can tell you what happened with them. The weight loss is amazing! I was one of those who started at a lower BMI so I really didn't expect to lose 25 pounds this quickly. I had a hard time actually picking a goal weight because I didn't really know what was reasonable. I chose a goal by visiting a website that provided the healthy weight ranges for someone with a small to medium build. I would be happy to hit the 130's, going just a little under would be a bonus! Depends what your definition of normal food is : ) For me, I was fairly progressive about moving to new foods and I have not had any issues. I make sure it is mushed first or I chew alot before swallowing. Newly introduced foods cause my tummy to gurgle but everything has settled for the most part. Some people stick to a very stringent liquid diet but that didn't work for me. I liked the Cornell University plan the best. You can find it at: http://www.cornellweightlosssurgery.org/pdf/dietary_guidelines_sleeve_gastrectomy.pdf There are a few people here who have used it and posted that they liked it. I am now eating most anything I want, within reason and in very small quantities. You definitely do not want to overfill your stomach. A couple of times I have taken just one or two more bites to finish my 2 ounce serving, and it was too much. No citrus fruit or juice or spicy foods - it hurt my stomach before surgery; no nuts, things with seeds. No raw veggies or salad. Have had a couple of sips of a margarita but it was when I had a decent amount of food in my tummy. Everyone is different. Take lots of notes and then see what works best for you and adjust to that. No matter what you ask, you will often get two very different opinions. Its like religion, politics or having a new baby! : ) Good luck with your research! I hope your eventual surgery goes smoothly!
  11. Hi I just wanted know how I go about to obtain my weight watchers diet history. I have been looking into lap band for a while now and I finally made plans to go through with it. I have (BCBS) and was told I have great coverage. As many of you know I have to do the 6 month diet, however I was told it will be 3 months because I have 3 months of weight watchers & my insurance will except that. So I have two questions 1. How do I obtain my weight watchers history? I emailed them on April 2nd I got a reply back on April 8th they told me they would get my history if I replied with the ok to do so. Well I replied and have yet to hear back (also is my diet history/tracking what I need or something else) 2. I also wanted to know if I could be denied by my insurance. Although I have been on weight watchers I haven't been tracking my food consistently I wanted to know if that could hurt my aprroval chances. Thanks in advanced sorry if so long
  12. Thanks all I finally got an answer from weight watchers I tracked all my food online and on my phone I was soo busy so I didn't get a chance to go to the meetings and tracking food on my phone is better and easier to me than writing everything down weight watchers told me that they don't have access to my online food journal information ugh!!! I am getting really frustrated I was told because of my weight watchers history I could do just 3 months but I might end up doing 6 because I don't have access to my food journals Yesterday was my first meetIng (3 or 6 month diet meeting) and I was told it might work I did turn in my weight watchers receipts and I paid with pay pal so I also turned those in Man oh man June will be my second visit I really hope I can just do 3 months

    Does Anyone Still...

For so many years I don't think I saw myself as heavy as I was/am and now I just don't see myself as anything, I know that sounds nuts. I don't look in the mirror much, hate to have my pic taken. I have no idea what people see when they see me. This is all such a weird thing. I hope when I lose a LOT of weight that I will see a difference or that I will see SOMEBODY. Cause right now I just see a nobody in a big body with a very double chin, that I usually don't even want to put make up on. There are so many things that would change for me to lose the weight and to be healthy. I want to CARE about my appearance. I want to WANT to look in the mirror, I want to PROUDLY have pics taken with my beautiful grandchildren.

    Bigest Loser

Oh Roxy! My heart sank reading your post. I am 1 week post-op and let me tell you, been there done that! It's so hard losing weight, its so easy to just keep doing what we are doing. Change is hard and uncomfortable. On a diet we can salad all day long but still want a hamburger and fries.... You are young and it sounds like you are ready for change. Start a daily and weekly goal. Drink 64 oz of water daily, eat one salad a day and portions, find an activity you enjoy, eat breakfast, and the more protein the better. Don't be hard on yourself and make your health your priority. Sending you hugs!
  18. I really don't think it's that bands are a failure-- it's that its just so easy to get around their restriction. And as overweight people we KNOW ways to get our fix of foods (or I do, anyways)! I KNOW my band can work for me-- I also know that I cheated that puppy for almost 4 years, so I can see their concern. But, I've got friends who went the bypass route who have gained back pretty much all of their weight, so by that reasoning, all WLS is faulty, right?
  19. BetsyB

    Overeating?

I have not yet achieved restriction. In order to avoid overeating, I weigh my portion, plate it, and leave the kitchen to eat at the table. I don't allow myself to eat more. It sucks. REALLY sucks. But I do it. I do think that everyone who's able to work with his/her doctor to ensure adequate restriction does reach a point where it's no longer possible to overeat without consequences--AND to feel satisfied. The satisfaction part is really important, IMO--isn't that why we did this in the first place? From reading here, though, it's painfully obvious that there are many doctors who resist adjusting the band appropriately. I really don't know what their rationale could possibly be---there isn't a legitimate one. But many seem to have the attitude that patients have to exercise control above and beyond what is truly necessary, IMO. My doctor's stance is that adjustment decisions should be made based on subjective data (how I feel), and objective data (how I'm losing). I'm losing quite well, with no restriction at all. But while my stomach capacity is small, it empties rapidly--so I'm hungry soon after eating. In his book, that is a valid reason for a fill. He is even willing to schedule fills at my request FAR earlier than he expected would be necessary. I am SO grateful for this. Some other doctors feel that as long as there is loss, there is no need for a fill. IMO, this is ridiculous. All of us have shown, over and over, that we can lose weight; the problem is that hunger drives us to overeat and therefore regain. It seems as though this approach feeds in to the same old diet mentality, viewing weight loss as a moral issue ("if you just had willpower, you would do it"), and completely ignoring the physiological. Why these doctors even bother to wrap bands around their patients' stomachs baffles me. All that said, I think that as long as you have a doctor who's willing to take your comfort into account, you WILL reach the stage where you cannot overeat. After all, isn't that the purpose of the band?
  20. I'm still pre-op and have been on my pre-op diet a little over a month (doc is requiring I lose 38lbs before surgery). The first month, I wasn't super strict and only lost 9lbs. Since Tuesday, I've been in turbo mode and have lost almost 10lbs thanks to the plan my dietician put me on. It's super low calorie (1200 or less), high Protein (50%), low carb (20%), low fat (30%). The last two days, I have been extremely emotional/weepy! Yesterday, I broke down crying in the office at work with a coworker because my parents aren't coming over today for my birthday (it's Monday). It's not like that is a huge deal. My parents are super supportive and I see them fairly often. They just had something come up and can't make the 2 hour drive today. Today, I just sobbed uncontrollably over a video about a soldier and his therapy dog. It was a positive story but I couldn't stop crying. Lol! I'm not suffering from PMS (I'm fairly regular and still 2 weeks away from that) but this feels like the worst case of PMS ever. Had anyone else ever had this experience while losing weight?

  22. Hi! New here and am confused. I have recently had epigastric hernia surgery which let to me seriously considering weight loss surgery. I have been to a seminar where both gastric bypass and lapband was presented without pushing one over the other. I have visited my general physician to get his input and to start my supervised perioid that my insurance requires. I am 5' 7.5" and weigh 283. I meet my insurance BMI requirements without other health problems but I do have asthma, mitral valve prolapse, high blood pressure, and dysautonomia. My general physician strongly believes in lapband and does not want me to have lapband. I have been researching and I see other forums that are not specific to bypass or lapband where everyone doesn't like lapband. I have had 1 friend do bypass and do very well. I have had 1 friend do lapband and has not had a good experience. I have a 3rd friend who has had lapband within the past year and so far so good. I go back to the surgeon on the 20th to start whatever I need to with him. I have my husband's complete support. So I am here to learn more and make that decision. Can you help?

    wow...

Bob, don't read opinions into your significant other. You may be projecting your own feelings onto her. TALK to her. If you feel comfortable doing so, let her know what you have to do to get back on track and lose the weight you've recently gained. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that she is more understanding than you give her credit for and she may be more than willing to stand by you in this endeavor...and maybe even help you out.
  24. Banded Bob

    wow...

amazing. I came here after a hiatus to say almost the same thing except I haven't been able to get on track. I was divorced in January, have been battling for custody of my children and have alot of new stress at work. I have regained about 50 lbs I had worked soooo hard to lose. I need an adjustment but am so ashamed of myself I can't make the appointment. I met a wonderful, supportive woman and she has watched me fail. she hasn't said anything but I fear she's not happy with my weight gain wich adds more stress that the relationship could falter. I am unsure what to do. I am sick of being like this and every day tell myself I am going to get back on track only to fail. I am very depressed and the only thing holding me together right now is the love of my kids. I am hoping that coming here and reading the success stories will motivate me to call my doc and get the band adjusted and get myself out of this rut.
  25. I'm right there with ya. the "this time" is definitely implied. Or when they say "So-and-so had that surgery and she gained it all back a year later." Puh-lease!! Can these people not be supportive!?! Morons!! Sigh. That's why I come here for extra support.:biggrin1: Madfroglady.
