  1. Its frustrating as I pay my dietition $90 for half an hour and non of this was explained about the vitamins.. There was no ongoing education after surgery about nutrition once I got over the 6 weeks post op, I wasn't too bothered though, bc id rather they botch up the after care rather then the surgery... Great full all the went 100% everything else I can handle.. So I've just been researching myself had a personal trainer for a year that also taught me about healthy eating- great protein foods- he was better then my dietitian and I didn't even have to pay him for the dietition advice he did it all in his own time..
  2. Hi all, new to the site! Had a sleeve nearly a year & a half ago, was extremely overweight.. Weighed 130kg prior to surgery, have lost 42kgs in total.. Haven't really had any complications.. The occasional dumping, uncomfortable lying down straight after eating, stomach often makes strange noises at times when eating... Irregular loose bowels, hair loss, feel cold more often, and don't have the desire to really drink... I feel I generally eat quite well, and excercise at the gym 3-4 times a week... Yet still have a fair way to go, idealy I'd like to lose another 20-30kgs... Over the past year I've felt very letharic, sometimes weak, lack of energy, mood changes, lack of concentration & fatigue... It's really quite concerning, I've had numerous blood tests but nothings come up... Always just board line... Low ish Iron, slightly low blood count.. Thyroid is fine.. Blood sugar and cholesterol is fine... I am generally good with taking my Vitamins & try to eat 2-3 pieces fruit a day, with vegetables/meat & or salads... I am trying to encorporate more Protein into my diet, & Water... Having more blood tests next week, has anyone felt like this or has any answers? I wonder if it's malabsorption a as a result of the operation... **future**

As far as appointments required, that depends on your insurance plus your surgeon. Both will have different requirements. I have Blue Shield of California and I completed at least 1 Primary Care Doctor appointment, I completed 6 nutrition appointments and 1 psych appointment before they would approve me to see the surgeon (not to have surgery, but only to meet the surgeon. The surgeon would not meet me until I completed all their requirements: 1 orientation class, 1 pre-op class, 1 nutrition/exercise class. Then I had my surgeon appointment and from there I had several medical test appointments. All in all, I probably completed 20 task/appointments so that I could have the surgery. By the way these appointments don't stop once you have the surgery. Aftercare is extremely important to your success with banding. I have an appointment with the surgeon monthly, whereupon I receive a fill if needed. Plus, I do monthly blood work and attend support group appointments. And on top of all that, I still go see my nutritionist. You know the saying it "Takes a Village"? I am counting on the village to help me help myself become successful with this Band. As far as recovery time. Everyone is different. I had complications and stayed in the hospital for 2.5 days. I did not feel human until day 7 post op. I went back to my desk job after two-weeks off work. Good luck!
  4. Two weeks ago I took my grandkids to the beach for the day. This meant I went to the gym at 6 as usual, then into work until 10, then I picked up the kids and took them to the beach. I walked up and down the beach twice, played in the tide pools, had lunch and then back down the beach, and finally home. Somewhere during this process I was sitting in the sun, relaxing for a minute and started to reflect on my life today vs. 6 years ago before I was banded. Just 6 years ago I would have either gone to work or gone with the kids somewhere- not enough energy for both. Four years ago I would have gone to the gym in the morning and probably just taken the kids to the beach. Two years ago I would have gone to the gym, come into work for a bit and taken the kids to the beach. I would have never made it up and down the beach twice. I would have been exhausted by the time we had returned once from the tide pools. This time, approaching my 6th year with a lap band and at 61 years old, I went to the gym, then worked for 2 hours, then took the kids to the beach and walked back and forth on the beach, in out of the surf and the tide pools, up to the restaurant and back, and still had energy to spare. Life is a miracle, my grandkids are blessings, and every day I am grateful for my lap band. If you ‘re early in your journey ,take a moment to think about where you would like to be a year from now. Those who have been on this journey for a while ,take a moment and reflect on what something you are doing today would have been like before you were banded. Let’s share. You can read about this day and my past 6 years banded at Sandi's Banded Living — My Lapband Weight Loss Success Story Please let me know if you find it useful.

  6. Well done! It's a great feeling seeing the scale go down. Every pound counts! I am still waiting for some progress here... I have no idea why I am stalled... tried it all... but patience has been my new friend! =]
  7. Hi everyone!! This is my first post, I am scheduled for next Wednesday the 30th of July for my sleeve. I had my Presurgical testing today and am seeing my primary care doc Friday for final clearance. I'm on day 7 of the 2 week liquid diet and I've lost 15 lbs so far! Very exciting to see the scale move down instead of up for once! Anyone else sleeving next week?

I started training pre-op to help with the weight loss and to get into a healthier lifestyle. Post-op, my surgeon cleared me for cardio about two weeks after surgery, then cleared me for strength training after a month. I took it very slow to compensate for the decreased calories and surgical recovery. Best of luck on your journey.

    July 30th sleeve!

I am 9 days out... I am glad I did it... but no one told me of the weight stalls. Just be prepared for anything. Things that changed this past week.... 1. SMELLS are exaggerated and some are deceiving. Have a hanky ready if you are in a public place to breathe through. I sat next to a guy eating beef Jerky on the airplane on the way back from hospital. I thought the jerky smelled like road kill. and the stewardess had some awful perfume... the combo was not pleasant! 2. those first days of drinking... a sip means a teaspoon...not a tablespoon... else OUCH 3. prepare for nap time for at least the first 10 days (cause that is where I am at) 4. make sure you have Gas X strips! I took some on the way home from hospital... boy do they help with the gas pains. 5. try to find a couple clear Protein drinks... I like unjury chicken broth... but it is getting old. and Isopure (rightfully nicknamed isopuke) 6. Have some adult liquid Tylenol for when you get home, OR have a way to crush some pain pills. 7. your gauze when you get home... get the kind that doesn't stick to wounds.... learned that the hard way! 8. stock up with your Clear liquids and have a variety. (fruity G2 and Jello... gets old too. ) and get rest! Good luck with your surgery!

For me it's whenver disovlable stitches are gone so I figure about two weeks I'm planning to give it a go at our family reunion which is 13 days out though might use Water proof band-aids just to be extra safe. I'm also planning to just walk around .. nothing hard core.
  11. tomorrow will be my one week since surgery. my follow up appointment is wednesday. i still have that tight feeling in my chest that i felt after surgery when i would try to drink. i do take prevacid in the morning, and im not having any problems getting fluids/protien down. how long does this take to go away? i thought it had eased up the other day, but sitting here now, i can feel it. and i'm not drinking anything at this exact moment. the feeling reminds me of what it felt like when i would overeat with the lapband. any thoughts?
  12. After reading several ideas...I decided yesterday to increase my intake limits. So I had a cheeseburger kids meal (minus the drink). Burger and fries were not even as good as I had remembered either. But, this morning the scale had moved down 2 lbs!! Not sure if it was the increase in intake or what. But I am thankful for the forward progress!!

    Help

I have seen all sorts of diets, I think it depends on your surgeon and what they feel comfortable with. My surgeon requires a two week pre-op diet even, then clear liquids for 3 days prior to surgery. Post op it's clear liquids for 1 week, full liquids for two weeks, mushy/pureed for a week, then "regular" foods.
  15. Initially, (the first 6 weeks out of surgery) I had emotional/anxiety/depression issues and was terrified of my 40lb weight loss, in such a short time. Now that my emotional issues are being managed, (more or less), through medical/medicine intervention...and food no longer is repulsive to me, I am eating/drinking approximately 600-800 cals a day. I'm weighing myself for the past two weeks and the scale fluctuates between 186-188lbs. I don't get it! I workout on the treadmill at the local Ballys and use some of the exercise equipment but the lbs are just not budging. At this rate, I can't even imagine myself even near goal...my hopes and dreams of a fit and lean body are becoming just that...wishful thinking. I just don't get how taking in less than half of the calories I used to pre-surgery isn't having an impact on my weight. Even some family members are questioning if this surgery was worth it. It's 2 weeks and I'm still weighing 187-188 lbs! This is some hell of a stall! I feel like I did pre surgery every time I tried to go on a diet. And, I may be put on an antidepressant next week so now I'm wondering if that will help or hinder my weight loss mission. Any insights will be appreciated very much. Thanks.

    Drinking...

Jen, I have brought up this subject in a number of threads and posts on here, as it was also a big concern of mine. Here is a link to a thread that I started a few weeks ago. I did ask my Dr. about this numerous times, and I also posted his suggestions. http://www.lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?t=7436&highlight=happy+hour Hope this helps!

Anyone willing to share their food diary?

Bear in mind that my fridge is emptying out because I'm moving this weekend...normally I'd have more store-bought stuff on my menu for the day. This is me halfway into week 7 post-op. Today it's been like so: Breakfast: 1 scrambled egg with onion and a little cheese, some fruit puree from Trader Joe's (a few spoonfulls) Protein drink (1 scoop of GENEPRO with a 16oz cup of Crystal Light mix/water Lunch: 1.5oz of chopped up chicken satay from a restaurant I like (tossed in the peanut sauce) and a couple TBSP of potato salad with egg Dinner: A small side order of String Bean Chicken from Panda Express grabbed on my way to work (I didn't quite finish it) Will probably add a little protein powder to my drink later to make sure I get enough for the day, as well.
  18. I know I heard from other fellow bariatric patients on instagram that surgery will usually bring on your period. I know for me I got my period 2 days after surgery. It was a real dark blood heavy flow with a bit of funk to it and then moved onto something more normal after a few days. I wasn't due for a period for 2 weeks so I knew it was because of the surgery. I also had terrible night sweats and hot flashes the 2nd and 3rd days after surgery. So I think what happened to you is pretty normal. Hang in there it only gets better! I'm 6 days post-op! 19. Hello! I am almost 3 weeks out and wondering about what I should be eating. I am altering between 1/2 cup to 100grams. But if its puree sometimes I do more. Can I get an idea of how much others are able to eat at this point? Or how much you can comfortable eat where you are now? I'm scared to stretch my pouch! Also how many meals are you eating a day? Thanks!

Anyone willing to share their food diary?

I am aslo 6 weeks out. Here's a sample of what I eat daily: Upon waking up: half cup of hot tea Brkfst: Premier Protein shake Snack: 1/2 cupYogurt (greek no sugar added, fat free) Lunch: 2 oz Tuna with lite mayo and 1 sweet pickle Snack: Slice of cheese Dinner: 2 oz soft cooked chicken (I prefer crock pot), with lemon wine sauce Other random things I eat regularly in place of those above: Sashimi Turkey Chili Cottage cheese Peanut Butter (occasional/sparingly) Artichokes soft cooked coffee Salmon if not too dry 1/2 of a Quest bar And lots and lots of fluids!! I drink at least 3 Vitamin Water Zeros daily.
  21. I'm 12 weeks out and only have to take my antacid every few days or so. It depends a lot on what I eat.
  22. I had severe heartburn/acid reflux prior to surgery. When they did my surgery they also repaired my hiatal hernia, which is a regular procedure they do during all their surgery's, since they are right there and simple to repair. Since the surgery (7 weeks) I have had absolutely no heartburn. But if you are having heartburn I would recommend getting to a doctor quickly and get a prescription. Too much acid production can cause alot of problems with the healing process.
  23. I have been on liquids for 3 weeks and even though I tolerate the Protein shakes fine, I am just sick of them. I have made a few Soups over the last week... cream of potato and tomato. I add 2 servings of skim milk instead of Water for extra protein and also some unflavored Protein Powder. I made sure it was not too thick for me to tolerate. I got about 3 servings out of one soup can. I used an immersion blender to puree the few chunks in the cream of potato (or you can just avoid eating them). For milk.. soy milk doesn't taste good to me either. You could possibly try rice milk or almond milk instead. They taste better to me personally. For Fluid I have done several things... Powerade zero, diet lipton green tea with citrus, and water with a few drops of mio liquid Water Enhancer. Hope you start feeling better soon. I only had stomach acid once since I take prilosec every day, but it was not fun!

    Post-Surgical Diet: Torture.

Did the pack include unjury chicken Soup? That goes down well for most if not all during the first few weeks. Warm cafeine free tea is another option. Homemade well seasoned broth as well. Diluted apple juice. I am also lactose intolerant and now add Unjury unflavored to Lactaid skim milk. I add flavoring to it though. Torani syrups, 25% less sugar Nesquick, vanilla extract, banana etc. Many ready to drink Protein shakes are lactose free. I buy them at GNC. Not sure if the Isopure clear juices fall into the category of "sugar free". Check them out at GNC. Are you allowed yogurts? Lactaid now has them. If all fails, ask your doctor if it is ok to drink real Gatorade, real apple sauce and other things so you don't get dehydrated and/or weak. Also it seems like your doctor has not prescribed daily medication to combat acid. (not on an "as needed basis".) I had to try a few until my doctor and I found something that worked. Best wishes!
